Past attempts (hence outdated but some parts would be reusable):

pronunciation

edit

I would like to know how WMF Trustees prefer to be pronounced their names, because, in Japanese texts where roman alphabet is not used, transcription into Katakana script is not based on original spelling, but should reflect the original pronounciation as far as possible.

So, I would like to know,

  1. whether we may pronounce these names as American English; and
  2. whether my pronunciation is correct.

Could you please check your entry on the following table and put self-checked in the checked column?--NJT 11:00, 14 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Name pronunciated as First name Last name checked
Florence Nibart-Devouard French [flɔˡʁɑ̃s] [niˌbaːʁ.dəˡvwaːʁ]
Jimmy Wales American English Jimmy is a common English name. [ˡdʒi.mi] Wales is same as geographical Wales [weilz]
Jan-Bart de Vreede Dutch [jɑn.bɑrt] [deˡfreː.də]
Kat Walsh American English Kat is a common English name. [kæt]

[wɔlʃ]

Frieda Brioschi Italian [ˡfriː.da] [ˡbrjo.ski] self checked
Michael Snow American English Michael is a common English name. [ˡmai.kəl] Snow is same as snow [snou]
Domas Mituzas Lithuanian [doːmɐːs] [mituzɐːs]

Note: I meant common English names as ones to be found in handy dictionaries.

I have no idea how to read the signs mentionned for the prononciation of my name, so I can not really confirm. The one thing I am sure is that I am french, my name is french, so it should read in the french way. Anthere 11:36, 17 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I couldn't yet google successfully to a link that shows the pronunciation of your name.. (or some other french names, for that fact) :(
My IE browser displays boxes for the pronunciation keys. Maybe Aphaia could check the Japanese pronunciation and comment. --Jacob 15:40, 17 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Seems fine to me (ʁ is "parisien R" btw). Eia suggested to put audio files. It could be help for some people. --Aphaia 15:58, 17 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry for asking with not so common notation. Though I have only basic knowledge on French grammer, I think I know how to pronounce your name, except for length (short/long) of vowels.
About Aphaia's idea, I think it's helpful, but I am not trained in phonetics, not so sure about dictation....--NJT 21:57, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Jimmy Wales residence

edit

The Foundation's info page about the Trustees indicates that Jimmy Wales' residence is St. Petersburg, Florida. I thought I read that he had moved (to New York?). - Thekohser 14:06, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Cathedral and the Bazaar

edit

Do we expect the readers of this page to be familiar with the The Cathedral and the Bazaar (as referenced in the entry about Jimbo)? At least there should be a link to it, or perhaps the sentence should be reworded. - Kaare 21:52, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I had no idea what it was in reference to, feel free to edit the source. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 00:52, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Jimmy Wales the founder

edit

Regarding the website: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Board_of_Trustees and the following excerpt: "Jimmy Wales is an Internet entrepreneur and wiki enthusiast, and founder of the Wikipedia project."

I was just curious if changes should be made to that excerpt to provide more correct information. I was wondering if changing the "and founder of" to "and a founder of". I feel that the current wording leads one to believe that Jimmy Wales is the sole founder of the Wikipedia project, but I am curious about the role of Larry Sanger, as stated on the following websites: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Wikipedia
