Hello Sanskrit Wikimedians!

edit

Hi there @Shubha, Sayant Mahato, Surekha Kamath, Soorya Hebbar, KrishnamurthyAshwini, Pranavasagar, and Dayasagara:, I am proposing to create a new User group to advocate for Ancient Language Promotion, Education and Support. I am involved with some of the Latin projects, and would love to have some Sanskrit speakers involved in the project :)

I am also hoping to build up evidence of how each language is used and benefits the community, so that we can make a better case for support in various ways. But first I need to learn from each community.

Please add your name at ALPES Ancient Language Promotion, Education and Support if you would like to be involved, and leave more information here if you want to chat. --JimKillock (talk) 18:36, 15 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Great to see such efforts are being made. I have already signed up for the initiative. Hope for the best. 😊 - Sayant Mahato talk 17:30, 16 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you @Sayant Mahato: - do put us in touch with anyone else you know who you think we should talk to :) --JimKillock (talk) 06:06, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Literary Chinese

edit

@JimKillock: I am willing to help with correspondences with the literary Chinese Wikipedia, if necessary. AristippusSer (talk) 01:19, 16 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@AristippusSer: Thank you, I would be very grateful for that. Is there a good way to contact Ancient Greek Wikimedians? I will leave a message at the AG Incubator and on the current "open" request for a Wiki.
I left a notice for the lzh community. As far as the ancient Greek community goes, I think it is maybe four or five of us who were recently active? I would try to ask the test administrator, @PastelKos, though. AristippusSer (talk) 20:00, 16 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Latin Wikisource

edit

Scusate l'italiano.

--JimKillock (talk) 18:40, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cooperation of Wikimedia with Unicode

edit

Wikimedia have a cooperation with Unicode. The CLDR (Common Locale Data Repository) is a very important piece of our language infrastructure and they always need language enthusiasts to volunteer for it. Have a look if you would like to help. --JimKillock (talk) 08:36, 24 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Putting possible activities together

edit

Hi @Andrew Dalby, AristippusSer, Sayant Mahato, Mizardellorsa, Andreas Raether, NehalDaveND, Pavlov2, Martinus000001, Heracletus, PastelKos, Giorno2, Talondearg, Haoreima, Surekha Kamath, Amahoney, and Demetrius Talpa:

I'd like to think about some first activities, and use these to really think about what we need from Wikimedia and each other. Would people be up for some exploratory meetings and discussions? The kinds of thing I would really like to know include:

  1. What are the challenges for your projects?
  2. How much awareness is there of your work among your language community?
  3. What are the challenges for your language? What problems do you face?
  4. What do your projects add for your languages continuity, usage and learning?

I am sure there are more, but I would really like to document and understand some of this so we can start to be a useful project. Would a video or voice chat work for people, and if so when, eg what times / days are best?

Alternatively, if a chat room is better, eg Telegram / IRC etc, let me know. I will probably set up as Matrix + bridges to Telegram and IRC etc. --JimKillock (talk) 07:41, 28 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Applying for recognition

edit

Hi all,

To apply for Wikimedia recognition, we need two things:

  1. Three volunteers to be Committee members (I am happy to be one of those); and
  2. A name that has "Wikimedians", "of Wikimedians" or similar in it, to show the group relates to activity here, but is not an "official" entity as such

On the latter, does anyone have a good suggestion? I'll have a think of course. --JimKillock (talk) 19:10, 28 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@JimKillock:, Wikimedians for Ancient Language...? -Gifnk dlm 2020 If only Middle English Wikipedia could be saved(talk) 18:55, 21 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@JimKillock:, is this still something you are trying to do? -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 13:56, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Gifnk dlm 2020: yes for sure, the name is the main issue currently. I have plenty of ideas for this group; I'm implementing some of the groundwork for collaboration on translation and dubbing of videos particularly. I will come back with more information on that soon. --JimKillock (talk) 16:32, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@JimKillock:, great to know! Does my suggestion solve the issue? Wikimedians for Ancient Language Promotion, Education and Support or are there more unresolved problems? -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 16:43, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Also will the communication happen in a Wikipedia platform or in an external platform like irc? I personally think the former is better so that it will be done with the same accounts that for editing. -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 16:45, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
"Alpes" is a Latin name, for some high mountains (the Alps); while not an exact analogy it felt a usable one, for the heights of knowledge or somesuch; "WALPES", on the other hand is just an anagram. I'd like to find an anagram that is also a word in at least one language, or preferably more.
On communications, I am open to suggestions. It'd be nice to have a chat in the background, I would say, and occassional meetings. --JimKillock (talk) 17:00, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@JimKillock:, Now I understand your conflict. If I come up with a name, I will be sure to update here. -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 17:27, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I know it’s a strange name but how about VALEO (Vikimedians/Wikimedians for Ancient Language Education & Operation? Some might call it cringe. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/valeo. Ps finding Latin words with w is hard. -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 17:48, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Not bad at at all; I would suggest "valemus" (we are strong / thriving); (Vikimedians/Wikimedians for Ancient Language Education & MUtual Support), or similar :) --JimKillock (talk) 12:02, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@JimKillock:, yeah your suggestion is much better. The main problem I had with mine was the word “operation” I think that “mutual support is much better. -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 12:14, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Andrew Dalby: Maybe valeamus would work best? (Vikimedians/Wikimedians for Ancient Language Education Assistance Mutual Undertakings and Support) --JimKillock (talk) 11:32, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I can't find the "Chat client" section of "Miscellaneous" that you link to and I don't know what "Chat client" means ... Sorry Andrew Dalby (talk) 16:30, 3 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Andrew Dalby:, it was moved to larger suggestions. See Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Larger suggestions/Chat client. A chat client is basically an instant messaging software that in some casse can be more convenient than using talk pages like what we are doing right now. -📜GIFNK📖DLM💻MMXX🏰 (TALK🎙 | CONTRIBS) 15:12, 9 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
