Hello, Polygnotus. Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum if you need help with something (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Also worthwhile acquainting yourself with the functions of global user pages. Happy editing!

Meta:Civility

edit

Hi Polygnotus, you've made your point at Talk:Community Wishlist, please keep your criticism on the subject matter without getting personal. Insinuating that someone's company culture is toxic, that they might feel pressure from their bosses, can't deal with hearing negative feedback or that they should write an article first is not in line with Meta:Civility.

By the way: !VOTE is a principle enwiki follows, that doesn't make it a "decision on Wikipedia", other Wikipedia language versions follow this principle less often (e.g. my homewiki dewiki as the second largest project literally does a vote count in our RfC-equivalent Meinungsbilder). And the Community Wishlist isn't an enwiki wishlist, not even a Wikipedia wishlist, it's a wishlist for all WMF projects (most of the sister projects also use voting more often than enwiki...)

And the whole point of focus areas is that people don't need to discuss individual wishes. The desired process is: Different users submit a couple of wishes concerning the same topic -> potentially a focus area where the WMF should allocate resources to -> voting in the Community Wishlist confirms that people want the WMF to improve stuff in this focus area -> WMF picks it up and conducts user research and community consultations to figure out the most pressing issues in this focus area (might be the wishes which have been submitted already, but it might turn out that some of them are bad ideas and other more important issues within that focus area haven't been mentioned yet) -> after user research and community consultations confirm the most important issues, the team starts working on those. @Johannnes89: That is a very creative interpretation of what I wrote. But it is wrong (almost the inverse of what actually happened).
I did not say: that they should write an article first, which would indeed be impolite. I said: I highly recommend writing an article. Even a stub. It is a great way to learn and experience Wikipedia.
I also did not say can't deal with hearing negative feedback, I tried to shield them from negative feedback by explaining that, reading between the lines, they did not make the decision, it was a long term thing, and not something they had control over.
The work culture of the company I was in was toxic. But I was in no position to make changes. No one was able to criticize internal decisions. But there are many possible reasons why an employee is unable to criticize a decision (e.g. the boss made the decision, it is a company-wide decision, the customer made the decision, they worked on the plan for a very long time et cetera). I have edited the comment to make it more clear. It is pretty rare to be able to say "oh yeah my boss is an idiot lol". Perhaps limited to self-employed people and the independently wealthy. I had actually listed what I believe the real reasons are: this is a long term thing and a WMF-wide decision that JWheeler-WMF did not make and is unable to change
Please do not misrepresent what I wrote a fifth time. Falsely accusing someone and repeatedly misrepresenting what someone wrote is not nice.
I do not know how the German equivalent of AfD works (It was good to read "Es sollte immer eine Phase der Diskussion vorausgehen" though), and when I talk about Wikipedia I basically talk about Wikipedia as I experience it (enwiki). List of Wikipedias tells me there are over 300. The list of languages I understand is (unfortunately) far shorter than that.
I fully understand Focus Areas and the upsides and downsides. I just don't think its a good idea.
Thank you, Polygnotus (talk) 11:17, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
