Movement Strategy Implementation Grants

The Movement Strategy and Governance team wishes you a good start of the new 2022! As we begin this year, we look forward to seeing more collaboration, increased support and connection between communities and affiliates. We would like to use this chance to share some information on the Movement Strategy Implementation Grants that aim to support volunteers and affiliates looking to help in implementing the Movement Strategy Initiatives within their communities.

These grants support big and small projects that aim to take the current state of an initiative and push it one step forward. Apply for a grant to implement a Movement Strategy initiative with a budget up to $25,000. We understand that ideas flow at their own pace, so Movement Strategy Implementation Grants are designed to be flexible with no set deadline. Your applications are welcome at any time. Applications received after the 15th of each month will be reviewed in the following month.

Get in touch with us if you would like to discuss your project proposal or if you need more information about the program. The Movement Strategy and Governance team is happy to host conversations regarding these grants. Conversations may help answer your questions, develop your ideas, and connect with other communities with similar interests. Please visit this meta page to look at some suggested examples, and you are welcome to join the “MS – Grants Community of Practice” group on Telegram!

Best regards, Movement Strategy and Governance team.--SOyeyele (WMF) (talk) 19:09, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Question about the Affiliates' role for the Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hi All,

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections so far. The Movement Strategy and Governance team suggested another question was still under discussion. As of today, we announce the last key question:

How should affiliates participate in elections?

Affiliates are an important part of the Wikimedia movement. Two seats of the Board of Trustees due to be filled this year were filled in 2019 through the Affiliate-selected Board seats process. A change in the Bylaws removed the distinction between community and affiliate seats. This leaves the important question: How should affiliates be involved in the selection of new seats?

The question is broad in the sense that the answers may refer not just to the two seats mentioned, but also to other, Community- and Affiliate-selected seats. The Board is hoping to find an approach that will both engage the affiliates and give them actual agency, and also optimize the outcomes in terms of selecting people with top skills, experience, diversity, and wide community’s support.

The Board of Trustees is seeking feedback about this question especially, although not solely, from the affiliate community. Everyone is invited to share proposals and join the conversation in the Call for Feedback channels. In addition to collecting online feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team will organize several video calls with affiliate members to collect feedback. These calls will be at different times and include Trustees.

Due to the late addition of this third question, the Call will be extended until 16 February.

Join the conversation.

Best, Movement Strategy and Governance.--SOyeyele (WMF) (talk) 10:55, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Deployment of FLORES Machine Translation to Igbo Wikipedia.

Ndewo nụ ndị ọma!

The WMF Language team has added another machine translation (MT) support for the Content Translation in Igbo Wikipedia called FLORES. This means that you can choose to use FLORES machine translation when translating Wikipedia articles to Igbo using the Content Translation tool.

The FLORES Machine Translation service is provided by an AI research team at Meta through a free for use API key that allows the Content Translation to access the service on the FLORES server for an evaluation trial period. This MT is set as optional; in your Wikipedia, which means you can choose not to use it as your preferred initial translator. If you decide to use this service, you can select "FLORES" from the "Initial Translation" dropdown menu where you will find other existing machine translation services on the sidebar.

The Wikimedia Foundation has worked out an agreement that allows the use of FLORES without compromising Wikipedia’s policies about attribution of rights, your privacy as a user, and brand representation. You can find more information about the FLORES Machine translation on this page.

Please note that the use of the FLORES MT is optional. However, we would want your community to:

  • use it to improve the quality of the Machine Translation service; and
  • provide feedback about its quality and ask any questions you might have about this addition.

We trust that this addition is a good support to the Content Translations tool towards having better quality articles in Igbo Wikipedia.

Making Flores a default Machine Translation for three months in Igbo Wikipedia

Ndewo nụ ndi nkem!

The WMF Language team would like to make Flores, provided by an AI research team at Meta, the default machine translation support in your Wikipedia Content Translation tool for a test period of 3 months.

The above experiment will help us determine how useful the Machine Translation is for your community more reliably. By setting Flores as the default service, we expect more content to be created by using it and the data about its quality to be more representative. We plan to effect this change on 11th April 2022 unless your community has an objection not to make the FLORES the default Machine translation.

It is okay if individuals decide to select their default service, which would also be helpful to understand user preferences. However, we would encourage you to use it. After three months, we would revert to the initial default machine translation unless your community thinks otherwise.

We thank you for your support and look forward to the outcome of this test.

Reverting to Google as the default Machine Translation in Igbo Wikipedia

Ndewo ndi nkem!

Three months ago, the WMF Language team set the Flores Machine Translation (MT) support as the default in your Wikipedia which just ended.

So, we want to revert to the initial default Machine translation support for the Content translation tool in Igbo Wikipedia unless there are objections from your community to retain the Flores as your default MT.

We will wait two weeks for your feedback in this thread on the above, and If there are no objections to reverting to the Google Translate, we will make the Google MT the default translation in your Content translation tool after the 25th of July, 2022.

Thank you so much, and we look forward to your feedback.

UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 12:36, 12 July 2022 (UTC) On behalf of the WMF Language team.

Hello @UOzurumba (WMF):, I observed that there was a new machine translation while using the content translation tool. During translation, I observed it was accurate to an extent but not 100% accurate because a few words were edited for better understanding. The beautiful thing is that I had the option to choose from the various machine translation available on the list. I suggest that instead of removing it completely, users can be given an option of choosing any of the MT tool they prefer (Flores, Google, etc) Olugold (talk) 13:08, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Flores is better and should be set as default. Thank you! Olugold (talk) 19:13, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Both tools should be made accessible for optional usage. Obuezie (talk) 13:45, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Both services will be available. Each editor will be able to use the one that works best for them. However, we need to pick one to be the service used by default. This is the service they will find for the first time, and many people may not even try to change the defaults. Hearing from the community which one works generally better is useful to decide which should be the general default for Igbo. If you have a sense of which one works better in your experience, please let us know.
Thanks! Pginer-WMF (talk) 14:05, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Flores is actually better than google, its translation are 100% accurate than google Nzechimere (talk) 16:01, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Propose statements for the 2022 Election Compass

Hi all,

Community members in the 2022 Board of Trustees election are invited to propose statements to use in the Election Compass.

An Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will propose statements for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering in their answer to the statements (agree/disagree/neutral). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.

Here is the timeline for the Election Compass:

July 8 - 20: Community members propose statements for the Election Compass

July 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements

July 23 - August 1: Volunteers vote on the statements

August 2 - 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements

August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements

August 15: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision

The Elections Committee will select the top 15 statements at the beginning of August. The Elections Committee will oversee the process, supported by the Movement Strategy and Governance team. MSG will check that the questions are clear, there are no duplicates, no typos, and so on.

Best,

Movement Strategy and Governance

This month we are meeting on Sunday November 13, and you are all invited to RSVP here.
