CentralNotice/Request

(Please add your request to CentralNotice/Request#Queued requests. This list is automatically updated every day.)

Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 14 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the new 2024 usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [7 days]
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : Approval/rejection
Step #8 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)
Step #9 : Campaign enabled

Hi everyone! Just a quick FYI, I’ve requested the banner dates for one month, as we've done in previous years where the banner typically ran for the full month. Would it be okay to do the same this time? Since it’s for the whole month, I assume we can go with a lower rate as well. Thanks! --Carla Toro (WMCL) (talk) 20:29, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • @EPorto (WMB): Am I assuming right that you don't use the local SiteNotice because this cannot process CSS as requested? Usually, targeting one project should be handled locally. Furthermore, this was requested as an unusually long campaign, even without a country limitation where I would have expected Brazil only, as far as I can see. Why is this intensive use of CentralNotice needed and what kind of cycles do you have in mind the banners should be shown during that long time? And where was this announced locally? I cannot even find it in your grant request. — Thanks for preparing the banner code which looks good to me. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:19, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've just linked first banner, for Eugene, OR, for review. We (Wiki Education) want to use the same design with adjusted colors, image and text for the two other locations as well. I've used the JavaScript geotargeting strategy from campaigns like Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/Wikicurious_launch to limit the banner as narrowly as possible to the college town of Eugene.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk)

Hi,

I am not sure if you are running this for both logged in and logged out users but just to let you know, that there will be fundraising banners in Brazil until the 15th of April for logged out users. This would mean that logged out users will only see your banner after they have seen their max impression of fundraising banners. Since this is the second half of the fundraising campaign, many users might already be at the max impression for fundraising banners and hopefully will see mainly your banners. Hi @User:Lilian Viana, I created the banner for you from the source code in your link, so you can start testing if it looks okay across all devices. This is the preview you can use for that. Please let me know in case there are any updates needed. Ciell (talk) 10:09, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have slightly reduced the logo size. It got pretty big, especially on a mobile screen. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:20, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @DerHexer and @Ciell. It's perfect. Best Lilian Viana (talk) 13:52, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, thanks User:Lilian Viana and DerHexer.
  • I have now also created the campaign with the technical settings for the banner; please review.
  • I have added both pt and pt-br language to be targeted, but am aware there are differences between these languages. Would you like to only target pt as requested, or also pt-br?
  • I notice from the landing page, you'll have a kick-off event on March 31st. Would you like the banner to start the day before April 1, so people might join you for that event?
  • After reviewing the landing page and the information given there, I think the campaign is best suited for logged in users only. When designing a landing page to activate non-registered visitors, often passive readers, the landing page should contain a very simple and actionable outline for the newcomers. Here that is not the case. I therefore propose the banner will only be shown to registered users (fyi @JBrungs).
Please let me know if the campaign is good to go, and when you have questions or things should be changed. Ciell (talk) 10:09, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Lilian Viana: As of now, the campaign targets all Portuguese speakers around the world on Portuguese Wikipedia, not only the ones living in Portuguese-speaking countries. Is there a specific reason why you intend to focus on these countries only? PS: The campaign still waits for your approval. :) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:48, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @DerHexer! Correct, the campaign focuses on Portuguese language speakers regardless of their country of origin. I approve the banner being presented. Do I need to make the approval in a specific location, or is it sufficient to inform you here? I apologize for my delay and the confusion; this process is new to me. Thank you a lot for all the patience Lilian Viana (talk) 13:32, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @JBrungs (WMF), Sorry for my delay. Please, include pt and pt-br .
If it's possibile we would like that non-registered visitors could see the banner. We are planning in-person activities in libraries, and the banner can help bring newcomers to these events and make librarians aware of and engaged in the campaign. If it's not possible, I understand. Again, I'm sorry about my delay. Thank you! Lilian Viana (talk) 13:28, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Description - The youngest of the Bengali Wikimedia projects "Bengali Wikiquote" had been progressing rather slowly since its launch in August 2022. However, that trend was broken by the Quote Competition held in April last year. Out of the 1,347 entries currently available on the project, 823 (61%) were created through this competition. The competition successfully attracted several new contributors, some of whom are now actively contributing to the project. Therefore, following last year's success, we are going to organize the competition again this year. We want a banner for this purpose.

@DerHexer, Johannnes89, and Martin Urbanec:, for you attention! Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 15:09, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Too late (just added to CNR yesterday), too long (six weeks, seriously?), a global campaign without ambassadors and without local communication, insufficient banner request with just a logo and no translated banner texts, and so on. I'm inclined to decline the request entirely but will take a closer look into it on the weekend, I'm on a train to the German AdminCon right now. In the meantime, you can already read CentralNotice/Usage guidelines. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:31, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @ZI Jony, we have several big campaigns requested to be run in the same time period, with overlapping targets with your campaign. I agree with DerHexer that 6 weeks exposure is not a suitable request. Also, is yours a writing or photography contest? Reading your grant request, and noticing your metrics are focusing on Wikipedia, Wikibooks and Wikivoyage, I would assume the former, and would like to propose to limit your CN campaign to those 3 projects, allowing more room for the Wiki Loves Africa photography contest CN campaign which will be running at the same time. And maybe we start light, and increase visibility (number of impressions) towards the end of the Ramadan for instance? Ciell (talk) 10:20, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
DerHexer and Ciell, Sorry for the late response! We really appreciate your suggestion. I'd suggest three times: in March, two times for one week each, and in April, during the last ten days of the campaign. I've updated the request page. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 16:22, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@ZI Jony: if you'd like this campaign to go live, we'll need a few more details to create the banner and the campaign.
  • Currently, the banner is only available in 5 languages and the landing page in 11. If you'd like to target 28 languages, please list them and make sure both banner and landing page is available in those languages.
  • Please note that creating, and during the competition: managing, separate campaigns for all 28 languages is a lot of work. Some CN admins do this for global campaigns, but these campaigns in general will have a dedicated person on the team for doing so. Since you have one central landing page already, my proposal would be to create a multilingual banner (the language shown in the banner will depend on the user's preferred MediaWiki interface language) to work with.
  • Please also make sure to read the CentralNotice/Usage_guidelines#Customizing_Banner_Code,_Design_and_Styling on the topic of custom banners, where it reads: "Banners are made with HTML and CSS, not Wikitext." We can take your design in wikicode and transform it, but it might end up looking a bit different from your design.

  • @J ansari, ZI Jony, and Ciell: I have created the campaign and multilingual banner (English preview, can be changed in the URL).
    • I have also transferred all current translations from User:J ansari/Sendbox/2 to the banner and marked them as published. However, I have only included these languages into the campaign settings, because I don't know what the other of the 26 languages might be. Furthermore, I have added a translation link into the banner itself. Please submit as many translations as possible to the banner here (there is no need to do that on the user subpage anymore) and landing page.
    • I can add more languages to the campaign at any time when you tell me which ones. For me, the campaign is ready to go, I have set the date for 10 to 16 March; let us know about the other dates.
  • All in all, please check everything, approve it and ping me so that I can enable it. — And please, next time start preparations earlier and reach out to CentralNotice admins as soon as possible. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:04, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer thanks for your work, please go ahead what you did looks good to me. Also, accommodate for March 24-30, and April 7-15. We will let you know if there are any concerns/updates from our end, and for the next time a central notice will be prepared and reached to the administrators in advance. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 05:14, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
DerHexer and Ciell, can we use language based local Wikipedia project page link? Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 06:20, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@ZI Jony: I have enabled the campaign, but be aware that the number of languages is limited because you didn't tell us the full list of 26 languages (and landing pages) yet. I have just noticed that the links are not leading to a global landing page which required translation. When you have individual landing pages on the local wikis, a translation of the landing page is not mandatory (but of course helpful). I have changed the banner accordingly. Please check it again. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:06, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
DerHexer, Instead of using {{{link}} can we use {{{link|//meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wiki_Loves_Ramadan_2025}}} (unsure that will work or not)? Our targeted languages (Arabic, Assamese, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Dagbani, English, Gujarati, Hausa, Hindi, Igbo, Indonesian, Kashmiri, Luganda, Malay, Simple English, Tamil, Turkish, Yoruba, Swahili, Dutch, Kannada, Malayalam, French, Ukrainian, Hebrew, Estonian) and countries (Algeria, Antarctica, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Estonia, France, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Libya, Malaysia, Maroc, Morocco, Netherlands, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Switzerland, Tanzania, Turkey, UAE, Uganda, Ukraine, United States, United Kingdom). Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 04:04, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@ZI Jony: The default language in the translatable banner is English whose link already is //meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wiki_Loves_Ramadan_2025. It will only be overwritten when there is another local link set in the translation. That equals your proposal. I have added the languages, the countries were already set. Please ping me the day before the campaign start so that I can check if I can publish new translations. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 09:37, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
DerHexer, for your attention to start the campaign from tomorrow. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 12:35, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @ZI Jony, have you consulted all these language communities on all 15 Wikimedia projects, and in all 26 projects, to ask if they agree with you running an banner on their projects - for logged in and anonymous users? And why are you targeting countries in Europe but leaving out multiple MENA countries and languages? I am afraid you have not thought this through, and are underestimating the impact this has on these communities - I for one cannot remember the Dutch Village Pumps receiving messages about this. Your local teams list is still limited, your translations of the landing page (12 languages) and banner text (11 languages) is as well. I oppose the banner going live like this. (fyi @DerHexer) Ciell (talk) 19:46, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I second Ciell's concerns about the missing communication, translations and lists. There is still a bit of time for preparations for the second and third campaign window. Please let us know when you have made progress with it. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:34, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ciell and DerHexer, before we start working for Wiki Loves Ramadan, we conducted an community engagement survey, and our targeted countries and Wikis' are a result of that survey! However, I would suggest to run only those languages which have translated (even one message/link), this translation done by local users, and some local Wikipedia project page I've added based on Wiki Loves Ramadan 2025/Participants and Wikidata item. I believe that creating local Wiki project page, and link to participants page and Wikidata item can be considered as community agreed for the campaign! Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 19:07, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell and @DerHexer for your attention! Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 17:23, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@ZI Jony I am still not convinced you consulted the online communities. Could you please provide me with the link to where you consulted with for instance the Dutch, French and Estonian communities of Wikipedia, Wikibooks and Wikivoyage? Ciell (talk) 18:35, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ciell and DerHexer, I have updated campaign duration and countries, hope there will be no concern from your end to proceed. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 11:41, 15 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have now enabled the campaign on a limited diet. However, your preparations for using the CN banner for your project really need to improve if you would like to run a banner again in a next iteration.
    • I have limited your campaign to Wikipedia, Wikibooks and Wikivoyage, along the lines of the projects mentioned in your grant request. Running the banner on 'all projects' would not be suitable, as your event mainly focuses on article creation.
    • The banner will not be shown to not-logged in visitors. Your landing page and the events are insufficiently effective for newcomers - many events don't even seem to be linked.
    • I have taken the countries mentioned on Wiki Loves Ramadan 2025/Participants, and checked them against the already available translations for the banner text. Only these will be targeted. In the case where there is a mention on the meta page but no local information is available (Hausa for instance), the language is not included.
When your are preparing your next campaign, please make sure to use outreach methods other than the CN banner to get local organizers active, before your event starts, and before you request the banner. CN banners are a way to powerful tool to serve multiple purposes, this deludes the call to action and makes the banner far less effective. Use social media, use mailing lists, use your personal network to get a great group of like-minded organizers together. Also, make sure you have an effective landing page: users that land on the page need to be addressed in their local language, and to find the place to go in one click. I would advice to outline an easy one-two-three step process for them to get active: make it very easy and inviting for them to join you in your effort.
    Wishing you a successful campaign, Ciell (talk) 09:30, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ciell, thank you for your wishes and suggestions that well noted. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 16:57, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pharos, I had to disable both campaigns that were live since yesterday for WCNA.

  • Per the phabricator:T388080 ticket, please ensure these and all of your future banners are compatible with the Mediawiki dark-mode settings.
  • Also, please make sure to specify the campaign type in the drop down in the campaign settings to allow people to filter through their preferences the types of campaigns they see.
  • Don't forget to list your campaign in the calendar and coordinate with others that might be targeting the same country/projects/languages. Currently the banner for International Women's Days is also running in the USA.

Best, Ciell (talk) 14:49, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, just noticed this now. I believe we've now addressed the issues that have been raised. Pharos (talk) 16:46, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell, @Pharos I'm sorry, but the new "dark-mode" supported banner has low contrast ratio (2.66:1) and fails WCAG 2.0 standard of at least 3:1 for web accessibility. The background grey has to brighten up to #CCCCC at the minimum to create sufficient contrast. OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:10, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Pharos has fixed the background colour, thank you. In the future, between a user preference (dark mode) and an accessibility requirement, accessibility requirement must take precedence. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:47, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Description - Call for participation to Wiki Loves Africa 2025.

The banner is to promote the Wiki Loves Africa photo campaign. It is a call for participation. It is pretty much unchanged compared to previous years. The contest is open for 2 months (by popular support). We run the banner only in Africa (though the contest is open everywhere). Every year, 90% or so of our participants are new (and some are retained there after !), so running the banner for IP addresses is very important as it serves as recruitment system for new participants. The contest runs over all African countries. In some countries (around 25), local teams will organize activities. They are very much in ask for the banners (both because it helps promote the contest in countries where wikipedia is not very well known) and because it makes them feel we take them seriously (and we do of course...). We changed the timeline just a tiny bit : 1 March 2025 → 30th April 2025

@Ciell and DerHexer: – this request now has the visuals for your banner creating pleasure! ;-) I hope I have uploaded all the elements in all the formats you need. Please, let me know if you have everything you need to get started on this. Thanks again for the supreme effort and support. Islahaddow (talk) 10:11, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Me again ... is there a way to measure how many hits the banners get? It would be good for us (and you guys) to see how much of our traffic comes through the central notice? Hope there is a simple answer. Thanks! Islahaddow (talk) 10:14, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Islahaddow, Ogalihillary, and Anthere: Please fill out the template at the top of the page first. Thanks in advance! Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:20, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just done so @DerHexer. Apologies. Did not know they had not been done. Islahaddow (talk) 10:21, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
March, that's good (sorry that I didn't know that at first place), and still some things needed for preparation. — I'm on my way to the w:en:Federal Network Agency for a VLOP stress test. But with that information I can prioritize it for the weekend, unless Ciell or anybody else wants to take it. ;) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:26, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell and DerHexer: Consider this a gentle nudge. Please let me know where you are with this and where we can support. We are less than 2 weeks away. Thanks again for your help with this. Islahaddow (talk) 10:52, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think that I will find some time for that on the weekend at the German AdminCon. Ciell also must feel annoyed that I don't respond to her banner question. ;D Four weekends in a row, last week Steward Conference, and so on. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:17, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working on this right now, but have to take a break at the German AdminCon now. — Please notice that there are three other global campaigns proposed for partly the same period: CentralNotice/Request/Wiki Loves Ramadan 2025, CentralNotice/Request/IWD 2025, CentralNotice/Request/Wikimania 2025 Program Proposals Application. Usually, it's on your end to find a good solution to avoid banner overkill. But Wiki Loves Africa is a long-established campaign so that it will get some kind of preference. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:51, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I responded most eleborative in the Wikimania Program Proposals one - balancing the IWD and WLA banners has in the past always been done by giving WLA the head start from March 1, and after a few days the IWD is enabled with more impressions, since it is up for only 6 days anyway.
I am sure we can fit in a third banner, I'll chime in where I can. Ciell (talk) 17:20, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ogalihillary, @Islahaddow, also a small remark: traditionally, we run WLA on Wikipedia/Commons/Wikivoyage, same as we do with WLM. Would that be sufficient for you for 2025 as well? Ciell (talk) 10:31, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Anthere, Ogalihillary, and Islahaddow: I have created the campaign and banner (desktop and mobile preview). Please note that in the mobile preview on a smartphone device, the WLA logo looks unexpected to me. Furthermore, the knobs (I don't know the English word) of the pieces puzzle between the center and left and right section look nice in the mockup but I am not capable of programming that into the banner. The given logos are not transparent either so that they could be put one on top of the other. If you need an improved version that looks closer to your mockup, please reach out to a designer yourself. For me, this version looks good enough to go. But please review everything, approve it and ping me so that I can enable the campaign with the recommendations of Ciell in mind. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:40, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Ciel :) Anthere (talk) 16:20, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @DerHexer you are a super star! I am happy for a flat (no knobs on either side) as long as there is more space round the logo. Is that possible? I can provide transparent versions of the logo if that would help? I have uploaded these options - do they make it easier to get the border around the logo and words?
Transparent logo for Central Notice banner
Transparent wording for Central Notice banner
let me know - and sorry for the delayed response. Islahaddow (talk) 15:09, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Islahaddow: I have changed the left logo but haven't changed the text—because it's a (translatable) text and not an image. ;) In all my previews there is enough space around the text. I would leave it as is. Are you okay with that? Then I could enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:39, 27 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Islahaddow, @Anthere: please be aware that your banner is not live since DerHexer is still waiting for a final confirmation on the last changes. :)
Also, note that you have not updated the languages listed for this request, which means that the banner currently will only run in English, French, Arabic and Portuguese. If you need more langueges (which I assume!), please name them one by one. Thanks! Ciell (talk) 08:40, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is perfect @DerHexer: please go live ... thank you so much and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Thanks to @Ciell too!! Islahaddow (talk) 08:56, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Islahaddow: I have enabled the campaign, but please note Ciell's comment on the missing languages. —DerHexer (Talk) 10:41, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Description - WMDE offers editors of Wikipedia a range of support. This includes but is not limited to trainings, funding for their own projects, organising of events and so on. This support is not known by quite a few volunteers of the German Wikipedia. With this campaign, we want to make people aware of the WMDE community portal. The community portal presents the different aspects of Wikimedia Deutschland's work

Depending on the targeting, users receive a different landing page. The banner, which is aimed at inexperienced users, refers to learning offers from both WMDE and the community. The banner for experienced users refers to a page in the community portal that presents the various training courses.

We hope that the WMDE Community Portal site will become more popular. It is therefore of interest to us that the “News” page in the portal in particular is observed by more users. We will also track whether the campaign has a (positive) influence on the editing behavior of users who we refer to as occasional editors. Hi @Merle von Wittich (WMDE), am I observing correctly you designed these two banners (linked above), but did not yet create the campaign(s)? Do you expect me to do that? Ciell (talk) 15:45, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ping @Merle von Wittich (WMDE)? Ciell (talk) 16:06, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Normally our FunTech Team can create those campaigns – I only need the approval of the campaign. Is this fine with you or would you prefer a different proceeding? Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 17:04, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All affiliates need a volunteer CN admin (like me), to sign off on their CentralNotice camapigns. A CentralNotice is the banner (front-end visual) + the campaign (technical settings): therefore, if your FunTech Team is going to create the campaigns themselves, I'd like to see the campaign and the technical settings before you enable. Ciell (talk) 17:53, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell I would not mind If you would create the campaign, but at the moment I am not sure if this is last approved version of the banners; to my understanding there have been some code changes after the first implementation. Therefore I am still waiting for this info. – So let me either get back to you either with the campaign settings of the FunTech Team or the go ahead, that you can create the campaign :) Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 07:47, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am not 'big' for coding: if you'd like a full review I can ask another CN admin to do that. But because you choose to run a customized banner it is your responsibility to test it across all platforms. I just want to see the final banner and the campaign settings - I can do this myself if you prefer, but might not have time available before the weekend. Ciell (talk) 15:43, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have no expectations that you will check the banners :) I realize that this is within our scope! - Unfortunately, I still don't know whether the current banners have been implemented. - At the moment I'm still hoping that WMDE/I will make progress here by 24.03. and that you can then release the campaign for the planned run (last minute).
With every hour that passes, I assume that we will have to postpone the campaign period.
Thank you very much for your work and availability despite the current situation. Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:43, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell
I have an update \o/:
I have now moved the start of the campaign back a day, so that ideally there will be less stress for you when it comes to the approval! Have a wonderful weekend! Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 15:44, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the updates, @Merle von Wittich (WMDE)! I have reviewed and enabled the campaign, the banner should go live tomorrow morning. Ciell (talk) 12:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! <3 Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:28, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Merle von Wittich (WMDE) one more question: I notice your fun-team has set up the campaign including a sample rate of 1 for legacy hiding and impressions. I have never come across a sample rate like this, and learned (the hard way) that WMF sometimes uses history logging samples at a rate of 0,01%. Is your team sure a sample rate of 1 makes sense, and does WMF agree with it being used like this? Ciell (talk) 13:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have to forward that question to @Kai Nissen (WMDE). Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:34, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Actually, this is something we set for all of the fundraising campaigns we run and it's part of the "muscle memory" when setting up the campaign. It dates back to a Central Notice introduction I received when I started working at WMDE in 2011. Thinking about it now, I'm sure we don't need to set a sampling rate at all, so I'll disable it. We measure banner interaction (and also banner display) using Event Platform. Kai Nissen (WMDE) (talk) 17:25, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining @Kai Nissen (WMDE)! Interesting that you received information about this during the onboarding almost 14 years ago: the Help:CentralNotice does not mention the 'special features' options, and I sometimes feel a bit in the dark on how the can be used. The small paragraph about banner history logging was only added recently. I'd love to learn more about this, if you ever have the time to write your experience down. I am sorry for the late request, we will do our best to request the next banners 14 days before as per the rules. We are currently discussing the possibility of my banner admin request to take WMCZ banners out of your hands. Best, --janbery (talk) 16:10, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannnes89: could you please check this again? best --Christian Philipp (WMAT) (talk) 10:57, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping @Christian Philipp (WMAT)! We appreciate if @Manfred Werner (WMAT) creates the campaign & banner via the CentralNotice interface, once Meta:Requests for CentralNotice adminship/Manfred Werner (WMAT) is successful. It just needs approval from volunteer CN admins per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Policies for Affiliates and WMF Staff, but can be created & managed by yourself.
Per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines campaigns running longer than two weeks usually require community approval. Even if this is an established campaign, the unusually long duration should be discussed with the de(-AT) community.
Personally I think the duration might be ok, if the banner is running on a low impression diet and with limited traffic, in order to make sure it doesn't annoy editors (and readers) again and again for many weeks... Johannnes89 (talk) 18:40, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannnes89: @Christian Philipp (WMAT): I have written a notification to the community on de.wikipedia for this banner and also for the second campaign in January (CentralNotice/Request/GLAM digital spring) at Wikipedia:Projektdiskussion. As I am new to this I am not sure how to ask for approval from volunteer CN admins (I could ping some from the list of admins, but I don't know who is active). --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 12:56, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. You can create both the banner as well as the campaign via the CN admin interface. Once you link the created campaign & banner on this page, volunteer CN admins can take a look. If no-one reacts, you can ping one of the active CN admins mentioned at CentralNotice/Request, preferably (or Ciell who is not on the list, but also active and very helpful as well). Johannnes89 (talk) 19:06, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the start date of the campaign in January from 1st to 7th, also talked about it with Christian. It's because I am on vacation around new year's eve and have very limited internet access in this time, so it would be difficult to act if there are issues with the banner or the campaign. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 13:22, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Manfred Werner (WMAT): Banner is activated, thanks. There was a problem last year with the banner conflicting with coordinates at the upper right corner of a page (difficult to see, not clickable), which I thought, I have fixed by adding some extra empty space below the banner. But obviously this does not work. Do you have a better idea to fix this? best --Christian Philipp (WMAT) (talk) 10:03, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The campaign settings have been set [5] and the banner created [6]. CN admins, please take a look and let me know if it is alright like this. It's the first time I created a CN. Thank you! --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 15:36, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Martin Urbanec:@Vermont: Hi, as I am new to this and also that kind of CN admin who is here in the role of a representative of an affiliate, I need and would like to ask you to take a look at the two campaigns I have set up - if they are alright (also technically, I am not sure about the close button here) and can be activated. Thank you! --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 17:37, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me. I don't see a close button in the CN interface preview for some reason, but it works in the onwiki preview [7].
Restarting the banner cycle every week effectively means users will see the banner 12 times which seems a bit much to me. I suggest either limiting it to two impressions per cycle (= 8 total impressions in 3,5 weeks) or extending the cycle a bit, e.g. to 67435200 seconds (1.5 weeks -> 9 total impressions). Johannnes89 (talk) 11:49, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I have reduced the maximum impressions to two.
So, I am just asking again because I am new to this, what should be done now? Will someone activate the campaign?
There is also another one I created that should have begun today, CentralNotice/Request/GLAM digital spring, but is still marked as open. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 16:46, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've activated the campaign, giving my approval as a volunteer CN admin.
I suggest trying to ping volunteer CN admins again for the GLAM request (those without ties to WMF or affiliates like WMDE). Perhaps checking the different CN logs [8] helps finding someone active. The backlog at CNR suggests, that most volunteer CN admins are currently busy, but given that it's just about approving the banner + campaign you created, there should be somebody who can spend 5 minutes to do that. We'd like to continue the campaign from last year (request). The banner will only be running for two days before the first Wednesday of each month, and will be targeted to users with less than 100 edits.

I can handle the administration of this banner myself, no intervention necessary from other CN admins. :-) Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 13:12, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
