englisc/ænglisc

edit

Hey, I notice the local name for Old English is here given as "Englisc". This is not incorrect, however, elsewhere for intwer-wiki links, we have used "ænglisc" (which is also not incorrect), in order to more clearly differentiate it from modern "english". How should that be achieved for this link, also? Gottistgut (talk) 09:30, 8 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Is there somewhere where one can see the growth in articles with a "List of wikipedias" for previous years. So one can see how things has developed, say, each 5 years?

Correction of name of Konkani Wikipedia (gom)

edit

The local name of the Konkani Wikipedia needs to be corrected. As per [1], the name must be "कोंकणी / Konknni", while "गोंयची कोंकणी / Gõychi Konknni" may be used if needed to disambiguate with Maharashtrian Konkani (knn). The present "गोवा कोंकणी / Gova Konknni" is incorrect. The Discoverer (talk) 10:08, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Emaus (talk · contribs), please could you let me know, where the template that's used to generate this list gets the local names from? Is it from Names.php? Because it isn't matching with the names in that file. The Discoverer (talk) 12:28, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Currently it is a local file of bot. --Emaus (talk) 22:26, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hello Emaus (talk · contribs), thanks for your reply, because I was wondering from where the present term "गोवा कोंकणी / Gova Konknni" came from.
You may have noticed that the discussion on Phabricator has been stalled for a long time, with no resolution in sight.
A short summary of the discussion: In the local discussion, the gomwiki community said that they call their language as "कोंकणी / Konknni" (without the translation of 'Goan'), and that the present "गोवा कोंकणी / Gova Konknni" is meaningless. However on Phabricator and in Code Review, some non-gomwiki users disagreed with this name, saying that "गोंयची कोंकणी / Gõychi Konknni", which is the translation of "Goan Konkani" should be used, in order to differentiate from an entity called as 'Maharashtrian Konkani' (knn), of which nothing exists on any Wikimedia site. And that's where things stand.
In the meantime, the page 'List of Wikipedias' is (and some other pages on Meta are) using the name "गोवा कोंकणी / Gova Konknni", which has no meaning in any language. Therefore I leave it to you to decide which of the two forms to use: "कोंकणी / Konknni" or "गोंयची कोंकणी / Gõychi Konknni", but I strongly urge you to remove the name "गोवा कोंकणी / Gova Konknni".
The Discoverer (talk) 06:18, 3 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hello, The Discoverer (talk · contribs). Sorry for delay. Yes, I saw the discussion on Phabricator. But, unfortunately, I'm not an expert on the question and I cann't properly examine the reasons on name choosing. In my opinion in such situation the best decision should be an invitation of any Language comitee member (for example, Amire80 (talk · contribs)) who will define what local name should be on List of Wikipedias table. --Emaus (talk) 00:48, 21 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Emaus (talk · contribs), having a language committee member decide will be fine. The main thing that's irking me about the status quo is that we are stuck with an incorrrect name at present. The Discoverer (talk) 04:17, 21 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi Emaus (talk · contribs), we are still stuck with the incorrect name "गोवा कोंकणी / Gova Konknni". The Discoverer (talk) 05:50, 15 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

I'm wondering if it's possible to generate a "total red-links in a Wikipedia" number. Even if it's generated on a less frequent basis (e.g., List of Wikipedias by sample of articles), it'll be *a* useful indicator of to-do on each Wikipedia.

Thanks,

अभय नातू (talk) 21:09, 8 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

You can use the tool Special:WantedPages on a wiki to see the non-existing pages with most incoming links. Simply counting red links across all wikis would not really help if the goal is to find topics to write about. — Yerpo Eh? 09:29, 10 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
List of articles every Wikipedia should have, List_of_Wikipedias_by_sample_of_articles/Absent_Articles, https://tools.wmflabs.org/not-in-the-other-language/ (and more) may be also useful. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 10 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I am aware of the pages mentioned above. Doesn't look like a way to get total redlink count exists.
The goal is not to find topics to write about, rather to see if a given Wikipedia is trending towards future, potent growth or if it's working its way into a more "complete" source of knowledge. The number (rather the trend) could also point to maturity of a given Wikipedia, community or several other variables/factors.
As for usability of such a number, it's a point of debate (elsewhere) :-)
Thank you for your replies nonetheless.
अभय नातू (talk) 20:58, 11 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
The thing is, this number depends on several factors other than "completeness" - first of all, small Wikipedias will necessarily have small number of red links, which will probably grow exponentially with size and only start diminishing in largest Wikipedias. Secondly, some Wikipedias (English, for example) have a policy discouraging linking non-existant pages, so they will be useless for making comparisons. — Yerpo Eh? 16:38, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
To reiterate the point I made above, the comparison is *not* between two wikipedias, it would be like comparing apples and oranges (or maybe comparing apples and luminosity of stars in Andromeda! :-] ) I was looking for a trend within the *same* Wikipedia/wikiproject over time. Granted that a short time horizon (days/weeks) may not be useful but a longer time-horizon will certainly point to useful information.
I am not *insisting/demanding* or even requesting there be a total-redlinks column. I was wondering if there's one and see if I can draw initial inferences based on available data. If the data doesn't exist and/or is too difficult to create, no worries, I can look to other derivative data categories for that.
Thanks again!
अभय नातू (talk) 18:25, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
p.s. I completely agree that this number, standing alone, is not the sole indicator of "completeness" of a Wikipedia.
I don't know if Meta has something like this, but several wikis have a place where you can ask database reports (en.wp has en:Wikipedia_talk:Database_reports for example). Or if you know SQL maybe you could use Quarry yourself. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 11:19, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Searching in multiple language wikipedias

edit

Hi, what would be the best approach if I frequently search something in say 4 wikipedias? Richiez (talk) 13:01, 15 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

One option is using Google with site:wikipedia.org in the search. This will search all Wikipedias and all pages indexed by Google. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:16, 15 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
That works, I can also use eg(site:en.wikipedia.org OR site:de.wikipedia.org OR site:it.wikipedia.org) to get more specific results. I am surprised wiki(media|pedia) doesn't have its own method to do it, or is it just too well hidden? Richiez (talk) 12:27, 17 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

edit

The English and local names for Tulu (tcy) are the wrong way round and (presumably because of that) the links to the articles about the language are broken. - Nikki (talk) 18:58, 12 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've just noticed the link didn't work so changed to the English Tulu. Feel free to change it back if this is wrong. I thought it was odd that it was the only one written in non-Latin script, which is why it wouldn't redirect. The preferred usage on en.wiki from my experience is that the names of languages, geographical places and ethnic groups are written in what they are more widely known as in English, especially when you consider people are more likely to search for or refer to the most popular term. For example the w:Berber language and the w:Berbers, more correctly the w:Amazigh language and w:Amazigh people. Uamaol (talk) 10:47, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Rationale for "Never been an official Wikipedia"

edit

The "Never been an official Wikipedia" section now lists 3 wikis that were rejected as Wikimedia projects. Problem is, there are already hundreds of potential Wikipedias that have been rejected, and surely dozens more on the way. Any of them could be set up at Wikia or elsewhere and possibly be added to this list. We obviously don't want to list all of them here. So, what exactly are the criteria for inclusion in the "Never been an official Wikipedia" section on this page? Should the section even be here at all? - dcljr (talk) 21:59, 3 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Number of Words

edit

Hi Emaus. Would it be possible to integrate also the number of words in all content pages in this table, which are evaluated in 'Special:Statistics' for some time now? Best regards, --Holder (talk) 12:09, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

(Not an answer to your question, but might be helpful…) The information currently shown in the "All Wikipedias" table are all based on the raw stats accessible through the API. But it looks like the "Words in all content pages" number shown on Special:Statistics is provided by the CirrusSearch extension (see Community Wishlist Survey 2017/Miscellaneous/Word count on statistics and the links from there). I don't know how a script would access that number. Do you? Emaus, can you figure it out? - dcljr (talk) 01:45, 9 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, bot gets data via API but can use any other useful data source. Currently I dony't know such source for word number. --Emaus (talk) 19:49, 10 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Error in the table at Serial Number 162

edit

The language "Bhojpuri" ("भोजपुरी" in the Devanagari script)(Serial Number 162 in the table) has been misidentified as the group of over 11 languages, "Bihari" - which it belongs to. I don't know how to fix it, so somebody else please do. PolyRe167895432 (talk) 00:49, 07 November 2019 (GMT + 5:30 hrs)

This seems to be because "bh" is the ISO language code for the Bihari language group (the Wikipedia subdomain in question is 'bh.wikipedia.org'), while Bhojpuri is "bho". Emaus would be the one to change this in the table (and he has just been "pinged" here). Note that the wiki was apparently created before there were clear rules about naming Wikimedia wikis (subdomains). A "bh" Wikipedia certainly would not be created today. There is already a Phabricator task (created in 2014) to change the subdomain from "bh" to "bho". Unfortunately, it is currently prohibitively difficult to perform such "renames" (I'm not sure why), so I wouldn't expect the subdomain itself to get "fixed" anytime soon. - dcljr (talk) 04:45, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Should this be mentioned in the Cebuano Language article?

edit

A minority language in the southern Philippines having the second largest Wikipedia next to English, more than not only Filipino but Spanish, the Chinese dialects, Japanese, German, Russian, with significantly less users is both noteworthy and amazing. Does anybody believe it should be mentioned in w:Cebuano language? J390 (talk) 02:14, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

The proper place to ask this would seem to be en:Talk:Cebuano language. (Note that almost all articles on the Cebuano Wikipedia were created — and most only edited since — by a single bot, as you can verify by hitting "Random page" several times on that wiki and then "View history" on each page you come to. So the size accomplishment is not at all amazing. Whether it's noteworthy can be discussed elsewhere.) - dcljr (talk) 02:27, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Total page views

edit

Hi,

It would be great to add the number of page views. According to Wikimedia: "Page views on Wikimedia projects is our most important content consumption metric." so this metric should definitely figure in a list of Wikipedias. Data is available for each Wikipedia on Wikimedia Statistics, I guess it would be easy to automatically generate the figures for all Wikipedias and update the table accordingly.

What do you think?

Best,

Antoine, A455bcd9 (talk) 05:18, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Emaus: as I've just seen you suggested the same thing two years ago :) A455bcd9 (talk) 05:21, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @A455bcd9:. Here you can find another version of list of wikis with added average daily views. --Emaus (talk) 13:19, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @Emaus:, thanks for your swift answer: this list is great! However I don't understand where those numbers are coming from. For instance, for German it says "31,188,229" but if I click on the link provided the last value (July 10th) is 27,442,329. For this day, the value on Wikimedia Statistics is 40,411,904. Which is the same value as the one on toolforge if you select "Agent"="All" instead of "Agent"="User". I guess it doesn't change the ranking though but I'd like to understand where the differences come from. A455bcd9 (talk) 13:55, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's an average during the last year with "Agent"="User". --Emaus (talk) 16:17, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. As Active Users are defined as "registered users who have made at least one edit in the last thirty days" it's probably better to average over the last thirty days (instead of the last year) as well for Daily Views, isn't it? A455bcd9 (talk) 17:25, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
There are lot of "Active user" definitions. For example, here active user is a user who made 5 edits per day or month. In my opinion the yearly average is more sustained, especially for small wikis. --Emaus (talk) 00:48, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes that's right I was only referring to the definition of "Active Users" used on this page. In any case, it would be great to add the definition of "Daily Views" somewhere. Does anything prevent Table2 from replacing Table on List of Wikipedias then? A455bcd9 (talk) 08:29, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@A455bcd9: In my opinion there should be RFC on the future of this table including many points. For example, on table2 you can see column "Score" that is a new proposition to project comparing. --Emaus (talk) 15:53, 25 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
I agree, this score seems way better! A455bcd9 (talk) 16:10, 25 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Emaus:, the Score parameter is your idea or has already been discussed with the Community. --Antonio1952 (talk) 14:39, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Help: Problem with Vietnamese Wikipedia (viwiki) [2]

edit

We have a problem with the depth calculation in our project. TuanminhBot created more than 15 million welcome pages (not sure the exact number) for new IP addresses who/which supposed to visit our project. Some IP addresses have never visited our project but still have a welcome page (and even for broadcast addresses, i.e, 1.1.1.255). We discuss and stop this action too late and this makes our project lost the real depth. Is there any solution?

  • Automatically technical delete all welcome pages that IP addresses never visit our project
  • Then, we can have our depth in real and honest calculation back.

Thank you! Alphama (talk) 12:13, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ok, let me know when it is finished. --Emaus (talk) 13:24, 11 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Such welcome pages can shorten the time for the Vietnamese IP to learn about how wikipedia works. Whenever they come to read wikipedia, a message appears, asking them to read the welcoming page. Therefore, these pages are useful to promote wikipedia and have trained the Vietnamese public about wikipedia in general. And it's effective forever because once it's created, it can be read by multiple people who use that dynamic IP.

In a country that has 30 million Internet users like Vietnam, these pages can be a cost effective solution for promotion. It could cost a lot of money and human efforts to promote wikipedia in Vietnam otherwise.

For depth, you can minus the total of page that TuanminhBot created and edited, then depth can be calculated as usual. Regards, Tuanminh01 (talk) 13:54, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Multiple people will not read the message because they won't know it's there. There are better ways to do this, such as a short MediaWiki:Anonnotice message with some helpful links that can be hidden by the user. — Yerpo Eh? 12:58, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
We already had en:MediaWiki:Sitenotice in our project. Alphama (talk) 20:12, 14 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Just a few editors look at the Sitenotice, not mention the IPs, who are focusing on the article they see. Tuanminh01 (talk) 12:56, 15 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

In my opinion there should be an RFC to discuss such propositions. --Emaus (talk) 16:01, 25 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
There is no help. Seem that we do not know what to do to gain the depth back. 201.141.8.137 00:50, 2 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
