editWikidata
editWe have Wikidata access now and are about to change our Infobox, Quickbar and Geo templates to use information from Wikidata (capital, flag, coat of arms, coordinates, WP-Link, Commons Link ......) So the templates should be emtied in the articles. One problem is longitude and latitude information. We should kick them from the article because it comes from WD. But the dynamic map on the association's server works with the coordinates in the article. I think, intermediate-term we should rewrite the script using an WD-API (hope its available) the provide the article overview. -- DerFussi 06:50, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
We should drive the VCard/Listing thing forward on WD. I am still convinced, that this is very important and useful. We should collaborate with the tech guys at WMF to provide an easy way to edit them on WD. So IMHO your self made JS listing editor is not the best solution for that. But I am not the person who can answer that. We still use the form editor that is part of the wiki gadgets to edit the listings. Going to ask the community what they think about the listing editor. -- DerFussi 06:50, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- The listing editor can be converted to edit Wikidata listings, and in fact I'm open to moving listings to Wikidata. Basically right now the listing editor uses the Wikivoyage API to insert/edit listings, and it can be switched to the Wikidata API instead. So users will stay on Wikivoyage and won't even know that they are editing Wikidata. I think that sending them over to Wikidata will just be confusing, since it already seems confusing for regular editors. Of course, the Wikidata people will be more familiar with how to implement such things, and it also serves as a good base of what a Wikivoyage listing interface should look like. So don't worry too much about the listing editor stopping Wikidata from being implemented, it can always be adapted and improved. -- torty3 (talk) 09:47, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, good. Thanks for the explanation. -- DerFussi 10:29, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- Are Wikivoyage and Wikidata using the same licence, if not having the user contributing to Wikidata "without knowing it" (i.e. without any warning about the different licence there) is not correct. Something to keep in mind. Amqui (talk) 22:04, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- Potentially a concern, although IMO nothing that resides on Wikidata is really copyrightable; it's all just facts. I do note that WD has imported a lot of data from Wikipedia, despite the different licenses. LtPowers (talk) 23:00, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Social Media
edit- 322 likes on Facebook, growing, but slowly
- 55 on Google+
- We don't have a German Twitter site yet.

The wiki
editWe have established the 5 article status classes like on en:. We use a template at the bottom and an icon on the top right corner to display it (it looks like a WiFi sign. This should make the articles more comparable between the language version. End of month i am going to update the location database there where no updates recently due to some changes in the MW-API I have to rewrite my robot. There is a new idea to find articles of the month. Now we suggest just the next month articles but we consider to work like the en: community using a long term planning. -- DerFussi 06:50, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
Meta namespace
editThere is still some clean up needed (old rules from WT). Maybe I am going to kick some of the articles to get rid of the WT links and attribution. And a new community portal will be established. -- DerFussi 06:50, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
Travel topics
editWe have two discussions related to travel topics. One started with articles about German Highways, if needed and how to put information about sights, and restaurants along the street to the article. 1. putting the listing into the topic article (redundant listings) or 2. always linking to the town/village article (no redundant listings). Wikidata would solve this problem. That's why I am begging to have them on WD. At the end we decided to allow copied listings in the topic article (due to attribution mostly without the description, but some users dropped a message on ther user site, that they allow the copy by other users). -- DerFussi 06:50, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
There is another discussion about travel topics. One user wrote two articles about former german Chancellors, their work and buildings in Germany that have a relation the them and memorials and so on... Not everybody is convinced that we should have something like that. -- DerFussi 06:50, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- Stefan, could you provide links to these articles? I am curious... --Alexander (talk) 10:05, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- Of course: Konrad Adenauer and Willy Brandt ... and the deleting dicussion ... I would keep them. As long they are no stubs decaying in the wiki for years. I always vote for diversity. -- DerFussi 10:28, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- Something we've found useful on :en: is renaming such articles to make it clearer that they're about the related sights and sites, rather than about the persons themselves. For example, "Konrad Adenauer Tour" or even "Tour durch Orte im Zusammenhang mit Konrad Adenauer", if you don't mind longer titles. =) LtPowers (talk) 14:30, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

As our usual ambassador Peter is away at present, I've plunged forward and written this month's submission for the League of (language) Variations. I'm sorry if it's rather less eloquent than usual; normal service will be resumed next month.
Wikidata
editAs with the other languages, EN has been implementing and discussing the myriad uses of Wikidata's information. Our friends there have been extremely helpful in getting us up-to-speed and much of the site's information is now pulled from there.
- Could you may be expand a bit on this point, what are you using specifically from Wikidata?--Ymblanter (talk) 07:40, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in getting back to you! I must confess, I'm not overly familiar with this aspect of WV, although I do know that we currently use it for inter-wiki links, whilst using it for listings has also been mooted,. Does anyone else know more about how we use it? --Nick talk 01:34, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- I'm under the impression that our editors are trying to get the interwiki links straightened out before moving onto data. --Rschen7754 03:28, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Co-ordinates
editWith the rediscovery of voy:Special:Nearby and WV's increased popularity with app creators, the importance of accurate co-ordinates for our articles (and increasingly the facilities mentioned within) has increased dramatically. Thanks to the maps that have been developed by the WV Thematic Org, it's now easier than ever to see just where on Earth the destinations we cover are.
Social Media
editBoth WV's Twitter feed and Facebook page have seen some growth over the last month: the former to 192 followers and the latter to 141 likes. Neither has quite seen the enormous, exponential growth that we'd all have liked, but hopefully things will improve. Our Twitter account's efficacy has been boosted by the other WMF's feeds 'retweeting' our content and the new logo, which garnered several responses. Once again, if you'd like to say anything 'tweeted' by the WV account, please post here.
I'm sure I've missed a lot of new and exciting things so, if you're acquainted with EN, please feel free to add them below! --Nick talk 23:33, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
Listing editor
editThe listing editor is implemented and all old XML format are converted to Listing template. We still have a bug with the space in the listing template: Se loger. but the main problem is than only a few articles were using XML format, and even now that are implemented listings editor, just a few contributors use the appropriate templates and it will demand a lot of work to transform non-formated information to listings.--Adehertogh (talk) 08:09, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Banners
editThe template banner was added by bot on all pages. Thanks to the commons category property on WD, banners are used to generate the link to commons. The manual link was removed by bot. The double title bug is still not solve (implementation hidded the geo coordinates on the top right). More than 50% of the articles uses a specific image banner thanks mainly to one contributor. In the right top croner of the banners it'possible to add a symbol if the destination has a label as UNESCO, one of the most beautiful village of France (example:Mont Saint-Michel).--Adehertogh (talk) 08:09, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Quickbars
editQuickbar country (Info Pays) template use a few parametres from WD as capital, flag, phone prefix or top-level domain. The Quickbar includes geo template which is not take in the georeferenced articles map and on the nearest destinations on dynamic maps this should be solve in the futur by Mey2008, he wrote. Those template are used on 227 country articles, 129 region articles and 277 city articles so around 25% of the articles. --Adehertogh (talk) 08:09, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Comunity
editThe community seems to be stable with around 100 active contributors in the last 30 days but only 3 contributors have more than 100 edits. The local pub was this mouth quite busy with 30 new topics. --Adehertogh (talk) 08:09, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Import from WP
editIt seems that there are a few users would like to enable the import tool to import some informations from wikipedia with the autors credit.--Adehertogh (talk) 08:09, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- You can apply for the import right for the WP:fr > WV:fr transwiki import. You can apply here.... -- DerFussi 08:50, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- But you need approval from the community typically, and the import sources defined, if I am not mistaken. --Rschen7754 03:29, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
Let me give an update on the themes discussed on the Italian report of the previous summit plus some relevant news.
- What has been done
- Other Lua modules have been implemented, the most relevant is the one related to wikidata that allow us to pick up information from wd in order to integrate them in our articles.
- We have started the integration of wikidata information inside the various Quickbar to automate their creation. This will allow us to update information directly inside wikidata instead of wikivoyage to spread and amplify the benefit of our effort to all the wikis (clearly we'll receive the same benefit from the other's wiki effort).
- Modification of Quickfooter in order to link wp and commons based on the information stored on wd. Similar modification has been made on wp to link directly voy.
- A customized version of Listing editor for it:voy has been implemented. Many thanks to Torty3 for his very kind and essential support. Some customization for it:voy and a troubleshooting for JS errors are still needed, however currently it's working pretty well. We have also created a specific filter to track all the changes made by this tool, to recover them in a quick way.
- High coverage level (~93%) of the Quickbar within the articles.
- Implementation of the QuickbarPark to all the park related articles.
- A second expedition has been created. I hope that soon more will follow in order to better structure/organize/formalize our main activities.
- We have discussed about the districts nomenclature (mentioned last month) and we have decided to rename all these articles with more verbose/clear/wiki-usable names in order to harmonize them within it:voy and within all the wiki-projects. A dozen has been already renamed (that means: rephrase article text, adjust wikidata iw, delete old/wrong categories, create new/better categories, correct the references in the other articles, etc.. not just the rename of a page :-) ).
- Deleted ~900 categories associated to relevant "skeleton articles" that in the past has been deleted but not in a proper way (i.e. forgetting to delete as well the category).
- What's going on
- District renaming today ~100 district articles need a renaming activity to complete this cleaning task.
- Pagebanner importing activity is almost finished, this means that all the it:voy article that has a corresponding article on en:voy with a banner, has a banner too (not necessarely the same). The creation activity is still in progress, and according to the above mentioned expedition two people have already joined (for us is a great success :-)).
- Quickbar image: notwithstanding two fators: 1) we have created several brand new articles 2) we have added the proper Quickbar to most of the existing articles that do not have it (increasing the "base population"); we have kept the ~90% of completenes of this task. Currently less than 50 articles miss a proper Quickbar.
- Regionlist template implementation has been formalized as an expedition (as mentioned above). It's coverage for the country is quite high (~80%) while for the region is still low (~10%), however is in progress.
- Finalization of the QuickbarArch related to the archeological site.
- Elimination of the wt credit tag link from the smaller articles. In it:voy, differently from several other interlingual versions, are not allowed the skeleton articles, because it would have a bad impact both on viewer's perception and potentiallu on search enginge ranking; so the smaller article are the one with very few information on it and most of the times, almost identical to the wt one. In these cases I'm rewriting the article from scratch adding information from it:w/en:w and in some cases from other sources. I manage the credits of the source by the object of the change instead of the credit extension tool.
- (On the other hand) Importing of the best it:wt article currently missing on it:voy appling the credit approach expressed above.
- What's next
- Cleaning is still the top priority because there's a lot of work that must be done in order to harmonized the content of the various articles.
- Policy and template manual implementation: slow progress on this point.
- Implement more dedicated Quickbar for example for Dependences, etc.. to better describe the toponym in the article.
- As anticipated last month, we are preparing a "festival page" to migrate "not encyclopedic turistic information" from it:w to it:voy. Within a month we should be able to start.
- Once the smaller article will be purged by the wt credit tag link, for the longer ones we'll try to find a way to solve the "issue" modifying the extension.
- Vision
- In Wikimania I've contacted also the VisualEditor team in order to implement, not the full editor, but just the listing popup editor. It's technically feasible and should be enough easy to maintain once implemented. Current Listing Editor it's fine and it's working pretty well, but maybe to have a standard tool would be a better solution also (but not only) because it should have a higher support by the greater-wiki community.
- POI interactive map no progress on this point. Currently it's not a priority, although it's something that for sure will be implemented.
- Plain listing converstion into tempalte listing. Currently I'm classifying it as a vision because it's something too big for our current community effort to be started soon. I hope that the tool that en:voy is developing could be used on it:voy too to speed up these stuff.
Summer has passed, and all of us seem to be very busy with our regular off-site work. Therefore, I don't have much to say about Russian Wikivoyage. The introduction of page banners and the cleanup of empty articles are in progress and, apparently, will last for months and years=) We have introduced the automatic numbering of listings. It is a very important development that largely simplifies the editing. However, my expectations regarding the listings editor are bleak. Cyrillic letters and Russian field names poorly fit into the existing format of the editor. It will be a lot of work to adjust everything and include new template fields that are not used by other language versions. If anyone is willing to help with this, please, let us know.
Another request to the community is probably more simple. Some of our page banners (for example, here) show the TOC sticking to the left of the banner and leaving no margin. This does not look nice, but I don't understand how to fix it. --Alexander (talk) 14:31, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- With respect to the lack of margin, we had that problem on en: too. It happens on pages without third-level headings, for some weird reason. We fixed it by adding this to our Mediawiki:Common.css page:
#toc > tbody > tr > td > ul, #toc > tr > td > ul { padding-left: 2em; }
- See this discussion. Texugo (talk) 15:17, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, we have this code already, but it does not seem to help. Any other ideas? --Alexander (talk) 16:40, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- Try with
#toc > ul {padding-left: 2em;}
- It should be equivalent tho the JS $("#toc ul").css("padding-left", "2em"); that I've just used to make it work. --Andyrom75 (talk) 22:28, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you! It worked! --Alexander (talk) 11:59, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- For the listing editor, the appearance can be adjusted with the CSS, which both fr.voy and it.voy needed . The new template fields can just be added to allFields, and you'll just have a very big form. See voy:he:ויקימסע:עורך_הרשימות for non-Latin example. I'm a bit swamped at the moment for support, so it might be a while. -- torty3 (talk) 13:15, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you! My first problem is that your listing editor looks weird in Opera, which I use most of the time, but I keep forgetting to report this. Anyway, this thing is not my first priority, so I would be grateful if you could look at it at some point of time. --Alexander (talk) 16:05, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

- May be to add that we are spending quite some time now trying to define the strategy (for example, prioritizing article-related tasks), tryig to improve region articles, and bringing templates in order. In particular, we have now implemented custom pagebanners at all pages where these pagebanners were available.--Ymblanter (talk) 21:10, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Our (my) achievements this month:
- {{geo}} - After using a script to read coordinate data from wikidata and write it into geo templates in our articles, coverage with geographical coordinates is up from 25% to 88%, with only 389 destination articles remaining.
- The geo template, already implemented in every article whether its coordinates are filled in or not, now uses wikidata coordinates by default if no coordinates are written directly in the article. If doing so, it puts the articles into a maintenance category so the situation can be corrected. This category has currently been reduced to 0 items.
- The geo template now puts region/country/huge city articles without the zoom attribute defined into a category so they can be easily found and corrected
- sister sites - Links to wikipedia and commons have been automated with a sister site template implemented in all articles which automatically uses the links listed in the corresponding wikidata item. Manual wikipedia and commons links which duplicate what's listed in wikidata are being removed manually (so far at least).
- The template has override attributes wp= and commons= for special cases
- Articles which have no wikipedia link in their wikidata item are put into a maintenance category so we can consider whether they a) are linked to the wrong item, or b) need to have a special-case link to a different WP page
- unconnected or misconnected items - Main namespace pages in Special:UnconnectedPages have been reduced to zero, so every article is connected to a wikidata item. The new "sister sites" template above has been set so that non-disambiguation pages associated with an item identified as a disambiguation are put into a category so the association can be corrected to the correct topic instead of the disambig. The number of pages in this category has been reduced to 1, which is only a case where the corresponding disambig on wikipedia has been identified as needing to be expanded into a topic article and thus should not actually be a disambiguation.
- pages with style problems - Category:Articles with style problems has been reduced from 84 to... 79. Well, it's something at least.
- typos - AutoWikiBrowser/Typos has been imported from wp:pt: and has been run on approximately half the articles so far.
Other than what I have done, contributions have been extremely sporadic, with a couple of article creations and a handful of other valid edits. Both the other admin and the other most active contributor have checked in only once each over the last 10 weeks or so, but made no substantial contributions. My proposal to join other versions in implementing pagebanners has sat without comment for the three weeks or so since I posted it. I plan to move forward with it soon unless someone objects. In comments for last month's report, the international community here seemed to support my doing so. Any additional commentary in this regard would be appreciated.
Goals: In addition to some ongoing projects (geo implementation, zoom, listing conversion, etc.), and the likelihood of moving forward with implementing pagebanners, I also hope to look into the situation with links from wp:pt:. Though they have templates to provide such links, my suspicion is that links to WV from there are few. Now with wikidata in place, it should be pretty easy to track down what's missing in an automated way, so I plan to get lots more links from WP in the hope that it will bring in a few contributors. As always, I welcome any comments/suggestions. Texugo (talk) 23:18, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
Good news from the Spanish Wikivoyage. We have done a lot of progress this month with regards to several things that we had in the list:
- A bugs page was created (Wikiviajes:Bugs) to keep track of all the bugs we need.
- An inactivity policy for bots is being discussed now, with a proposed 6 months of no editing before the bot flag is removed.
- The Manual of Style discussions are going smoothly. The set of templates presented previously have been broken up and two of them have been approved unanimously (those being
{{País-top}}
and{{Otros destinos}}
) and are now being implemented on all country articles currently present on the wiki. More discussions regarding other aspects of the commopn style our articles would follow is still on the planning and drafting phase, but I am very happy that we are one step close to our goal.- On a side (but important) note, we have established direct links with sister projects through the -top templates, which shows links to both Wikipedia, Commons and Wikinews by default. We have also been working on using images as a primary resource to our articles. Apart from that, we have designed and approved (long ago but didn't mention it before) our assessment process for destinations: good and featured. To reach such status, our best works go through a community review to approve or deny such status. I think it is an incentive to improve our content. An example of a featured article is Cumaná.
- We have successfully implemented phase one of Wikidata, and are on route to move completely to phase two. For example, the país-top template uses Wikidata as optional (per local consensus) but is enabled to get the resources from there directly if needed—one of the benefits of being a sysop and editor on both sites ;-)
However, since this was our month of vacations, not much progress was done. We still have a lot of stuff waiting on the list but it should be all very well moving by the end of the year. A redesign of the Main Page is also on the list, as well as a version of país-top for cities ({{Ciudad-top}}
, not finished yet) and more. I am very excited with how we are moving forward, and although I recognize that we still have a long way for improvement. Cheers. — ΛΧΣ21 05:10, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
