I like your picture Wikimedia-servers-2004-02-19-800wide.png! However, the criss-crossing arrows get confusing in a hurry. How about moving the database server(s) below the Apache webservers - then they wouldn't criss-cross so much! -- Dwheeler 03:38, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Wow. That was fast. Thanks!

Re: IzyNews
editDear Jeronim,
I have just read on nl:Wikipedia:De_kroeg that you have executed an IP-level block against the IzyNews system. As the owner of the system, please allow me a few comments.
First of all, we strive to comply with all licensing requirements and other regulations that Wikipedia may have. We are always willing to listen and act on any of your comments.
Secondly, there has been the mis-perception that IzyNews would fetch Wikipedia pages in real time, which is not the case. Technically speaking, IzyNews is a caching proxy which retrieves article content no more than once per 14 days. You can easily prove that for yourself by looking at pages like
Each of these and all others are generated from the dynamic cache and the Wikipedia servers are not contacted at all. All pages are marked with references to GNU FDL and Wikipedia and the timestamp of the last update is clearly visible at the the bottom of every page.
The current cache hit rate is 94% and we expect this to go up further as the cache fills up more. The logs and numbers clearly indicate that the dynamic caching algorithm actually _saves_ bandwidth compared to repeated, scheduled downloads of complete database dumps; the simple reason being that a high percentage of less popular pages are never called upon and therefore are never loaded.
Last, but not least: It was never intended to mirror pages from the User:, Talk:, Special: and other namespaces without article content. All respective hyperlinks are changed to be redirected to the Wikipedia systems.
- It is true, however, that it was possible to trick the logic by typing URLs directly into the browser. I apologize for this oversight which has now been corrected.
Given this information, may I please ask to reconsider your previous assessment and to eventually release the block on our IP address 62.75.174.182
Thank you for your friendly consideration,
- Best Regards,
- Ulrich Schwanitz

- I admire your concern for conserving Wikimedia's resources. Would you be so kind as to donate a portion of your advertising revenue to Wikimedia, so as to compensate for the burden you place on its sites? -- Jeronim 21:46, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
- If this is true I see no reason to block IzyNews. I have done a test and it looks that there articles are not updated live. What I do not like is that there is no contact-info on there site to contact IzyNews. If it where there I whould have send you first a email befor to ask for a block. --Walter 16:20, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
Slovene Wikipedia
editAs you're one of the developers I'm turning to you with request to translate some on MediaWiki software, used on :sl. As of now we're still using english command for categories, but we wish to use slovene version (Kategorija instead of Category); some of associated commands were already translated, but this wasn't. Another translation is of Template to Predloga. Regards, --Klemen Kocjancic 10:51, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
...is mildy alive. I've left a message on your en: page, but as your userpage redirects here I figured I'd best post a heads-up about my heads-up here :). Take care, --Blackcap | talk 01:26, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
At Wikipedia:Village pump somebody asked what article was viewed the most. I have decided to do a little research and came across the aforementioned page. I was wondering if you could share the lastest stats and if possible, describe how you came up with the list. Thanks. Robert Harrison 04:56, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- That list was made from the webalizer stats which have not been generated for many months now, so unfortunately I can't help you. -- Jeronim 13:17, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
