Participation of non-Wikipedia projects

@T Cells: The project explicitly mentions Wikipedias as a target projects. I would like to organize WPWP in Esperanto not only in Wikipedia but also in Wikivoyage and Wikiquote. @KuboF Hromoslav: You are right that the current scope of the campaign focuses on Wikipedia only and I agree with you that there are several Wikimedia projects such as Wikiquote, Wikiversity, WikiVoyage where media files are needed as well. This is something I think we should definitely consider. However, we have two weeks to the start of the campaign and we may need enough time to review and evaluate the most effective strategy to track metrics and implement the campaign there altogether. This I am unsure we could achieve this year. However, if you have a better way to implement the campaign in Esperanto Wikiquotes and WikiVoyage, I'd encourage you to do so and we could learn from the results and use the learning to improve the campaign in those projects next year. 3D objects?

Yes, 3D objects are eligible. They will not be eligible at this time due to the challenges of tracking articles where 3D objects have been added. But if you have a way to track the metrics in your community, you could consider designing a special prizes for it locally. Please let us know if there are ways we could provide support. Regards. Tool for calculating participation

I haven't find recomended tool for calculating participation. The only I know is the Wikimedia hashtag search, but...

When calculating results of WPWP 2020 Esperanto in works fine with basic settings. But as soon as I have set it to show "Edit adds image", it shows nothing despite these edit indeed have adding an image.

@KuboF Hromoslav they didn't index previous edits -- the filters only apply to edits since the change was turned on (which was a few months ago). You should be able to see any recently added images with a hashtag. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 14:21, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Hashtag and Winners

I want to know the details of the following few things ..

1. Who can participate in the Arabic community? Only Arabs?

2. Will wikipedians of any language be able to participate in the #wla category and will be considered for the award?

3. If someone uses all three tags of #wpwp, #wpwpbn, #wla, will he/she be considered in the above three categories at the same time?

4. If someone only uses the #wpwpbn tag, will he/she be considered for local rewards only? Does he have to use the #wpwpbn as well as the #wpwp tag to be considered in both international and local categories? Aishik Rehman 04:45, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

2. Yes, Wikipedians of any language can participate in the #WLA category but the contributions should be made to WLA targeted languages, outlined here. Aishik Rehman, we do not have local coordinators in Assamese Wikipedia. Thus, the contributions there would be tracked with the #WPWP but we could filter contributions made to Assamese Wikipedia and get an Assamese speaker to help with review. If you speak this language, you could help coordinate activities there and you will still be eligible for the international prizes since there is no local prizes for Assamese. When it comes to the WLA, wikipedians of any language are welcome to participate, and if they are participating to different wikipedians, it is fine as well. The only thing is that participation to French and English will not be counted for first prize. So let's say a participant provide 100 entries in English, 10 entries in French, 80 entries in Arabic and 11 entries in Spanish, then for the first prize, I will count only Arabic and Spanish (hence 91 entries). This is to push the reuse of the images beyond those two languages. However, contributions to English and French will count for the following prizes. Auto inclusion from wikidata - does that count?

setting image (P18) can sometimes make the photo appear in multiple wikis (because of infoboxes that take values from wd). does that count as one entry or as many as the number of wikis using the photo? -- RZuo (talk) 07:38, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Copyvios

How do you deal with copyvio's uploaded to get points and then deleted? If someone adds a photo to WP with the tag in the edit summary and the photo is later deleted, the uploader could still get credit for uploading a copyvio Gbawden (talk) 10:54, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your question, Gbawden. The risk of users uploading copyvio is low as the campaign does not includes uploading of new photos but the use of existing freely licensed images already on Commons. However, if an image is later removed for legitimate reasons, that contributions will not count. i.e credit won't be awarded for that particular contributions. If we discovered that a particular user is being disruptive as we are also closely monitoring contributions through the hashtag, they would be disqualified after warning and this would be communicated to them. For example, we have found several contributions by User:Major Lyte to be disruptive. We have communicated to them through the coordinator of the campaign in their community offline but we will leave an official warning for them soon. Any further disruption will result in them being disqualified. If they continue the disruption, they would be reported for necessary admin action. T Cells^Talk 11:17, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Reduce low quality contributions

Hello!

Do you have any ideas to reduce low quality contributions? Last year we had people editing our midsize Wikipedia without knowing the language and leaving image captions untranslated. This left us wit the choice of either reverting the edits or following up with the additional work of translation. This left a negative impression in the community about the event. @Papuass: thanks for your questions. This year, we have improved the participating instructions. We have clearly communicated to participants via local affiliates/organisers to not add images to articles in a language they do not speak. See #4 of the campaign rules as well. We designed this best practices to support local organisers and we mandated all local organisers to organise training or series of training for participants from their communities (especially new users). This has been communicated to local organisers at least a month before this campaign. One thing, we did not do last year is that we did not provide adequate information on how the hashtag should be used. This year, we have also designed a guide on how to use WPWP Campaign Hashtags. We have also mandated all local organisers to monitor participation from their various community via the hashtag. We believe that these will minimise disruption from new users. If there is any participant who fails to read or follow the participating instructions, any admin could block the user after warning. You entice idiots not knowing the first word of a language spamming us with unqualified waste, for us to mop up. Uploading photos to use in articles

Is this permitted within the contest rules? I know the focus is on content already on the Commons but can we upload new photos to the Commons as well, and be permitted to use those photos in the contest? Also, I noticed under the "Campaign rules" section "The image must be published under a free use license or as public domain. The possible licenses are CC-BY-SA 4.0, CC-BY 4.0, CC0 1.0." Does this mean if I upload a photo under a different license (ie the popular CC-BY-SA 2.0) (or find one under a different license and upload that image to an article) that that image won't count? Uploading photos is not within the scope of the #WPWPCampaign but if you have a lists of articles with missing photos and you have relevant photos for use on the articles, you could upload them to Commons under any version of the Commons-compatible licenses. Licensing?

Why are CC-BY-SA 4.0, CC-BY 4.0, and CC0 1.0 the only acceptable licenses for the challenge according to the "Campaign rules" section? commons:Commons:Creative Commons copyright tags lists a lot more versions of CC-BY and CC-BY-SA that are valid for Wikimedia projects. What's wrong with those ones?

While there are several Creative Commons licenses, I only listed the licenses that are compatible with Wikimedia Commons. Your question should have been about why I listed a few versions. All versions of CC-BY and CC-BY-SA are allowed. These were corrected in the campaign rules linked above but I forgot to fix it after my response. BTW, your link above C:Category:Free licenses only directed users to a few free licensed-images. You probably should have linked to Commons:Choosing a license or c:COM:L. Best regards. Cryptic edit summaries

Please see w:en:User talk:OTim75#Edit summaries, it took several posts to find out about this page. Advising people to "Include the hashtag #WPWP in the edit summary of all articles improved with images." creates a cryptic edit summary that explains nothing. It gives the impression that people are following some form of meme. People are being warned - and even reverted - for disruptive editing. • Hello @Redrose64:, we genuinely apologize for this extremely slow response. We didn't realize that you left a comment at Talk: Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos. Many of the organizing team aren't watching that page as it was only used for the 2020 edition of the campaign.

Let me give you some background information on why we decided to use the hashtag tool. During the design of this project, we had a challenge with identifying the right tool for tracking contributions. We wanted a tool that could track the contributions of each participant, the total number of participants, the articles they edited, and the Wikipedia language in which the edits were made. Such tool would enable us to monitor the progress of the campaign and identify individual participants that are being disruptive as well. We thought of the Wikimedia program and outreach dashboard but it has its own limitations. The outreach dashboard will require all participants to register on the dashboard. It tracks all contributions including those that aren't related to the campaign. So, there was practically no existing tool aside from the hashtag that could track the metrics we wanted accurately. This is why we are using the hashtag to track metrics. The campaign rule requires that participants include the #WPWP in the edit summary of all articles improved with images in addition to a descriptive edit summary. See the campaign rule. Rule #4 also states that users who repeatedly add images without captions and irrelevant images to articles will be disqualified. At least one user has been disqualified for such behavior. @Gyrofrog:, we didn't ignore your recommendation. We only felt that the banner that User:The Grid mentioned would be sufficient but it seems we were wrong. We have gone ahead to include an instruction that a link to the project page be provided as correctly suggested by you and Redrose64. We understand that some users may be hyperactive and making too many mistakes as a result. You may block such editors per your community blocking policy and they would automatically be disqualified from the campaign as well. We apologize for the confusion. @T Cells: It's now three weeks since I raised the issue, and nobody seems to be using meaningful edit summaries yet, not even a link to the competition page. Every day I see images being added to articles on English Wikipedia which just seem to be chosen at random and simply dumped at the top of the page. We have style guidelines that we expect people to follow, which are being ignored. This was a particularly bad example - and the following edit made precisely the same mistake. Where are these people getting their ideas from? I've had to serve warnings on some of them, such as en:User talk:Omolarabasirat#July 2021, yet they continue unabated. It's clear that some of them aren't even checking the page to see if the image they are adding is already there; see these edits.

Their editing rates suggest that they care more for quantity than for quality. When counting them, is somebody from this competition going to validate edits by the likes of Champion seleman, Collysoka, Germain92, Morgan Lema, Omolarabasirat, OTim75, Unofficiallummy and many others? I wanted to echo the concerns raised here. The intent of this project is great but the lack of meaningful edit summaries are just awful. I edit the English WP relatively frequently (usually a couple hundred edits per month) and had no idea that this was going on and unnecessarily dragged two users to an administrative noticeboard over their high rates of edits and non-meaningful edit summaries. To me, multiple accounts adding literally hundreds of images to articles over the course of just a couple of hours with the same edit summary screamed to me "unapproved bot! sockpuppetry!" Hi, I have tweaked the wording for the edit summary a bit more: people need to give a decent edit summary ànd use #WPWP. Hope this helps...

In the mean time, just FYI, I also filed a Phabricator request today because diets for the banners in general seem to be behaving poorly at the moment. I myself at least am seeing the banner several times a day but the diet has been set for showing 3 days in three days - maybe I (CN admin for this campaign) did something wrong, or maybe there is a bug. "Addition of many Images"

Hi, all. I totally and absolutely agree with the ends and intents of this project. And I have been trying to add as many images as possible within reason (for instance, I added the top photo here Blitzchung controversy, and dozens of other places, but probably of less notability). But I've been told in one particular instance that I'm adding too many images, people have deleted my edits without even responding to talk pages, etc.. I know that nobody can tell me the answer to "How much is too much?", because it is a matter of editorial consensus. But can someone tell me if 4 small icon images in 10kb article is the absolute max that should be allowed? All photos of activists I have added to this page have been completely removed. I honestly wouldn't bring this up normally, except for seeing the banner for this campaign every minute! Just include the hashtag #WPWP and https://w.wiki/39jm in the Edit summary of all articles improved with images in addition to a descriptive edit summary. for example "I added the image of an elephant this article" #WPWP. Error You are right that the link wasn't there at the start of the campaign. We recently updated it to include a link that will direct people to the project page. We will however not disqualify participants who hasn't been adding that link as part of edit summary. About some issues

I need to be a little more confident about three things,

1. Is fair usable image acceptable for competition?
2. Will it be accepted to add an image to an article that has an image?
3. There is no image in one article, an editor added two images with hashtags through two edits. What will be his score now?

1. Some local Wikipedia (e.g English Wikipedia) allows fair-use images. They are only allowed for use on local Wikipedia languages where they are allowed and they would still qualify for prizes.
2. Adding an image to an article that has an image should only happen in rare cases. For example, if the biography of a singer has an image of him performing in a stage under the "career section", and you have another image showing him as a high school student, it could be added the section on his "education".
3. It's one score. It is the number of pages improved with photos we count and not the number of phoyis added. T Cells^Talk 16:10, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

Are there different rules for those who only read the main page and for those who ask questions? Is edit via script allowed?

Just look at this or this. No offence to the user, but see this. There is no way you can edit 4K in 9 days, unless they are using some kind of automated process (e.g. using script find: | слика = replace with | слика = {{subst:#Property:P18}}).

1. Is edit via (auto-semiauto) script allowed?
2. Campaign rules clearly says "All image additions must include a caption that describes what the image is of". So, all of these 4K edits without "caption/description" are going to be counted as valid? Eligible?

1. Edits via script that complies with the campaign rules are allowed. If a user uses a script to add images to articles in a manner that comply with the campaign rules and the local community editing policy, we don't have a problem with such edits.
2. The primary purpose of an infobox image is to illustrate the topic of the article. Depending on the nature of the subject and the image used, the ideal caption can range from none at all to a regular full-sentence caption. Generally, infoboxes display the page name as the title of the infobox. If nothing more than the page name needs to be said about the image, the caption may be omitted as being redundant with the title of the infobox. Hello. Could somebody stop users from adding videos everywhere? Good photos with correct captions are all right, but, please, stop doing the mess with random quality and use video popping everywhere. Hello Hugo.arg and thanks for bringing this to our attention. Is there a local policy that prohibit addition of videos to articles ltwiki? I am asking to better understand the problem. If a user is adding poor quality videos to articles or adding irrelevant videos without proper captions, such user should be warned and asked to refrain from doing that and if the behaviour continue after warning, they may be blocked for disruption per your community blocking policy and such user may be disqualified from participating in the campaign altogether. I reviewed the linked discussion in ltwiki and it looks like this is a problem with User:Tarih. Have you or anyone else in ltwiki raised this issue with Tarih? We will recommend that you leave a note for Tarih and warn them accordingly. The campaign rules states that Do not add photos to articles in a language you do not speak fluently. Users who repeatedly add images without captions, irrelevant images, etc. may be disqualified. Yes, it mostly concerns User:Tarih but some Indian users also contribute similarly. Also, they work in such way not only in Lithuanian wikipedia but everywhere: let's say this contribution: additional media to very tiny article makes it as a photo galery, uninformative caption, media file which loads very slowly, there is nothing additional to the picture in it. Thanks for the heads up Nattes à chat. We understand that a few users might be disruptive, either because they aren't reading the campaign's rules or deliberately decided to not follow them. Our rules clearly prohibits users from adding photos to articles in a language they do not speak. Users who breaks the rules are already disqualified. Generally, we encourage community to block users repeatedly being disruptive and we are supportive of the block of User:Godson18. Please if you identify any user who is being disruptive in frwiki after warning, feel free to block them and you could leave a note for us to that effect. It's a new campaign, there would be genuine mistakes, when such mistakes happen, we should show users how to do things correctly. That way, we will help them grow and become a good editor. Gift cards in US dollars

I see the prizes are in the form of US $ gift cards. Please consider asking each winner what currency they would like their prize in. In the past I have won a prize in a Wikipedia contest that was denominated in US dollars which was ultimately wasted; vendors in the US would mostly not ship to the UK, and those that would, charged excessive shipping fees. Low-quality fan art images repeatedly being added on WikiProject Middle-earth articles

Hi guys, we're getting a bit of confusion and annoyance on WikiProject Middle-earth articles as different people repeatedly add low-quality fan art images, contrary to project policy. One editor yesterday guessed that the different editors using similar edit summaries were sockpuppets and reported that misbehaviour; of course, that wasn't the right explanation, but it is an accurate measure of the trouble that is being caused. These editors new to the project all use the minimal edit summary #WPWP, which didn't tell our editors much if they'd never been over here to Meta-Wiki. They edit without looking at previous edits to see if the same image has been removed (repeatedly) from the article they're editing. They insert images anywhere, such as above or below the infobox, ignoring the note there not to add fan art. And they make multiple such edits rapidly, as if to score points, without any attempt to ensure the images are suitable: so far, no #WPWP image has been accepted on any Middle-earth article, and since the project has been thorough in its use of images, it isn't likely that any will be in future, unless we're lucky enough to have a major artist release a free image or two. However if you're in contact with w:en:User:Lilianfeliz who is taking part in the contest, can you ask them not to keep posting en-WP images at incorrect locations and to check their captions before publishing them? Unsuitable suggestions from "wd4wp" tool

One participant on en-wp linked to the https://fist.toolforge.org/wd4wp/#/enwiki300 tool, to explain why multiple participants keep reinserting the same images. Please communicate clearly to all participants in the contest that the suggestions from that tool contain a very large number of false positives and must not be followed blindly. In particular:

• Before inserting a file from that list, check if it is pertinent, appropriate and of sufficient quality for the article
• Check if somebody else has already inserted it.
• Check if somebody else has inserted it previously but was reverted.
• Check if some other, similar or better image is already in the article
• In particular, do not use the first few pages of the suggestion list. By now, the first 200 or so entries contain virtually nothing but false positives – images that have been inserted in those pages multiple times by multiple participants of the contest, but have all been reverted as inappropriate. Participants who continue to blindly reinsert these risk being blocked for edit-warring.

Suggestion: Require participants to have meaningful logs

(Reposted from the other talk page) In addition to edit summaries that actually describe changes, participants really should be logging which articles and images are being used in a separate page for monitoring. Would make it a lot easier to revert poor additions (which I'm seeing en masse on en-wiki) and maybe slow them down enough to not overwhelm editors. Problematic #WPWP edits

I did a quick analysis of the #WPWP edits so far this year on yuewiki. There is an absurd amount of WPWP rule violations, yet there is no clear indication of where to report them. NONE of the edit summaries contain any useful info. Only 2 edits added media to pages previously without any. There are also issues with captions in wrong languages or outright lack of captions. Although there aren't many #WPWP edits, each problematic edit this campaign brings in is extra burden for members of small communities, and adds NO value to these projects whatsoever. The organisers of this campaign need to let communities know about such a campaign to avoid confusion in the future, and should communicate more clearly to participants regarding acceptable practices. Is WPWP limited to individual projects with a user group or individual organiser overseeing WPWP activity on those projects? The link to a full list of Wikipedias on the campaign page makes things more complicated than it already is. If this campaign is not even related to yuewiki, should I go ahead and setup an AbuseFilter to block out these low quality media additions with no oversight at all? The contributions to zh-Yue is generally low (<50 pages) and could easily be dealt with. Individual administrator or abuse filter managers should not block a campaign unless there is a community consensus to do so. To be honest, I think it is more productive to fix these few errors than blocking a whole campaign because there is no local coordinator and a few individuals are being disruptive. Much of these contents were added by User: Tarih who appears to not following instructions. This user's contributions could be rollback and the user could be blocked per local blocking policy if they fail to stop after warning. We have now issued a final warning to this user based on this report and past reports. This user is not a newcomer and you may block the user if the disruption continues. As a patroller on nnwiki, I'd like to add that my experience is very similar to that first voiced in this thread. A random user will add a photo or video to an article that's already illustrated, without a caption or with a caption in a foreign language. This is not helpful, but it can't really be called abuse, either. All it does is add problems for patrollers - should we roll back the edit, fix the edit, try to communicate with this user who has no real presence on the wiki, or what? These users seem to add a lot of media across wikis, focussing on quantity rather than quality. I don't know if anything can be done about this sort of behaviour, but if there was a way to opt out of this project, I'd vote for that. --Ranveig (talk) 10:10, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Ranveig, disruptive users should be blocked per your community blocking policy if the disruption continues after warning. If you know a specific disruptive user, you could report them here as well. We are not supportive of bad behaviour and we encourage you to temporarily block any uncooperative editors. We made it clear in the campaign rules that users should not add photo to articles without a good caption and they are not allowed to add photos to articles in a language they neither speak nor understand. I've just reverted a competition entrant for adding a photo with no caption above an infobox when that photo was already elsewhere in the article, with a caption. Next time you run something like this, please provide a channel where a Wikipedia editor can flag bad edits directly to the competition organiser, who can take a look and - if necessary - get on that user's Wikipedia Talk page themselves and tell them that they've been disqualified and to stop playing.

Wikipedia editors shouldn't have to spend time understanding and warning and discussing with and explaining to and blocking a user, when that user's motivation is a cash prize from a competition which they've already been silently invalidated from, where they would presumably stop straight away if they knew that. --Lord Belbury (talk) 13:14, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

@T Cells: I had no intention of breaking the rules and disturbing quality of wikipedia articles...but before the rule got prime focus in the WPWP contest, i had started adding videos to the article in the languages that i don't speak. I just want to let you know that i added video only to those article written in languages except english of which i found the video in english version of that article and by translating the captions from english language to that language of which the article belongs, I managed to add videos to the articles in languages i don't speak. Thanks for providing additional context about your contributions. We honestly do not think that participants could correctly add caption to photos/videos/audios languages they do not speak. Hi, with this heading User:Tulsi Bhagat asked my as "Communication Manager, WPWP Campaign" on my talk page to take a survey. I won't do this for two reasons:

1. Why do you need my username in this evaluation? It's no longer anonymously then and that's one reason not to participate.
2. The other is the use of Google's ecosystem. Why do you use a data-collecting system if there are enough open source services?
