Living people (BLP)

Check out wikipedia:meta:BLP for a possible template. wikipedia:Foundation:Resolution:Biographies of living people describes what the Foundation requires from projects, in particular: "Ensuring that projects in all languages that describe living people have policies in place calling for special attention to the principles of neutrality and verifiability in those articles". Note, of course, that our project generally does not describe living people, but might in certain very limited and fairly rare circumstances. LtPowers 15:00, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

My intent is to intro with a disclaimer that Traveliciousocityexpialodocious (tm) does not and should not be writing biographies to begin with, so this policy will only be relevant in very rare circumstances. I think those circumstances would involve either promoting or cautioning against seeking out a helpful individual. Our policy would necessarily diverge from WP's in that we could not disallow original research, as this type of advice is almost exclusively relevant to obscure destinations (e.g., search out Tamara on the Gergeti side of Kazbegi. Her khinkali are the best in the region, and her son Giorgi knows all the cool villagers and will take you out with them into the hills to get smashed on chacha). I think just abiding by Wikivoyage:Avoid negative reviews would be sufficient in those cases? I think running that by WMF's legal folks would be the way to go, since the policy is really theirs. --Peter ^Talk 18:02, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Non-free content (NFC)

In addition to BLP, we will need a non-free content policy. WMF requires that any project that wants to make fair use of copyrighted material (in our case, pictures of recent public artwork in some countries like the U.S., and pictures of recent buildings in some countries like France) implement an "Exemption Doctrine Policy" (EDP), the requirements for which can be found here. We could choose to either have a very restrictive non-free content policy, or a liberal one. The various Wikipedia version policies differ pretty widely, which indicates that we have a certain degree of discretion in choosing between the two. The specific needs of our project involve public art and architecture, which tend to be the very focus of travel! I think it is imperative for the quality of our guides that we develop a rationale to keep such images. We could have a very strict BLP-type rule against images containing people, much more so than the Wikipedias, a) since we already do as part of our Privacy policy, and b) because we're not actually writing biographies. --Peter ^Talk 18:09, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, people's faces aren't copyrightable, so I'm not sure what that has to do with a NFC policy. Unless you mean that we don't need to include exceptions for photos of deceased persons who can't be photographed anew, as Wikipedia does. I agree that our NFC policy can be fairly strict -- for example, we can easily require that acceptable copyrighted content be in the form of a photograph of artwork or architecture, and that the non-copyrighted portions of the photo (if any) be licensed freely. Now that :en is up and running, albeit behind a password, can we move the relevant discussions on this page to :en, and then split them out to the appropriate areas?
