The WikiAlpenforum/WAF is an international and multilingual project which aims to expand content about the Alps. The project is active on Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia , Wikimedia Commons , and Wikidata ) in the languages of the Alpine space. Topics range from geography and geology of the Alps to the history of transport over the Alps, from mountaineering, mountain huts, culture, cuisine and traditions to Alpine flora and fauna, from politics, international affairs and people to environmental protection, monumental preservation and tourism.

The project idea was born at a meet-up of German-speaking Wikipedians on 29 January 2016 in Salzburg, Austria. A workshop in Munich on 24 February 2017 marked its official start. The project is since supported by Wikimedia Deutschland together with the other chapters of Alpine countries.

The coordination of the WikiAlpenforum is primarily taking place in English as a working language. It also aims to increase the participation of volunteers of the three language communities (German, Italian and French) at encounters and excursions which are organized by other volunteers.

Goals

edit

The WAF provides opportunities to work on various topics related to the Alps. Due to the breadth of the subjects at disposal, an emphasis will be put to the enhancement of existing articles that should inspire the writing of missing ones. A central objective of the project is also the creation of good quality images; for that reason, other initiatives like Wiki Loves Earth or Wiki Loves Monuments should be involved as much as possible.
