Hello, MBrar (WMF). Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Happy editing!

…can't find you on this list of Wikimedia Foundation staff and contractors… odder (talk) 20:20, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Manprit Brar, Legal intern. See the wmf account, John F. Lewis (talk) 20:38, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, @John F. Lewis. odder (talk) 20:49, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just confirming what John said, Manprit is an intern in the legal department (was about to go find out why the staff page was out of date but it looks like she's already on there). Jalexander--WMF 18:50, 20 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your kind words on the trademark discussion, I vaguely recall from around the time I registered Wikinewsie.org that some surprise was expressed when it was confirmed Wikinews was already a registered mark. I'd suspect the same may not be the case for some of the variants in other languages — we are talking about the registration being back when the WMF was 'relatively poor'. :)

I assume the logo discussion over on Wikinews will feed into improving the strength of mark registration by formalising the design of the text component. Over on English Wikinews we stress that the logo is a registered mark, but without making that page overly-long it would be good to add a WMF-sanctioned suggested/acceptable fair use of the logo when linking to published articles.

We've a vaguely related issue when it comes to the English Wikinews Facebook page. It is community maintained, and we're being prompted with the following:

Is Your Page about Wikinews?

It looks like you've created a Page about Wikinews. Mark your Page as a Community Page about Wikinews so that people know what it's about. If you are the official representative of this person or organization, you can request verification from Facebook.

I've asked Erika, the Managing Director of Facebook Europe, how we should handle this, but input from the WMF would be useful too. Wikinews, like all of the projects, is "the Community". This makes both the options presented: "This is a Community Page about Wikinews", or "I am the official representative of Wikinews", somewhat inaccurate. Any ideas? --Brian McNeil / talk 10:32, 24 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Brian! Thank you for your message :) My sincerest apologies for my delay in responding. We don’t typically edit community policies like this, but you are free to refer readers to Section 3.6 of the new WMF trademark policy draft on the Wikinews page. It explains how to appropriately use Wikimedia marks to link back to Wikimedia sites like Wikinews. Linking to the policy will keep the page from getting too long and will show your readers your policy coincides with WMF’s. As for your issue with the English Wikinews Facebook page, what would be the significance of obtaining verification from Facebook about being the official representative of Wikinews? Sorry, I am not very familiar with the use of Facebook.MBrar (WMF) (talk) 00:29, 8 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
