Abstract:
Seminar papers and other academic products written by university students are typically never utilized outside of the given courses. The possibilities of edit-a-thons in the higher education will be presented; how it can stimulate student motivation and create active involvement, how it can develop the students' key competencies, and media and information literacy skills. As an example, the Hungarian Shakespeare edit-a-thon, organised annually since 2014 for English major master students to write Wikipedia articles in different languages as their assignments, will be presented. |

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?
Involving university students in edit-a-thons cannot just improve their skills and competences but – by encouraging and engaging them – can help Wikipedia become a growing and better place. Wikipedia can play a relevant role in public, gamified and non-formal education: by editing students can acquire media and information literacy skills and key competencies that are essential in our time or might be in the future. A working partnership between higher education institutions and Wikimedia communities is essential in the organising of a successful edit-a-thon: presenting existing use-cases can initiate other future projects as well. |
