100 important LGBT people/subjects
editI copied the following from a Wikimedia LGBT+ talk page. The discussion here followed a group discussion, and the group discussion followed a history of this idea being proposed in variations. There are many people and organizations who share equal credit for the idea, and anyone interested should feel completely free to call this project their own. One idea that emerged from the Wikimedia Conference is a list of 100 important LGBT people/subjects that should have an article in every language at Wikipedia. Will you help contribute to this list? Once we reach 100, we can post to the Wiki Loves Pride page and elsewhere. Feel free to add/remove. (Keep in mind, our goal here is to create and improve content, so we should not add topics that are well-covered or exist at many Wikipedias already.) Thanks! -Another Believer (talk) 18:01, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
- I added Alan Turing and changed them to links :) Amir (talk) 23:06, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, Amir! My hope is that this list will reflect a diverse array of topics, so the more contributors to the list, the better! -Another Believer (talk) 15:00, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- I also like the idea of choosing only 100 topics that the group promotes specifically for all languages. Right now this is a Western-heavy list. I might like the idea of choosing 75 topics then leaving some open slots for a few years to get international participation, then solidifying the list after some time. I added some topics and sectioned them into some categories. It is difficult to choose topics. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:59, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
- I completely agree re: the list being Western-heavy which is why I hope others will add/remove entries. I figured we needed to start somewhere. Personally, I would prefer to see entries that are related to LGBT culture and history and more "inviting" (maybe this is not the right word?) for anyone to edit. I am not sure "anal sex" accomplishes this goal, but certainly I think we need to have a variety of topics. Thanks for working on this list. It would be nice if we had a full 100 before June, in case we want to publish this list at ENWP as part of Wiki Loves Pride. -Another Believer (talk) 14:27, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
- Not just western. Apart from the US, UK and Australia, there is only one other country, India, mentioned at all. No other western countries are mentioned. Nothing outside the English-speaking world.
- I'll try to add (change) some names I think must be included. --Ecelan (talk) 11:05, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for contributing to, and diversifying, this list. -Another Believer (talk) 13:50, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

Bisexuality
editMaybe replace Bi-curious by bisexuality ? Léna (talk) 14:18, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
- Léna Bring in whatever seems useful and we will get others to sort importance later. Thanks for adding so much to the list. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:15, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Other Sections
editJust sayin'--it is really hard to keep this list to 100! :) What about a section for influential LGBT books, films, TV shows, etc? Influential LGBT celebrities? RachelWex (talk) 22:09, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
- RachelWex At Translation Task Force there are lists of medical articles, with one list of about 100 very common medical conditions being at the core of the project. The project started in 2011. It has recruited about 2000 translations from several hundred volunteers, so at most it is about 25% done of the 100 items * 80 language initial goal of 8000 articles. Actually, probably half of those 2000 are other translations which are nice but out of scope of the original intent. In various ways the project has probably consumed in excess of USD 100,000, and depending on how one calculates, the money cost can be higher. I think the system is efficient. Roughly, if there are 100 articles, 80 languages, and 3 hours per translation, that is 24,000 hours or about 12 years of full time labor assuming 40 hour weeks with 50 weeks in a year, just to make an approximation of the labor investment here. If we purchased this at the going translation rate of USD 25/hour, this project could be done for USD 600,000, which is not so expensive considering the competing project investments in LGBT publishing to achieve the same goal. Of course in Wikipedia we do not buy labor, but sometimes putting a money value on labor helps people imagine the size of a project.
- This list could grow in lots of ways but based on precedent in medicine which already had a large established volunteer base and cash investment, I advocate that the promoted version of the list be about 100 items. The LGBT Wiki base is a lot smaller with less money. Over time we might find creative ways to recruit more involvement, but if we assume that the pace of medicine is a best case, then doing only 100 articles can be projected to be a 10-20 year project. Looking ahead I would like to check in with others about making a serious attempt to get this done in some form in fewer than 10 years, just because I think it is important for everyone to have some information in their own languages. If more items were added, that probably also means adding years to the project.
- To your question - yes, all sorts of cultural artifacts might be included. However, if we want diversity of nationality and culture, that means that an entire country with centuries of LGBT history might be represented in this list by a single book or person. I am not sure how this list will develop, but if many countries are represented, then in the end even a major influence like the United States might be reduced to 2-3 slots of the 100 available. Having multinational representation could, I think, greatly increase the value of this when any culture represented can come to expect that their contribution would be translated and shared.
- Ideally as many cultures as possible could be represented. Beyond that, it would be ideal to cover all time periods and a mix of concepts.
- If there were only 1-2 each of books, films, TV shows, and celebrities, who would you choose? How do you think this project should go - longer list from the start? Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:14, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Blue Rasberry Thank you for providing some background to the 100 LGBT Wikipedia article project, as well as perspective on the length of time and potential cost that this project could take. I think if those interested in working on this project take the time to generate suggestions, then work together in some kind of committee to whittle these suggestions down to 100, that could work. Either that, or narrow down the topic from "LGBT" to "LGBT something" to come up with a list closer to 100 from the start. (Also...there are more than 100 countries...but I bet there are over 100 influential LGBT publications from more than 100 countries.) RachelWex (talk) 02:28, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

Changed numbering
editI learned how to put section headings and keep numbering. I changed the number system so that now we can see the total number of articles. The list is about 140 right now. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:52, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

I also added aikāne (Q16970572) to the list of Oceanian cultural concepts. — OwenBlacker (Talk) 21:54, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
- You removed those, and I still count 166 items in the list. I know that you understand the situation; we want to include good content in the list, but we have limited resources to develop and translate everything, so there are tough choices to make about priorities.
- Can you briefly talk through why you decided to remove what you took out, and say something about why you think including some films is important?
- I have no expectations here and just want to hear your thoughts. Also, if anyone were to cut any more, do you have advice on what they should consider? Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:31, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Major technological innovation
editThanks user:OwenBlacker for introducing new tools here which profile article topics and visualize the languages in which they are available.
- See before, June 2016 - June 2021
- See a many-languages prototype, June 2021
- See the current profile and few languages version, August 2021
I think this model of using Wikidata to get images, some information, and the existing language versions is the way forward. This presentation format immediately communicates our goal of sharing information across cultures, whereas in list form that part needed explanation.
Owen, can you say something about the tool, where you got it, and how you applied it?
I am unfamiliar with these tools connecting Wikidata to other Wikimedia projects. How can we link to documentation for "invoke:WikimediaCH2020"? Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:39, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
