Please consider uploading images to the Commons. where they will work in the future if your work is posted on some other WMF wiki. Regardless, there or here, you have to add a tag from Category:License templates to each image you upload, or it may be deleted as a copyright violation, as there is no information on the copyright status. Hi. The original table was published at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:The_Speed_of_Speedy_Deletions, Sub-section: Speedy deletions. The data is required to demonstrate:

  • Any decline/increase in the creation of new articles in the sample period
  • Any decline/increase in the deletion of new articles in the sample period
  • Deletion of new articles expressed as percentages of creations of new articles, by quarter year over the sample period
  • Data required: All columns in the original table 'Speedy deletions'
  • Sample period: August 2009 through August 2011
  • Sample users: ALL users in the period

Graphs required: For the sample period by quarter year, curves for:

  • New articles created
  • Total CSD deletions

The research at new page patroller workload providfed some interesting discussion that hlped towards identifying areas of concern, but somehow it got interpreted that patrolles are suffering from stress, overload, or burn-out, where nothing of that kind was reported or demonstrated by any research. A user from en.Wiki has prepared performance details on individual patrollers.

I unfortunately know nothing about the technical methods of extraction and extrapolation of data, so anything you, or the person who prepared the original table can do would be much appreciated, I don't need this overnight, but it would be good to be able to report at a meeting this week that something is underway.

Ahh! Sorry to give you the run-around, but that work was performed by Stuart Geiger (as listed on the page). He performed the analysis over the amount of time between page creation and speedy deletion nomination. I just looked at the number of patrolled pages as a proxy for the workload of individual page patrollers. I think that Steven mistakenly directed you to me because I happened to do a project with "Page patrol" in the title.
When you say that "[the research on page patroller workload] got interpreted that patrolles are suffering from stress [...]" do you mean that you got that from my write-up or discussions on the topic elsewhere? --EpochFail 14:42, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
That assumption came from the discussion at Research talk:Patroller work load, but I think it was already being suggested elsewhere. I'm not sure what the implications of my answer are. I think that it is important that people are able to submit their work even if it isn't in English. The Italian Wikipedia is not quite well

Hello, Aaron, I'm in serious need of some advice and I hope you can help. I'm getting increasingly alarmed by the statistics of the Italian Wikipedia:

Now, numbers always go up and down, but for many years it.wiki has been mostly over 2800-3000 active editors per month and April has been the 9th consecutive month with 2600 or less, something last happened in December 2007. Even number of edits, both registered and unregistered, has suddenly collapsed around July 2013. Page views seem stable and there is no obvious indicator of the source of the problem. For a while I've hoped this would only be temporary, but it seems to get worse.

I didn't compare numbers in detail but I don't see such a collapse on other top 10 Wikipedias. There are so many possible suspects, how can we identify the problem? I think swift corrective measures may be needed to avoid a disaster: it's probably the community's responsibility, but I and we have no idea where to start looking. At the cost of looking euro-centric and everything, this is the 7th biggest Wikipedia by traffic and active editors, it can't be ignored. --Nemo 13:54, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

I posted on your talk page first because I didn't have hypotheses to propose yet. :) I added to the page the ideas that I came up with so far, but they're all quite hard to translate to actual research/verifiable hypotheses. I want to do a very reasonable thing: recognize a name of some Wikipedia page from one language in another. For example, the query for en, milk, fr should return "lait", milk in french. Programmatic Quarry access

Hi EpochFail, I see at Research:Quarry#Downloading_a_resultset that you can download the latest data result from a query, but is there a way to programmatically execute the query? What I would like to do is to have a query automatically executed on some periodic basis (probably daily) and copy the data to a Wikipedia page. The programming side of reading and parsing json, then posting it to a Wikipedia page is easy, but the one thing I don't see is a way to execute the query without logging in interactively. What language(s) does the labs site support? I am expert-level in C++ and C#, I know enough php to get by on the rare occasion I have to use it, and know no python at all. My hope was to run it as a C# program from my own computer. I found a C# toolkit called DotNetWikiBot which makes it very simple to do the coding I want. But a possible alternative would be to use something hosted at wmflabs just to run the query and stage it somewhere and then do everything else I want to do in C#. The background is the plan to relaunch the main page of german Wikipedia. And before we start of into the blue, it would be good to know, how and how often our readers use the different elements and sections of the current main page.

Is there already a kind of user analysis in MediaWiki or Wikipedia, which goes beyond just counting pageviews? Is there something like Piwik.

  • If yes: How can we gain access to that? (I already own OTRS-Rights - if that's encessary).
  • If no: Is it possible to integrate something like this, without breaking WMF privacy rules?

I'm thinking that we could learn something about click-through rates from the mainpage using the Wikipedia clickstream dataset by correlating relevant pairs with the time at which certain pages were linked from the mainpage. That sounds feasible, EpochFail, the data is all there. You could even look at the pageview api for this data if you don't want to examine referrers and stuff like that. I still think that the discussions was closed inappropriately. I'm surprised that other meta admins/stewards would tolerate someone so actively involved in a discussion closing it on a major holiday without acknowledging that it had some support. I think I've made that clear and it has not been directly challenged or explained by the closing admin. I think your summary of that discussion was very questionable. I get this information on a monthly basis via https://tools.wmflabs.org/topviews/?project=uk.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&date=last-month&excludes= but was unable to find a list for all the year. ORES & Page Curation

EpochFail, I watched your hour-long video with great interest. Thank you so much for listening equally to my hour-long rant on Skype and bringing me rapidly up to date on ORES and its capabilities and limitations.

Whilst I welcome any form of AI that will help preserve what is now a seriously dwindling public respect for the quality of Wikipedia content, before deploying (or even developing) ORES for Page Curation, we need to establish why the patroller community is largely resistant to adopting the New Pages Feed and its Page Curation Tool as the default process for controlling new intake. The reasons are actually quite clear but on its own admission the Foundation no longer regards addressing them as a priority.

One important way to address this and significantly reduce the fire hose of trash is to educate new users the instant they register, on what they can and cannot insert in the Wikipedia. A proper welcome page has never been developed and a 2011 attempt by Brandon to create one (Article Creation Work Flow) as part of the Page Curation process was thwarted by internal events within the WMF. This was the other half of the Page Curation project which was begun by the Foundation in answer to the community's overwhelming demand for en:WP:ACTRIAL (which in face of an impenetrable backlog might now soon have to become become a reality).

AI is not a panacea - it should assist but not seek to replace the dysfunctional human aspect of the triage of new pages, or be a palliative for the improvement of the parts of the Curation GUI that the Foundation will not prioritise. New Page Patrolling is the only firewall against unwanted new pages, not only is it now a very serious critical issue, but it should be the Foundation's single top priority before anything else of any kind.
