Inovate in free knowledge

edit

I would think also inovation should be an important segment - no? Zblace (talk) 07:53, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps! What would you think is innovative, and how should that be written into the strategy? Ainali talkcontributions 08:28, 15 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I elaborated in last meeting minutes Wikimedians for Sustainable Development/Meeting minutes 20241124 -- Zblace (talk) 10:11, 28 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Our Current Situation

edit

Before detailing our strategy, it may be best to explain the current situation of the group.

status & resources

edit

Right now, the WMSDG group is a group that has been recognised by the AffCom some years ago. It has never had a UG budget since then and has been sporadically active. It has more than 200 people interested, with a potential of (in our estimation) 20-30 active people who would contribute if we had more capacity to accomodate their ideas and efforts.

Our group currently has a lot of documentation on what it wants to do and the values it holds, so not much will have to be done on that front. Right now the documentation and formalities are good enough to take the next step.

aims & communication

edit

What we lack is engaged and committed users, we have seen that there are many efforts aimed at furthering Sustainable Development Goals, but these efforts have little communication with our User Group. Our main focus will be on having better communication and support mechanisms with these groups.

The group has a Telegram group which is half-active. An effort was made to make it more active by dividing into several subgroups, but this didn't produce the results we hoped for, so we will return to one channel (this was decided through a community vote).

Our goals

TBA

Our approach

edit

After getting a good strategy, we will create an annual plan, which will be voted on by the community until the new year, and be used to guide our actions for the future.

@Ainali and all - IMHO in civil society initiatives (especially around such general causes) it is very hard to get off the ground in a directed and strategic way. People are usually temporarily comitted and have limited capacity (free time of hours and days, not really weeks and months) to think strategicaly for several years in advance. For this reason I would not put order in planing but try to develop lite version of both documents in paralel and after a first year or two do a more in depth strategy work. Another Strategy Initiative that might be relevant?

edit

Would this be relevant for our purposes? I think we could do an online meeting about it in which we discussed some data points about these.

  • Documenting and publicising WMF's environmental impact, both in terms of the resources used, and in terms of disseminating information (8)

— The preceding unsigned comment was added by Egezort (talk) 5:46, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

I think this is outside the scope of the user group. We are not here to be auditors or to measure carbon emissions (there is the Sustainability initiative for that). Perhaps we could have something about documenting what information is disseminated, but why limit that to WMF? If we do that, let's do it for all affiliates and be the coordinating role this user group was created for. (And I think that is already essentially what we will help people do under "Manage internal knowledge".) Ainali talkcontributions 16:20, 2 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree that we shouldn't limit it to the WMF, perhaps having a large presentation with WMF being one of the points we talk about could be good. You are right that it is already covered through another strategy. Egezort (talk) 17:51, 3 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Shorter versions

edit

We had talked in the UG meeting that we want shorter and quippier handles for these, so here's what I have:

  • Whenever any affiliate or user wants to have support about sustainable development, they will reach out to the user group.
    • Become a thematic hub for SDG related events
  • Enable the movement to self report metadata related to sustainable development for all activities they do.
    • Enable the movement to self report SDG metadata
  • Make sure there are lists with topics for impact that the communities could use as to-do lists.
    • Increase lists about SDG's
  • Support the creation of diverse media types of content that could illustrate work related to the SDGs in multiple languages.
    • Support SDG illustration methods

Good that you did some thinking on the headers. Some thoughts:
  1. The word "hub" is confusing, considering it is a term for a collection of affiliates. If that is what you mean, then it doesn't really match the longer form of the strategy.
  2. Great!
  3. How about "Make topic for impacts lists"? Then we are aligned with the term used by everyone else.
  4. How about "Innovate in media for SDGs"? I felt that @Zblace wanted to see more innovation than just illustrations.
Ainali talkcontributions 21:45, 27 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Ainali "Hub" seems indeed confusing, a collection of affiliates is not what we aim to become, but perhaps something like a center (not necessarily "the" center) for these sorts of activities is what I mean.
I propose the even shorter: Coordinate SDG related events
Or something similar to this.
Also, I have been thinking about whether it would be possible to become a Thematic organization, although we haven't discussed this specifically. Of course the longer sentence doesn't reflect that, so this would be a separate thing, but it would be in line with the current strategy. Perhaps this got in my mind when finding a summarised sentence ;p
For 3-4, I am happy with your suggestions. Egezort (talk) 10:45, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's a good direction. I suggest "Coordinate SDG related activities" to make it even wider than just what can be defined as events. Ainali talkcontributions 10:56, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Ainali That's good! I'm adding these 4 to the list. Egezort (talk) 12:32, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
