The WikiDienstag (“WikiTuesday“) is a weekly meet-up in the WMAT office. Volunteers share their knowledge and work together on improving the content of Wikimedia projects.

Wartungsbausteinwettbewerb Winter 2016

The "Wartungsbausteinwettbewerb" is a contest for removing cleanup templates in the German-language Wikipedia. It is held four times a year. WMAT supports the contest by donating prizes, e. g. "Wartungsbausteinwettbewerb" shirts designed especially for the competition. The Winter 2016 edition had 45 participants who edited in teams or by themselves. The competition resulted in 1413 improved Wikipedia articles.

Wikiversity: War and Propaganda until WWI

As last year, Wikimedia was again part of a University of Vienna course by Prof. Friedrich Schipper on war and propaganda until the World War I. The course lasted from October 2015 to February 2016. 19 (68 %) of the 28 students were female and 9 (32 %) male. Their term papers were Wikipedia-style articles on Wikiversity. Their works were supervised by 17 experienced Wikipedians as online tutors who also helped with transferring the best articles (or parts of it) to the German-language Wikipedia, e.g. Der Kaiser bei unseren türkischen Verbündeten about a German propaganda film from 1917 and Die Muskete about national stereotypes in an Austrian weekly journal during World War I.

Open GLAM workshop (Vernetzte Welten Conference)

OpenGLAM workshop Graz 2016 in the context of the "Vernetzte Welten" Conference

Together with Beat Estermann and Sylvia Petrovic-Majer from the international OpenGLAM working group (openglam.org) of the Open Knowledge Foundation, Wikimedia Österreich's Executive Director Claudia Garád hosted a GLAM workshop in the context of this year's "Vernetzte Welten" conference on digital libraries in Graz, Austria. The event is an annual gathering of digitalization experts from the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) and organized as a cooperation between the University of Graz and Europeana Local Österreich. The workshop comprised two parts: Firstly, lightning talks about GLAM activities in Europe in general, and concrete projects and activities in Switzerland and Austria in particular - from mass uploads, over Wikipedians in Residence, to Hackathons, and Edit-a-thons. Secondly, an interactive session designed to foster exchange between the approximately 20 participants on the chances and challenges of Open GLAM activities in their institutions.

The workshop was not only a great networking opportunity but also provided fresh impetus for GLAM activities in Austria and the DACH region. For the next edition of the conference in 2017 we plan a combination with a meeting of the international OpenGLAM working group in Graz.
