Wikimedia experience.
The candidate is a dedicated contributor to the Wikimedia movement. Eligible contributions include: contributions to the Wikimedia projects, membership in a Wikimedia organization or affiliate, activities as a Wikimedia movement organizer, or participation with a Wikimedia movement ally organization.
YES +10 years I have been a Wikimedian since 2006. I have served as an admin, ombudsman, Affiliate founder and lead, and Movement Strategy Working Group member. During 10 years I conducted +300 physical events in my country, represented my affiliate in the media and visited 20 states of my country promoting the Wikimedia Movement. I organized and advised Iberoconf regional meetings in all its history and led the second Wikimania in Latin America in 2015. I also have a permanent support to colleague wikimedians in my regions supporting new affiliations and activities in order to promote Wikimedia mission in Latin America. I am also a former member of the Grant Advisory Committee and I’m currently a member of Conference Grants committee.
Board experience.
The candidate has served on the board of trustees/directors or other similar governing body of a nationally- or globally-focused organization (non-profit, for-profit, or governmental).
YES +8 years. I served as a part of the Wikimedia Mexico board from 2010 to 2018. Since 2018 I've been the manager of the Creative Commons Mexico chapter.
Executive experience.
The candidate has worked at an executive level for an organization, department, or project of comparable (or greater) size, complexity, and scope to the Wikimedia Foundation.
YES +3 years. I worked for 3 years at a large marketing and events company in Mexico that managed large US million budgets where I was in charge of the creative proposal of large-scale shows. I was also in charge of a Wikimania in my country, the largest meeting of our movement, an occasion in which I was able to work with the Wikimedia Foundation staff and other volunteers on many aspects, including the efficient spending of donor funds in all the subjects of the event. In my current job, although I do not handle large-scale budgets, I work with processes and methodologies that require executive and management skills typical of an organization that frequently works with international organizations.
Subject matter expertise.
The candidate has worked or significantly volunteered in an area relevant to the work of the Foundation and the Board. Such areas will be determined on an annual basis and may include areas such as Global movement building and community organization, enterprise-level platform technology and/or product development, public policy and the law, knowledge sector (e.g., academia/GLAM/education), human rights and social justice, open Internet/free and open source software, organizational strategy and management, finance and financial oversight, non-profit fundraising, human resources, board governance.
YES +10 years. In my previous role as leader of Wikimedia México I was involved in the coordination of activities regarding GLAM, Education, Gender Gap, and other key movement topics. Regarding Public policy and law related work I have organized and supported resistance actions against different threats to the Wikimedia movement in my country and Latin America, such as SOPA’s local version, Ley Doring, or the recent Ni censura ni candados project in México. I also took part in the movement that fought to protect Net Neutrality in Mexico. In my professional work I have taken part in various events and discussions on policies having to do with internet and human rights, including experiences on the human rights approach with big tech companies. Building on that experience, I was invited to participate as part of the Universal Code of Conduct Drafting Committee, where I supported the incorporation of a Diversity and Human Rights framework.

Diversity: Background
The candidate belongs or belonged to a group that has faced historical discrimination and underrepresentation in structures of power (related to, for example, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, LGBTQ+ identity, social class, economic status, or caste).
YES. I am a racialized person in my country because of my skin color and because I belong to a lower social class, which is why I have had to work twice as hard as other people do. That is the reason why I am an advocate of public education, since it allowed me to be able to get a grade in History in a prestigious institution such as National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Diversity: Geography
The candidate would contribute to the overall geographic diversity of the Board of Trustees, based on the geographic regions where they have lived.
YES. As I explained, I had to work from a very young age since my family comes from a low-mid class, so I never lived outside of Mexico, for example, to pursue an academic career. What I have learned over ten years of experience in the Wikimedia movement is to have an open spirit to meet and respect colleagues from all countries where Wikimedia exists. The movement has compensated for my lack of experience of living outside my country by consolidating links with many Wikimedians from around the world. I did this by having a permanent and sensitive sense of the way other people speak, feel and think. Of course I will continue to do so if I have the opportunity to serve on the Board.
Diversity: Language
The candidate is a native speaker of a language other than English.
Spanish is my native. ES (N); EN (3) NAH (1). I am also a frequent translator of Wikipedia articles to English, Catalan and Portuguese using automatic machines.
Diversity: Political system experience
The candidate has substantial experience living in and/or working to share knowledge in a non-democratic, state-censoring, or repressive context.
YES. I grew up in a country where there was no real democracy until 2000 due to the tyranny of a single party regime. Our democracy remains very weak, even in 2012 we suffered from large-scale electoral fraud. For that reason I have been an activist since 1999 when I actively joined a student movement at my university in defense of public education. From that date until now I have integrated a number of collectives, groups and social movements. Since 2017 I have been strongly involved in the defense of the Right to housing, an area in which I have worked on political strategy, communication and popular resistance with victims of the 2017 Puebla earthquake.
