Why only humans?

edit

The page says "We are celebrating how humans made Wikipedia what it is, and only humans can help sustain and grow it." I find this an odd choice of phrasing - why "human" rather than "editors" or "community"? Pi bot wants to know why its contributions are less appreciated just because it's silicon-based rather than carbon-based. Wikidata in general can support an increased amount of automation on Wikipedia so that humans can focus more on the edits that only humans can do. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:53, 8 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I heard a rumour that Pi-bot is, in fact, a silicon-puppet for a human editor. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:17, 8 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't know, I'm starting to get the feeling that it makes better edits than I do. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:03, 8 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mike, Thank you for asking this question. I have to say, bots were not on our minds when we started to think about the 20th Birthday, because everything I have experienced here as a "newcomer" has been around meeting people; colleagues and community members alike, each with their very human traits. But, I think I see where you're coming from and so I am going to attempt to answer your question.

I see "bot edits", or "automated edits", as the product of human minds at work who are trying to make Wikipedia and our projects a better place, a better source of knowledge, a more accurate one. I think (underline "think") I understand what you mean by not wanting to push forward only the human edits, which might introduce more mistakes than a bot, but I think you might agree with me that having humans behind the bots and the AIs help us keep the most important thing about being human: innovation and creativity.

So, I want to thank you for voicing your question, because it will help us make sure that as we celebrate 20 years of Wikipedia, we keep in mind how technology, albeit created by humans, is assisting the human mind and heart to create this wonder that Wikipedia and its sister projects are, with the goal of gathering the sum of all human knowledge. I'm available to chat more on this, if you wish! Thank you. Khanyi (talk) 16:09, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@KMpumlwana (WMF): Thanks for the reply and for listening! Bots are in the background, so they often aren't immediately obvious. I agree that bots are the work of human minds, although they are as likely to make mistakes as humans (they operate on pre-existing information, and if there is bad input information, they will make bad edits as a result). However, they are really important to save the time of human editors so that they don't have to do the mundane tasks that can be automated.
If you continue with the "human" narrative (I'd still recommend using another word), then I think it is still important to emphasise that humans can do some tasks really well (particularly writing article prose, taking photos, etc.), but other tasks (like lists and metadata) can be done better by automated tools. I really don't want to see the situation where WMF is saying "only humans should make edits", as that would take us back a decade or two (even in Wikipedia's earliest days, bot edits were important). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:41, 12 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mike Peel: Hi Mike,

Thank you for engaging me, and giving more insight into this. A lot of what we’re aiming for during these celebrations is to tell the stories about things that aren’t quite as obvious to people outside of our movement. I think you’ve pointed to a great storytelling opportunity, because it’s something people who are external or just entering this movement and learning about how it all works — would love to know more about. I certainly wouldn’t encourage anything that takes us 20 years back, but rather what pushes us forward into the next 20 years — and the bots made by humans that make the human work easier are part of what pushes us forward. Thanks Khanyi (talk) 07:54, 14 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • I really agree that the story of bot editing on Wikipedia is one that is *very* interesting. The early anti-vandal bots started to be used on English Wikipedia at about the same time as we had the drop in number of editors, and there is some indication that there is a correlation between these events. Some Wikipedias generate a large percentage of their articles using bots. Bots also do a huge amount of routine maintenance on a lot of projects. Scripts also have a place in the discussion as they are human-guided mini-programs generally used to automate tedious routine tasks. They both play a big role in how we manage projects with such a comparatively small number of active editors. Risker (talk) 01:34, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
I love how Wikipedia follows world trends and the first issue here was about why the inclusion of humans only. What about the others? They donÂŽt get to taste the cake? So unfair! FkpCascais (talk) 23:48, 17 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
agree with Mike. Golmore (talk) 06:48, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • To continue a train of thought here; it seems we can all agree bots and scripts- much like information and tools- are extensions of the influence of human minds. While that can be interpreted as seeing all of Wikimedia as the result of Humans, that would necessarily be leaving out part of the picture.
After a human submits work, the ways others (including bots and scripts) interpret, interact with, and build on the work over time can be unpredictable. So, after degrees of separation from what was submitted, works can become more a result of the work of editors (human, bot, or other) than the original author.
Though the function of creation across time is much different now, a correlation can be drawn between the claims that 1. human work is not the result of their non-human ancestors, and the claim that 2. bot work is not the result of their human creators. The strength of that correlation is dependent upon innumerable factors however, not the least of which are the functions of time and the "generational distance" from the respective origins.
Have I run down a rabbit hole a bit? I mean to say that WMF being a Human enterprise is as true as WMF being a combined Human and Other enterprise, as the Others we are aware of are an extension of the Humans, but are moving progressively into the realm of being something separate. Just like the world, WMF is evolving more quickly than we may know. Valigar (talk) 14:25, 15 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Valigar. Indeed, we all agree on the different elements that made this movement what it is today. Thanks for sharing your ideas. --Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 12:22, 19 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wording

edit

Hello, I just don't get the meaning of this sentence:

"We are celebrating 20 years human!"

Is a comma lacking, or a suffix, or something else? :-) Ziko (talk) 15:43, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Or "20 years humanity", I don't understand either. Stryn (talk) 08:36, 6 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Ziko: : @Stryn: Hello and thank you for your questions!
For the English iteration of this line, we are using an English language turn of phrase sometimes used in book/movie titles where the verbal structure is implied; as in the film 12 Years a Slave, where the implied structure is "He was a slave for 12 years". The popular song "Three Times a Lady" uses this construct, too.
The construction can be used with durations followed by a noun, and it indicates how long or how many times someone is or was something. With “20 Years Human”, we imply that for 20 years, Wikipedia has been built and brought to life by human beings. When it comes to the translation of this topic, this is something I've thought long and hard about — as someone who speaks English as a third language.
The great thing about the concept “20 Years Human” is that the term “human” exists in every language, and that variations of the concept of humanity can be applied in any culture.  For instance, there is a concept called "ubuntu"/ "isintu" which refers to human beings sharing in resources, and that one human being exists because of others (which feels quite applicable to why Wikipedia exists, and the work our volunteers do for everyone to share in the sum of all human knowledge).
When translating, the aim is to capture the sentiment, rather than directly translating the copy. This can be achieved by identifying the meaning of what is being said and why it is being said; in order to convey the same meaning and purpose in the destination language.
For example:
English: I use blue (e.g. a blue colour pencil/paint), translated to isiZulu as: Ngipenda ngombala oluhlaza okwesibhakabhaka.
In the example above, the isiZulu translation of "I use blue" writes out the action and describes the colour with an example. Loosely, it says "I paint with the colour of the sky"
In French "Twenty years human" could be "Vingt ans d’humain". For other languages, we might have to apply as in the above isiZulu example. Possible options include:
  • Twenty Years of Human Knowledge‹
  • Celebrating the Humans behind Wikipedia‹
  • Celebrating the humans who make Wikipedia work
We would encourage anyone to make this line relevant to their own language or cultural context! I hope this helps. Thank you for your time! Khanyi (talk) 18:48, 11 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Adding pings for Ziko and Stryn to make sure they've received them. :-) Ed WMF [talk] 20:57, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dear KMpumlwana (WMF), thank you for the explanation. So my problem was less a grammatical but a semantic one, it seems. When I saw the trailer of "12 years a Slave" in the cinema, I suppose I immediately understood that the phrase refers to the protaganist of the movie. But... "human"? Sure, I could translate that to German. "Wir feiern 20 Jahre Mensch!" Like in, "we celebrate x years of democracy" at the anniversary of our constitution.

I am not sure how many people, with English as their first, second, third language, will have similar problems to get the message at once. So, how long will be the label attached to the slogan? Wouldn't it be a better idea to have a slogan that is easy to understand for most people, and easy to translate? Something like "20 years of human knowledge" would be a good start for a discussion, I guess. Ziko (talk) 22:31, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dear Ziko, I now understand fully what you're saying, and thank you for engaging me on it! It's an interesting challenge, because to us, the "human" in 20 Years Human refers to every human that makes it possible: the ones who edit, the ones who create, the ones who exist so that we have things to create about, the ones who are curious enough to find out more, the ones who contribute to keeping this shared knowledge free. It's essentially one of the better demonstrations of human collaboration. That said, we have decided to open discussions about this particular phrasing, so we can figure out creative expressions around it together. Thank you again! Khanyi (talk) 17:01, 17 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Please consider to drop this 'human'(s) centered wording in intro text all-together in as it will be first thing people read and non-native speakers are confused by it already. It is hardy possible to grasp intention now, let alone to translate into different languages. Restart the copywriting. Work should be done also with non-native English people that can immediately think with other languages in mind! Zblace (talk) 11:09, 6 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Respectful greetings, O, carbon-based forms of life. Thank you @Ziko for asking this! As someone else who tried to translate this (in my case, into French), I second others in that these sentences with the term human are very hard to understand properly, hence translate. So thanks @KMpumlwana (WMF) for your explanations (do I assume correctly that you are the original author of this?).
If I read you correctly, the last sentence We are celebrating 20 years human! means that we are celebrating 20 years of a great human work that has been done all for Mankind; but that said, we should translate it to our fantasy, as long as it sounds idiomatic and contains the duration of 20 years along with some word derived from Latin humanus. That’s fine, I’ll figure it out. :-)
The previous sentence remains problematic to me: We are celebrating how humans made Wikipedia what it is, and only humans can help sustain and grow it. Here, what does humans intend to mean? Are we celebrating how some human beings made Wikipedia, or how the human beings (all of them, i.e. Mankind as a whole) made it? (The question also applies to the second occurrence of humans.) Now that I think, the how also bears some ambiguity to my non-native reading: are we celebrating the process by which human beings achieved to make Wikipedia, or the fact that the ones who made Wikipedia are human beings? Lastly, I cannot grasp the logical connection between the left-hand and write-hand of the comma. The left part evokes the work achieved so far (past tense) while the second part states a generality, or something about the future (present tense). If the second part is about the work achieved so part, shouldn’t it be written with the past tense too? If it is about the future (from now, what we need in order to keep expanding the project (i.e. it is a call for more people to get involved)), shouldn’t it be inserted elsewhere (certainly not in the same sentence as the first part, and not between the first part and the sentence about 20 years human since both refer to the time elapsed so far)? Also, it looks like a truism to me. Could you clarify this? Thanks again, — MaĂ«lan (talk) 18:03, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
So, I stil don't quite get the meaning of "20 years human". It seems to say that, before Wikipedia, I have not been human. But something else. An interesting title for a science fiction movie, though. Ziko (talk) 16:33, 27 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm think I do understand it, though I kind of wish I didn't. Arbitrarily sticking the word "human" (or occasionally derived terms) is a kind of slogan-like thing practised by a certain cultural group, which has the primary effect of either making people outside the group feel vaguely alienated (if they recognize it) or confused (if they don't). Probably inadvertent/unintentional, but still unfortunate. The statements don't need to have any actual meaning. I suspect that, to the original author(s), the phrase "20 years human" sounds like a meaningful statement evocative of vaguely optimistic/positive things and in-group solidarity, while the phrase "20 years people" would just sound weird. --Yair rand (talk) 22:56, 14 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

"Stormtroopers of the Opressive Regime, 20 years uber-human"? "Industrial Revolution and Capitalism, destroying the environment, 200 years human!" Not all human endeavors are noble. I understand the desire to highlight the crowdsourced nature of Wikipedia, but ... what products are not made by people (or by machines designed by people)? And in English, the idiomatic phrase would be "how people made Wikipedia" not "how humans made Wikipedia". The expression "by the people, for the people" would be more accurate, but that's been used already. Pelagic (talk) 10:08, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Initiative for celebrating Wikipedia 20

Perhaps we can celebrate Wikipedia 20 virtually by suggesting the World's leaders endorse 6-hour day. If there are more than 2021 Wikipedians sign the petition, then it becomes a valid plan.

In the end, human knowledge is there meant to improve human well-being. :)

Please no politics here. Stryn (talk) 08:36, 6 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your suggestion. I just checked the definition of Wikipedia:politics and realized that Politics (from Greek: ΠολÎčτÎčÎșÎŹ, politikĂĄ, 'affairs of the cities') is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations between individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status. Hence, I would say that everyone involving in the activities that are associated with making decisions in Wikimedia Meta is doing politics. Regards. Legal doctrine (talk) 08:41, 6 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Meta-Wiki partially serves as a hub for Wikimedia movement internal politics, but what you're proposing is not that. I fail to see the connection between Wikipedia 20 and this particular labour law. It seems like a stretch to say they're related, and not all Wikipedians would agree with the proposal anyway. PiRSquared17 (talk) 08:49, 6 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

By the way, it is conceivable to me that Wikipedia can be a bridge between human knowledge and human's real-life direction, as postulated by WP:Purpose. So at least, I think it is relevant. Regards. Legal doctrine (talk) 08:59, 6 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Rapid Grant survey

edit

As part of the upcoming celebrations surrounding Wikipedia's 20th birthday, the Wikimedia Foundation is publishing a short optional survey that will help us understand the needs of people who would like to host a birthday event. The survey is expected to take three to five minutes to fill in and will remain open until 23:59 UTC on Wednesday, 30 September 2020.

Before taking the survey, please review the privacy statement policy.

We would also like to announce that the Foundation will be supporting Wikipedia 20 anniversary celebration events through multiple grant programs:

  • Rapid Grants to support celebration events up to 2000 USD. More information on them will be available next month.
  • Additional funding for Conference & Events grantees (e.g. for a regional or thematic conference) who wish to incorporate a celebration event to an existing conference.
  • Conference & Event Grants to support celebration events for more than 2000 USD.*
  • Round one applications for conference & event grants is now open until 28 September 2020.

Thank you! --Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 16:43, 22 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Rapid Grants for Wikipedia 20 celebration events

edit

We are excited to announce that the Wikimedia Foundation will be supporting individuals and groups planning to hold Wikipedia 20 celebration events through the Rapid Grants program.

The Rapid Grants program can support event plans with a budget ranging from 500 USD, up to 2,000 USD. All the details, the eligibility criteria, and the application form are available on the Wikipedia 20 grants page.

Applications for Rapid grants are accepted between the 1st and 15th of each month, and a decision on the application is, typically, ready by the end of that month. For applicants who would like to host Wikipedia celebration events during the month of January 2021, we highly recommend applying as soon as possible (i.e. during the November 2020 cycle). For later events through the end of 2021, applications will continue to be open later in the year.

Other funding opportunities If your plans for the Wikipedia 20 celebration event don’t meet some of the eligibility criteria for a Rapid Grant (e.g. your budget is expected to exceed $2000), you may want to consider reducing the scale of your activities, or to explore other grant opportunities that may better support your plan:

*Round one applications for Conference & Event grants is now closed. Details for round two (for events that will be held between July and December 2021) will be announced on the conference and event grants page.

For more information on Wikipedia 20, please visit the Wikipedia 20 grants meta page. Thank you and please share the message with your communities!--Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 21:05, 15 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia 20 office hour

Hi everyone. In the Wikipedia 20 survey last month, we asked about types of non-financial support the Wikipedia 20 team can provide to aid event organizers during their planning for celebratory events. In the responses, we have seen a set of support areas the organizers are looking for, including: guidance on holding online events, help with content the event organizers can share with their social media communities on the occasion of Wikipedia 20, creating video messages to be shared with local communities, ideas for swag, etc. The Wikipedia 20 team is planning to hold an office hour in the month of November to explore ways to support these requests and answer any questions that event organizers may have. We wanted to ask if you have other topics that you would like to add to this meeting agenda and what other areas of support your group may need to make your event most successful? How it is going to work: There will be three, one-hour long sessions to brainstorm and make symbols. If you can only brainstorm and not design, please join one of them anyway. The more, the merrier.

If you are interested in joining a session to help us create more illustrations based on the style on these Wikipedia 20 marks, please sign up on this page or email wikipedia20 wikimedia org telling us how you would like to be involved and on which of the following dates and times:

Hi everyone! In honor of the birthday, we will be hosting a virtual birthday party for our communities on January 15th from 4-5 pm UTC! Please join us on a Youtube livestream where we will celebrate all of the volunteers and community members who have built this movement over the last 20 years.

Our celebration will include remarks from community members about how they have seen the movement grow over the 20 years and their wishes for the future, as well as from Jimmy Wales and Katherine Maher.

We’d also love to hear from all of you! This celebration is a chance for us to come together and to recognize the people behind our projects that make this all possible. We’ll be highlighting community milestones and achievements over the past year. Tell us what you’ve been working on, and big moments you’d like to call out from the past year! You can share details on the Meta page for the 20th virtual birthday party and we’ll include those during the virtual event. We’ll also be sharing more details soon about others ways to participate.

This virtual birthday party is just one of many activities that are being planned around the movement for the 20th birthday. You can check out the Wikipedia 20 birthday hub to learn more about local and regional events and add your planned event, birthday images, media activities and other resources for community celebrations. If you have any questions, you can also reach the Wikimedia Foundation’s 20th birthday committee at wikipedia20 wikimedia org.

We are looking forward to celebrating with you! --Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 12:00, 11 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Can someone please explain what this picture refers to? -- Ата (talk) 15:43, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @User:Ата! Per the file description, "bapho" (Portuguese - Brazil) symbol for Wikipedia 20. Means "great/amazing" and is associated with usage by the LGBTQ+ communities. --Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 14:27, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Request for new pictures

edit

In Italian Wikipedia we are organizing the event as a "virtual birthday party" (see: w:it:Wikipedia:Wikipedia20). A this regard, they could be useful some pictures related to birthday events, with the same style of the other Wikipedia 20 pictures, as:

  • gift boxes
  • birthdays decorations (e.g.: balloons and writing "Happy Birthday Wikipedia")
  • piece of cake
  • gif of a cake while the candles go out
  • gif of confetti with transparent background, to add on the page for decoration :)

Please let me know in case you will create one or more of these pictures. Thanks. --Daniele Pugliesi (talk) 18:57, 21 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Daniele Pugliesi! I don't know if there is still opportunity for our illustrators to create more symbols. While I'm checking on that, feel free to follow these instructions to create your favorite ones. Thank you! --Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 11:43, 15 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

One week until #Wikipedia20! New updates + resources

edit

Hi everyone,

We are officially one week away from Wikipedia’s 20th birthday! 🎉Please see below for the latest updates about the celebration and ways to support and participate:

Virtual birthday party

For Wikipedia's 20th birthday party [1] on 15 January, we'd love to hear from you, highlight your work, and have your help to spread the word. Here is how to get involved:

  • Record a video saying “Happy Birthday” or birthday wishes for Wikipedia in your language for our birthday video montage. You can record and submit a short clip (under 30 seconds) via your phone or computer by going to the Tribute webpage. The deadline to submit a video is 12 January.*
  • If you have a Wikimedia-related fun fact or accomplishment from the movement that you would like us to highlight in the celebration, please add it to the talk page (here) on Meta, and we’ll highlight these during the celebration.
  • Invite your followers to the event on social media. Here’s a sample post to adapt for your channels: Happy early 20th birthday to @Wikipedia, the world's largest free online encyclopedia! Join us at their virtual party on Friday, 15 January to celebrate Wikipedia and the people who make it possible. Details: link #Wikipedia20

Happy birthday videos to use at your event!

Check out the Meta page for multiple resources that you can use for your local birthday celebrations, including a birthday video message from Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Katherine Maher and video clips of happy birthday in multiple languages.

Social media: #Wikipedia20

Visit the updated social media section on Meta for posts to share on your channels before and on 15 January. These are the main things to know:

  • Please use #Wikipedia20 and tag @Wikipedia in all posts so we can help share them
  • Before 15 January, we would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word about the virtual event [1]
  • On 15 January, the Wikimedia Foundation will officially begin celebrating Wikipedia Day at 7:00 am UTC. You can see our content plans on Meta. Please retweet and share our posts.
  • On 15 January, please send Wikipedia a happy birthday message and encourage your followers to do the same. Link to the commemorative website (20.wikipedia.org) and include celebratory graphics.
  • If you would like additional amplification from the Wikimedia and/or Wikipedia social media accounts of materials you are sharing, please complete this form with the relevant details.

FYI — paid video promotions

The Foundation will also be promoting videos that celebrate the birthday through paid digital media on a variety of non-Wikimedia websites. These will start on 15 January and continue for about four weeks. The plan is to reach existing Wikipedia readers in Nigeria and the United States with the following two goals:

  • To inform them about the Wikimedia movement, broadly defined
  • To increase awareness of the humans that power the Wikimedia sites

As a reminder, you can stay up-to-date by watching the Wikipedia 20 discussion page (here)[, and joining the Facebook group and Telegram group.

If you have questions, please email wikipedia20@wikimedia.org or use this discussion page.

We are so excited to celebrate with you next week!

Note: Tribute is a third party service based in the United States, with its own terms of service and privacy policy. Please review their terms and privacy policy before submitting your video. In order to submit your video, you may need to provide Tribute with a name and email address. If you are not comfortable submitting your real name or email, we recommend using a username or pseudonym instead. By submitting a video, you are giving the Foundation consent to include your segment in the birthday montage, which will be shared during the virtual party, linked on the birthday meta page, and shared via our social channels.

The celebration continues and Rapid Grants are still available to support your events!

edit

Hi everyone!

This January we started our celebration of Wikipedia’s 20th birthday. Many people joined us for a global virtual event and thousands others joined many other events in every part of the world.

The celebration continues!

Many other events are still being planned throughout 2021. You can check out the events and follow their updates on meta or plan an event in your community if there isn’t one. If you are considering holding an event, we wanted to let you know that Rapid Grants are still available to support your planned events. For events happening in March, please make sure to submit your grant application by 15 February and for events happening until the end of July 2021, please make sure to submit your application no later than 15 June 2021.

Applications for Rapid Grants are open from the 1st to the 15th of each month and decisions are typically made by the end of that month. Rapid Grants can fund common events in the movement such as edit-a-thons and workshops in addition to small-scale experiments that don't need extensive review to get started with a budget ranging between 500 to 2,000 USD.

You can find more information on Rapid Grants for Wikipedia 20 and the application form on Meta.

Please let us know if you have any questions. --Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 13:28, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Share special moments from your Wikipedia 20 celebration!

edit

Hi everyone,

We have started a Wikipedia 20 Scrapbook on meta wiki. This is a space where we all can document the celebration events we held or are planning to hold to celebrate Wikipedia 20.

You can add any photos you have of your event, share a moment, a link to the event page, screenshots of your virtual event, a photo of your cake or anything else you want to post in the scrapbook to document your celebration.

There is a link in the header with instructions on how to add a new section for your event. You can also find sample image galleries on the page.

We look forward to seeing all the wonderful images and memories from the celebrations around the world!

We also wanted to remind you that Rapid Grants are available to support your Wikipedia 20 planned events. For events taking place in May, please submit your grant application by 15 April, and for events taking place through the end of July 2021, please submit your application no later than 15 June 2021. You can find more information on Rapid Grants for Wikipedia 20 and the application form on meta.

Please let us know if you have any questions. --LTraer (WMF) (talk) 19:52, 25 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
