Background
editSince the inception of Joburgpedia, we have had several enquiries from stakeholders in Cape Town who would like to hold a similar event in Cape Town. Cape Town has a rich diversity of cultural buildings and a group of heritage enthusiasts who are keen to get involved with this project.
Goal
editThe focus of this project is to increase Wikipedia coverage of iconic building around Cape Town City Centre with historic and heritage importance. This project aims to build on the success of Joburgpedia.

Activities
editThis pilot project aims to install QR codes next to existing heritage Western Cape plaques at 20 selected sites throughout the City. The sites will be decided on in consultation with Heritage Western Cape making use of the current list of heritage sites in the Western Cape.
Impact
editFit with strategy
editThis project meets a number of mission targets for Wikimedia strategic plan (through 2015). They are outlined below:
Increasing reach
editIncreasing Wikimedia's reach in the Global South is one of the salient points of Vision 2015. South Africa is crucial to this objective, as a key African hub. This project has met with great success in Johannesburg and we have received requests to implement it in Cape Town as well.
Participation
editThe potential of this project to increase participation is significant. Extensive focus will be put into creating lasting contacts with heritage enthusiasts in Cape Town whilst building off our relations with heritage organisations we know from the Wiki Loves Monuments competitions.
Quality
editWikimedia Commons has a very poor representation of Cape Town heritage sites. The available images are of moderate to acceptable quality. This project aims to improve the coverage of these heritage sites on commons and Wikipedia projects especially small languages.
Credibility
editThe involvement of local authoritities, heritage societies as partners we will be able to improve our credibility as a chapter and movement in handling such important issues as heritage and historical sites documentation.
Benefits
edit- This project will benefit the following online communities
- English Wikipedia
- Afrikaans Wikipedia
- Zulu Wikipedia
- Xhosa Wikipedia
- Sotho Wikipedia
- Xitsonga Wikipedia
- Setswana Wikipedia
Measures of success
editWe will consider this project a success if we can:
- Increase the number of quality articles about heritage sites in Cape Town on English Wikipedia
- Create new quality articles about heritage sites in Cape Town
- Encourage participation of Heritage Western Cape
- Promote participation in Wiki Loves Monuments
- Possible inclusion of UCT heritage Sites
- Encourage additional local Wikimedians to join the Wikimedia ZA chapter and get involved in this outreach project. At least have 5 members who join
For us as a small chapter, this project is crucial to sustaining our presence and relevance in the heritage sector as we seek to establish lasting ties with natural stake holders in this area. We would also see this as an opportunity to build on the success of Joburgpedia.
