Wikimedia CH/50Y Swiss Women's Suffrage/Participation
Participate & Contribute
Wikimedia CH aims to motivate the voluntary community to participate in our events and contribute content around the topic "50 years Women's Suffrage in Switzerland" and women's biographies to the Wikimedia projects. Moreover, cultural institutions and like-minded organization holding collections and material can also actively participate in closing the knowledge and gender gap, by making information, image collections and documentations accessible to the public in digitized form. If you want to take a more active role and you have an idea for an interesting activity following the same vision we have, you can contact us and request our support.
There are many ways to contribute. Enhancing the quality of an article with additional sources, content and images, is one of them. We have realized, that in Switzerland several memory institutions have a web archive encompassing relevant digitized image collections, which are either in public domain or available under a CC BY SA license. Therefore, uploading some of the available images to Wikimedia Commons would help to better illustrate Wikipedia articles and valorize the holdings of a cultural institution. Wikimedia CH has collected some of the resources under the respective page "Resources & Documentation" but you are invited to add additional ones in this collaborative project.
For Voluntary Community
- Voluntary contributors can participate by registering directly for the respective activity on the events page by following the links provided. Some events are organized by community members and some by Wikimedia CH or in collaboration with a GLAM or university.
- In every event we welcome participants who want to become Wikipedia authors or learn about other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons or Wikidata. We are happy to help you with the technical side and answer your questions about creating a user account, first steps working in Wikipedia, as well as sharing information about the writing style of an online encyclopedia and relevance criteria, as examples.
- We appreciate when more experienced Wikipedians and volunteer communities organize themselves to work on this topic independently and share their project and their work with us by adding it to the "Resources & Documentation" page. We would give your contribution additional visibility by publishing a little summary of your project via our communication channels or give you support wherever needed.
- Experienced Wikipedians can lead and organize their own activity and request the support of Wikimedia CH for contacts to existing partners if needed, communication of your event through our network and our channels, logistics and financials. You can apply for grants by following this link or contact Wikimedia CH directly by mail. If your grant application is accepted, you would need to stay in touch with us, set-up an outreach dashboard and share some highlights and results with us.
For GLAM Institutions & like-minded Organizations
- Memory Institutions are important partners for us, since they hold and preserve our cultural heritage. As the largest and most accepted online encyclopedia in the world, we have the mission to provide reliable knowledge and sources. Therefore, GLAM institutions and like-minded Organizations can add value to the Wikimedia projects by donating digitized collections, as an example, which are in public domain or by liberating them under a Creative Commons shared alike (CC BY SA) license. In return the collections will be valorized not only in Switzerland but in the world, views and traffic on the institution's website and web archives will increase substantially.
- By donating digitized media collections a Memory Institution will have access to our GLAM Statistical Tool called "Cassandra". Wikimedia CH will configure an open access account, in order for the GLAM to have in-depth statistics about the usage and views of their media files through all the Wikimedia projects.

- A GLAM Institution or like-minded Organization can open their doors to get in contact with the volunteer community and give access to information, materials, books, archival holdings in order for them to research and contribute to the Wikimedia projects accordingly. Together we can concept an online, hybrid or in-person event that fits your needs. An institution can also request support from Wikimedia CH and apply for grants by following this link or contact us directly.
