You have a global IP block exemption, পরস, so that should work for the English Wikipedia. What errors are you getting when you try to edit there? --TheSandDoctor Talk 15:57, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Request for longer-term interface adminship

edit

Hi ~riley!

We have an ongoing discussion at v:Wikiversity:Candidates for Custodianship/DannyS712 (interface administrator) that seems to be stalled regarding granting v:user:DannyS712 longer term interface administration. Of our four bureaucrats only two seem to be interested in the situation who can grant this approval.

I am not familiar enough with users at meta who contribute to Wikiversity to ask for them to comment on this request and it appears our generally active community either isn't large enough or perhaps isn't interested enough.

If you know those here at meta that might be willing to comment or perhaps mentor DannyS712 or help out with this, could you ask them to have a look or let me know and I can ask them?

Thanks in advance for your kind consideration of this request. --Marshallsumter (talk) 23:53, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

The reality is that no intervention from myself or another member of the Meta community will have an impact on this request. This comes down to community culture and the involved 'crats have already spoken. Their community does not appoint long term interface admins; there is just no precedence. While I think they are failing to recognize Danny's worth, he should have recognized this lack of precedence and provided more of a case for long term permissions. While I think no use case should need to be presented considering many wikis hand out interface admin like it's candy to their regular admins, this isn't the standard on that wiki. Trust me, I did spend time considering this. I wrote out a full paragraph for that request and nearly posted it but I do not think an outsider can help this situation. Danny should accept the limited offer that has been provided by the 'crats, hit them with half a dozen requests over the period of one to three months, and then revisit the conversation once the 'crats have realized how counterproductive their process is. I laughed when I read that they suggested using a global interface admin. Danny is 10x smarter than I am, and I am more likely to break things inserting his code because he is the one familiar with it, not me. It also means that if his code doesn't work, or I make a mistake, there will be a delay in it being fixed. Using global interface admins as an expendable resource when a qualified competent admin is offering their services is inappropriate. ~riley (talk) 11:36, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. If you’re an active Wikimedian, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

Queering Wikipedia 2023 conference

edit

Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group and the organizing team of Queering Wikipedia is delivering the Queering Wikipedia 2023 Conference for LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies, as a hybrid, bilingual and trans-local event. It is online on 12, 14 and 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT, with offline events at around 10 locations on 5 continents in the 5-day span as QW2023 Nodes.

The online program is delivered as a series of keynotes, panels, presentations, workshops, lightning talks and creative interventions, starting on Friday noon (UTC) with the first keynote of Dr Nishant Shah entitled: I spy, with my little AI — Wikiway as a means to disrupt the ‘dirty queer’ impulses of emergent AI platforms. Second keynote is at Sunday’s closure by Esra’a Al Shafei, Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees vice chair, entitled: Digital Public Spaces for Queer Communities.

If you have been an active Wikimedian or enthusiast, supporting LGBT+ activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT+ community and allies in Wikimedia, please join us in advancing this thematic work. We encourage you to join online or in person with fellow Wikimedians if it is easy and safe to do so. Our working languages are English and Spanish, with possible local language support at sites of Nodes.

Registration for the online event is free and is open until Wednesday May 10th at 18:00 UTC, for safety protocol. Late event registration approval and event access denial is at the discretion of organizers.
