WikiSanjog-A Mentorship Program by Assamese Wikimedia Community

This program has been initiated by the Assamese Wikimedia Community to help and guide any newcomers who are interested in contributing to different Assamese Wikimedia projects. This initiative aims to encourage and support new contributors by providing them with the necessary guidance, training, and a welcoming environment to freely ask questions and seek assistance.

Through this program, experienced and active community members will mentor and guide new participants, helping them navigate the various Assamese Wikimedia platforms, such as Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikiquote, and others. The mentorship will focus on building skills, fostering active engagement, and ensuring that new members feel confident in making valuable contributions.

This initiative will empower both mentors and mentees, fostering a stronger, more collaborative community, and help advance the growth and development of Assamese Wikimedia projects.

Selection:

  • Interested mentors and mentees must register before 30 September 2024.
  • Selection will be based on the individual's commitment and interest in volunteering for Assamese Wikimedia projects.
  • Each mentor may guide up to three mentees. If additional mentees express interest, the mentor should coordinate and connect them with other mentors to ensure all participants receive adequate support.
  • Since the relationship between the mentor and the mentee will determine the success of this project, the mentor is encouraged to get to know the mentee before selecting them. It is recommended that the mentors discuss beforehand why the potential mentee is interested in wiki work, what projects they are interested in, how much time they can devote or what kind of help they need.

Mentor:

  • Active members across any Wikimedia project (Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikidata, Wikiquote, etc.) who are interested in mentoring.
  • Mentors are not required to have specific technical expertise in any project. A willingness to guide, encourage, and support is the key for participating in this program.

Mentee:

  • Open to anyone with an interest in contributing to Assamese Wikimedia projects.
  • No specific educational qualifications or age restrictions.
  • Participants must be willing to volunteer for the growth of Assamese Wikimedia projects.
  • Access to the internet is required; the program is entirely online.

Mentor

Role of Mentors:

  • Mentors are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills collaboratively. Mutual support between mentors ensures a comprehensive learning environment.
  • Throughout the duration of the mentorship, both mentor and mentee will continue to have regular contact, online or offline, depending on availability.
  • Wikiclasses and group sessions can be organized to facilitate joint learning across different topics and projects.

  • Help mentees understand project guidelines, technical skills, and best practices.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes continued engagement.

Mentee

Why participate?

  • Learn how to contribute to any Assamese Wikimedia project (Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikiquote, etc.) at your own pace.
  • Access to one-on-one mentorship to guide you through the intricacies of your chosen project.
  • Free participation—no fees or charges are required.
  • There are no time or location restrictions. You can contribute from anywhere in the world.
  • Mentees can learn and contribute at their convenience, balancing their personal and professional commitments.

Responsibilities

  • The mentee will choose to contribute to any project on the wiki.
  • The mentee will be responsible for participating in the entire duration of the mentorship (until December 31, 2024) if they join this project.
  • The mentee will make a plan in collaboration with their chosen mentor for the duration of the mentorship program with specific goals depending on their interest and availability.
  • During the mentorship period, the mentee will try to contribute to different wiki projects as much as possible.

WikiSanjog Conference

An one-day collaborative event between Assamese Wikimedia Community and CIS-A2K, that is intended as the official closing of the first phase of WikiSanjog-Assamese Wikimedia's Mentorship Program and anniversary celebration for Assamese Wikisource and Assamese Wikiquote. The event includes talks/presentations by the senior members, hands-on activities on Assamese Wikimedia projects and distribution of prizes to the top mentees and the 'Assamese Wikimedian of the year'.
