Thanks yourself, I think we have a pretty good group of people and at the same time beginning to get a good cross-section of users. I would like to see at least one member from each project - Nathan Carter (Talk) 22:02, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

your comment on site feedback

Could you please in what point do you think your argument on Wikimedia_site_feedback/main#Feedback_that_belongs_elsewhere is relevant to the Foundation wiki? As you know it is not the page for general discussion on the Foundation (external people might think so though), and those images you listed there are not found on the foundation wiki as far as I remember. Re: wikt:vi:MediaWiki:Welcomecreation

edit

Thanks. (It's synchronized with the Vietnamese Wikipedia, where we tend to customize messages as soon as they're made customizable.) Actually, although the Vietnamese Wiktionary has orders of magnitude more entries than the Vietnamese Wikipedia, it's the other way around in terms of popularity (and number of users). vi:wikt: imported around 200,000 entries from a free-content dictionary project (the Free Vietnamese Dictionary Project), which is why it's so big. FVDP is basically the standard Vietnamese online translation dictionary. Now that we've imported all those entries, we've had to slow down and work on correcting thousands of formatting and substantive errors, as well as translating the interface further.

At the Vietnamese Wikipedia, we made the conscious decision not to create articles by bot for the time being, because the 366 date stubs and 60 sexagenary cycle stubs we created didn't really get anywhere. Bots have a hard time writing half-decent encyclopedia articles, but for importing dictionaries, they're pretty good. wikt:vi: also includes a good number of geographical entries that didn't meet the notability test at Wikipedia, since w:vi: generally doesn't accept articles on xã (villages), làng (hamlets), and quận (districts). Newcomers usually write about their hamlet when they first join Wikipedia, though. Since they have names, wikt:vi: accepts them.

Interestingly, through a cursory glance at the wikt:vi: user list, it seems that most wikt:vi: users aren't w:vi: users. That's why I actually advertise Wikipedia when welcoming new users. (We welcome new users manually, because there are only a few new users per day, so for now it's manageable.)

I'm glad you're spearheading an attempt at welcomingness/friendliness/usability. It's been forever since someone did a comparison on each of the Wikimedia projects. Way back when, someone took screenshots of every Wikipedias' front page. We should do an update on that, since many of the mid-size projects still lack a convincing front page (or it's unwieldy).

Yep, one of our users thought that we needed to make the level 2 headings (which divide the entries by language) stand out more, so we gave them a golden/orange background. We also have the search bar focused by default, since dictionary users like to hop around, and the Ctrl+F hotkey is a bit obscure.

The six options in the sidebar control the Vietnamese IME. The Vietnamese Wikipedia was (I think) the first to enable an IME by default, since major Vietnamese-language sites are expected to provide one. Everyone has their favorite way to enter accent marks, so a w:vi: user developed a rather complex script to handle them all. I might write up a Signpost article about w:vi: sometime. Let me discuss it at the Vietnamese village pump and see if anyone has something they'd like to share.

More ideas for future comparisons (because I don't have time to do them myself):

  • MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning or MediaWiki:Edittools, depending on where the wiki puts its copyright warning, since this is a prime place to guide users when they make their first edit. What's expected of them? Is the warning focused on the harm that an edit could do to the project, or is it focused on where the user can find help?
  • MediaWiki:Noarticletext and MediaWiki:Newarticletext. Some wikis have a dizzying array of links, and some have oodles of interwiki links (which are convenient for powerusers, I suppose). But do the messages make Special:Search easy to reach? This is a good place to cut down on test edits by directing users to the Sandbox, as well as "Where can I find out about..." pages by pointing out the Reference desk. A place to request new articles helps too.
  • MediaWiki:Searchnoresults. If no results are found, what options are given? Is it a "please hang up and dial again"-type message, or are there links to (for instance) general search engines?
  • MediaWiki:Uploadtext. In addition to the standard warnings against copyright violation, is there a note about perhaps uploding to the Commons? Does it have some explanation of what the various license options mean? Is MediaWiki:Licenses customized, so that the user actually gets a licensing menu? (Expecting the non-poweruser to type out a cryptic code like {{PD-USGov-Interior-USGS}} is just asking for trouble.)

Some of these ideas require more understanding of the native language than the welcome template comparison, since that was mainly about design. But people are proud of their wikis, so if we can contact everyone at Wikimedia Embassy (a huge undertaking in itself), we can get people to show off what they've done, as I kind of did for the Vietnamese projects. :^)

Wow, I really like that French Wikipedia upload message. That fortunately is a message that we can afford to (and should) make somewhat long, to guide users through all the things they need to know before committing an image. Knowing that your image is unacceptable beforehand saves you the grief of having the startling Commons:Template:Copyvio slapped on your image. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 06:40, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Philip Greenspun illustration project

edit

Just interested in the Philip Greenspun illustration project, but need a training for that... Where can i find more information about the project, and the possibilities to be involved in? Greatings. Guérin Nicolas 13:31, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

(copied from users talk page)
Hello! Sorry I missed replying to your message earlier.
All the main info about the project will be on Meta. There is a French translation at Le projet illustratif de Philip Greenspun. At the moment we are collecting request nominations and working on SVG standards and recommendations. Hopefully out of that will grow some basic tutorials. There will be announcements when the round 1 starts and people can pick images to do. I will try and remember to let you know when that happens. :)
Is there anything else specific you wanted to ask about?

PGIP/illustration tutorials

edit

Hi Timeshifter,

I was wondering if you are interested in working more on standardising and collecting the various illiustration(map, graph etc) tutorials. I know you've found lots all over the place as have I, so it would be good if we had a concerted effort to have them all in one place (Commons) and identify gaps, and also look at which tutorials exist or don't in various other languages.

What do you think? Write me an email or drop me a note on my talk page. cheers, pfctdayelise 07:22, 8 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I categorize and list some of the graphics stuff that I find in various places. I list or categorize it on wikipedia, the commons, meta, etc.. I mainly only work on what I am interested in myself at the moment, so I am not really much use for concerted efforts. I would like to see en:Category:Wikipedia image help better organized, though I may not be the one to do it. There is probably a lot of how-to stuff elsewhere on the web that could be linked to also. I think the following two request points for image help could act as good places for getting the help needed to organize, categorize, and link it all up:
Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Images to improve
Philip Greenspun illustration project/Requests
People who come to those places are already motivated to do something. Some are in need of help, and some are offering skills. So if they can all be pointed to what they want on various graphics topics, they may return the favor in dropping some how-to paragraphs, or in categorizing or linking to some info they have found. I learned some things in both places, and have been returning the favor. --Timeshifter 10:59, 8 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me, are you a steward? I'm from es.wikisource and the wikisource is in the middle of an emergency. There's an user damaging (I think that's the correct word) pages and there isn't any administrator to block him, can you do something? PD: Sorry about my english.

Hi Pfctdayelise, in case of emergencies where You can't help, You could consider sending the person requesting help to #wikimedia-stewardsconnect, there most of the time stewards can be reached. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 13:54, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

v:Educational Media Awareness Campaign

edit

Hi and thanks for your message and kind words about my media project. I originally created the project at http://www.qedoc.org/en/index.php?title=Educational_Media_Awareness_Campaign (see also main page, where it is transcluded) - I did this last winter, and dual-released it on Wikiversity as well with dual licencing. Its current status is "ongoing but having a rest"! Currently it has 100 images, which is enough for its current purposes. On the other hand, certain common school subjects have too few images - especially English and Mathematics. If people at Mediawiki Commons are interested in mirroring or in developing/maintaining the project, they are very welcome. The schemes page you showed me is useful - there are a number of good images there which I hadn't seen before. However one must be careful not to put excessive emphasis on technology and biology - those subjects seem to attract the best images anyway, and the idea is to maintain a balance among subjects. If you'd like to talk about the project, you can find me on Wikiversity IRC. --McCormack 04:19, 4 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Brianna.

I made an illustration for this topic already half a year ago.
Maybe we should replace this with another request? Lycaon 06:39, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

If possible, I'd like to see it replaced with an other related request (biology, invertebrate anatomy). Thanks for looking into this. Lycaon 08:58, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Skip it. Accuracy is not a consideration.
