editHi. As I announced, I will ask you to participate in a heavy problem which is now urgent on the czech wikipedia. Sure, I could tell you many things, and you can believe me or not. Therefore I asked some people like Daniel Meyer (who understand the situation on the czech wiokipedia but do not paritcipate there) to follow the development and to give their statements here. These statements schould be given here soon or later. Please have a look there. I think, that after some people did transfered these problems to the pages of Wikimedia (here and here again, we have there already some more archived pages) it is necessary to opone them and to do something. I am not somebody who would like to exclude people who have onother point of view liek me. But the project has the name Wikipedia. And we have do to this and this. When somebody likes to do something esle, so ok, he or she can create anew project. Here, in Wikipeia, we should continue to do Wikipedie, not a nonsense. This is my POV. Thx. -jkb- 19:28, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Archiving at Wikiversity :-)
editHiya, I've been archiving at Talk:Wikiversity, which was just mind-bogglingly hyper-huge. But, there were already two (short) archives: "Old" and "Archive" - "Archive" has no history, whereas "Old" does. My question is: could/should these two be merged? It is confusing, as I've just created Archive 2, which contains what look like the original discussions on Wikiversity, and if so might be better off called "Archive 1". Sorry if you're too busy - I'll ask somewhere/one else if you prefer. Salut. Cormaggio @ 19:16, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
- ah, archives :-) Well, if there is no history, yes, just merge them. At least, most comments are likely to be signed :-) Anthere

Request for steward action on English Wikibooks
editFlorence
Over at English Wikibooks we have recently had a number of votes on "requests for de-admining", which have been going for just over one month. I'd be grateful for a steward to come to the project and carry out the requested de-admining for those Wikibookians where there is at least 80% support for removal of sysop rights. The relevant link is here. Many thanks (in advance) for your help. Kind regards, Jguk 14:43, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Deletion of mo wikipedia
editHello Anthere,
I would like to ask you to respect the vote made on the Mo:wikipedia. The vote is for deletion of the wikipedia. It's so absurd to have both of them, imagine one will come up with the idea to have a french wikipedia or german wikipedia written in arabic script. It has to be deleted and as soon as possible. The vote for closing was done more than 2 months ago. How many months will take to delete it? Do we have to wait several years for this joke of Mark? The people voted and now please do something. Merci Anthere. Fratele lui Bonaparte, il cunosti? 10:30, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- the mail sent by Bogdan to the wikipedia-l had for title : Voting for the closing down of Moldovan Wikipedia. Not vote for the deletion of the Moldovan Wikipedia
- this mail first sentence was : The Moldovan Wikipedia community has decided to close down the Wikipedia. Not the deletion of the Wikipedia
- this mail was send on the 5th of march. So we were informed of the outcome of the vote about a week ago, not 2 months ago
- I do not have shell access and even if I did, I would have no idea how to actually close or delete the wikipedia
- Even if I did know how do do that, I think I would not support deletion. Only closing.
Anthere 20:39, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Hello Anthere,
- It doesn't matter how Bogdan posted since the vote for the future of Moldovan Wikipedia was for "deletion of the moldovan wikipedia" as you can see here: [[2]]. How Bogdan said is quite natural that he meant The Moldovan Wikipedia community has decided to delete that problematic Wikipedia and to get rid of all this problem users that have been attacking romanians....A freeze of it will be just a temporary solution and you may expect several months maybe years of conflict on that theme. You have now the chance to solve properly this problem. Do you want that in one month someone will ask you to reopen that problematic wikipedia? I expect Mark will do this in the future.
- what differences are between closing and deletion? A closing without deletion is not a proper solution in this case. You have to reach a solution on the longer-term not on short-term. I am much in the favour of deletion of the moldovan wikipedia since this was the result of the voting.
I hope you understand how weird is this situation of having such a wikipedia. Someone will ask you in the future to create an english wikipedia written in greek alphabet. What do you say? Do you accept it? Or do you support only closing without deletion? I'm thinking very serious of opening such a wikipedia to see how support would I have for it. There are many users that do care about the deletion of Moldovan Wikipedia since is a mistaken project from the beginning. Many people like Mark count on ignorance of other people, a lot of people does not know where Moldova is on the map, don't let yourself influenced by him.
Cheers! Fratele lui Bonaparte, il cunosti? 08:36, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

editThats the coolest expression i've heard in france. I, bockspur, work as a researcher @ the university i study at and often pull overniters and what have you. The sole pleasure i reserve unto myself is to occasionally edit a couple of pages in my field and/or interest using the various WiFi nodes and land terminals around my building. Most recently this has been denied to me by the likes of someone known as the BorgQueen et al. They seem to somehow wish to collectively punish all the people within 500m of my building(low estimate i don't personally know the extant of the WiFi) for the actions of a few. If there is vandalism using a particular IP , then perhaps a ban of some moderate time should be implemented not to exceed a few hours as opposed to multi-day bans.
//22:51, 10 March 2006, BorgQueen (Talk) blocked 128.54.74.4 (contribs) (expires 22:51, 11 March 2006) (vandalism)// //22:51, 10 March 2006, BorgQueen (Talk) blocked 128.54.74.5 (contribs) (expires 22:51, 11 March 2006) (vandalism)// //22:50, 10 March 2006, BorgQueen (Talk) blocked 128.54.74.6 (contribs) (expires 22:50, 11 March 2006) (vandalism)// //22:50, 10 March 2006, BorgQueen (Talk) blocked 128.54.74.7 (contribs) (expires 22:50, 11 March 2006) (vandalism)// //22:50, 10 March 2006, BorgQueen (Talk) blocked 128.54.74.8 (contribs) (expires 22:50, 11 March 2006) (vandalism)//
There appears to be some sort of script that auto-renews these bans. This strikes me as being very un-wiki. It has denied me a bit of joie de vie :) any assistance would be greatly appreciated , merci beaucoup in advance. The BorgQueen person does not allow people to post to his/her talk page thus preventing me from presenting my argument to him/her. wikipedia userBockspur 19:11, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi,
I explained the evidence for marking User:Antivanderbilt as a sockpuppet of User:Math. (No one bothered until now, because Math refused to tell whether they are the same person, and since he himself didn't (and still doesnt) say the accusation is wrong, we considered this a non-issue.) To sum it up:
- Antivanderbilt was registered a few hours after Math was blocked for reverting;
- the name refers to a debate about "anti-something" usernames he participated in;
- it also refers to some personal information of the blocking admin, which is not common knowledge (but Math knew about);
- Antivanderbilt's first (and only) article-space edit is an attack against the blocking admin;
- the edit summary refers indirectly to the edit war Math was blocked in. (He put a stub template on an article which at the time was featured on the main page, and was attacked for trying to discredit Wikipedia; he got blocked for violating his probation by readding the template twice; Antivanderbilt removed a "sources needed" template from another article saying problems in articles shouldn't be advertised. (Also, Math has a long history of disrupting to prove his point, so this kind of behaviour is in itself characteristic of him.))
I hope this clarifies things. In my opinion, the claim of sockpuppetry would be justified even without an IP match.
- It certainly clarifies things. Math asked me if the CheckUser results were sufficient to conclude for sockpupetry. Basing myself on the checkuser results, I said that no, it was not sufficient. But editing from the same firm in another country is certainly suggesting there is something odd. I would still say it is unsufficient to conclude for sock puppetry alone. However, added to the above points, it certainly suggest sockpuppetry. Probably enough to conclude there is sockpuppetry indeed. Anthere
-- hu:Tgr (talk) 14:26, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Also, could you please clarify whether your comment was meant as a request to remove the sock template? Math seems to have understood it that way, and uses it as justification for yet another silly edit war...
- certainly not. It is not a justification. Added to the information above, I'd say that the template should be there. Anthere

As far as I know, Math edits the Hungarian Wikipedia from Finland. Do you think that there can be two so similar Hungarian Wikipedia editors working for the same company in Finland? -80.98.226.194 14:45, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- it might be. It seems many editors of WP are related to this firm... Still, the arguments above indeed suggest sockpuppetry. Thanks a lot for the clarification :-) Anthere
Let us also lsiten to a counter opinion. Because the evidence presented to you is not even true. And the evidence, which is true, is not so strinong as you think.
1) "Antivanderbilt was registered a few hours after Math was blocked for reverting;"
Considering that I was blocked several times, this has approximatelly 80% chance for any registration at that time. So this os not an evidence.
2) "the name refers to a debate about "anti-something" usernames he participated in;" as there are also other users with the name "anti-..." this does not mean anything. There were also others participating in this debate. I was not the user, who was the topic of this debate.
3) "it also refers to some personal information of the blocking admin, which is not common knowledge (but Math knew about);"
You do not have evidence that I knew about it. But anybody may have knew about it, since the information was on a blog.
4) "Antivanderbilt's first (and only) article-space edit is an attack against the blocking admin;"
So, anybody, who does not agree with Nyenyec, is a sock? Come on!
5)"the edit summary refers indirectly to the edit war Math was blocked in."
This is not true, moreover, this is a counter evidence. Since
A) This summary refers to another, similar case, than the dispute, I took part in
B) Antivanderbilt had the opposit opinion than me!
"Do you think that there can be two so similar Hungarian Wikipedia editors working for the same company in Finland? "
1) There are. I know somebody, who even used the same IP, as me. And I know another user. Moreover, the one, who used my IP was blocked, because of my block. So blocking such IP addresses of proxies is a w:en:collective punishment. Civilized nations are disgusted by such collective punishments.
2) Moreover. The company, you refer to, is multinational. Nobody can know for sure, if I really work in Finland. Moreover, nobody can know, if Antivanderbilt works for the company in Finland. He or she may work in Vancouver, Tokyo, Budapest, Germany, and many other places. There are several hunderd people working for this company in Budapest. There are several hundred Hungarian people working for this company elsewhere in the world. All of these users have IP addresses, which do not indicate geographical location. The poeple in Hungary may use the same proxi as the people in Finland, or proxies, which do not have georgraphical indications in their name. I also can think other possibilities, how a user could use even a Finnish IP by using a Finnish acces point from Hungary by mobile phone. Regarding the company, which is involved, you know, that this is quite a probable possibility.
So as a summary ther may be two possibilities open for Antivanderbilt not being my sock.
1) He/she may be somebody working somewhere in the world working the same company, and he/she has similar opinion than me. He/she even may be one of my friends, whom I invited to Wikipedia.
2) He/she may disgaree with me and traped me.
3) You may say that you do not beleive in such chances, you may say that in your opinion, Antivanderbilt is my sock with lets say 80% probability ( I do not know, how such an estimate could be computed). So, if you think, he/she is 80% my sock. Is this enough for blocking, and for such a claim?
Would you vote for a death penalty with such evidence?
An additional information. I know 2 admins on the Hungarian Wikipedia, who both Work in Nashwille at the same workplace, and usually agree with each other, their edits refer to each other, and reflect to each other. This users are w:hu:User:Nyenyec and w:hu:User:Dhanak. Are they socks? There is plenty of similar evidence against them. Much more, than in this case. So, reductio ad absurdum, we arrive at the conlcusion, that such evidence is not enough for proclaiming somebody a sock.

Socks IP blocks collective punishment, WP policies
editLet me put here also my general opinion about these questions.
1) The policies and practices in WP are not quite serious and do not serve justice. The practice that you claim socks identity and block users on pure speculation is only one case, where justice is not done.
2) It is generallily not right to claim somebody to be a sock of anybody else. In the iinternet, and especially with the resources of a normal admin or chekckuser, nobody has strong enough evidence to establish a claim about personal identity. Such claims are not serious, they are unjustified. There is no need for claiming somebody a sock, and there is no means to do this in a just manner. WP should delete such policies.
3) IP is not a personal identifier. You should not use an IP to identify persons. Even identity of ID should not be published in WP, since publishing such information is against the law.
4) IP is not a personal identifier, so block of IP is not a personal punishment. It is a collective punishment. WP should not keep such a medieval policy. You should not block entyre companies, interet cafes, institutes just because you want to block a person. Since there are dynamic IP addresses, even an IP, which is not a company-proxy should not be blocked. It has no sense.
Anybody, could edit WP after he is blocked, and you could not do anything against it, only if you block the entire internet. The tricks are too many in this field, do not start a war against internet GIK's!
--Math 16:43, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Just to be sure
1) I never harmed WP.
2) I have a lot of significant contributions and 4 fewatured article in HUngarian WP. So I am not a vandal.

In general, it is not our policy to allow people to set up 'hot spider' services, where each time someone performs a search on their site, the query is redirected to our site. Such services add to the load on our servers, even though the end user is not using our site.
Instead, we recommend that you either: (a) use the database dumps, or (b) contact us for a live feed.
For downloadable dumps of Wikipedia's article database, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_download as well as http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data_dumps.

the problem with the bot
editHi Florence. The first i do is to ask you: how is Thomas – and you? I hope OK. - - - So. I write you here as here is not the right place for me, i think: i was a sysop on cs.wiki a long time but not anymore, as you remember, now I am a sysop-bureaucrat on the new s:cs:wikisource, where Egg is my first sysop. Both me and Egg were elected by the community on the cs.wiki. And first, i can confirm, that the problem with the bot has been discussed on the cs.wiki, and secondly, we discussed it also together. Everybody from the community was for this solution, maybe just too early, as the possibility for the bureaucarats, to give somebody sysop and bot rights was very new ( I think some three days). And I was informed about each step of the bot as well. - - - What Vit Zvanovec is writing there is a f.....g nonsence, I would wish you to understand czech to read all his blog (he gave you the link), where the whole commuhity on cs.wiki is called shitty pigs, communist, fascists, the should be hung on the lattern (as the so called bolshevik Egg) etc. I will inform myself about your conclusions concerning the sysop-bot. - - - All the best to Thomas, the other children, your family and you (sorry I put you on the last place, but... :-)). -jkb- 12:26, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

about ruwiki
editHello, could you please help me with one my idea? That's (completely anonymous) referrers and hits counter placed on Toolserver. This is supported by most ruwiki users and we're near to enable this for everyone (including not registered visitors). There is also a scheme (by request of some users, that's condition of their "Support") to disable counter by adding one line into personal monobook.js. See ruwiki pgcounter for more info.
What do you think about? Our ruwiki editors need this tool so it would be great if there is nothing against it. Edward Chernenko 17:25, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Brion said it was probably okay to use this for the moment, but eventually, developers will want to replace it. (note that I have no idea what he means here, I am not a developer. It is best you ask him directly next time). Anthere 21:58, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you. We've enabled this scheme. Edward Chernenko 19:22, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Re fi-wiki checkusers and Jniemenmaa
editIn the fi-wiki coffee room, you announced that Jniemenmaa had apparently breached the Wikimedia privacy policy. I'd like to know how this happened. I have not seen any publication of IP addresses or other private data on fi-wiki, and as a CheckUser myself, I'd like to know what exactly went wrong. We have crafted our own CheckUser policy, which should be at least as strict as the Wikimedia policy, so I'm just making sure we are all on the same page as to what CheckUsers can and can't do. If you reply here, I can translate your answer to fi-wiki. --MikkoM 20:01, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
I think it is best not to publish the email the board got on a public wiki. Do you have one or several email addresses where I can forward this email ? I have little doubt the breach was done toward a problematic user, but even problematic users may cause problems with regards to their privacy rights :-( Note that the issue was raised on the checkuser mailing list and that none of you have commented. Are you on that list at all ? -- ant
Hi Anthere!
You left this message in fi-wiki about check user policy. Could you be more specific on the point that was breached. The reason I ask you this, is that I think you were contacted by Auru Aro or one of his severl sock puppets, and AA has made false accusations - pure lies - about that issue in fi-wiki. Best regards, Samulili 06:23, 12 June 2006 (UTC) (Well, MikkoM was faster.)
- ah ! this might be ! Can you provide me a list of his usual sockpuppet names ? Auru Aro is not the name I got an email from. If that happened to be so, I will apology to Jniemenmaa naturally. We received several complaints in the past weeks, and more than one revealed a decent percentage of value. Anthere
- At least these are, afaik, his sockpuppets: Arto Alberg, Jari Jylhä, Muokkaaja, Ola, and Pentti Hämäläinen. The person is apparently known for bad behaviour elsewhere on the Internet and he never uses his real name. I have not used check user function to tell the sockpuppets - I don't have those rights. However, his sockpuppets are easy to recognize: His interests involve a few municipalities in Southern Finland and the way he writes is unique. Also, when he writes anonomymously, it's always from the same range of IP-addresses.
- This is how I was able to tell that Arto Alberg is Auru Aro. In fi-wiki AA blaimed Jniemenmaa for revealing AA's IP to me (via email, not in Wikipedia). This is a pure lie and I was able to make my deductions before Jniemenmaa used check-user. I fear that he has been telling the same lie to you. Kind regards, Samulili 13:35, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
I was quite chocked when I read your message on the Finnish Village Pump. I am quite surpriced that you didn't try to contact me in any way before making such an announcement?
- I tried. On the checkuser list. It seems none of the finnish checkusers are on it. I'd say that is a problem.
Since you (or the foundation?) is accusing me of doing something wrong I want to know exactly what you think I did wrong. Also please post your evidence of me breaching the privacy policy to the Finnish Village Pump. I think the users of the Finnish Wikipedia have the right to know what has happened since you are threatening to remove checkuser rights from the entire Finnish Wikipedia (if I read your message right).
- Do you have a private email so that I can clarify ? Except if the case reveal to be the sock puppet mentionned above. If so, I will limit myself to remind that being a sockpuppet is not a legal issue, but giving private information is a legal issue. As for threatening to remove checkuser from the entire Finnish Wikipedia, sorry, but this is certainly not what I wrote. The Finnish wp is big enough that it needs its own checkusers and has several. No reason to remove them, nor even you. However, I'd like to remind about the policy and ask that at least one of you be easy to contact through the checkuser list so that I do not have to run after you.
- I have a working email adress set on both fi.wiki and en.wiki. But I am still puzzled. Surely you can give me a diff to the edit where I breached the privacy policy by giving out personal information. If such a breach has happened then that edit should be at least be removed from the history of the talk page (I assume this is about information given on a talk page. I am forced to guess what you are talking about since you give me absolutely zero information to go on.) -- Jniemenmaa 10:20, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
About the checkuser mailing list: I've tried subscribing to the list three times now, but so far I have recieved no mails from the list. -- Jniemenmaa 06:52, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- hmmmm. Can you try again and I'll ask the moderator to have a look if a request comes in ? I do not think any of the fi checkusers is on it, otherwise, they would probably have reacted.
- If I was wrong, I apology and will apology on your village pump. I receive complaints too often probably, to give it all the attention necessary. I still think necessary to say that we can get hurt by editors when private data is revealed, even though they are bad editors. Greetings Anthere
- I've tried subscribing now for a fourth time. -- Jniemenmaa 10:20, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, I was behind on processing checkuser-l subscription requests. You should now be subscribed. Kelly Martin 13:14, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
May I take this opportunity to add my note of concern on this issue: the CheckUser tool has been a source of a prolonged and at times heated debate on the Finnish Wikipedia. I find it very unconstructive that accusations of breach of policy by CheckUser users which appear not have been properly examined are posted on public fora such as the Village Pump in the Finnish Wikipedia. May I therefore urge you to provide publicly the evidence you possess (obviously with due care to privacy issues) or withdraw your posting urgently. Moreover, I should think that not trying to contact Jniemenmaa via email or his userpage (and limiting any efforts to contact him solely on a mailing list which he was not a subscriber to due to no fault of his own) shows poor judgement. --Lendu 13:27, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
Correct. It was poor judgement. I apology and go on the fi page. Anthere
