It is still strange to me to think that I lived most of my life in the last century (I turned 63 in 2000).

Talking about my life to younger people I often forget that to them things I lived through are history.

The twenty odd years is still the beginning of a new century to me while to young adults it is the only time they know.

I am part of the Good World Movement This name refers to the informal world-wide network of people who choose to participate in unfolding a progressively better world.

In this project I investigate the different ways our capacity for knowledge is used in the quest for understanding reality.

Holistics (a neologism making the adjective, Holistic into a noun) https://goodworld.lightnet.co.uk/holistic.htm#Holistics Dealing with wholes requires specific methodologies.

The kinds of methods required emerge from the qualities natural to whole systems. General Systems Theory and the Systems Sciences mark humans' developing ability to study phenomena in a holistic way.

A holistic philosophy requires a holistic theory of knowledge--a new epistemology:

A theorem of holistic knowledge: Any subject is a composite of all other subjects.

Topic 1 Economic Literacy

edit

This is economics for everyone

Economics is simple in principle.

Furthermore, in general, everything is simple in principle.

If we want to understand society, we need to start with economics (the simplest of the social sciences according to Henry George)

Proposition 1: The labour market is the modern version of the slave market (we volunteer to sell our time and and energy in return for money to buy the bare necessities of food, clothing, shelter).

The employment system is a low-level asocial control system complemented by Job Centres for the unemployed and overseen by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)

What is centralised state education doing to new generations?

Harm... In serious ways. It crowds out the learning of independent creative thought. A relatively few individuals escape the stultifying effects of regimented education but the majority leave school defenceless against a cultural atmosphere best described as 'post-truth.

Why is this allowed to continue in spite to all the critical expositions by educational thinkers?

Adler proposed that specialized vocational or preprofessional training be given only after students had completed a full course of basic education in the humanities, arts, sciences, and language. There is a pressing need to understand why religious beliefs can give rise to serious conflict in spite of the doctrine of love at the base all faiths.

The mysterious urge to create/communicate is one of the most deeprooted of human instincts. It is a great social loss that art has been restricted to be the preserve of artists.

Applying holistic thought

edit

Philosophers and scientists have recognised the need for this approach. The study of whole systems has been developing during the second half of the 20th century under such headings as general systems theory and systems sciences. Interdisciplinary research, cybernetics, operations research, systems analysis, are all disciplines engaged in understanding problems in a holistic way.

Not an easy task: ...everything in the universe is connected to everything else... and if each relation helps to determine the nature of the thing that is related, then everything is what it is because everything else is what it is. This is perhaps rather confusing, and sounds metaphysical. But the resulting thought is important: the totality of what exists is an integrated system, and anything split off from the totality and considered separately is incomplete. In practice, we have to split things off and consider them separately, but we shall have to be extremely careful how we do it.

We cannot bring everything into consideration and somehow must determine the boundaries of the problem in hand. Again, in practice, the scientist needs to enlarge the scope of her study in every dimension until the factors she is bringing in seem to make no tangible difference to the answers she is getting. At the very least, this process is going to take her outside the apparent problem area by one step in every direction. (Stafford Beer, Decision and Control, 1996)

Homage to a visionary?

edit

It vas "love at first sight" in the early 2000s between me and Wikipedia (Wikiverse, actually).

Decades before this encounter, I have been reading the books of Teilhard de Chardin. The captivating vision of a future Earth surrounded by a Noosphere, generated by the collective thinking of humankind, was a primer for the above encounter.

De Chardin was the visionary who saw the internet decades before anyone had thought about it. Janosabel (talk) 14:08, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
