student involvement

I like what you wrote about collaborative learning (Wikiversity#Vision). It seems like the wikiversity main page should have a section called "the role of the student" which instructs potential students to look over the listings of "courses", but also to take an active role in creating the conditions that they need for learning. In particular, there could be a page where students can describe what they want to learn about and facilitators could could point towards available "courses" or work with the student to set up a new "course" that fits the student's needs. I put quotes around "courses" because I'm not sure that wikiversity should be dealing with what we traditionally think of as a university course. I set up the Cell Biology course to be a "portal" that invites students to start a collaborative project. --JWSurf 15:06, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Wikiversity priorities

I see that Angela invited input about wikiversity for the board meeting. I wonder if it would be useful to try to provide a short discussion of short-term and long-term priorities.

• near-term: "courses which could interface with other Wikimedia projects, Wikipedia, Wikibooks"....looking at the slow progress of wikiversity so far, I think providing "courses flagship courses" that would initially be "service courses" for existing wikimedia projects is the best way to initiate growth of the project.
• mid-range: "sourceforge for researchers and teachers"....an open community for developing online learning tools for the wiki user interface
• long-term: "be a university".....I take this to mean that there would be an effort to replicate existing online universities in wiki format. I think this only makes sense in the context of what makes sense for the wiki user interface. We must avoid Nupedia-type errors that arise from trying to reproduce non-wiki institutions in wiki format. Rather, we must build on the power of the wiki interface to take old ideas in new directions.

Yes, I saw you adding this comment yesterday. I also read it and read again the page :-) And my thought was "ya, I can't either, too bad" :-)

Here is the problem :-) I will normally enter hospital tomorrow afternoon to be induced on monday. Which could take time... Add at least 5 days hospital stay, I won't be back until next week end, and possibly not in good shape enough to stay sitting in front of a computer for long :-) So, it is unlikely you see much of me for at least 2 weeks. Technically I'm on an MSc program, but it's just a streamlined process to PhD, so I'll be writing up a dissertation this year and then continuing the same research over the next three years. I had planned on looking at Wikiversity, but since it's just too complicated (and unstable), I'll be charting the progress of Wikimedia UK (you can see more details from my user page). Still, I'm very interested in Wikiversity and what w can dp with it, although i haven't been as active in discussions or rewrites of the proposal lately. But I remain hopeful that something of real value will come out of these efforts. By the way, would you consider logging in (getting a user account) to make messages easier? Anyway, cheers. Great to hear from you! Very glad to hear things are moving forward and that there is potential in the Wikiversity project. I have been getting very positive feedback from those in the fire service field and I believe once it is going strong, the Wikiversity will be an incredible resource for the fire service community. As I told the person who left the message you responded to, I really don't know anything about the board or the happenings, but I do see such an incredible impact this can have on the educational community and hope there is a lot of support for this. I also understand that new projects take time and careful planning to be implemented correctly. If there is anything I can do to help further this along, please feel free to plug me in where needed (please pass this along to the board as well.) I guess the one thing I see (and why I'm bringing up about some advisory board) is there is no point group or leadership to bring all of this together. I think if there can be a core group to do so, Wikiversity would come along a lot faster. Getting that core leadership will be a big step towards moving the Wikiversity forward.

BTW, how is your PhD coming? I'm still ABD, but getting closer to getting it done. I understand now why so many folks drop off when dissertation comes along. But I am committed....--Mfinney 22:53, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

I have read your response to my suggestion on the talk page of MetaProject to Overhaul Meta and I agree with your comments. Is there anything that I can do independently from the Special projects committee that would be of assistance in this task? Wikiversity Proposal Tasks and Schedule

Hi Cormaggio, A courtesy headsup. I dropped the following message with appropriate tailoring on the discussion page of each of the other Wikiversity activation committee members advertised in the public defination page of the committee. I still would appreciate any specific information you have available.

I have asked Cormaggio specifically when the Wikiversity proposal is going to be submitted to the Board for authorization to proceed with permanent dedicated URLs and wiki space. I get nothing back but vague generalities. Mr. Wales has indicated on the public Foundation mailing list in response to queries that to the best of his knowledge Wikiversity (within some appropriate initial scope) has overwhelming support from every single Board Member. The only holdup on its approval and activation is the complete lack of any information from the Wikiversity community/proponents in response to the Board's fairly minor inquiries. In view of this information do you have a feel for what specific tasks need to be completed and when they be finished? Is this a manpower issue or coordination issue between the appointed members of the activation committee? Is it a matter of final technical editing of wording such that a majority of the five acting committee members agree it is ready to go? I, and possibly others, would appreciate some specific information if it is available on how we can proceed immediately as there has been no visible action for months in the public space. I did some work on Wikiversity/Example. I had been thinking that page might become the Main Page for Wikiversity when it launches, but I put another idea on its talk page. I still feel that most of the Wikiversity-related pages at Wikibooks should be archived at Wikiversity when it launches and scavenged for useful information, but not incorporated wholesale into the working pages of Wikiversity. They are too full of stray ideas that do not match the revised project proposal. Among the other pages I created and linked to Wikiversity/Example (see the navigation box at the bottom of that page), I think you should be sure to take a look at Faculty club.....it starts to get into some important Wikiversity policy issues that have not been discussed very much. --JWSurf 01:39, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

"is it all new content, what you've written" <-- Much of what I added to Meta during the last 2 days is similar to what has previously existed at Meta, Wikibooks, the Collaboration Wikia, the Academia Wikia and the Education Wikia. The newest ground covered concerns my attempt to suggest how Wikiversity could try to make space for some original research in the context of Wikiversity's educational mission. For the new pages I created, I put them all into the Wikiversity category and linked most of them together with the new navigation box. I have no serious objection to using Wikiversity:Foo, but I was hoping that many of these pages would be moved to a wikiversity.org domain in the not too distant future and deleted from Meta. --JWSurf 13:24, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

just uploaded a Powerpoint presentation that I held on Friday at my school about the Wikiversity (I had to report on my research). Reuse at will. I put it in the Moodle room at http://evideo.fhtw-berlin.de/moodle/mod/resource/view.php?inpopup=true&id=974. There's a typo I am too lazy to fix, but I wanted to show how using Moodle could work. I do see, however, that uploading stuff to Commons first does make me fix the license question. Thanks for your note. The above are just some nuggets of thoughts: Fragments of visioning and pondering as I absorb the Wikiversity proposal. Perhaps a list of different visions in seed form, perhaps like this or perhaps more articulated, could be expanded and then prioritized for most relevance to Wikiversity. Has something like this been done--if so, where? If not, I think this could be interesting to do. One aim in inviting comments in such an exercise could be to access various alternative and emergent discourses about collaborative learning and scholarship. Language subcommittee archival

Hello Cormaggio. Messages you send to the language subcommittee are automatically saved to its private archives, but censored in the public archives (see example). The public archives allow the community to read most discussions, but it is an opt-in system.

Even if you agree to public archival, you can choose on a case-by-case basis to exclude a discussion, comment, or even fragment from the public archives (just writing "don't archive this email" would suffice). Is it okay to make your messages public? —Pathoschild 19:28:36, 03 Նոյեմբեր 2007 (UTC)

Wikimania Oxford bid

Some time ago you indicated your support of the Oxford 2010 Wikimania Bid, and it was recieved with much gratitude. I now ask if you could could help support our bid by contributing to the bid page that is located at: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2010/Bids/Oxford. Now is the critical period for work to continue on the bid as the official bidding period has now started and the jury has been formed.

I do not ask for huge swathes of time, just enough that with eveyrone working on this, it can be completed in time to the high standard required in a bid. For the bid page, an excellent source of information is the travel wiki article on the City of Oxford which is found at: http://wikitravel.org/en/Oxford. The chance of bringing Wikimania to the UK is the best so far and i expect the best chance for many years. With a fresh and stong UK chapter we have an amazing opportunity to put ourselves on the map.
