Strategy team

edit

Hi. I notice you added yourself to the list at Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/People, and I was wondering if you could answer a question about that list: Are you and all the other people listed there WMF staff, and part of the "Movement Strategy" group under the Office of the Executive Director? I've been trying to update some information on the WMF's people, but the WMF's own website only lists four people in the "Movement strategy" team (Tanveer Hasan, Jodi McMurray, Kelsi Stine-Rowe, and Kaarel Vaidla). If everyone listed at Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/People are WMF staff, I'd like to update the Strategy team section at Template:WMF Staff to include all the individuals listed there, but I'm not sure of the status of these individuals. --Yair rand (talk) 21:26, 18 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Yair rand: Hi! The WMF website is updated slowly and I expect it would take several more months to add the new information. Most of the people listed are, indeed, WMF staff (some of whom have been already working for as long as a year, give or take). The exceptions would be Nicole Ebber and Anna Rees, who are technically WMDE staff.
Hope that helps. Sincere thanks for keeping an eye on the pages! --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 09:36, 19 September 2019 (UTC).Reply

Changing content of a translatable page

edit

Dear Abbad, please don't change translatable content like this. When English page is updated, corresponding units in other languages become highlighted as outdated. And it's one thing when there was a change in wording or maybe numbers were updated -- but it's a very different situation when the tarted page is completely different, like in this case. When you have not to update existing unit of text but to add a totally different unit, it's better to delete the old unit entirely and just create a new one. In practice this means that both text and unit number have to be removed: <translate><!--T:2--> LEARN</translate> → <translate>RECOMMENDATIONS</translate>. And then, when the page is marked for translation, system will assign this unit next available number. Does it make sense? (No action needed with the mentioned template now; it's my recommendation for the future.) -- Ата (talk) 12:37, 15 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Ата: Dear Vira (or is it Ana? I'm not so sure anymore), thanks for a yet one more informative technical tip. As I check it now, what you link here is indeed such a silly edit for one to make (unfortunately, the one had to be me). Your explanation makes full and total sense. In fact, I was recently given translation admin rights to deal with a bulk of Meta uploads, so I've spent last week exploring my new buttons and I'm not ashamed to say that I'm still figuring out how to use them competently. Since you're already freely and willingly stepped up to critique some of them, I'd like to invite you to be even kinder and look at an example or two of my more recent translation markups, and help point out any additional silly mistakes on my behalf. With hopes that it's not too much to ask of a fellow penguin fanclub member (is that a thing yet? it should be) --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 23:36, 15 February 2020 (UTC).Reply
As any other Wikimedia activity, translation administration has its tricks, and you'll know them all in no time   Those two page you mentioned are marked for translation in a fine way. (Though I'm not sure what your code for the category means). I hope to be helpful another time if needed. -- Ата (talk) 18:14, 17 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

moving pages without leaving a redirect:

edit

Thank you for work :) --Christoph Jackel (WMDE) (talk) 16:13, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hey Abbad, is it necessary (in this specific case to move Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Transition/List of Initiatives to Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Transition/List of Initiatives/Complete without leaving a redirect? I created a redirect in german, because I linked these initiatives like a thousand times from deWIKI and they all don't work anymore. Question asked differently: will Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Transition/List of Initiatives be created with different content (with possible translatiobn) or can Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Transition/List of Initiatives/de be kept as is? Best regards :)) --Christoph Jackel (WMDE) (talk) 14:14, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Oh I see you already replaced it. No answer necessary. I'm going to try finding & fixing the thousand wrong links on deWiki. :P Cheers --Christoph Jackel (WMDE) (talk) 14:16, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Christoph Jackel (WMDE): First, I'm really sorry for the sudden change. I was intending to ping you, but I figured I would do it once I've sorted the thing out. I will mark the new list for translation (already done) and I'll move the German translation into the simpler list myself. Would that be fine, or you would sitll rather have the German links lead to the full table? I'm so sorry for the messiness, but it was evident that the full table is highily unreadable and, at 300 statements, almost impossible to translte for volunteers --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 14:20, 27 October 2020 (UTC).Reply
No everything's fine, I fixed the 5 most important links already. The detailed list is more valuable for the community, I think, than the overwiew (that you created on suggestion of another community member, as far as I recall), but it would be extremly courteous of you and I will be forever grateful if you mark Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Transition/Global Conversations for translation :-) --Christoph Jackel (WMDE) (talk) 14:24, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Christoph Jackel (WMDE): Yes, I get the value and I was myself reluctant to do a change like this. However, the lack of translation, the community input you referred to and some outside feedback made me lean towards this (I'm happy to take it back if it seems this is unfavorable to the community, although it may get messier). I'll also mark the Global Events for translation in a couple of hours. If you have other feedbackm I'm happy to hear :) --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 14:47, 27 October 2020 (UTC).Reply
@Christoph Jackel (WMDE): It's now marked for translation --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 15:36, 27 October 2020 (UTC).Reply
It's translated now. Except for the fourth column (Suggested relevance) which is not marked for translation. Cheers --Christoph Jackel (WMDE) (talk) 14:11, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Christoph Jackel (WMDE): That's great! Thank you. I've intentionally left out the "suggested relevance" section because it's more of thing for Meta (I think each community would assess "relevance" differently) and also because it's susceptible to keep changing. In case you would like to translate it anyway, I'm happy to mark it for you --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 16:59, 28 October 2020 (UTC).Reply
@Christoph Jackel (WMDE): Hope I'm not spamming you by now! I've updated the initiatives page with a couple of really brief sentences, if you'd like to translate them as well --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 17:37, 29 October 2020 (UTC).Reply

Mark report for translation if published

edit

Hi Abbad, would you be so kind as to mark your second report for translation if you publish any? I would greatly appreciate because I'm going to write a shorter article than the previous one I published in the Kurier and like to translate and link to your report if there will be one. Sincere thanks and best regards, --Christoph Jackel (WMDE) 17:50, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Christoph Jackel (WMDE): Sure. There will be a second report (currently in the making), and I'm happy to mark it for translation. Kindly note that a significant part of the report will be added to the lightning talks page, would you like me to mark that for translation as well, or is it too much? Also, I would've marked the first report if you needed it, I just wasn't sure if anyone would translate that --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 11:37, 9 December 2020 (UTC).Reply
Wonderful. Lightning talks would definitely be helpful, although I'm not sure if I have enough time to translate all of them. Nobody asked for the translation of the first report up to now, so I do not consider translating it right now. Kind regards, --Christoph Jackel (WMDE) 11:40, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the report that I just translated. The german translation does not show up at the top of the page. Is this a cache problem or is anything missing? Kind regards Christoph Jackel (WMDE) 11:52, 15 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Christoph Jackel (WMDE): I fixed that (it was just a missing tag). Thank you so much for translating so quickly! I'll also mark the lightning talks page for translation, per our earlier conversation, once I'm done with preparations for widely sharing the December report --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 14:57, 15 December 2020 (UTC).Reply
You are so cool. It's such a pleasure working with you   Christoph Jackel (WMDE) 15:06, 15 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Christoph Jackel (WMDE): Apparently, I have unjustifiably forgotten to tell you how much of a pleasure I have been having working with you too :) Thank you for keeping the German pages updated! I was actually coming here to ping you quickly about a major NavBox update (apologies that we keep changing Strategy pages but, trust me, this one should be near final!). I would really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to update it, when convenient, as the navigation template is an important access point that I was very late in updating --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 10:00, 30 March 2021 (UTC).Reply

Why template?

edit

Why use templates on pages like Movement Strategy/Global Approach for Local Skill Development? It makes editing and translation difficult.--Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 13:33, 15 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Felipe da Fonseca: The objective of this template was to be a "placeholder" for whatever content will be created here later, rather than to be the essential content. Curiously, though, I thought the template would make translation easier because you will not have to translate the repeated titles and sentences multiple times. Why do you think it makes it more difficult? --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 10:45, 19 May 2021 (UTC).Reply
Sorry, I expressed myself badly... It doesn't get harder by the translation, for translation I imagine it's the same thing, but it does by editing the original, and in this case for obvious reasons: the template language is more difficult. Could you please help me with this page I created? It is about separating the old stage from the new stage. --Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 10:49, 19 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
One more comment: no templates are needed to facilitate translation, the translation program itself isolates what should and should not be translated.--Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 11:07, 19 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Felipe da Fonseca: It's fine, thanks for explaining. I have just checked the page and it seems pretty fine to me, I just removed the title which is specific to recommendations pages and may be slightly confusing. Otherwise, The header and structure are correct, and the initiatives are properly linked (I'm just curious if you intentionally removed the table of contents). If you'd like me to do anything else, let me know --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 11:09, 19 May 2021 (UTC).Reply
Yes, I purposely removed it, otherwise it would unstructure the page, is there a problem with that? Actually if you are aware of this initiative, yes I would like you to help me complement the page and subpages. Thank you for your attention.--Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 12:02, 19 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Felipe da Fonseca: No, it's up to you, just wanted to check. I'm happy to help with your page and other sub-pages. Ping me whenever needed :) --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 13:31, 20 May 2021 (UTC).Reply

Following up

edit

Hi Abbad, hope all is well with you. I wanted to follow up on the note at Talk:Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee/Elections#Votes_for_project-constrained_candidates_redistributed? and see if any progress has been made on WMF's side. I know you're not the one primarily responsible for this – could you let me know who is, and whether they have seen the thread? Since the election is now closed, I'm getting a bit nervous that the votes will be opened before the voting system is clarified as described there, so could I get a commitment that the Foundation will not open and count the votes before resolving this concern? Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t) 19:15, 26 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@L235: Hello Kevin. Thank you for the ping, I've been anxious myself to get you a response, but the topic needed some discussion within the team, and I didn't comprehend it enough to give you a reliable answer, so KVaidla (WMF) will be responding instead. I'm aware that he intends to do this ASAP (probably by tomorrow, since it's late in his time zone at the moment) --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 19:21, 26 October 2021 (UTC).Reply
Thank you for raising the question and for the ping! I have now responded in the main thread here. --KVaidla (WMF) (talk) 19:55, 26 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Obsolete pages

edit

Can I ask what's going on with Movement Strategy/Updates/init and Movement Strategy/Updates/2021/49? They've obviously not been published and Movement Strategy/Updates seems to have moved to a different paradigm. * Pppery * it has begun 20:40, 1 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Pppery Thank you so much for this notification! You're correct, I've abandoned that mode of distribution/structuring a while ago, and I forgot to clean up, which I shouldn't have. I went back and also found a third outdated page - I nominated the three of them for deletion --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 15:51, 2 April 2022 (UTC).Reply

MCDC/Updates/40 for March (disambiguation/translation)

edit

Hello, Abbad, thank you always to keep the communities informed. One small question re: Movement Charter/Drafting Committee/Updates for March 2022. It says:

The Board liaisons will be present for the last 30 minutes in one of each two meetings.

I am not sure how you dispatch liaisons to that comm's meetings. I understand we have two liaisons. Then how will they time their attendance?

  • Two person for either odd/even numbered meetings, or once in two meetings?
  • One alternating each other for, say liaison_y for even numbered meetings, and liaison_z visa versa?

Could you maybe add such plain description therein? Cheers, -- Omotecho (talk) 06:46, 8 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Omotecho Thank you for raising this important point! The case is the first one you've proposed: "There are two people attending once every two meetings". Both liaisons are present at the same time. I hope this answers your question. I've made a slight edit to the page that may help clarify as well? Happy to edit it more --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 22:09, 8 April 2022 (UTC).Reply
Done Oh, I see, everything is clear with me. Thank you indeed to take extra mile for translation. Cheers, and arigatō -- Omotecho (talk) 03:30, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

MS/Updates trouble

edit

A peculiar result of having {{CURRENTMONTH}} in Template:Movement Strategy/Updates/Snippet is that right now Movement Strategy/Updates still contains March news but 'translate' button in the corner of the snippet already links to the April issue. I hope this is the reason why I can't find where I need to go to get rid of that pink color on Movement Strategy/Updates/uk. Can't think of an improving edit at the moment, so just letting you know. Ата (talk) 10:25, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'm here with Movement Strategy/Updates again. The 'translate' button in the corner of the snippet works just fine from the English page version, but doesn't work from /uk subpage, and the structure of the whole thing you set up is so complicated to me, that my head spins when I try to understand what has to be edited where 🙂 Could you help? -- Ата (talk) 07:49, 22 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Some updates

edit

Hi @Abbad (WMF), I have made some tweaks and added some translation markup at Movement Strategy/Updates/2022/July for convenience on translated pages (I was translating it into Urdu and I found the translated version weird with several headings and text still in English). Since you have made this page and also marked this for translation earlier, please let me know if my markup is helpful. ;) ─ The Aafī (talk) 14:04, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

@The Aafī Thanks! Both for the translation and for looking after the page. As for it being helpful: that honestly depends :). I intentionally left the title unmarked because the regular use of this page in the process I do is to keep this updates portal up-to-date. Therefore, I mark for translation only the parts directly quoted in the updates portal. Of course, once the updates are removed from the portal, people may depend on the archives to access them, so it would make sense to mark them for translation then! --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 14:37, 7 December 2022 (UTC).Reply

Clarification

edit

Salams @Abbad (WMF), I hope you are doing well. I was going through MC detailed feedback to notice how much has the DCW been heard and I was glad to find about 14 citations to DCW's feedback. However, under resilience, there is a sentence where you need to clarify "our community". The usage of "Resilience" was highly flagged by our community members, as the language is related to corporate mission statements. Others might get confused by this. Thanks and regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:12, 4 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@TheAafi Thank you for highlighting this! I have made a slight edit to hopefully mitigate some of the ambiguity. Also, thank you for the DCW community feedback, very glad to see your voice in the Movement Charter process! --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 15:24, 9 February 2023 (UTC).Reply
@Abbad (WMF), not sure why I didn't receive the ping. Anyways, I'm happy to see this having been fixed. Thanks a lot. DCW looks forward to engaging more in the movement-wide processes. ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:54, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

MC conversations reports in wrong category

Hi Abbad, I have created the Category:Movement Charter community consultation (2023).
