Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

Superprotect letter update

Hi Zellfaze,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

It's ok, I really appreciate your intention. My idea is that a kind of consultation where people actually discuss ideas is not what many editors are used to. Community's discussions have the form of idea --> list of +1, where no real discussion about ways to move forward take place. If you have ideas about how to make the structure we gave to that page work better, we're certainly interested, that's why I gave you the link above. I also understand people certainly need places to vent, this just doesn't happen to be a good venue for that. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 11:20, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

@Elitre (WMF): Indeed. I think I'm going to go ahead and try to articulate my ideas a little bit better under the section heading you created, and then I'm going to take a break from these discussions for the remainder of the day to give myself a chance to calm down and get level headed again. I'm heading to the Renn Fair today, so that should be useful for that. In the meantime maybe I should just listen to Wikipedia and read some articles. Hopefully by the end of the day I'll have thought on it enough to have a better more specific suggestion. I really wish the escalation of things we've seen recently hadn't happened, though I suspect in the end it will eventually lead to some useful reforms (in some ways it already has the (WMF) accounts are something that needed done for a long time). Pass my thanks on to everyone at the WMF who have managed to remain level headed throughout all of this. It can't be easy. Re: No open proxies

On your «I could reach out to the maintainer of ClueBotNG and see what could be done to get it to interface with AbuseFilter such that any edits it sees as unconstructive are tagged, and if that isn't possible maybe just have it log such edits somewhere special»: these talks are already being had for Grants:IEG/Revision_scoring_as_a_service. Edit-a-thon Draft Report on Meta

Hello Zellfaze, I’m from the Program Evaluation & Design team at the WMF. Late last year we received data on edit-a-thons which were completed between September 2013 and September 2014--now the edit-a-thon evaluation report draft is ready for your review. I'm reaching out now because we would love your feedback before we announce the report to the broader community.

• Does the analysis and presentation resonate with your programs?
• How is the report useful to you as a program leader?
• What other data would help to tell the story of edit-a-thons?

Also, would you be willing to contribute a quote for the report? For example, what motivated you to lead the edit-a-thon? What did success look like to you? If you can send a quote by August 16th I would love to include it in the report.

In this report we were able to present 121 edit-a-thons that brought in 2,275 participants and included 5,272 articles created or improved. We expect that this report will help our communities have a more comprehensive view of editathons around the world.

If you want to discuss edit-a-thons and the report findings with other program leaders, we’re hosting a virtual panel of program leaders with group discussion on the themes and findings the week of August 24th. If you have key themes you would like to discuss in the hangout, please do share them on the report talk page!

The estimated plan for review:

• Program leaders who submitted data to review until August 16.
• L&E to incorporate feedback and announce on the PE&D mailing list and social media the week of August 17.
• WMF blog post and a virtual panel the week of August 24.

Queering Wikipedia 2021 User Group Working Days: May 14-16

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. If you’re an active Wikimedian, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

Queering Wikipedia 2022 Announcement

Wikimedia LGBT+ and the organizing team of Queering Wikipedia is holding a Queering Wikipedia 2022 Meeting for LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies. The program will start with an informative, social and cultural activity on Friday 21st October at 18h UTC and working sessions on Saturday 22nd from 14h until 18h with an informal follow-up.

If you have been an active Wikimedian, contributing on LGBT+ topics, supporting LGBT+ activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT+ community and allies in Wikimedia, please come help us build our network of LGBT+ Wikimedians, set goals and develop our organization.

We will be meeting online, but encourage you to join in person with fellow Wikimedians if easy and safe. Our working languages are English and Spanish.

Registration for this online event is free and is open until Friday 21st October at 21h UTC.

Queering Wikipedia 2023 conference

Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group and the organizing team of Queering Wikipedia is delivering the Queering Wikipedia 2023 Conference for LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies, as a hybrid, bilingual and trans-local event. It is online on 12, 14 and 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT, with offline events at around 10 locations on 5 continents in the 5-day span as QW2023 Nodes.

The online program is delivered as a series of keynotes, panels, presentations, workshops, lightning talks and creative interventions, starting on Friday noon (UTC) with the first keynote of Dr Nishant Shah entitled: I spy, with my little AI — Wikiway as a means to disrupt the ‘dirty queer’ impulses of emergent AI platforms. Second keynote is at Sunday’s closure by Esra’a Al Shafei, Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees vice chair, entitled: Digital Public Spaces for Queer Communities.

If you have been an active Wikimedian or enthusiast, supporting LGBT+ activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT+ community and allies in Wikimedia, please join us in advancing this thematic work. We encourage you to join online or in person with fellow Wikimedians if it is easy and safe to do so. Our working languages are English and Spanish, with possible local language support at sites of Nodes.
