Fundraising Committee

edit

Hi there! Thanks for volunteering to sit on the Fundraising committee. The work of the committee will be really valuable to making this year's annual giving campaign really effective. I've posted an overview to Fundraising 2010, and would love your thoughts on the talk page. I'm also going to try to set up an IRC meeting soon, and hope you'll join for that. Keep an eye Fundraising 2010/Committee for a couple of proposed times! Thanks again... Philippe (WMF) 18:23, 3 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Meeting

edit

Hi all,

I'd like to have a meeting on IRC this week to discuss the 2010-2011 annual appeal/fundraiser. This will be an "anyone is welcome" type meeting, open to the broad community. During this, Zack Exley and I will take you through our inital thoughts about the fundraiser and its organization, and ask you to join us in a discussion about the (massive) role of volunteers and chapters in this year's fundraiser.

Because of the vagaries of time zones, scheduling live meetings is hard. So, we'll have a couple of potential times, and we'll log and post the meeting for anyone who wasn't able to make it.

The meetings will be held Thursday, 12 August at 23:00 UTC (16:00 PDT) and Friday, 13 August at 16:30 UTC (09:30 PDT) in the #wikimedia-fundraising channel on the freenode network on IRC (irc://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-fundraising). You can access this using freenode's webclient, which is available at http://webchat.freenode.net/ or by using your favorite IRC client.

Hope to see you there! Philippe (WMF) 20:31, 10 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising 2010/Social Media

edit

Opps... didn't realise that you have the same thought. I guess I could request the page that I created to be deleted. We'll go ahead with the page you created. I will probably add on the page you created tomorrow so that there wouldn't be a data submission problem. --Diagramma Della Verita 17:49, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I proposed that the social media site be categorised based on their content rather than their name. Since there are tonnes of social media site, it is definitely impossible to list them all out. Instead of the name, perhaps we could organise them based on the content offered (photography and art sharing, video sharing, blogs and microblogging, social networking). Of course it is broad. For an example, videos can be shared on other sites like MetaCafe besides Youtube. --Diagramma Della Verita 18:11, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising 2010

edit

Hello Theo10011, thanks for showing interest in the fundraising committee. You can see that we've started to develop the Committee structure and I'd like to encourage your thoughts and participation in the formulation of the important role Wikimedians will play in our drive this year. Please leave me a message if you have a specific request from me, otherwise head to the talk pages and lets get started brainstorming! Hi Theo10011, messages in Italian are proposed in Fundraising_2010/Messages/Language/it, in Fundraising_2010/Messages/it there is a link (see the very beginning of this section) which point to the messages page. So, where were you thinking to move the page? Thanks for your interest. -- CristianCantoro 01:27, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Categories

edit

Hi, thank you for your interest in categorization, but:

  • it's not a good idea to flood Category:IRC with IRC office hours logs; subpages are often not categorized (because they're easily listed in their basepage, which in this case is already quite pretty), but if you want to add them to aa category it's better to create a subcategory, Category:IRC office hours or Category:IRC office hours logs;
  • Category:Wikimedia chapters was a duplicate of Category:Local chapters; moreover, pages are usually not added to both a category and one of its subcategories, so chapters with their own category shouldn't be added to the main category (which is already quite populated);
  • pages are usually added to maintanance categories not directly but via templates, e.g. {{MoveToCommons}} (although a category is better than nothing).

Thank you, Nemo 08:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I didn't revert all your edits, only chapters category (to delete it). Thank you, Nemo 13:25, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please use summary or description when you are adding SD tags. THX in advance --WizardOfOz talk 17:58, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Theo10011, I see you added categories to various pages related to EdwardsBot/Global message delivery. (I don't see how distributing the Signpost is related to "global maintenance", but I'll assume you put some thought into the categorization.) Did you test whether the bot still functions with an added category on pages such as Global message delivery/Status? I just removed it from that one because the bot didn't seem to start while it was there. I have also removed the category from the message content page, as I was concerned whether the bot would distribute the category together with the message to all the global subscribers; this would need testing too. Your RfA

edit

Your last adit on your RfA was not a kind of behavior I´m expecting from an admin here on meta. You should keep cool even if it is not running the way you like. The community here is a bit otherwise than on other projects. You should think about that we also handle some RfC and not just Categories, vandalism, deletions and such staff. If you loose your patience this way just because someone oppose you, what will you do if someone is expecting your comment which will perhaps resolve a problem of a whole community? Talking about a-b-c categories of users is a kind of not assuming of good faith. So please cool down, and at least slow down with such words. --WizardOfOz talk 17:36, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

This Tone is better :) NP, try to show your behavior as it´s usual, spend a bit more time here with us and I´m sure that even Thogo will support you next time :). Best regards --WizardOfOz talk 17:50, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps you can start with archiving of your request before you remove it from the request page? :D --WizardOfOz talk 17:54, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Theo. Just to elaborate my opposing your RfA a little further (as you seem to be quite unhappy with it, and that's not what I intended). Your first countable activity on Meta was in mid August, which is just two months ago. And most if not all of your work prior to the RfA was non-administrative work for which sysop rights are deemed unnecessary. Don't get me wrong, it's highly appreciated that you do such work, but sysop rights are not a kind of medal for good work, they are granted only if necessary on this project. That's why we have sysops who have barely a coupla hundred edits, and folks with thousands of edits but no sysop rights. So, the number of edits does not say anything, I don't even check that for a candidate. Important is only that the candidate has shown the need for sysop tools and has enough experience to use them on Meta. And now it's just that I think your experience with the Meta wiki is not yet enough to get sysop rights, that's nothing personal, and it's not a question of mistrust or anything. But as you know, the Meta wiki is different in its structure and contents from any other Wikimedia project, so you do need quite some experience to be able to make the right decisions as a sysop. Help with the administration of this wiki (and I don't mean only category shifting by that ;) ), check the recent changes, get more familiar with the structure of the wiki, and I'll gladly support you in the next run. I hope you can now understand my position a little bit better. :) --თოგო (D) 10:54, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I realized that you have recently posted the 2010 fundraising notice for community involvement on most WP editions through your WMF user. An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Theo10011, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List_of_administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

I would appreciate if you can tell me somebody who can get the logo changed and provide temporary adminship. :) Vibhijain 12:50, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Global sysops can probably help with your request. :) Theo10011 13:02, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I requested Prince Kassad but he is also not able to do so. He said to contact a Bugzilla developer. Pleas help. Vibhijain 15:04, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Actually, Prince Kassad uploaded the logo for you. But it's not getting updated because of local settings on pi.wiki. No admin or global sysop can fix that. Merlissimo gave an excellent explanation on your original steward request page. It's beyond the purview of sysop rights, and has to be addressed by server admins. Translator, We need you!

edit

Dear Theo10011,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

I don't know my way around the meta noticeboards so I figured I'd just drop you a note - m:User:TaylorHyde appears to be a silly spammy fellow, inserting an obviously out of place external link in this diff. Thanks kevin, looks like Courcelles has it under-control. Thanks for the heads-up, and for following up Courcelles. Meta is a small wiki, so we don't use noticeboards mostly, but you can always leave a message on Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat in case it's urgent and I'm not around on IRC. Thanks again and keep up the good work. Later. Theo10011 17:07, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

With [2], you signed a request on the RFH page as "The Management," omitting your own signature. I took it as, more or less, a joke. But now you really seem to be asserting that non-admins are not welcome to comment and participate in possible consensus formation, recognition, and discussion on the RFH page.

If you'll look at this comment on Talk:RFH, you'll see that I'd support some kind of sensible restriction, but that is not the present practice, and we have piles of users who are not admins here commenting on requests if they are controversial. Until that changes, I see no instructions, guidelines, or policies supporting what you are asserting. If non-admins should not comment on RFH, that should be stated in the page instructions. Is that what you want?

The RFH page is for requests to admins, and what I most recently posted there, which you opposed, has often been exactly that: a request for an admin to act, specifically a closure by an uninvolved administrator. Can you clarify what you object to? Do you believe that you have a superior right, as an administrator, to discuss requests on that page? --Abd 23:03, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Abd block stuff

edit

Hey Theo, just wanted to clarify a couple of things, and I don't really want to add to the textwalls on that page. First of all, I sympathize and agree with your stance that this page should be for what it was intended for; requesting help from a local admin or 'crat. Unfortunately, it is quite often used for finding consensus for blocks, which as you agree should really be moved to another page. Part of the problem with that is that there is no good other page to do this on - perhaps one should be created.

As to why I quoted random IP vandalizing, those were the exact words that you used in an earlier comment, and to be honest there wasn't any real reason why I had quotations there. Hope that clears some things up. Regards, Ajraddatz (Talk) 18:07, 21 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Spaming

edit

Hi Theo.

I am sorry if it seems spamming but I didn’t find another way. The issue is not off-wiky or at least it is not off-meta. It is related to Iberocoop initiative. One month ago I sent a message to the mailing list of this project but as they told me it seems they have problems and it is not working. Three weeks ago I put the message in the Iberocoop talk page but it seems nobody is watching it. In order to reduce the number of posts I only sent a message to one of the members of each group. I suppose in each group they have mailing lists to communicate with each other but among them the only mean is the mailing list that is not working. --Gomà 13:08, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me

edit

Dear Theo10011,
If someone lied about you, and every time that his real name was searched in search engines that lie came as an early response, how would you feel? If you lost a job because of it? And if you had a fight with one of your best friends because of that lie, how would you feel?

I could translate for you what I wrote, and prove that it was a lie, until then, I would ask that at least the courtesy , but which I really liked is that this attack was removed and "overviewed". That user has several problems with me and it is common to carry out these attacks. I would not mind if it was not affecting my life outside the Wiki.Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 12:47, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I believe I explained this issue elsewhere. What you are describing is called a libel, and it is very common on Wiki. There are of course shades of it, ranging from accusing someone of lying or plain out manufacturing a criminal record. This happens daily. What you don't seem to understand that the attack was not removed, or "overviewed", I suggest you ask around for what those imply. I am surprised that you don't know this as a Wikipedian, you know revisions of pages can be reverted, the actual content can already be indexed by google regardless if anyone blanks it later. Removing information from an earlier revision does not remove its existence, anyone can revert. Casey just blanked the section, the information earlier was still there, only hidden in the latest revision. It would not stop google from linking to it again. The only option for suppression is asking a steward on Meta, and they will decide. I recall you already tried that, but that is the only way to suppress, and the stewards are the only ones who deal with this on a daily basis. I or casey can not remove the information already there. Theo10011 00:04, 29 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

yeah, could be reversed, but it would not be exposed like that, I tried to talk with stweards and they ignored me, and I thought that as in other wikis, sysops could also do this work here. So I contacted Casey, just that, ok I will try again. Thanks for your time. Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 07:10, 29 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sysops can not. As I told you, this is exactly what stewards are elected for, they deal with this stuff daily. Sysops don't have nearly the same tools as the stewards for this. They are the only ones who can decide. Since this also happens to be an RfC on meta, the protocol might be different, I would suggest asking stewards before anyone else. Regards. Regarding changes in India Program/Team

Dear Theo10011, The page India Program/Team will contain the team structure and their involvement. So, in the Template:India programs it is supposed to be Team and Work, not only "Team". So, I am adding that again. And thanks for adding the <hr> :) Subha WMF

I made that template. 'Team & work' sounds odd to me for some reason, maybe not to you. Anyway, it's your decision, it doesn't appear very professional, stylistically out-of-place. As for the horizontal ruler, you are welcome, like I said, my template. Theo10011 21:58, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sinking ship

edit

Wikimedia has more corruption based on money and power than DC. Not necessarily taking bribes, but it is a self-perpetuating monster. It wont change, and too many people are benefiting too much. It is definitely a lost cause, and peaked in 2010 in a direct relationship with many of these stupid ideological based policies. Ottava Rima (talk) 01:19, 17 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

By the way, you said Liam made a good point. I would disagree strongly. He was saying how people like him needed money, when he did little to help in any fashion. The actual people who need support are the rare content experts. They are not here for money. Instead, they are drowned out, harassed, or just constantly hindered by the 99.99% of users who can't contribute. GLAM and things like it take the project in the wrong direction and make a mockery of it. Ottava Rima (talk) 01:06, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

As I said here. It is obvious that he has a severe conflict of interest and wants to use a power he should, for all rights, not have anymore to try and intimidate. No wonder Wikipedia is trashed so hard in the press. Ottava Rima (talk) 02:52, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:27, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

edit

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:22, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Danke Pete. This seems to be getting a lot of activity. Good work! Theo10011 (talk) 08:23, 21 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Trolling?

I can't help but notice your signature in lots of major discussions around the site. Your comments mostly irk me as it seems you've had some Kool-Aid. Hope all is well. Killiondude (talk) 00:02, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hiya Killion. Heh. I don't think I'm sure half the time myself what I'm doing, if you know what I mean...... You'll have to be a bit more specific about what you are referring to than just finding my signature around the site. ;) I've always had those opinions, and I don't think they have gone through any major overhaul, you can look through my comments from 2012 or so on meta. And it's not like my opinions are in the minority, I just have had a lot more exposure to these issues than you might think on the now defunct super secret lists. A few of our common friends hold similar positions. Perhaps you had the wrong impression of me? Either way, You'd know more if you were active here. I still miss ya bortha™!!! What's up with the WMF?

edit

Hey, can you summarize what's going on with the WMF/Lila Tretikov specifically? I'm out of the loop. Thanks. PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:36, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hiya PiRSquared17. Glad to have you back dude. Well, there were very tumultuous last few months at WMF. Just with the board itself - James Heilman who was elected representative, was forcibly removed by the rest of the board, and there were a lot of accusations back-and-forth about why. They also appointed a new board member (previously HR person from google) who was part of some anti-trust case, the community found out, opposed and he had to resign before even officially joining. Then, issues with the staff started - There were a lot of staff departures and a falling level of trust among staff for senior leadership (Lila) in an internal survey. There were a lot of empty positions and internal conflict which the board was also party to. Lila wanted to develop a new project, a sort of a search engine (aka discovery aka knowledge engine) which was originally pitched as a google competitor. She applied for a grant from Knight foundation for several millions - got $250,000 to develop something to show - the community found out, interrogated/analysed and refused that direction. More staff objected openly to Lila, with several people calling for her resignation including ex-board and current staff - a full-on revolt basically. She finally resigned. And WMF currently has no executive, little senior leadership and a lot of staff and board issues. Last I read, Jimmy was headed to SF to talk and see things personally. I think that about covers the broad strokes. ;) Theo10011 (talk) 23:52, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Good summary, Theo -- hope you don't mind if I add a couple bits:
  • It's become increasingly clear that Doc James' role in staff discontent with Lila's leadership, dating back to at least November 2015 before any of this was public, is strongly connected with his dismissal. James has spoken fairly openly about it, while trying to protect others' expectations of privacy; the board has generally declined to say anything specific about it, but at least two board members (Jimmy and Denny) have strongly criticized James' narrative, without offering an alternative one. I think it's fair to say much community & staff sympathy lies with James on all this; and there have been many calls for more transparency around it (and in general).
  • Good resources, if you want to dig deeper: a simple timeline put together by User:GorillaWarfare; coverage in the English Wikipedia Signpost (in several stories) has been very thorough; and Revolution of 2016 is a good collection of pages here on Meta aiming to process all the information and discussions.
Hope this helps... -Pete F (talk) 00:13, 3 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Excellent additions, Pete. Molly's timeline is great and I should have provided a link to it. These are good points. Thanks. Theo10011 (talk) 08:16, 3 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
