This page leaves quite a bit to be desired. The net asset total doesn't carry over from year to year. The use of red for inflows seems non-intuitive and inconsistent. There's no word on when finances will be updated for the 2011/12 fiscal year. Is this really where Wikimedia New York City discloses its finances? If it is not there should be a link, and if it is then we should figure out how to do it better. I'd be very happy to help in whatever way I can. -Thomas Craven (talk) 18:24, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Thomas. Months after your comment this page has been revised.
The reality is that Wikimedia New York City's practices of non-profit management and accounting have not been sufficient to meet the organization's own transparency goals. If you want any part in advising the group what it ought to do then you could be the featured guest and lead presenter at any Wikimedia NYC meeting you attended. I could say that the group has tried various accounting systems which have not worked, and which have been stressful for anyone trying to learn them. Currently the plan is to share a Google spreadsheet in which all expenses are noted, and supplementary to that, all receipts are to be scanned and publicly uploaded. For whatever reasons, things were not done this way in the past. Thanks for your interest - the chapter wishes to establish best practices for itself and if we had a system that worked, then likely other Wikipedia groups even in other countries could use our system as a model. Tax reporting?

edit

Wikimedia NYC is a registered nonprofit. Has its income been such that it has been required to report it to the government? Has it ever filed a tax report, and if so, is that report available online for anyone to see? Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:03, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
