  • Personal info: I'm a former WMF staff member (contractor), former intern, current volunteer press-contact, and an admin on English Wikipedia, Meta, and Ten-Wiki, as well as an OTRS volunteer (mostly legal queue). I'm also an attorney. For the past several months I've worked as a community associate for the 2010 fundraiser for the WMF (my contract ends this week). In that role, I did a fair amount of monitoring of smaller wikis, and I'm familiar with modifying user rights (my staff account was flagged to do so), so I'm already familiar with some of the Steward functions. I was also a temporary admin on meta on my staff account. Finally, I am one of few users who handles emergency incidents at emergency@wikimedia.org. I'm also an active editor, with around 19000 edits (primarily to English Wikipedia, but this spans across 30 projects or so between my staff and volunteer accounts). As you can tell from my history, I've been trusted to do a lot of sensitive work for the foundation, and one of the things I found myself consistently needing was stewards to handle various small cross-wiki requests. I would like to give back as a volunteer by helping with those requests for others. Oh, and as a helpful bonus, my new job will be paying for me to go to language school for a year, so I'll have some multi-lingual capability as well.

  45.   Support The main opposition to this candidate seems to be that he is an anglophone monoglot. As are many of the most knowledgeable experienced and helpful people on wikimedia. Barring him in favour of someone less experienced just because they are bilingual seems a false argument... some one who is bilingual in English and Latin is going to be more useful exactly how? Is there a particular language that we agree that we need more stewards able to speak: Or do these objectors each have preferred languages (probably their own) which they would like stewards to have? 66.   Support Competence and trustworthiness are more important than a huge number of cross-wiki contributions in multiple languages. It seems to me like part of the role of a Steward is being able to use your best judgement even if you're not totally familiar with a particular language or situation. 70. --Geitost diskusjon 01:40, 15 February 2011 (UTC) per Jon Harald Søby and Lolsimon. I'm not very convinced about the lacking crosswiki thing either, so I have to convince myself a bit because having a bit more experience with other language wikis would be helpful. So let's just give him a chance since he seems to be a trusted, experienced and also engaged user (and we need engaged people here) with the capability of reading other languages and with difficulty also writing them. There are less stewards now in comparision with earlier times, and we need more though there also are global admins helping out now. I think he can help with the work that surely isn't getting less with more wikis and more sides on every one of them and I'm convinced that we really need more helping hands and also more stewards with that. I also think he's tearing language borders down ;-) with automatic translators help at the time and he'll manage that cause he seems to be able to communicate in different languages despite of not speaking them well enough and he promises to learn more of that in a few months. And if you won't get through this election come back half a year later and run in the next elections again.[reply]

  77.   Support I think I was a bit hasty in my oppose vote. After looking into it a bit more and thinking about it further (after a note from Swatjester) I find myself thinking along the same lines as Abd above. We do not gain a multi-lingual steward by opposing Swatjester. Stewards are volunteers, not superhuman polyglots, and we should accept the good candidates as they are instead of throwing up philosophical objections. 2.   Neutral Hi, Swat. I'd like to pass on the same sage advice I received in 2009, and explain why I am abstaining from supporting you this go-round. You are a good EnWiki sysop and you volunteer in many ways behind the scenes. However, each project in the wikimediaverse has its own "flavor" and style, as it were. The vast majority of your wikiverse edits come from from EnWikiP. Someone coming, as I did, from what is perceived as the w:800 lb gorilla project does need to demonstrate that they are comfortable in understanding the climate and adhering to the guidelines of multiple other projects. Showing significant cross-wiki activity, even on another English-speaking project such as the Commons or Wikiquote, demonstrates that one can be a member of differing communities and will not let the mores and climate of one overwhelm the other. I'm not opposing, because I don't think that there is anything that you would do that would be inimical to the projects, but I would be more comfortable supporting if over the next year you showed a significant contribution to Meta and other projects. As for multilingualism; it certainly would be a plus in my mind. Personally, I give extra weight to knowing other languages, as the stewards job is made much easier when one is fluent in one of the languages of our larger projects (Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, etc.). I do not think that stewards must be multilingual, but having that facility would certainly have helped, and will help in the future. -- Avi 03:45, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
