Thanks

edit

Thank you for your polite reply here, I won't lie I was slightly puzzled by his first reply and then even more bemused by his second reply but figured it wasn't worth being blocked over lol.
Anyway thanks for calling a spade a spade lol. Hope you and yours are safe and well mate, Take care and all the best, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:36, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey Davey, thank's for the message. I unblocked Ottawahitech recently as they had been contributing constructively on the English Wikinews. Unfortunately, it seems that the issues which necessitated the original block are still present. Anyways, I'm happy to see you taking part in the Steward Elections, and hope you're doing well. It's unfortunate that we haven't crossed paths very much lately. Best, Vermont (talk) 19:01, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hey Vermont, Unfortunately I think your good faith may have been wasted on them - His recent edits don't exactly fill me with much confidence and tbh I sense people are becoming more fed up of him as the days go on. To be absolutely honest with you I feel I know this place better than he does yet he edits here frequently whereas I pop by what twice a year if that? ... how does that work ?   ,
Yeah I remember seeing a steward banner ages ago on Commons but never visited and only just remembered about it for some reason so ended up searching around here trying to find it lol. Never usually on here unless it's !voting or an important RFC!,
Anyway nice to see a friendly face here! :),
Yeah not too bad thanks lockdown's been driving me bonkers tho, Was sat in the house all day every day from March to October, Come October I started going for walks again and I loved it!. Weather was crap but it was nice getting out ... but then lockdown 3 happened so since January I've been stuck indoors again!, Paranoid about catching it and then giving it to my parents so staying for the time being!,
Anyway hope you and yours have been safe and well as can be, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 19:33, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
With the inter-state travel restrictions, I've basically been stuck except when I'm able to quarantine/get tested, so I haven't been able to do very much lol. Fortunately, ski resorts are still open, so I've got that. Sad to hear you've been stuck inside; at least here in VT there's very low population density, so outdoors are not much of an issue. However, more inside time = more Wikimedia time, eh? Best, Vermont (talk) 21:32, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sucks not being able to do what you like or where you like :(, Oh cool!, That's one thing I've never done is ski-ing, always wanted too tho :), Haha that's one to look at it lol, Anyway it's been nice hearing from you, No doubt I'll see you around :), Take care mate and stay safe, Warmest Regards, –Davey2010Talk 22:01, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Quick Assistance

edit

Hey Vermont, quick question. I've been trying to crop images so that I could use them for Deaths in 2021 as I've been doing for the past 4-5 years but all of a sudden I can no longer crop images using crop tool because it says "Upload failed! [api] Received error: autoblocked : Your IP address has been blocked automatically, because it was used by a blocked user" even though I haven't received any notifications let alone any warnings that would suggest this. Crop Tool is the only tool that's giving me problems or mentions that I've been blocked by a user. I can still edit on all other Wikis. I'm confused and a tad frustrated. Would you know how to resolve this? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 06:41, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

TDKR Chicago 101, unfortunately not, but I've passed it on. Best, Vermont (talk) 14:55, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Vermont: This has happened to you before? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 14:56, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
TDKR Chicago 101, no it hasn't. Vermont (talk) 14:56, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
TDKR Chicago 101, are you able to edit pages on Commons normally outside of crop tool? Vermont (talk) 14:58, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Vermont Yes I can, I have no banners saying I've been blocked, I've uploaded files recently and have no complications editing. The only time where a block notice appears is when using the crop tool. I just looked at the talk page for crop tool and every use occupying the tool is having the same complication. So it isn't me it appears something is wrong with the tool. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 15:00, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. If you’re an active Wikimedian, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

Global lock on my account

edit

Hello. I don't understand why your going to globally lock my account. I do not remember any long term abuse as you stated here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Steward_requests/Global#Global_lock_for_SockPuppetInvestigatorforSockpuppets

Also, I never heard of this other account: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:SockPuppetInvestigatorforSockpuppets

Could you please clarify this? Was all of this a mistake or were you going to lock some other account?

About os.wiki

edit

Znauri (Qornisi) is part of Georgia and now is occupied by Russia, and there is non-recognized republic South Ossetia, I have made change in this page, I have just written that it's territory of Georgia but administrator of os.wiki has reverted my edit and now I am not able to edit this page because this user has defensed this page, please help me https://os.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D0%97%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%83%D1%8B%D1%80&type=revision&diff=494522&oldid=494521 --ჯეო (talk) 10:22, 1 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Pinging Taamu. I remember this conversation, unfortunately. ჯეო, the Wikipedia article would optimally reflect the fact that South Ossetia, though having it's own government and not directly under Georgian control, has it's independence contested by Georgia. It would optimally not make the blanket claim that it is part of Georgia, nor that it is occupied by Russia, as the available reliable, independent sources do not reflect that. Please see en:South Ossetia for what seems like a good way to describe it in an encyclopedic manner. And I will also make a very important note: Meta-Wiki administrators, Global sysops, Stewards, etc., cannot and will not involve themselves in this type of editorial dispute, and you should not be asking us to act on it. I'm only giving my opinion because I'm trying to help; it has no inherent weight or backing. This is an editorial dispute to be decided on the project the dispute occurs at and through that project's usual pathways of resolving such disputes. Continually edit warring over these issues and running to Meta-Wiki for help is not likely to end particularly well. Best, Vermont (talk) 15:06, 1 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes I know that it's style but there is not any word about Georgia, they can just write that it's part of internationally recognized borders of Georgia, but when I tried to do this they just reverted it and defensed the page, what does it means? How after this we can call os.wikipedia free? I have just messaged to stuff of meta because there is no way to talk to the admin of os.wiki, because they are living in their world :), ok, thanks for message--ჯეო (talk) 15:58, 1 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Scope and continuing discussion

edit

Copied by Zblace from User_talk:Zblace#Scope_and_continuing_discussion, where it is in-line answered, while here returned to singular replies by Vermont.

Hey Zblace. I have a relatively short response to your comments above. I had a very positive opinion of you, and even considered you a colleague/friend, before the incident on that RfD. I'm hoping you remember our positive and productive email conversations prior to that incident; you even contacted me directly about the RfD issue, and before I saw what you had written there about other contributors I had every intention of helping you. However, after revieiwng your conduct, which involved numerous personal attacks and outright hostile statements, including but not limited to accusing editors (multiple of whom happen to be LGBT+) of being homophobic, calling people "inadequate", referring to another editor as "hysterical", describing those who disagreed with you as "voices of suppression", directly stating that Simple English Wikipedia editors are fascists and colluding with fascists, and other issues, there was no other option but to place a block on your account. We have a civility policy on the Simple English Wikipedia and we (yes, the block was not only my idea) enforce it. My attempt with the above decriptions of your conduct was not to argue about what happened, but to state the chronological order of events leading up to your block. Your responses to me here do include some rather unkind and untrue statements (namely, accusing me of, as a result of me supposedly being anglo-saxon, being unable to view other sides of an argument. Again, I'm an Ashkenazi Jew, and regardless you cannot base an argument purely off another person's race.) involving assumptions and subsequent insinuations about my race, which is uncivil and offensive to an extreme degree, but I do not want this to be a further issue. I want us to return to communicating productively and positively, as that would be most beneficial for continued constructive contributing on issues of joint interest. And I do not like having my only contact with people being in an administrative, conduct-related capacity. A common saying is prevalent across some projects: focus on content, not contributors. That's a sure way to avoid personal attacks. I want to work with you on this, and return to the point in our personal discourse where we could freely discuss issues of joint interest without the overbearing presence of insinuations of ulterior motives or personal attacks. I hope you agree with these intentions. Best, Vermont (talk) 02:33, 5 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

This is indeed relative. --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
This is also part of the problem. You have narrow attention focus (on incident) and limited interest in wider context (basically, RfD only)...you fail to realize that my effort and work is a cross-wiki, cross-cultural and my frustration with you as authority is that you ignored incidents that other users were making for me before and during this RfD. But that is your priviledge of following the 'by the book' rules and remaining ignorant of effects of their actions of at least 5 other wikis (among which are super complex and sensitive ones like HR and SH Wikipedia). --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
I have no idea how was I to get that you were to help me? You never said anything. Including objections to my 'hasty' experiments...or maybe you think help is something you give after things are obvious? Pardon me for sounding cynical, but it is hard not to be now, as I feel this leans to patronizing, rather than collegial/friendly input you reference above. --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
I will not comment on generic interpretation and description of my own words, nor about WHEN and HOW you finally took action, as I thing both leave a lot to desire for to be considered well done work. You did next to nothing to remove or even warn people who did problematic actions and inputs across projects and also somewhat on that RfD. In that respect you acted not as well intended custodian, but a meer policing authority. --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Again I will not comment on what is not linked to exact cite, since it is your interpretation. If you feel I was discussing sexual orientation or race, you are totally wrong. I was discussing only queer as non-normative and anglo-saxon communication culture *(neither is dependent on your actual geneology or behavioral characteristics). Again this was your narrow interpretation of identity politics to which I do not subscribe. --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
You are welcome to communicate as you wish and (ab)use your authority as you wish. I have little motivation to spend even more time discussing this directly with you without moderator and other people that have broader interests and deeper incentives to research and understand than just make vague remarks of 'civility'.
You Admin collective on Simple thinks I am problematic and that was the way to handle the situation. I think that Simple is problematic project and would no longer contribute until it is questioned and restored with its initial focus on non-native speakers and would de-center monolingual English natives. --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
I am sure that worked well to old-school pragmatics to create many of Wikis till know, but I am really into people-centeredness and this is where our perspectives are radically different. --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
I know almost nothing of you. All of my comments were to your (non)actions when performing power. You offered zero advice or assistance in your non-admin role. --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
As stated before...I can not deal with this 1:1 as I feel like I am supposed to educate you at the cost of my emotional and intelectual labor, while you are both casual and in power and I am marked with a reference of a ban in a the Wiki you are responsible for. If there is capasity in WMF's Community Ressilaince team to deal with this I will do it, but not on my talk page and under your terms.
By the way I am also to move this to your page as I failed to answer in the classical way. --Zblace (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wednesday July 28: Wikispore Day Unconference

You are invited to participate in a virtual unconference for this year!

  • 12:002:00 pm (New York City time)
  • (16:00–18:00 UTC/GMT, 18:00–20:00 Berlin)

Since Wikispore is probably the only Wikimedia project to be born at a picnic, you are encouraged to participate from a socially-distanced green space outdooors if possible.

IP masking

edit

Hi. I've been around the en.Wiki for a rather long time and been instrumental in getting several rights and policies established. I understand you are also concerned with civility - I know you mean well, but your comments to me are beginning to sound patronising. Best, Kudpung (talk) 01:40, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Kudpung, I am very much concerned with civility and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere, and I apologize sincerely if my comments were interpreted as patronizing. That was not my intention at all. My intention was to clear up what I interpreted as confusion with Johan's comment, as there is a significant difference between creating a MediaWiki user right that projects can locally allocate and the Foundation unilaterally applying them at will to projects. The former is technically necessary for IP masking to be selective, and the latter would result in significant global backlash. I also just noticed that Johan did explicitly mention a user group and the WMF deciding requirements for it roughly a month ago; it is possible that they have some degree of confusion with the specifics of user rights and user groups, and I was justifying something I misinterpreted. Regardless, my intention was not to start an argument of any sort, and thank you for the note here. Best, Vermont (talk) 02:00, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Apology accepted. The degree of difference between 'groups' and 'rights' is academic. In practice locally, for establishing the local criteria for according user rights of this kind, and who will be authorised to accord them and through what process, such as at PERM for example, it makes no difference. The concerns we (the volunteers from the communities) are discussing relate to the perceived need for IP masking to which despite having been asked several times by several users, Johan has apparently been unable to obtain any satisfactory answers from those who are assumed to be in control, nor is he willing to communicate who is in charge.
At the moment, there have only been fleeting mentions on en.Wiki of this intended new WMF policy, so there is still not much participation here on Meta except for a handful of us who do stay up to date with much as possible with what the WMF is planning. Kudpung (talk) 02:26, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the thanks 🙂
In case you're interested, if the WMF were to impose IP masking (which seems to be the way they are bound), there would be a major RFC on en.Wiki whether to accept it or to simply ban IP editing altogether. Some of the smaller Wikis might still heavily rely on anonymous edits, but for the bigger ones and judging from the Portuguese experience, the downsides of IP editing now outweigh the advantages. No one can however predict the outcome of such a debate. Kudpung (talk) 02:57, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Un-delete Hiri Motu wiki request plz?

edit

Hi. I noticed a user deleted the page Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Hiri Motu. While it was created by a blocked account (I don't want to associate with that account or start any controversy), I myself (and the community) would like to explained on it. It was a request for a new language, so I don't think it should be deleted. So could you please un-delete the page? Thanks. 120.156.26.225 05:55, 10 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

RFCU case about me

Are there any reasons that that section can't be closed yet? All the doubts are seem resolved, that I don't act anything 117.* did, and however 117.* looks like another sock-master. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:17, 19 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bumping?! --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:05, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi Liuxinyu970226. Apologies for the late reply on this. I'm not sure how to respond, as I have no specific comments on this issue. It is, however, quite fortunate that the IP range has not edited since. Best, Vermont (talk) 23:07, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
If so then why not {{Inconclusive}} it? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:06, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
We do not publicly comment on the possibility of connections between accounts and IPs. Vermont (talk) 03:02, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
So how to close that section? I see no benefits to open it for several months. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:28, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Requests for adminship

edit

I would be interested in being an administrator in Meta, I am already an temporaly administrator in wikiversity, and an active contributor in eswiki and Commons and I would like to collaborate in the fight against vandalism, and I wanted to ask you if I can request this permission without opposition. Thank you in advance for your time. MONUMENTA (talk) 14:40, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@MONUMENTA: Meta:Administrators Why would want rights here when you hardly edit here. Contribute against vandalism first, build a reputation of competent and trusted actions then put your name forward, not the other way around. There are zero free passes at this wiki.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:43, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I greatly appreciate your assessment billinghurst, I was misinformed about the need for administrators here.MONUMENTA (talk) 02:22, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
