Regarding Template:Contribute Literacy Revolution

Literacy Revolution Dear Wiki,

   Since 1984, I have worked and studied in the field of literacy.  15 years ago, I developed plans for a Children's Literacy Revolution, based on the highly-successful Cuban Literacy Campaign of 1961, and accomplished some feasibility programs in New Mexico.  Semi-retired, and given the reach of the internet, I now foment a Worldwide Literacy Revolution, and seek your assistance.
   After the problems of food, clothing, shelter, disease and belligerent egoists making war, illiteracy is the major roadblock to creating a much better world.  Literacy is a stepping-stone to solving many of those problems, and one that many, many volunteers can help their neighbors overcome.  So far, institutions devoted to eradicating illiteracy in the U.S. and most other countries have not succeeded. 
   Therefore, I propose a Wiki page to address an ongoing Literacy Revolution, with ideas, plans and suggestions from folks around the world.  Please begin such a page, let us seek feedback.  Literacyrev.com/

I use the website for information concerning my ancestors and also for biographical information on artists, writers, musicians, composers and also for researching medical information and information in sundry other areas.

I have found a few mistakes in the information posted on areas where I have a sure knowledge. I apologize for not taking the time to assess what steps I would have to take to enter information that is either conflicting or omitted from the information on the website. I will try to remedy that in the future.

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I've been using Wikipedia for YEARS (as most people have.) Don't you think it's time you guys started having Ads so you don't have to rely on begging people for money to keep your servers running? You guys can set the terms for Ads, such as not allowing scripts to be run to drastically reduce (or even eliminate) the odds of getting a virus/spyware from the Ads. You can control whether or not the ads is animated or whatever else you guys want. You're wikipedia, you can set all the terms and companies would be tripping over their own feet for the opportunity to advertise on wiki. Seriously, you guys are the new PBS, begging for money once a year to handle what could easily be handled internally without looking bad in front of your users, since begging doesn't look good in any situation.

You can do what you need to do to handle your business or you can sit in the corner like a bum/vet with a cup begging people for money, your call.

Regarding Home

The information about Judson Lincoln Transue is incorrect, his father was mayor of Flint, his name was Judson Legg Transue. Judson Lincoln worked for Genesee County. These men were my Great grand father and Grand father. Regarding Policies

Have Bernard Peiffer added to the alphabetical list of jazz pianists. Request that my book "Compendium of Over 2000 Jazz Pianists" by Arnie Fox be listed in various Wikipedia articles that pertain to "jazz pianists" . The book was written as a labor of love and certainly not to make money since it is a very specialized subject. The book took over 3 years to compile the data base of many unknown jazz pianists which would definitely enhance the knowledge of jazz enthusiasts. Don Glanden (former student of Bernard Peiffer) wrote the foreward. He wrote a biography of Peiffer and his article is in the wikipedia. Tom Lord who has a discography of all jazz albums and CD's also lists "Compendium of Over 2000 Jazz Pianists" as a reference book on jazz. This book would fill the gap of jazz pianists that Wikipedia lists but only scratches the surface of those artists listed in your alphabetical list. Princeton University also has the book in their Library.I would like to thank Wikipedia for their continuous effort in informing the public on the subject of jazz. Thank you for your consideration. I have added Bernard Peiffer to the list of jazz pianists. Note that you could have done this yourself! Anyone can edit Wikipedia. If you have time, you can register an account (account is optional) and read the tutorial. There is a "WikiProject" (coordination of various interested users) for jazz. You might like to join. You can add citations to that book by clicking the "edit" button, but I suggest you read the tutorial first.

We have a Jostaberry bush in our garden in the Moray coastal village of Cummingston. The bush provides an abundance of berries every year despite the leaves being desimated by catapillars early each season. We freeze the harvested fruit that is not consumed by birds but assure readers that there are many very sharp thorns protecting the fruit from wildlife, the reference above states that it is thornless!

I'm sorry, but that is original research and is not allowed on Wikipedia. See [2]. Quote: "Unlike Ribes divaricatum [North American coastal black gooseberry] and R. uvacrispa [gooseberry], R. × nidigrolaria [jostaberry] lacks thorns." If you can give a reliable source (not a blog, etc.) that says it has thorns, it can be changed. PiRSquared17 (talk) 06:16, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

More sources that may not be quite reliable, but are good for this issue:

• Colorado State University, Department of Horticulture: "The objective in developing the Jostaberry was [...] a thorn-free plant" (and yes, it says the objectives were met)
• National Gardening Association says it is thornless. Maybe your plant is really Orus 8 or a similar Ribes hybrid/cultivar?
• University of Idaho "The thornless canes of the jostaberry[...]"

The article I am reading on Lizzie Borden says it was updated on January 26, 2014 when in fact I am reading that on January 25, 2014. Now I feel like I can't fully trust the information on Wikipedia if you claim the article you produced has been updated on a day before the day got here. So, what's your explanation of that?

Wikimedia, like a lot of the computer world, uses UTC as a timezone. In Louisiana, it is January 25, but in the UTC timezone (based on GMT/Greenwich Mean Time), it is January 26. You are asking money from me but cant give you feedback easily, take several minutes to find this form, excuse mua! Cant support you and give you money, so many times information has been fraudulent, otherwise false, and very serious claims in ex. (mental)healthcare, which risk human lives, and other serious subject is archeology and history false information is (possible given) to manipulate, violate and harm ex. minorities life and health. So if I would take a part of your project it would mean hunting this information day by day fixing other peoples writings and translating it. Then there would be somebody who will be angry to me and fix true to false again and then I should fix it back, that dosent work. Who decides these things, you think you are some fu...information authority. This is helpful but have to keep all time in mind that people who are writing here are not highest top in their subject, and there should be warning sing BE SELECTIVE on what you read. So I think library at university is better than yours, sorry. Library is more trustful(printing media is more selective) and its free to everybody, other than internet what cost quite of money and keeps me behind outdoor inside at home other than library : )

I'm sorry that Wikipedia may appear to be very hostile that way to many people, but it is because it is not and never will be a completely indiscriminate collection of information about everything that can be, see Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not for details on this. The material there is subject to strict peer review about what is or is not acceptable as encyclopedic material according to a set of criteria, so a lot of stuff is excluded from Wikipedia even if it might exist. Perhaps you've run into some trouble fixing things people disagree with, which is also sadly a common occurrence that results in one side being blocked and leaving Wikipedia entirely. My suggestion would be to perhaps ask the relevant people advice about how best to reinstate your fix into something without causing someone else to be angry. I just want to say that Wiki is great system for open information exchange. This is one basic cornerstone of democracy. Personally I have has a lot of use of Wiki, when I'm commenting blog writings and news in internet. Very often I remember things in the past "about" , but not excatly. By using Wiki I can be sure of the detailed things of which I'm commenting. Wiki is very flexible to use. In our modern internet world the superiors of our countries, traditional media, politicans and other groups of their own intrests can't govern anymore the information which is given to the people.

Thank you for your comments. If you're interested in wikis, may I suggest a look at Wikipedia's list of wikis or some practice using the software yourself by downloading MediaWiki? It's the software that's used to run these websites, written in PHP, and it can be found at www.mediawiki.org, very supportive of the wiki model. thank you for the story about cemetery at Tev Aviv area; my grandmother is buried there. Someone had found grave for us earlier; but your story is the first I knew of its history. Bless you for what you do.

Regarding Terms of Use

(Forgive my boldness, but) I think the summary box at the top of the ToU page should be titled "Terms of Use summary", or "Summary of the Terms of Use", instead of "Termes of Use": a blue-framed box with inside it a big blue-highlighted title saying "Terms of Use" sends the signal that said box contains the Terms of Use, which is counter-productive in relation to the couple of disclaimers trying to warn against that very idea. The same goes for the translations.

Conversely (and less importantly), there is an additional disclaimer put before the box (on the English ToU page at least), which at first I thought was talking about the entire page, instead of only the box; this is because it is separated from the box and a bit vague about its subject ("This"). With the box title modified, I believe this additional disclaimer could simply be removed. But if it has to remain, then I suggest to place it inside the box; or closer to the border of the box, if it really is to remain outside.

Very disheartened to know how Wikifoundation works.Whats happening on wikipedia is totally unfair.It is ruled by some editors.This I came to know when I was doing editing for 'Saladin' page.I strongly felt the wrongful images showed on his page present the great 'Hero of Islam' in poor light.So I'd edited the page & put the new image with all the necessary right.But my image was removed again & again.This is totally unacceptable.Wiki doesn't have rules but has.If this is war then it is just started.

Almost :-). The lead sentence should end with "in calendar year 2014", not "in calendar year 2013." Also you've accidentally circularly categorized Category:DMCA 2014 into itself. Following the example of Category:DMCA 2013, it should be in categories [[Category:DMCA]] and [[Category:2014]]. If you are willing to go down the rabbit hole a bit, this leads to the issue that Category:2014 doesn't currently exist (but it can be created with content copied from Category:2013) and that Category:Press releases issued in 2014 doesn't currently exist (but it can be created with content copied from Category:Press releases issued in 2013). —RP88 06:53, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

I only want to say that YES, in my opinion, ANY [paid] WIKIPEDIA WRITER AND/OR EDITOR ABSOLUTELY MUST reveal any/all professional and/or commercial connections s/he may have that are at all pertinent to the information/editing provided. If the "information" provided by Wikipedia is in fact a [paid] contribution from say the Flat Earth Society, or the White Aryan Resistance--I as a Wikipedia user, jolly well want to know the source of the "information" I am reading. --Yes; my examples are silly and obvious--but you get my point: IF someone is being paid--whatever construct one may put on that word--to say certain words, present a particular take/slant on a topic--OF COURSE I the intellectually neutral reader, want to and should be able to know about that [paid] point of view. --Most people will "say" damn near anything, if paid, hired, or whatever, to do so.

Wikipedia image failures

Where and how do I question a problem with Wikipedia? What's wrong with a simple 'comments' or 'questions' link? Specifically, for several weeks the images (maps, graphics, photos, etc) have not been active, i.e. cannot be magnified or a larger format found (links go to a dead page with the name of an image file but no image). This was not a problem in the past……What changed? It is especially frustrating when it involves tiny text in graphics! It is not my device or software, for I use a Verizon cell phone and a Kindle Fire HD……or is it that both work on Android systems?

I guess you mean the map that leads to this page. This project tries to bring Wikipedia to people around the world. 1. At this time a user who logs into one site is also logged into its sister sites.

2. On Wikipedia, when a user logs-in they are notified of unread messages on their talk page.

Proposal: that a method/program be developed/implemented whereby any user with multiple-site access be notified of any unread messages on their "talk" pages on ALL sister sites, regardless of which site they log-in on.

Rational: many users tend to use one or two sites on a regular basis and are involved in others rarely. When there is no immediate reason to visit a particular site, messages on that site may go unnoticed and unanswered for extended periods of time. Having a multi-site message flag with an indicator of which site the message is on would speed-up communications and promote collaborations.

Regarding Tax Deductibility

Hello can I ask, why there's no Indonesian version of it? The reason they said removing volunteer translations. for legal reasons we are only using professional translations for these pages. I'm not pretty sure about this, translating it is very easy if you know law jargon, why there's no pages for it? This page is crucial and always being shown every-time there's a fundraising campaign started. Please make the translation of it, it's often being questioned on Indonesian Facebook page for Wikipedia about where their donation goes and who gonna use their money and for what purpose, can WMF make the translation of it? Regarding Template:Contribute Wales' Quote in the Header Should be Replaced

This is a comment on the quote in the header : "Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet has free access to the sum of all human knowledge." — Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia

May I suggest that the foundation remove the statements referring to "a world in which every single person on the planet has free access to the sum of all human knowledge", since they were recently completely invalidated by Mr Wales himself.

Free access to all human knowledge is a crucially important endeavor, and I consider "the sum of all human knowledge" to be the legacy, the rightful inheritance, of all humans.

I am not an energy healer but I am an information professional and I find his stance derogatory and exclusionary, which negates the quote brandished on the home page referenced above.

Clearly Wikipedia is his baby, and he can do with it whatever it pleases, but in doing so he is contradicting himself in this and other statements of mission for which Wikipedia is known and on which it prides itself.

Specifically, Wales recently came out with a biased edict that excludes a body of knowledge that he personally, in an unsubstantiated statement, judges as non-knowledge. Unfortunately it is nothing more than simply Mr Wales' personal opinion; but being who he is, he calls the shots.

At the same time, he does not make mention of the fallacies and deliberately falsified peer-reviewed studies that are routinely exposed, published by pharmaceutical giants for the single purpose of profit; often obscene profit. Nor does he take into account the millions of deaths at the hand of conventional medicine practitioners and treatments such as chemotherapy. All this he claims or believes to be "true science" when it is not. In short, his bias is palpable.

Wales disregards a sizeable body of proven natural healing methods that include energy work. Take meditation, an age-old tradition that has been proven to heal more times than there are entries in his Wikipedia.

Instead he is splattered all over Time magazine with the following regrettable quote: "No, you have to be kidding me. Every single person who signed this petition needs to go back to check their premises and think harder about what it means to be honest, factual, truthful. Wikipedia’s policies around this kind of thing are exactly spot-on and correct. If you can get your work published in respectable scientific journals – that is to say, if you can produce evidence through replicable scientific experiments, then Wikipedia will cover it appropriately. What we won’t do is pretend that the work of lunatic charlatans is the equivalent of “true scientific discourse”. It isn’t." Wikipedia Founder Sticks it to Lunatic Holistic Healers

Regarding wikimediafoundation.org

I just did a search for the word "pedagogy", and as always, Wikipedia provided a clear and fairly detailed explanation. My reason for disappointment and concern is that while Wikipedia offers this information in myriad languages, it is not offered in Urdu. Urdu is used as the primary language in Pakistan, a country approaching a population of 200 million. If Urdu speakers in India, and Kashmir are added, this number can easily be doubled to about 400 million, needless to say, a significant segment of the world population.

While it is gratifying, and impressive too so many languages that cater to much smaller populations of the world, this only makes the exclusion of Urdu even more stark.

I would like to know how languages are chosen, and how Urdu can be added to the list. Thank you.

All Wikipedia language editions are written by volunteers. en:Urdu gives a lower number of speakers but there are still fewer volunteers in Urdu than in many smaller languages, and the Urdu Wikipedia only has around 35,000 articles. Internet access and spare time may be factors. You are welcome to contribute to the Urdu Wikipedia. Your account works there and you can create articles right away. As far as IAC is concerned all our issues are equally important, especially the libelous article on India Against Corruption. All pornography is equally abhorrent to us if it can be viewed or edited by minors and children. IAC is outraged that the "Delhi Gang Rape" juvenile offender's cell phone contained graphic images downloaded from Wikimedia. WMF is as well aware of the URLS of these curated galleries of child pornography on WMF servers, as IAC is, considering that these are for the most part curated and compiled by WMF administrators, and they are rarely removed because the deletion discussions revolve around copyright and not obscenity. The reason I am writing to you today is that I have been researching PCOS because my daughter has been diagnosed with it. I became aware of her lack of periods early on in life, and we have been to countless doctors in the last 10 years, non of whom have been able to help. Since this disorder is caused among other things, with the imbalance of hormones, particularly male hormones in excess in a female patient, I have been trying to figure out what might have gone wrong with my daughter. One obvious and terrifying thing comes to mind which I want to encourage Wikipedia to help with…it is the use of Taurine…particularly the use of it in energy drinks which are so popular with kids. My daughter started drinking Red Bull and other Taurine based energy drinks in early adolescence when these products first came out. Her hormonal levels are all messed up and I intuitively, and also because of research that I've been doing, predict that PCOS may have a correlation with these energy drinks that contain bull male hormone. The high levels of Taurine in Red Bull and other energy drinks, I believe may have been the cause of my daughter's current troubles. What I am asking in essence is if you are able to make this one of your projects. I think the world needs to know and it would be very beneficial to do a study of PCOS women to see how many of them used or abused Taurine products like Red Bull in adolescence. Thanks very much. I was not able to log in on wikimediafoundation.org. It said my username doesn't exist, so apparently it requires a separate registration (and there is no link for this), and there is no mention of this anomaly on the page explaining the unified login.

Https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_policy doesn't even mention that a new version is being discussed and obviously doesn't encourage participation in that discussion.

The Wikimedia Foundation site is not part of the single unified login used for the project sites. Login accounts on the Foundation site are only available to employees and a handful of volunteers so it is correct that you cannot login or self-register. Readers of any German wikipedia page are redirected for "Nutzungsbediungen" to the page wmf:Terms of Use/de. As far as I can see, the page was created by wmf:wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/User:Mdennis. My impression is, that the text is a copy and paste from https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_use/de, (with the displayed page title "Nutzungsbedingungen", I don't understand which is the actual page title).

A first draft of the German translation was created by me (my last edit there seems to be at 29 October 2011), later the translation was revised by other contributors.

I can't log in at the wmf-wiki. My request is, that the revision history of https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_use/de should be exported to the wmf-wiki, and added to the revision history wmf:Terms of Use/de, in order to comply with the free license (probably Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License), so that the authorship of the creators of the translation, among them myself, is documented and e.g. visible to the readers of of the German wikipedia, Rosenkohl (talk) 09:42, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

• I must ask you to imagine that you were a reader of wmf:Terms of Use/de who is looking for the orignal authors of the page's content. Such a reader will neither find, nor understand the revision comment

"created with content copied from meta:Terms of use/de, which see for attribution".

• a revision comment for any edit usually refers to the actual edit to which it belongs, if not otherwise stated. So the revision comment "created with content copied from meta:Terms of use/de, which see for attribution" seems to indicate that not the original page, but this particular edit [10] was "created with content copied from meta:Terms of use/de, which see for attribution". But the edit itself does not change the page's content. No reader of the revision history will be able to understand without further explanation that the revision comment "created with content copied from meta:Terms of use/de, which see for attribution" actually is supposed to refer not to this minor edit on 16:50, 16 April 2014, but instead to the whole page created as created on 15:05, 19 April 2012.
• Saying "created with content copied from meta:Terms of use/de, which see for attribution" is not a complete English sentence, since the object ist missing: the comment does say that something has been created, but it does not explain what exactly has been created. And furthermore, the comment does not explain when exactly this "creating" took place.
• I see two options: either the real revision history of https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_use/de is imported to wmf and added to :wmf:Terms of Use/de. I know that cross-wiki imports are technically possible, at least between different language versions; and importing the revision history would be the clearest solution, so I don't understand why an import is not done in the case of this page to which I once had contributed.

Yeah, this is intended for an upcoming petition to mobile operators to support Wikipedia Zero. I don't know if any of you saw Victor's video from Sinenjongo High School at Wikimania last year, but it's been inspired by that. Create "Resolution:" namespace

There is a convention of beginning page titles that refer to WMF resolutions with the text "Resolution:" However, this is not set up as an actual namespace. Just wanted to say thanks to all the people that make Wikipedia possible. Was only able to make a $20 donation and as much as I use your site, it should be much more. I use an e-book to read, much of it being historical fiction. As I'm reading I'm constantly clicking on my "info" button for more information than the book explains and I always go to Wiki. I also use it through out the day for various information and know I can trust the contents, will get a complete, thorough, and unbiased description of whatever the subject is without distracting advertisements or someone's hidden agenda.

This is for your information concerning the PERSHING TANK that was brought into service in Germany during World War11. I served in the SECOND ARMORED DIVISION. I was in a tank in the first platoon of "F" Company, 2nd Battalion; 67th Armored Regiment. During the month of February 1945. my tank "FADIDDY" was RECALLED from action AFTER we closed the gap around the German Army in the Dusseldorf /Cologne area. Our tank, "FADIDDY" was a SHERMAN TANK. We traveled back a few miles to a barnlike building where we along with a few other tank crews were EDUCATED FOR ABOUT TWO (2) HOURS by some General Motors personnel on how to use the NEW tank that they gave us. The new tank was the PERSHING tank with a 90mm canon. Your current article about the PERSHING tank NEVER mentions that that tank was given to and was used in combat by the SECOND ARMORED Division! You DO mention the THIRD Armored Division and one other division, but you NEVER mention the SECOND ARMORED Division in that article! I do believe that a correction of this information would be the right thing to do! I go to Wiktionary and try to log in... It accepts my user name but not my password... I try to reset my password, it tells me I can't do it on "this Wiki site but can on another" and provides a link which takes me to the Wikimedia site which now says my username doesn't exist. Until I try to create a new account... now that username does exist!

Wouldn't it be simpler to allow any Wiki site to use the same database of users and therefore make it easier... heck, make it possible to update your password without spending a half hour getting bounced back and forth and in the end be unable to sign in to any of the sites? Bouncing a user to another site to access a database that is obviously used by the site they were just trying to access (or how would it be able to provide a link to another wiki site to update your password?) is absurd and does NOT make the site one bit more secure. It does however make the user experience very poor and the logic of the data flow redundant and more error prone.

Security is useless if the users of the sites are locked out, unable to access the sites and end up leaving frustrated as hell. Remember at least 90% of the users who are experiencing this problem will NOT take the time to complain so I don't think mine is a unique experience.

See SUL. For years, all new accounts have been global. Unfortunately, accounts that existed before SUL could still be unattached until SUL finalization (which has been delayed indefinitely). If you would like more help, you can ask for the account to be usurped (assuming it has no edits), and then try to merge your global account with Special:MergeAccount. Highland Light

The first-order Fresnel lens was not removed in 1998 as stated in the article. It was removed in the 1950's, being replaced by a pair of aero beacons, mounted one atop the other at right angles. These, too, were replaced in the mid 1980's by a pair of smaller aero beacons, mounted back-to-back. The current optic was installed in 1998.

Although I am poor, I knew I needed to make a donation, I have come to love WikiPedia so. (yes, I see you have yourselves as Wikimedia - please just overlook this, long story). And so it was a soul-shaking experience to, for the first time quite frankly, look up your definition of geo-engineering on a dare/suggestion/prompting of another.

Soul-shaking because I see your "explanation" and I find it wholly disingenuous. If not wholly, pretty close.

My heart is broken. I trusted "you," and believed there would never come a time you were bought, sold & traded by TPTB. I would have SWORN against it. I HAVE.

I was wrong. I feel so, so viscerally rotted somehow. I don't know how to explain it. I looooove words and expression of them - but I'm not that great at it myself. I can confer to you I now feel "dirty."

And also that I no longer trust you because I realize you will insert whatever the government et al demands you do. Or, worse, maybe you are one of them.

This is a critical component of Hispanic heritage and feminist roles within a marginalized indigenous group...also a means to legitimize and document contributions and issues in a manner that will benefit the balance of regional differences between D.C. and NY controls with SW USA border states and the cultures of MexAmerica. This is a hemispheric gateway region where thousancs have been murdered, died, or marginalized into extraordinary poverty and subsistence levels. It is time to document in an honorable and meaningful way the achievements of such a leadership. I have for many years worried about all the inaccuracies, the failure to include historical and governmental policy changes that have impacted so many MexicanAmerican and other Hispanic families and communities. Regarding Local chapters overlapping divs

The list of local chapter addresses seen at the page above (and many others — the text is transcluded from wmf:Template:Local chapters and wmf:Template:Chapters addresses, ultimately being rendered using wmf:Template:Chapters addresses/layout) is "unusable" (on some browsers, at least?) because someone has hardcoded the "height" parameter to use either 190 or 180px in the "layout" template, which causes the addresses' "div" boxes to overlap. Someone please fix this. (Might it be preferable to set the heights in the individual "/ISOCODE" subtemplates, instead of in the "/layout" template? Why not simply setting widths and heights in ems instead of pixels ? and "overflow:visible" is amost always undesirable. (overflow:auto would bot help uncreasing sizes if cells of the "matrix" need to have all the same height so they line up correctly. I understand why you don't use a table (because a fixed number of columns would not work with narrow screens that cannot fit all without requiring an horizontal scrollbar, absent from mobiles supporting often only the vertical scrolling, horizontal scrolling requiring javascripts to capture panning touch events, for example when viewing enlarged images).

Immediately the pixels sizes are assuming fonts working only on desktop PCs and some Macs. The sizes do not work on mobiles.

Using sizes in em (use "line-height:1.5", not any value velow 1.5, and then count 1.5em per line (this will work with smartphones that have large fonts needing more pixels than desktops, due to their very high pixel density, needed to readability of letters in smaller physical sizes, but even then many users feel the character sizes are too small and use accessibilty options in their smartphones, so they can't fit more than avout 30 characters per line when the phone us in normal vertical orientation, or 50 characters in horizontal orientation; a single column will fit, and possibly only two in the horozontal screen viewing mode, if not using accessibility options for larger fonts).

Users of tablets with diagonals above 5 inch are not impacted so much (the physical pixel density is smaller than on smartphones, fonts have sizes in pixels near the desktop, but still there are less choices of builtin fonts, e.g. in lowcost Android tablets, used in Asia and Africa). Users of veru wide screens (such as HDTV, observe it from a distance where the HD content will use fonts with larger than expected heights in pixels, they are in the same situation as users of smartphones with high pixel densities).

Then don't use too narrow widths, and allow the column to fit an address on up to 6 lines (, plus up to 2 lines for the contact addresses, plus 1 additional line for the bold titles in ar,fa,ja,zh, you get a height of 8 or 9 lines for a total of 12em or 13.5 em in ar,fa,ja,zh. The width should be able to fit address lines of up to 50 characters, i.e. about 30em. Finally, all addresses can be set so that lines will fit correctly in that width (you may play with the placement of the country name grouped with the zip code, or pack address complements after the first line of the local name of the Wikimedia chapter, but separate from the line with zipcode/postcode. You can expect one line to be wrapped with the total of 8 or 9 lines i.e. 12 or 13.5 em. verdy_p (talk) 20:41, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

I tested the solution I proposed in various screen sizes and viewing modes, on dekstop PC, HDTV and Android smartphone and tablets , and the address boxes fit correctly and line up correctly with style="float:left;line-height:1.5;height:15em;width:25em" (you may reduce the width to 20em to fit a possible additional column on wide screens, fiven that linewraps are still enabled. Note: no overflow set (the default is overflow-x visible biut with linewraps enabled, and the cumfortable height, this is not a problem, vut if you're not cumfortable with it, allow overflow-y:auto so that vertical scrollbars can appear conditionally)!.

Since the Foundation wiki is completely locked down for us ordinary folks, I have not verified Verdy_p's fix, but the suggestion appears to be to change the contents of wmf:Template:Chapters addresses/layout to:

Hello? ... Note that almost no one can actually fix this since it's on the Foundation wiki. Someone with editing rights on that wiki needs to fix it. (@Steinsplitter:?) As stated before, the current implementation is not acceptable because it hardcodes values in pixels. For the simplest possible change, just replace height:{{#if:{{{2|}}}|190|180}}px; width:270px; by height:{{#if:{{{2|}}}|16|15}}em; width:16em; (which works for me) and then, if necessary, adjust the values upwards to something that works for you (I wouldn't recommend adjusting them downwards). Wikipedia is only an "encyclopedia" if that word is now defined as a collection of absurdly bigoted, biased propaganda masquerading as neutral information. Wikipedia's headquarters should be burned down, and those in charge of this so-called encyclopedia should be dead instead of those driven to suicide by the hate and bigotry like we find on Wikipedia. Threats of violence are not tolerated and may well be illegal depending on where you live. They won't achieve anything other than getting you banned. You should note that the Wikimedia Foundation does not control the content of the English Wikipedia - that is determined by the community. If you have specific concerns regarding the neutrality or bias of articles there are plenty of editors within the Wikipedia community who would be more than willing to listen to your concerns and help address them as long as you maintain a civil approach. I WON'T BE SHELLING A SINGLE DIME

Soliciting donations when you are a) sitting on a $50 million plus pile of cash, and b) pissing it away antagonising the community (cough! MediaViewer cough!)??? That's pretty cheeky, that is.

Effectively, all this money goes to the WMF to compensate them for the very little work that they do: maintaining a server farm and dealing with legal questions is something that the two permanent employees were doing just fine back in 2005 or so. In the meanwhile, those who contribute the bulk of the effort (editors, admins, and the like) get sweet fuck all.

These comments go to Katherine, I guess.

This is good—it contains all the right ingredients. But I'm presuming that a press release like this should be a smooth, easy read for journalists. It's just a bit laboured in a few places. I presume an image was not regarded as suitable—I guess it might have been hard to be exclusive, but I'd want one (or a few to choose from) if I were using this in a publication or on the web.

A few niggles.

• The top bullet ... just slightly too long and clunky, to me. Perhaps avoid repeating "Wikimedia Commons", which they read two seconds before.
• "came into being"—a bit metaphysical; try "was launched".
• The "USA" should be dropped, and it's unclear why "San Francisco" is in parentheses—makes it bumpy.
• Double hyphens are not part of professional English—makes it look as though it was composed on a typewriter. Instead of --, please use an open – en dash, or a closed—em dash. See Chicago Manual of Style and the Oxford New Hart's Rules.
• "The Wikimedia Foundation is extremely grateful to have a dedicated community of creators and institutions who continue to share their images and other media so that the project has flourished and will continue to thrive."—Very long sentence. Journalists do not like to stretch their readers like this, and right at the start. Needs a period after "media", then a punchy stub.
• Pity there are two song sheets for "freely licensed" and "freely-licensed". The former is correct, and I'd have ironed it out of Lila's and Erik's quotes to avoid the clash.
• "The Guinness Book of World Records named Wiki Loves Monuments the largest photo contest in the world, and it has inspired more 900,000 image uploads since 2010."—real problem with "it". Maybe "... world. This contest has ...".
• "and it has inspired more 900,000 image uploads since 2010"—missing word: ouch.
• have ensured.
• "the increasing depth and richness of the illustrations for articles on Wikipedia"—clunky. What about: "the increasing depth and richness of illustrations in Wikipedia articles."
• extremely -> very
• "Today, Moeller is the Wikimedia Foundation’s Deputy Director and VP of Engineering, and Commons is the world’s largest repository of freely licensed educational media on the internet." Great sentence; but it doesn't flow clearly into the quote (we presume it's Erik's quote, but do they have to think carefully about it?).

My comment is on the Grand Canyon. I have a very simple question. I would just like to know how or where I can find any records of the earth being older than what the Bible says it is when it was created. I can't find any record of any language or people, pictures, documents, witnesses or any writing that specifically tells me that a rock is a million years old, or 5 million years old.

The soonest communication that I have ever found to be fact, is only 6,000 years old.

The scientific consensus is that the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. 6000 years ago was (by some sources) around the time of the domestication of horses, and was extremely recent by geological standards. This was around the Copper Age in Europe. See w:Age of the Earth and its references for more information. If you're looking for writings, maybe read Charles Lyell or Hutton, but they were off by orders of magnitude if I remember correctly. You can discuss fundraising on Talk:Fundraising, on the fundraiser mailing list, or in our IRC channel #wikimedia-fundraising^connect. To address your numbered points:

1. We are a charitable organisation, and we don't receive funding from governments (partly because of the risk of bias, or perceived bias, that would cause). The vast majority of our donations are small ones from individuals.
2. We do try to keep banners to a minimum, while still meeting our fundraising targets. You can always click the close button in the top right corner of the banner, and if you are logged-in to your account then you won't see banners at all.
3. Our banners have evolved a lot in the past, and we no longer use a direct personal appeal from Jimmy Wales. Along the way we've tried (and continue to try) all sorts of things, including images and donor comments. The current message is the best we've found so far, and the more effective a banner is, the fewer times we need to show it. Also sorry to disappoint you, but the Wikimedia Foundation has itself spoken out against the European Court of Justice ruling, although of course we recognise there are diverse views on this.

The goal is to entice corporate donation via a competitive/comparative marketing component while also holding the service/provider networks accountable with a transparent and unified case management system. We also find that it's a sound business practice to notify donors when funds are transferred. Many email programs and clients will allow users to set up a filter, so that incoming email from a given address can be sorted directly to a folder other than the Inbox. I'm sorry we do not offer the option to forego the receipts. They are the only email you will receive from the Foundation; you have been unsubscribed from other communications, including fundraising appeals. Shorter receipts for recurring donations, with just the donation details, are a possibility for the future.  There is one place on the web, in general, that I easily make donations to. It is with special supporting groups that educate our young and older members on SL, Second Life. (Builder's Brewery and Arcadia are a few.)

So are any of your staff, members of SL? Opening an SL Group costs 100L, less then 50 cents. And Market Place stores are completely free.

Btw, a lot of folks will not join a group, because they are running out of group slots. But as one of the TOP educators on the web, many should gladly join your efforts on that group. Then, your group's membership could contact their groups and there's your donation dollars.

(Always have your members contact either the group's owner or a moderator, to discuss their donation request, it will keep everyone happy.)

And on your Market Place store, any and all items sold could act just like "donations" that cost you nothing, except a slight fee to the company.

                      I love the fact that Wikipedia exists at all. Seriously, thank you so much for the magical access to knowledge that you have provided me and millions of others. What a wonderful thing you have created, regardless of it faults. I am of the age when Microsoft Encarta was a boundless wonder given to the world (at a price, of course). It was unimaginable then, this open and free database of knowledge, accessible from our pockets. It really is a science fiction dream made reality. 

To my point: I was looking for something and came across your appeal for funds; the one that begins "DEAR WIKIPEDIA READERS: This week we ask our readers to help us." And I really would love to, and will help you. The only thing is I can't at the time that I read your appeal. I'm sure that you welcome donations at any time, especially now when you need it. So, in a very long winded way I am saying that I would have benefited from an option in addition to the "how much would you like to donate" options which says "It's ok if you don't have the money right now, shall we remind you on payday?"

I've been automating Wikipedia as an example of what I can do and noticed an inconsistency in the use of "Privacy Policy". The link to this page is correctly titled "Privacy Policy". But the title on the "Privacy Policy" page has a lowercase 'p' on the word "policy" and this occurs on and off throughout the page.

I looked at the entry for Entrust Bankcard and the last entry on that company said the BBB gives them an F. They must be an unstable company because of the way they do business. I was in a class action lawsuit against them or a business they sold to or changed their name to. I can't keep up with them. Check out their reviews. I think they need to be unmasked. Hopefully they are not hurting any more people at this time. I am 68 yrs old and am paying approximately $8,000 for an outdated processing machine I haven't used for 2 1/2 yrs. I will be finished paying it off in 2 1/2 more years.They lied from the time the salesman walked into my small bridal shop until the time I quit trying to contact them.

I have a problem donating to Wikimedia and Wikipedia while the Wikipedia begging fundraiser has continued unabated for years the level of article censorship and malicious reverting and editing by moderators and administrators has skyrocketed. In other words, I donate money to the very people who spit in my face by vandalizing and censoring my articles to meet their own political agenda. The level of cyberbullying from censor editors such as Brandon Harris/Jorm shows an utter contempt for the Wikipedia user community and the Wikipedia rules. That is unacceptable and despicable. Each year I see the donation advertisement at the top of the screen and I intend to donate, but I am simply busy and don't get around to actually doing it. Hello: I was very excited to be able to donate to your site. I have never seen the fundraising "ask" before. HOWEVER, as I was about to pay for my donation, I read your note that states donating money actually gives you all my personal information and you state that you can share my information as you wish. Are you kidding me? So sorry. I will not pay to have my personally guarded information released.

Suggestion: Remove that condition and set up a base line of trust between you and those of us who very much want to support you. Say you will never release our personal information, and we would be trusted donors to your efforts. Ask yourself, what is more important, doing the right thing and honoring people who believe in you and want to give you money, and raising more money then you ever dreamed possible, OR, salivating over the possibility of exploiting a "hot" list of personal data.

I am a financial manager, working with lots of non profits. Those who have little to give, don't know how valuable their personal data is, and those who have deep pockets, thoroughly understand the VALUE of their personal information. It appears that your appeal is to the bottom dwellers.

BUT... everything is changeable. You could change your policy.

Hi, So as a student, Wikipedia is pretty close to my heart. (Bless you guys, honestly) There's no criticism here, just a suggestion. When you guys ask for donations, maybe its an idea to display a progress bar? As in, set a specific goal as the end point, however much you need, and track the amount you get. Psychologically speaking (is my info saturated student showing?), if people see that others are donating, they're more likely to donate themselves. Also, you see a progress bar anywhere, you're gonna root for it to reach 100%. You get invested. So yeah, that's all I wanted to say. I mean, someone's prob already thought of it and its been vetoed, but just in case. Thanks for being awesome, hope all works out, I-need-to-get-back-to-my-paper

First: Not everyone will give anything & this approach demonstrates the lack of successful fundraising experience of your leadership. Fair share support is the winning way to approach your investment invitation. Yes, investment. When I just contributed $10 I invested in me, as I am helping you to continue to exist for my own benefit.

Second: Virtually no one gives to other's needs, except life-&-death matters. We all have needs, & mine come way before yours. So show how your mission is meant for me & that my investment is not so much a gift to you as it is an investment in me through your being a quick, reliable information source for me.

Please take these suggestions to heart. I have raised millions of dollars in capitol campaigns, and the same basic rules for success apply to annual solicitations.

Without sounding too egotistical, my advice far outweighs the $10 I just contributed.

I have unified my accounts, but still it does not let me log into the Wikimedia Foundation website (www.wikimediafoundation.org). Is this a bug? THere does not seem to be an option to create a login for that website, and in any event, I would prefer to have it unified with all the other wikimedia sites I use.

No, Jim Sowers -- the Foundation wiki does not make use of the unified login system. This is by design; it's only supposed to be possible for people who are explicitly invited to log into this wiki. If you don't have a login, and think you should have one, put a request at Request for an account on the Foundation wiki.
