Hi Servien!

You asked me about my views on nds-nl. My basic position is the same as it was originally - that "Netherlands Low Saxon" is not a natural linguistic grouping and so I do not support having a wikipedia in it, but I also won't block one from being created. So my vote should be treated as neutral, even though I essentially disapprove. (I opposed it openly for a few days after my position was misinterpreted and my words were taken out of context, but I calmed down again.)

Low Saxon is sometimes treated as a single language, but I think it would be better to say that it is a group of languages. The range of languages is, I think, similar to the languages of Iberia, most of which already have wikipedias, or northern Italy, several of which have requests for wikipedias. Of course if native speakers of Low Saxon think of it as a single language, that's fine, and I respect that view. But dividing it into two wikis along the Dutch-German border doesn't seem fine to me. Even though there are some orthographical differences, I think these are pretty small compared to other differences between Low Saxon varieties. If there are going to be new wikipedias in forms of Low Saxon, it would be better to divide it along linguistic lines than national borders.

There are several good reasons for having several separate wikis for Low Saxon languages in the Netherlands.

  1. There is no common standard language or orthography, and I think it would be difficult for one to become generally accepted.
  2. Each of the main varieties is a written language, with its own body of literature, and many speakers do (unless I'm much mistaken) think of their variety as a distinct language. (Is this not true with Veluws?)
  3. Many linguists consider them to be separate languages, based on modern ideas of what a language is. For example, Ethnologue says there are 7 languages. (Though I think that's excessive - we don't need that many wikipedias.)
  4. They have official recognition under the Charter for Regional and Minority Languages. Note that the Netherlands government says the "Lower-Saxon languages used in the Netherlands" in its declaration of acceptance.
  5. Although the number of speakers of each variety is lower than Dutch or Limburgish, they are still viable languages. Now that they have official recognition, I think the situation will improve. There will be more efforts to preserve them, use them in the media, education, etc.
  6. They have ISO 639-3 codes - very important for creating new wikis! ("nds-nl" isn't really an ISO code, so it might be harder to create a Dutch Low Saxon wiki.)

I know you're worried that a Veluws-Sallands wikipedia might not be successful, but I think it will be. I mainly work on the Cornish wikipedia. We now have two regular contributors, with Babel templates of kw-2 (maybe kw-3) and kw-1 (that's me:-)). We have just over 600 articles after about 1 year (but I've only been editing for 4 months). One day I'm sure there'll be more than 10,000 articles, and many native Cornish speakers reading and editing our wikipedia (and it needs a _lot_ of editing!). A Veluws wikipedia will get off to a better start than the Cornish wiki, because you already have native speakers to contribute, and many other supporters who will try to help. If you translate lots of articles from nds:, nl:, li:, af: and de: I think it could grow quickly.

Anyway, I don't know if this is what you wanted to hear. Sorry I wrote a lot. As I said before, I won't block a nds-nl wiki, as I support having more Low Saxon wikis (even if I don't really agree with having one for nds-nl). But I think a Veluws-Sallands wiki is a better plan. And I will try to help either way (though it won't be much). --Chamdarae 17:23, 23 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Cornish

Cornish has between 400 and 4000 native speakers. Definitely less than Veluws. And yet their WP has over 300 articles... you should't be so afraid

This user has some difficulty collaborating with the community, and it is prefered not to incite reactions even when there are personal differences. - Amgine 22:22, 7 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Do not delete or refactor other user's comments when you are involved in a dispute with them. I understand your motivation was to reduce the conflict, but in this case I would suggest removing only your edits, and leave a message for the other user explaining that, since you've removed your edits, their responses seem out of place. I've reverted the comment deletions, but I'd like you to look at it again. - Amgine 17:16, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Could your help me?

In Requests_for_new_languages:

If there is a consensus to create a wiki in your proposed language, send a message to the appropriate mailing list asking a developer to set up the wiki.

Do you know what appropriate mailing list means? Who should I talk to?

Many thanks

Thank you for your help. It is Cantonese in the Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Chinese languages. There are 3 proposer, and 13 people interested to join, plus 3 supporters not in "interested to join list". (with 3 opposed.)

Thanks a lot.

Hello Servien, if You wish to modify a logo Yourself You would need the font Hoefler, which is not a free font, unfortunately. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 16:53, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Supplementary messages

Hello Servien.

I noticed that you translated the fundraiser's core messages into Nedersaksisch (nds-nl), thank you for your help! Although the fundraiser is over, your translation work will still be used until next November (when we get new forms).

Unfortunately, there are some missing messages and pages that were not included in the original request. Would you mind translating these supplementary messages too?

Thanks for your help, and please feel free to leave a message on m:Talk:Fundraising 2009/supplementary messages if you have any questions! Cbrown1023 talk 16:45, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
