¡Hola! I am Gustavo Góngora (Basque surname meaning either "chieftain" or "small basin"), a Spanish-Uruguayan Wikimedian living in Manchester, England. I am a Ph.D. student in Translation and Intercultural Studies at the University of Manchester. I have an MPhil in English Linguistics and Language Acquisition from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. I'm interested in minority/endangered languages, hybridity, language mixing, and the cultural aspects of translation. I am active in many parts of Wikimedia (on and off). I am active on both the Spanish and the Catalan Wikipedia as an editor and administrator, as a volunteer with Wikimedia UK, Wikimedia Norge and Wikimedia España (and previously with Wikimedia Uruguay, Iberocoop and Amical), and some other international Wikimedia-related projects such as Wikimedia Community Ireland. In the past, I was also an ArbCom member on the Spanish-language Wikipedia. From 2011 through 2012 I served as a jury member of Wiki Loves Monuments.

I have been a Wikimedian since July 2006, an administrator and bureaucrat on the Spanish Wikipedia since April 2007, an administrator on the Catalan Wikipedia from 2010 to 2017, and a CheckUser on the Catalan Wikipedia for as long as I can remember. I have written more than 4,000 articles in different languages, mostly by translating from English into Spanish, Catalan, Asturian, French and Norwegian. I have been an active user on the Norwegian Wikipedia (bokmål) since 2012.

In 2009 I was a candidate for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. From 2010 to 2011 I was a board member of Wikimedia España (Spain).

I was a member of the Ombudsman Commission from February 2017 until February 2019.

You can sometimes find me on Freenode IRC in channels like #wikipedia-es, #wikipedia-ca, #wikipedia-no and #wikimedia. My nickname there is Gongora.

Reports

edit

2017

edit

In January 2017 I was appointed to the Ombudsman commission. In August I attended Wikimania 2017 in Montreal, Canada, and took part in the First Nations editathon. I also visited the Archive of Quebec. Throughout 2016 and 2017, I wrote articles on notable women on Wikipedia. I translated most of them from English into Catalan and Spanish. I was also quite active on the Norwegian Bokmal Wikipedia, and I attended the annual Wikimedia Norge meeting in Trondheim, Norway.

2018 and upcoming events

edit

In January 2018 I was re-elected as a member of the Ombudsman commission. I joined Wikimedia Community Ireland in March. In April I joined the Asturian-language Wikipedia to participate in the international Asturies-Cymru (Asturias-Wales) wikiproject. On June 18, 2018 I'll be in the Republic of Ireland for the Wikipedia and Academia Conference, organized jointly by Wikimedia Community Ireland and the University of Maynooth. I'll be sharing my findings in a 20-minute presentation entitled "A Study of Attitudes and Contributions to Language Mixing in English-to-Spanish Translations of Wikipedia Articles". You can find the full program here.

Wikimedia chapters

edit

I've been a member of the following Wikimedia chapters:

Amical Wikimedia

edit

Amical Wikimedia was my first chapter. I took part in different activities (including several meetings in Barcelona, and being a jury member for the Viquifabricació Project). The association funded my flight to Poland, when we attended Wikimania 2010. In 2009, I attended the Wikimania conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and co-presented the "Amical Wikipedia" workshop, calling for an official recognition of the chapter. I left Amical Wikimedia last year to focus on other projects in Norway.

Wikimedia España

edit

I was a board member (Public Relations) of Wikimedia España in 2011. I attended some sessions in Madrid, Barcelona, and Valladolid. I was a jury member of the first (European) edition of Wiki Loves Monuments. I have kept a low profile since then, although I still support the chapter and pay the annual membership fee. I was at the Wikimedia España stand during Wikimania 2017 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I also met with my colleagues in Wikimania 2016 Esino Lario (see group pictures below).

Wikimedia Norge

edit

I was an active member in 2016. I wrote some posts for the chapter during Wikimania 2016 in Esino Lario. I was also interviewed by TV2 at the Wikimedia Norge office in Oslo. In 2017, I attended the annual meeting in Trondheim, and then I spent some time with my colleagues in Montreal, Canada.

Wikimedia Ireland

edit

I joined Wikimedia Community Ireland in February 2018.
