Wikimedia Indonesia/Wikistories for Community Report
Outcomes and Impact
editWikimedia Indonesia integrated the Community Development & Support program with the Wikistories campaign. When visiting the communities in Indonesia, we introduced the Wikistories feature to the community members. As of July 2022, we had 14 local Wikimedia communities in Indonesia. They were the target for the Wikistories campaign. We organized both offline and online events to reach the community members. The Wikistories campaign ran according to the initial plan. We managed five offline workshops, one online workshop, Instagram live session, and a giveaway activity. Below are the details for the activities.
Online activities
- July 4, 2022: Published the Wikistories landing page in Meta.
- July 8, 2022: An Instagram live session introducing the Wikistories
- November 4, 2022: Online workshop introducing Wikistories (10 participants).
- December 26-30: Giveaway for participants who created Wikistories (7 participants).
Offline activities
We invited the community members to attend the Wikistories workshop. The participants were existing contributors in the Wikimedia project.

Learning and next steps
editWe have learned that not all community members accepted the Wikistories implementation in Indonesian Wikipedia. On the other hand, some community members appreciated that we involved them in the research session. However, they thought we should discuss or elaborate more with them regarding the Wikistories initial release.
When we organized workshops in 5 cities, we asked participants to fill out a survey at the end of the event. The survey results show that they like three things:
- General ease and simplicity
- The use of images and attractive appearance of the format
- A positive impact on the reader's experience
However, they also considered Wikistories challenging to use because of the limited image editing options, difficulty finding images, and the confusing process. Some of the confusion could be contributed to the fact that Wikistories are still a beta feature and require manual activation.
The Inuka team made an opinion request to permanently deploy Wikistories in Indonesian Wikipedia on October 5, 2022. The opinion request was open for two weeks (October 5–19). Unfortunately, there was still disagreement about the proposal. So, the community brought the proposal to the voting process. The voting process was open for two weeks (October 19–November 1). Based on the vote count results, the agreed votes did not reach 2/3. So, the proposal was declared not accepted by the Indonesian language Wikipedia community. Currently, the Inuka team invites community members to develop policies and guidelines for the Wikistories feature.
Financial documentation
editWikimedia Indonesia has a budget for community programs from the General Support Fund 2022-2023. So, we did not request a separate grant to socialize Wikistories to the communities in Indonesia. Instead, we will provide financial documentation through the General Support Fund report.
