Re:Sitenotice

edit

I saw your post on Angela's talk page. If by mediawiki-wide you mean Wikimedia-wide, then of course you may put something up related only to your local wiki on your local sitenotice, just edit your local MediaWiki sitenotice page. Cbrown1023 talk 18:50, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cbrown. I think by Sidebar, you mean the "Sitenotice" feature. You are correct about my typo: I meant Wikimedia-wide site notices. And still you have not answered my question. Is there a policy or guideline addressing this?Huji 19:17, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah yes, I do mean that (and I have corrected it in my original post). There is no policy addressing that you may do it, but there also isn't one that says you cannot. The sitenotice is used for whatever the local wiki wants, or else the local users (admins) would not be able to edit it. So yes, you may change it and no I do not believe there is a policy or guideline for this. Cbrown1023 talk 20:52, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Your dumps

edit

Hi there. Although Wikipedia is a good source of information, it is misused by spammers who add links to their own sites. I regularly check the download.wikimedia.org repository and download the latest dumps, I upload them into my own MySQL program, and execute several queries. One query returns the list of the most linked sites. While you can expect sites like fa.wikipedia.org to have a lot of links (the external links dump Wikipedia generates consider wikipedia own links as external links, that is why they are listed there), if you notice a strange foreign link that has a high rate (in example, a Russian or a Chinese site), it may indicate an attempt of spam. Also, it allows you to keep watch on sites that should not be really linked, like photobucket, imageshak, flickr, rapidshare, etc.

A second query returns the list of articles with the most external links. An article with 10 or 15 external links appears to be correct, however an article with 100 or more external links becomes suspicious. Spammers tend to add links to pages with already too many links, where they can defend the insertion with statements like "but X is already there, why not my link" or "there are over 100 links now, adding another won't damage the article". In articles about cities, in example, it is common to list local radios, newspapers, parks, etc. Sometimes, people create a table with the name of the place plus an external link to the site. However, it is always preferred to link to an open directory (a site specially designed to hold external links based on a criteria), or to create an article about the radio or newspaper, and add the external link there. Also, sometimes people don't know about the references tag (Cite/Cite.php), so they add the same external links several times through the article as reference, in these cases they should be replaced with a single reference used multiple times.

These two lists are community focused: since I don't know which links are preferred in each community, I create the dumps and let them check and make their own conclusions. A site may not be useful in a Wikipedia, but may be pretty useful for another.

Finally, I execute two queries aimed at finding spambot pages. Some spambots are bugged, and create pages ending with / (in example, Test/ instead of Test) or send a wrong query to create the page, creating titles like W/index.php or W/w/index.php, or even /wiki/Forum. I generate two lists, one of very probable spambot pages that include index.php and /wiki/ in their title, and another of probable spambot pages that end with slash. These pages should be manually checked to see whether they have valid content or not, and if not, tagged for speedy deletion. In your case, I found fa:User:ReyBrujo/Dumps/20070427#Very probable spambot pages, I found this page that is created but has no content (note that I usually wikilink the articles, but if it fails, I also add the article id to manually find it). In this case, it is not a spambot page (it was created by a valid user), but has a wrong format and should be deleted. Some wikis have a higher chance of getting these pages (in example, the english one has a lot of them every month). Most of the time I review the pages myself and tag them for deletion, but I have little time lately to do that.

The dumps are aimed at spamming. I generate them for every Wikipedia (User:ReyBrujo/Dump statistics), along with stats like page count, external link count, variation between dumps, list interesting cases (like the spammer who added external links to stub templates to effectively spread them into thousands of articles) and list some tasks I find (like external links that are dead and should be removed from pages, point spam pages I cannot tag for deletion, etc). As I said, the lists are aimed at the communities, and if I don't report them is because I sometimes have a hard time finding a community place to advertise (that is why I am lately pointing to my meta file instead). If they are not needed (I create dumps even for very small wikipedias that may have no problems), just tell me and I will remove it from my list until they are needed. No big problem with me, while in the beginning I did everything by hand, nowadays I run several scripts that do all the processing for me, so I won't be offended :-)

Hope this clarifies the dump purposes. There is no fixed schedule, I just generate them whenever a new dump is uploaded (sometimes I get backlogged and generate two or three dump processings at once), which is usually once every 2 months for the English, one every month for every big (Spanish, German, Russian, Japanese, Finnish, etc) one, and between 2 and 3 times per month for the smallest ones. -- ReyBrujo 18:43, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Arabic arbcom

edit

Hi Huji, a few days ago you added the Arabic Wikipedia arbcom to Arbitration Committee. Is it active and running, or is it still being tested out to make sure arwiki needs it/thinks it is the best solution? I wouldn't want that page to mistakenly list it as active if it is not yet, and since it has only been around since February and has less than a dozen edits I want to make sure. Picaroon (Talk) 18:59, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well I thought it was as active as a newborn ;) but I will check this out and let you know. Huji 19:16, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes. it is active and ready..as you know the Arabic Wikipedia currently don't have the same number of active contributors of the English Wikipedia..so the possibility of using it everyday is low compared to the English one. Aren't a dozen edits also mean that there aren't problems currently?..don't worry, if it isn't functioning, I will de-list it myself. Salam.--The Joke النكتة‎ 19:57, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Could you specify where it could be requested ? Because it may be subject to change later, Since there is inconsistency among dialects, Some refer it as Tapuri, some gileki, some mazaniki, some mazeruni, some mazeni, But in present time i am sure that it must not be مَزِرونی,, I prefer to be مازرونی. Please try your best and i am awaiting for the results. --Ali 15:33, 26 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Persian translation

edit

Hi, I remember you had an access to some statistical data of Persian Wikipedia. Could you help me understand some confusing data:

According to fa:ویژه:Statistics Persian Wikipedia have 94,790 registered user Now

If you summarize numbers of New Wikipedians in this chart you will see the number of Wikipedians must be 1,505 (until Feb'08) Norwegian Wikipedia is in deferent situation 3,789 Now Registere Users and 4,638 SUM of New Wikipedians (until Feb'08). Is there any possible mistake in source code? (like using a persian number character as a Number), or any kind of trolling? Please if you fined out the answer leave a message in my Persian user page

Regards. --Mmehdi.g 02:44, 30 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello. There are more than 90,000 registered accounts on Persian Wikipedia (from the first day till now). 1,505 accounts were created in February 2008; that is 1,505 out of 90,000. So what you said is wrong: it is not that 1,505 accounts were created until February 2008; it is that 1,505 accounts were created in February 2005 (not January, not March, only February). Huji 19:21, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is 2 different column in fa stats chart (Total:A, New:B) you should see. I summarize both in excel

Sum(A:A)=21254
Sum(B:B)=1505

Where is 94,790 ? --Mmehdi.g 19:47, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh! I totally misunderstood your question, and the statistics! Here is the answer: The number 1505, is the count of "Wikipedians" not users; it seems that Wikipedians are defined as user with at least 10 edits from the date of account creation. Hope this answers your question. Huji 14:39, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I read that on top of other pages of stata.wikipedia.org after this discussion. I gathered some stats analysis about users and admins of persian wikipedia in this page. I will be happy if you could join us after your wikibreak. Mmehdi.g 10:54, 4 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Huji, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List_of_administrators and the Template:List of administrators.
