Talk:Wikimedians for Sustainable Development/Strategy 2030
Inovate in free knowledge
editI would think also inovation should be an important segment - no? Zblace (talk) 07:53, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Perhaps! What would you think is innovative, and how should that be written into the strategy? ♥Ainali talkcontributions 08:28, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- I elaborated in last meeting minutes Wikimedians for Sustainable Development/Meeting minutes 20241124 -- Zblace (talk) 10:11, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
Our Current Situation
editBefore detailing our strategy, it may be best to explain the current situation of the group.
status & resources
editRight now, the WMSDG group is a group that has been recognised by the AffCom some years ago. It has never had a UG budget since then and has been sporadically active. It has more than 200 people interested, with a potential of (in our estimation) 20-30 active people who would contribute if we had more capacity to accomodate their ideas and efforts.
Our group currently has a lot of documentation on what it wants to do and the values it holds, so not much will have to be done on that front. Right now the documentation and formalities are good enough to take the next step.
aims & communication
editWhat we lack is engaged and committed users, we have seen that there are many efforts aimed at furthering Sustainable Development Goals, but these efforts have little communication with our User Group. Our main focus will be on having better communication and support mechanisms with these groups.
The group has a Telegram group which is half-active. An effort was made to make it more active by dividing into several subgroups, but this didn't produce the results we hoped for, so we will return to one channel (this was decided through a community vote).
Our goals
editTBA
Our approach
editAfter getting a good strategy, we will create an annual plan, which will be voted on by the community until the new year, and be used to guide our actions for the future.

- @Ainali and all - IMHO in civil society initiatives (especially around such general causes) it is very hard to get off the ground in a directed and strategic way. People are usually temporarily comitted and have limited capacity (free time of hours and days, not really weeks and months) to think strategicaly for several years in advance. For this reason I would not put order in planing but try to develop lite version of both documents in paralel and after a first year or two do a more in depth strategy work. Another Strategy Initiative that might be relevant?
editWould this be relevant for our purposes? I think we could do an online meeting about it in which we discussed some data points about these.
- Documenting and publicising WMF's environmental impact, both in terms of the resources used, and in terms of disseminating information (8)

- I think this is outside the scope of the user group. We are not here to be auditors or to measure carbon emissions (there is the Sustainability initiative for that). Perhaps we could have something about documenting what information is disseminated, but why limit that to WMF? If we do that, let's do it for all affiliates and be the coordinating role this user group was created for. (And I think that is already essentially what we will help people do under "Manage internal knowledge".) ♥Ainali talkcontributions 16:20, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that we shouldn't limit it to the WMF, perhaps having a large presentation with WMF being one of the points we talk about could be good. You are right that it is already covered through another strategy. Egezort (talk) 17:51, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
