Wiki Camp II

edit
August 16-29
Preparations

The organization team summarized the results of the first wiki camp, discussed the advantages and disadvantages and began preparations of the second camp. The preparations and the process of the second wiki camp were mainly the same as in the first camp.

After the camp

edit

The organization team summarized the results of the first and second wiki camps, discussed the advantages and disadvantages and made a general report. An anonymous survey was made to learn the opinion of the campers concerning different issues of the camp.

Lessons learned

edit

Wikcamp contribution
What worked well?
  • The reach of the participants. There were participants from 14 different cities and villages of Armenia, as well as participants from Lebanon and Georgia. First steps were made towards international WikiCamp.
  • Campers' contribution on Wikimedia projects. Especially contribution on Wiktionary worked very well, which is due to its editing easiness. (see Measures of success)
  • WikiCampers were very motivated, this is also due to special guests from Wikimedia Foundation, international participants and opportunity to participate in WikiCamps in other countries (i.e. WikiCamp Lebanon).
What didn't work?
  • Proofreading Wikisource was harder than we expected. This is our first experience to use Wikisource in our education programs. However we reached half of the number of proofread pages measure.
  • Managing Group Leaders volunteer activity failed. Group leaders demanded salary for their work a day before camp was going to be started. WM AM did not pay Group Leaders during previous WikiCamps. We had to pay them this time, though it was not planned and expected.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
  • Reduce number of proofread pages in half․
  • Change Group Leaders management.
  • Slightly change the schedule on the base of WikCamp evaluation survey responses.

Outcomes

Participants georgaphy
Provide the original project goal here.
Wiki Camp 2015 main goal is the education, deepening wiki editing and translation skills of participants through contributing in Wikipedia, Wiktionary and other Wikimedia Projects. It will encourage very active student wikipedians from Armenian Wikipedia Education Program and attract newcomers from different cities of Armenia which will increase the reach of wiki movement and Wikipedia Education Program in the regions of Armenia. Due to the camp Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikisource and Commons will be enriched with quality content.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
Yes. There were wikicampers from 14 different cities and villages of Armenia. Some of these settlements has no active Wikipedia Education Program participant. Motivation they got during WikiCamp will make most of them wikieditors, which will later help to engage more people and to establish a WikiClub in their place of residence.
Contribution on Wikimedia projects - Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikisource and Commons was measured. There were 1,668 word pronunciations uploaded on Commons, 100% of them were used in the corresponding word-entry on Wiktionary. We have got 4,159 new articles on Wikipedia and many improved, 14,075 new entries on Wiktionary, 973 proofread pages on Wikisource. In sum 24,131,649 bytes and 20,202 edits.

Project metrics

Project metrics Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
15 Western Armenian new users from Turkey, Lebanon and Syria. 8 new users from Lebanon We had a WikiCamp in Beirut, Lebanon on 3-12 August. WM AM decided to have Western Armenian participants from Lebanon, which were chosen from Lebanon wikicampers on the base of their contribution during the camp. They got ticket of participation in Armenian WikCamp as a prize.
10 Eastern Armenian new users 12 Eastern Armenian new users These are payable participants, because to participate in WikiCamp free, one should already have contribution on Wikimedia to be chosen.
6,000 4,159 created, 211 improved This time we had more Wiktionary editors, than Wikipedia editors, that's why the number of articles on Wikipedia is low, but, instead, the number of Wiktionary entries is high.
6600 entries created in Armenian Wiktionary 14,075
300 new articles in Western Armenian 233 new articles in Western Armenian See detailed metrics here. We had 8 Western Armenian participants instead of 15 so we can say that we have reached our goal.
2000 pages proofread in Armenian Wikisource 997
600 files uploaded in Wikimedia Commons (Armenian words pronunciation) 1,668
13,000,000 bytes added to wiki projects 24,131,649
100 participants editing 6 months after the event Will be measured later
10 participants will organize local events in their communities within a year after the camp Will be measured later
100 participants will attend local events in their communities within 6 months after the camp Will be measured later

Global Metrics

edit

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.

  1. Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."

For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.

Metric Achieved outcome Explanation
1. # of active editors involved 199 This number includes wikicampers and wikiteam members
2. # of new editors 12
3. # of individuals involved 219
4a. # of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages 1,668
4b. # of new images/media uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (Optional) 1,668 All word pronunciations were used on Wiktionary
5. # of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects 19,442 See project metrics for details
6. Absolute value of bytes added to or deleted from Wikimedia projects 24,131,649
Learning question
Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
Wikimedia Armenia's work has greatly increased the motivation of contributors. The motivating factors were the following:
  • the competition between camp groups (every day the best group was announced based on edits in wikiprojects)
  • the competition between campers (every day the best editor was announced based on edits in wikiprojects)
  • choosing the best article (every day the best articles were announced based on contribution in Wikipedia and Wiktionary.)
  • an opportunity to participate in other camps including the ones being organized abroad (the best editors who continue editing after the camp has an opportunity to participate in other camps as well)
  • Special guests from WMF who encouraged the campers by their speeches and talks (we had special guests from WMF - Senior Program Officer, Emerging Wikimedia Communities - Asaf Bartov, WMF Wikipedia Education Program Manager - Anna Koval and GLAMwiki Coordinator, Europeana - Liam Wyatt)
  • the camp's friendly and warm atmosphere.

Impact

edit

What impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?

Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects?

Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects?

Option C: How did you increase the reach (readership) of one or more Wikimedia projects?

WikiCamp participants' gender gap

International and Western Armenian impact - Wikicamp Aghveran 2015 hosted 3 participants from Georgia and 8 participants from Beirut, Lebanon. Participating in the camp the editors deepened their wiki editing skills and after returning home continued editing Wikipedia and its sister projects. As Western Armenian participants continue actively editing there are future plans to organize more camps abroad in the large communities of Armenian diaspora with the support of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation․ To note that we have already organized a Wikicamp for Western Armenian high school students in Beirut from August 3-12, 2015 which was very successful. All the participants were new comers and haven't edited Wikiprojects before. Now the majority of them continue actively contributing to free knowledge.

Regional impact - This year we had 157 campers from 14 different cities and villages of Armenia. We had participants from such cities and villages where we didn't have active editors. After the camp the participants continue editing thus creating an opportunity to organize productive projects there, including establishment of Wikiclubs.

The camp program included not only editing Armenian Wikipedia but also Armenian Wiktionary, Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons. Thus we increased the participation in more than one Wikimedia projects as well as increased the reach of wikimovement in the regions of Armenia.

The Wiki Team which consisted of experienced editors of Armenian Wikipedia every day proofread the content improved or created in Armenian Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Wikisource. Thus all the content contributed during the camp was improved. After proofreading the Wiki Team was summarizing the day results announcing the best contributor, best article and the best group of the day. Here is the metrics of Wiki Team during 1st and 2nd terms of the camp.
