editHi, the account above seems to be a personal one so a fellow steward already unlocked it. Please be more careful in closing in-office accounts, have a nice day! --Vituzzu (talk) 22:48, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi, I'm sorry but the off-boarding documentation for Leslie Carr's departure indicates that both 'LeslieCarr (WMF)' and 'LeslieCarr' are to be blocked as these are both non-personal accounts. But thank you for catching that so quickly. --JTrias (WMF) (talk) 22:55, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm the one who asked for the account to be unlocked, because I saw her enwiki userpage said "I work here and make servers run. This is my personal account and all edits and opinions here are my own. My staff account is User:LeslieCarr (WMF)". I should have assumed that you knew what you were doing, but even Jon Harald Søby's account was once locked (or as you say, "off-boarded") incorrectly. I'm sure the documentation is correct. I guess this is my fault for the misunderstanding, sorry, PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:01, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
- Actually here I see This is my personal account which is clearly confirmed by edits. Honestly I don't see any need to re-lock so quickly but I won't revert you before asking Philippe. --Vituzzu (talk) 23:02, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
- edit conflict I'm sorry but you are mistaken in your actions. I do not know what off-wiki documentation you refer to but it is irrelevant, the user clearly states this is their personal account and you can review Special:Contributions/LeslieCarr and see how these are normal contributions done in their personal capacity. That's the whole point of having two accounts. I am about to email Philippe, as this is not the first time that WMF staffers have locked personal accounts because of mistakes in their documentation. I have re-unblocked the account as the user should have the ability to edit while you sort the documentation out, I ask you to refrain from re-locking. Snowolf How can I help? 23:05, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
- I've contacted Leslie's manager to confirm. You all make a valid point. I will wait on his response and make sure to unlock as necessary. Thank you all.--JTrias (WMF) (talk) 23:09, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
- Can you please explain why you have done this again, with Special:CentralAuth/Rdunican? I will be unlocking the account shortly. --Rschen7754 21:44, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- This is for off-boarding purposes. The user Rdunican no longer works for the Foundation. Please keep it locked. Thank you. --JTrias (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- Do you not remember what happened in January with the other account? --Rschen7754 21:50, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- Rschen, I'm having trouble figuring out why you think this is a personal account? It has standard work disclaimer language, matches the naming conventions, has work related edits, and (as I understand it) was on his HR off-boarding sheet. What am I missing here? - When I looked at the account, I noticed that another related account was locked at the same time, and on this particular account I noticed no (WMF) suffix, and some mainspace editing. I also noticed the disclaimer, which led me to think that it was a personal account, as that statement describes personal editing. Had I looked at the (Public Policy) account more closely, I probably would not have come to the same conclusion. Noticing the thread above also led me to think this was a similar incident as happened in January with another departing employee, and I unlocked the account as had been done at that time as well.
- I think there is definitely room for improvement in terms of the process, as well as related communication.
- Finally, with that all being said, there clearly was room for improvement in the time (rather, lack thereof) that I took to look into the situation, and in the manner I chose to address it, and for that I sincerely apologize to everyone, including Julie. --Rschen7754 22:36, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for zealously defending our users, Rschen. --JTrias (WMF) (talk) 22:48, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Wiki for account creation
editHi, please stop creating new global accounts on the English Wikipedia. Not only it's rather useless because staff shouldn't create user pages on en.wiki first anyway; but it's also quite unpractical because until they log in users won't have a user talk or emailable account on Meta-Wiki. --Nemo 10:33, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
- Nemo bis, she does that because that's the current process, and with good reason: we went through a period when accounts were being created on meta without first being checked for naming collisions throughout the cluster. The single place most likely to find collisions is the wiki with the largest number of users: English Wikipedia. By creating there, the thinking was, we minimize the chance for collisions. With the rollout of SUL, it may make more sense to rethink that process, I agree. Give us a little bit of time to work on that, please. Changing processes, while it sounds easy, actually is a bit of work, particularly when you need to document the new one, train it to everyone who does it, etc. Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 11:34, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
