Third party reusers of Wiki content

edit

Hi, I'm following up on what you posted in the Consultation page. I hear a lot about 3rd party websites reusing Wikipedia content and cutting out Jimbo's sad-eyed banners but I want to ask someone experienced, what are the top sites that reuse Wiki content? I only know of Wikiwant (which isn't a site but browser extension). I also know from my RU-wiki experience of academic.ru, which publishes a few top encyclopedias plus copies of Wiki content. Is there a list of the top offenders? Thanks! --SSneg (talk) 22:35, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Center for Research Libraries

edit

It may be too late, but representation from the w:Center for Research Libraries could be helpful.LeadSongDog (talk) 21:28, 28 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

@LeadSongDog: I imagine you're referring to WikiCite: I agree, we were also trying to invite people from DPLA and other orgs in the library/scholarly tech field. Unfortunately, the event is already at capacity. We're considering organizing a potential follow-up event in a few months from now, if the first edition is successful and we can secure additional funding.--Dario (WMF) (talk) 23:02, 28 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Sounds like you've struck a vein of pent-up interest :-) Got any plans for telepresence, online conferencing, webcasting, etc? LeadSongDog (talk) 16:06, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
@LeadSongDog: regretfully not for this specific event, mainly due to the coordination costs of supporting remote and local participation, but also the fact that it's mostly designed as a hackathon with little room for presentations. At the very minimum we should be able to point participants to an IRC channel where other people can join.--Dario (WMF) (talk) 17:16, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dario, it's been a while. The tiny clutch of gnomes behind OpenLibrary software are looking at this issue at GitHub. If you could shed some light it would be useful. LeadSongDog (talk) 18:48, 4 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@LeadSongDog: thanks for the heads up, posted a comment there.--Dario (WMF) (talk) 17:01, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your presentation at the Colloquium du DEC (June 5th 2018)

edit

Hi Dario,

I was there at your presentation on the 5th of June for le Colloquium du DEC. First of all, thank you for your presentation. I took some notes to share in one of French Wikipedia's newsletter. I had a few questions:

  • Is the Powerpoint of the presentation available somewhere online ? Some data were very interesting and I've never heard about them. I think it could be interesting to share it with the rest of the French community.
  • I was also wondering whether there were any plans for the Research Team to reach out the other linguistic communities and share informations on research works. You spoke of the newsletter here on meta and the partnership with The Signpost. There's no plans to set up the meta-translationtool for it ?

Assassas77 (talk) 16:25, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Assassas77: thanks for coming out to the talk! It was great to have a crowd from the French editor community in the audience. I uploaded a PDF of the slidedeck here, feel free to circulate it: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.6477680 I am not aware of existing efforts to translate the newsletter in other languages. The project is 100% volunteer-driven, with Tilman as the main editor/chief wrangler. Pinging him as he may know more about any existing effort for cross-language distribution of the newsletter.--Dario (WMF) (talk) 15:05, 14 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Assassas77, we don't currently have plans to organize translations of the research newsletter. I would love to see this happen, but from my past experience some years ago with doing the same for the Wikimedia Foundation's (then) monthly activity reports, I think it is unrealistic to expect many translations for recurring publications of this length and complexity. Back then, we instead resorted to providing a shorter summary format optimized for translation (Wikimedia Highlights), which worked well for several years but required some extra effort that we couldn't currently afford for the research newsletter. If someone else would like to lead that, I would be happy to advise and support them.
On the French Wikipedia, RAW has IIRC often picked up select items from the research newsletter in the past, as a translated excerpt or in their own words. Regards, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 13:04, 18 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

research issue

edit
this https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Research:Committee&diff=18728434&oldid=15382915 - long ago... - why? is there an easily available explanation
with this - where the committee is mentioned at the lower portion of the thread - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(miscellaneous)#Research_project:_The_effects_of_specific_barnstars
IMHO - a comment from a wmf person explaining what happened, might be, may be, interesting for the discussion.
thanks and happy new year :JarrahTree (talk) 00:38, 2 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Its a pity, but the research proposal has sort of gone nowhere, and there has been no answer here, trust one is possible within the early new year stage, as it would really give discussions at the wp en end of things something to establish where things stand -re research of editors and editing. Thanks. Trust you are having a good new year. :JarrahTree (talk) 08:51, 6 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

@JarrahTree: Thanks for your note and for your interest in the (now defunct) Research Committee. While the committee ceased to operate a while ago (it was a volunteer body that ran for a few years) many of the initiatives we started back then ended up becoming official projects embraced by the movement or the Wikimedia Foundation. Just to mention two I am particularly fond of:
Regarding the barnstar research project, this is not an official project run by the Wikimedia Foundation, but an independent research project by academic researchers at CMU. The best way to inquire on the status of that project is to follow up (and ping the researchers) on the project's talk page. Copying @Halfak (WMF): who has been helping review the proposal. You can read more on the projects directly run by the Wikimedia Foundation's Research team at research.wikimedia.org and on our formal collaborations page. Hope this helps! --Dario (WMF) (talk) 00:43, 15 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for your response - the links and explanation are appreciated. The barnstar proposal has been withdrawn. :JarrahTree (talk) 06:01, 15 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
