OTRS
editHi GChriss. I am really sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I kept looking for you on IRC but didn't see you. I'm afraid we feel it's a bit to early to add you to OTRS. We would certainly consider you once you've got more experience though. Sorry to say no, and thanks again for volunteering. Regards -- sannse 19:34, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
Why are you so concerned with Penn's Wiki page if you do not attend the school? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.80.254.34 (talk • contribs) 13:10, 22 July 2006 (UTC).
- In here, I am a Wikimedian that happens to know a lot about school systems. Outside, I am a student that knows a lot about Wikipedia. Hope this helps, and sorry for the delay, GChriss 01:45, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Open Meetings
editHello GChriss. I see you are proposing Open Meetings as a new Wikimedia project, that's nice to see. I also see you've opposed the proposal for a Wikimedia project dedicated to travel -- what do you see as the significant differences? –SJ talk 00:39, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- Allo SJ.
- While I do think that travel can be (and often is!) educational in nature there is an inherent 'lifestyle' aspect involved which puts a damper on worldwide relevance. In contrast, the existing WMF sister projects are designed to be helpful across a wide range of educational contexts. "The traveller comes first" principle underscores this difference.
- I have concerns about the displacement of NPOV editing policies with "be fair" policies affecting overall perception of the WMF's work. I would like to see comparative discussions on the current travel proposal vs. services such as AirBnB, Foursquare and Yelp.
- I would like to see discussion on anticipated WMF costs in terms of staffing, legal support, and other resource allocations.
- Thanks for the comments. I see what you mean in the first point; a more universal project would provide information about places around the world, both for residents and for researchers and for visitors just passing through. That does sound like a much more useful and universal-value sort of project; also perhaps one that's compatible with what wikivoyage and city guides offers now.
- This last is a fair topic to consider and raise. Right now the marginal cost of starting a new project is quite small. No staff are devoted to any specific Project (though many people work primarily on Wikipedia, due to its relative size). I don't know of any thematic legal issues that would be an issue here. There are limited one-time and ongoing technical costs. The ongoing costs should be more than covered by fundraising that takes place on the project; both tend to be proportional to popularity. –SJ talk 06:14, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- I was thinking along the lines of 'hidden cost of gifts,' not necessarily specific monetary cost but time-investment costs arising from division-of-attention in supporting a new project. GChriss (talk) 12:35, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- I would like to see discussion on anticipated WMF costs in terms of staffing, legal support, and other resource allocations.
- It's a neat proposal. I'm more than happy to review others' thoughts on the above and add my support if appropriate.
- The first two points aren't applicable to OpenMeetings.org, and the last one strikes me as suddenly important to spell out in a new section. Sincerely, GChriss (talk) 01:57, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hey Ghriss. I was in South American a while ago cycling with a Brazilian friend who had never been in an airplane (issues of cost). I joined him in Beaunos Aires and we pedaled to Bariloche (a little over a 1000km). One day we passed a couple hitch hikers. The gentleman in the couple had been traveling around South American continually for more than 10 years working odd jobs and selling crafts where ever they went. He was far from having wealth of any kind with his only possessions being those he could carry.
- I myself have hitched thousands of kilometers just to see the world in my younger days. Travel is not the privilege of the rich but rather the desire of the adventurous. The Australian Aborigines have the Walkabout.
- With respect to costs. I am not sure. It would be great if the foundations could give us an estimate.Doc James (talk · contribs · email)
- This is a fair point; in an abstract sense, travel is part of the shared human experience. At the same time, though, the people described are among the least likely to use or contribute to a travel wiki.
- I would be supportive of a proposal that made the transition of "here's how you go" to "this is the experience." GChriss (talk) 02:49, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- Agree that that would be a useful addition. There is also discussion regarding combining in city guides. Something another Wikimedian is working on. These would be directed towards people staying for prolonged periods (both locals and foreigners) travel around a city. Will be discussed tomorrow. Journal hosting sister project proposal
editHello, I'm leaving a note on the talkpages of those on the old SPCom list to ensure that you have seen this proposal discussion for a journal hosting sister project. I realise that the process these days is slightly different, but I'm keen to make sure that we get as broad feedback as possible, so please consider to adding a note to comment/support/oppose. We hope to submit a cover letter to the WMF trustees in the coming month. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 03:40, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
