Translator, We need you!

edit

Dear Julian Mendez,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

Translate some names for hundreds software projects including MediaWiki

edit

Hello, I'm writing you because you subscribed to a Language support team. As you know, Wikimedia projects exist in almost 300 languages; supporting them all is a big effort so we partner with other organisations. One small but visible thing we miss is that many interwiki links in sidebar (among others) don't offer a translation of the language name when hovered. We're now able to translate 100 more language names in your language.

If you're interested, I can create you an account to submit translations on the CLDR web tool (within June 14): please send an email to ask one and I'll follow up with instructions. On CLDR you can translate and tweak many other things, if you desire; your work will impact hundreds of software projects. Thanks, Nemo 17:58, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dear Julian Mendez, since you are an administrator on a wiki from which no user participated in this discussion, I'd like to make sure you are aware of some recent events which may alter what the Wikimedia Foundation lets you do on your wiki: Superprotect.

Interlingua Wikipedia - Nederlandia

edit

Hello user:Julian Mendez, cc user:Bernd Muller,

I contact you, because you are - in my opinion - the best active admin that the Interlingua Wikipedia has and you have been deleting a page, an action only admins can revert.

The name Nederlandia has been used in several instances and by several users when writing in Interlingua.

Maybe it was 2016-05-03 that Bernd found the latest edit(s). And he undid a copy-paste move. [1]

Later Julian Mendez deleted ia:Nederlandia. This action broke several links, might constitute a copyright violation as sources for ia:Pais Basse are now missing, and might be an abuse of admin rights, since at least in cases of editorial conflict with other users, admins shall discuss first. Admin rights have to be used in the intention of the Wikimedia Foundation and the editors of the particular project.

2016-05-15 18:50 Julian Mendez wrote: "Io nunquam trovava Nederlandia pro Nederland, illo es le nomine in latino sed non in interlingua. Si alicuno trova un fonte confidente de su uso in interlingua, io addera le redirection." [2]

Whether Julian Mendez personally found "Nederlandia" in use is irrelevant as long as others found it in use. The source is relevant, not the viewer.

Julian, given all these facts, it seems the most neutral way to handle this issue is to undelete Nederlandia and undo the copy-paste move of 2004-10-01. Maybe you could merge the page histories, if there is not that much overlap, i.e. synchronous existence. And maybe post an apology to Bernd Muller, since you accused him of emptying a page, a claim for a fact that cannot be found in the edit history.

During the next Interlingua meeting in Berlin, we will certainly discuss this matter. There is opposition to the way Interlingua Wikipedia is run, false allegations, now recently even blocks, and content removal on the Taverna page. I write that all in English, because newcomers to Interlingua and Wikimedia admins shall be able to read it too.

The help of UMI and especially of you would be much appreciated. 91.9.121.52 15:17, 13 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Interlingua Wikipedia - 2016 major help request

edit

Julian Mendez,

IP91.xxx, user:Jondel, user:Gehling, user:Bernd Muller, user:FritzVonHomburg and user:Julian Mendez did work on improving the Interlingua Wikipedia, created new article pages, polished the infrastructure.

New infrastructure and polishing of the old includes

  • the infobox/ ... templates that display data from Wikidata - they are actively used not only by these users but even by users that don't have their home in iawiki
  • aligning names of articles about taxons with the names in frwiki, eswiki, itwiki by using scientific taxon names
  • addition of hundreds of images via Wikidata - image addition explicitely suggested at ia:Wikipedia:Expansion
  • the autopagina-pages for taxons - have been agreed upon with you, displaying data from Wikidata
  • clear separation of namespaces
    • all lists moved to annex-namespace
    • all galleries moved to annex-namespace
    • categories separated by namespace
  • user language templates reprogrammed by using a centralized set of ca. 3 templates
  • dozens of new user languages enabled by using the new centralized set
  • some of the lists now automatically maintained by ListeriaBot - this feature is used to check for labels in Wikidata and missing articles in iawiki
  • autocategorization based on data in Wikidata, with prefix "Wikidata:" - this feature is used to detect Q<number> labels, that need translation, and labels that were in upper case in Wikidata that need lower case
  • deletion of unpopulated and underpopulated categories - so that the real categories can be seen more easily
  • deletion of unused templates
  • removing of stub templates - as they make the pages ugly in the eye of a reader and add no value - nobody enlarged the pages for months and that they are short can be detected by software or the reader himself.
  • use of singular to align category name and article name with the item name in Wikidata

On 2016-06-07 at 16:48 UTC a user inactive for 1 year and 10 month, having only 3 actions in 2 years, edits own user page. The first edit is a removal of two external links [3] from own user page. The second edit is a re-insertion of a deprecated template on own user page. The re-insertion of the deprecated template has been reverted.

On 2016-06-08 at 13:38 UTC the user with zero contributions in 2016 so far, zero in 2015, six in 2014 starts a war. The removal of the deprecated template is reverted, 13:54 the IP is accused of being a bot. At 14:42 the IP opposes this ad hominem attack and asks for blocking the admin. At 15:42 the admin blocks the IP instead, which is clearly an abusive use of admin rights. As suggested by the block message, the IP creates a section named "Blocada 1134" to refer to that block. The blocker creates a new section named "Blocation" instead and making several allegations. IP properly merges the two sections and questions the allegations, including asking for evidence for some of them. Blocker removes right to edit own talk page.

After that the admin is editing Interlingua Wikipedia in a controversial manner

  • removing infobox from article [4]
  • inserting deprecated template [5]
  • removing talk from Project chat (Taverna) [6]
  • removing deletion request from unused page [7] [8] ...

The admin rights for that user should be thoroughly reviewed. According to Admin activity review an admin is considered inactive if zero edits and log actions have been performed in a 2 year period.

Almafeta does not fall under that rule, since in the two year period there were

  • 1x edit on user talk 2014-07-30
  • 2x log actions 2014-07-28
    • 16:01, 28 julio 2014 Almafeta (Discussion | contributiones) deleva le pagina Discussion Patrono:Capitales de Europa (contento esseva: '{{delete|x wiki spam}} Прекрасное оповещение Сейчас же надо не зыбыть записать эту весточку.')
    • 16:00, 28 julio 2014 Almafeta (Discussion | contributiones) deleva le pagina Caractersticas de los insectos (contento esseva: '{{Eliminar|solmente nonsenso}} El pito de chucho esta blando??')

Given that the period of inactivity was 1 year, 10 months and some days, and that only three actions have been made within the 2 year period, the current use of admin rights in such highly controversial manner might be enough to ask for revocation.

Please intervene.

  • unblock the IP
  • ask Almafeta 1) to properly provide evidence for the allegations that have been made 2) to cease activities like infobox removal, insertion of deprecated templates, removal of deletion from unused pages. 3) to restore talk that the user has been removed from project chat (Taverna).

After that there should be a major discussion of how to proceed with that Wikipedia. Following the recent road to more automatization, a more scientific approach and using Wikidata or reverting to the old state with dozens of templates cluttered all over the articles, and no strict separation of namespaces. 91.9.121.52 17:26, 13 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
