Possible dates

edit

I might suggest August 1-9 as possible dates, as the start is easy to remember and it includes the original Bangkok timeframe, bracketed by two adjoining weekends.--Pharos (talk) 19:10, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

If this is not fixed I think it should be moved to start of October maybe, so there is more time to prepare and self/organize. --Zblace (talk) 06:12, 24 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I also suggest something later in August and also something in late October. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 2600:1700:BA3:1A0:29E0:4282:9DF7:10C5 (talk)

Support

edit

Support I like very much the idea of having a longer one week event with two week-ends. I think it would be fantastic also to use it to organize an edit-a-thon with a contest, work collaboratively on new projects and inviting people to concentrate on the wikimedia projects for a period. The only difficulty with presentations is setting the time because of participants from different timezones. I was proposing a 24-hours marathon (maybe the first or the last Saturday-Sunday) for two reasons: 1. it is crazy and 2. it is quite feasible with different timezones. maybe it can be included in the program of the week if other people enjoy the idea. iopensa (talk) 14:07, 23 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree with idea of timezone accommodating and marathon continuity and think even 36hours could be better but I think it should not all be contentious live, but rather every 4 hours it goes live! for hour or two and in-between there is pre-recorded and published content...that way people organizing or viewing are not pushed to or beyond limits *(we are in pandemic and care should be priority). --Zblace (talk) 06:18, 24 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Let's do it

edit

It seems like no one else has plans to do anything. Why not?

Wikimedia New York City just organized a little online event

and it got favorable media coverage.

The success of that friendly amateur first attempt at an online presentation was encouraging to me. I think an online project like Wikipedia can manage a fun online event. I can arrange some presentations with wiki community organizations in which I am a member. We can do this starting small and just add more presentations if interest grows. Wikimania Week -> Wiki Week

edit

I have changed the title to broaden the scope, and to make more room for including teams from other cancelled movement conferences, joining together in a federated online event this year.--Pharos (talk) 18:42, 29 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

This I find most valuable. It should be an event of knowledge cross-pollination, resource exchanges, sharing and solidarity. --Zblace (talk) 06:21, 24 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Remote participation resources

edit

I'm sure people here are aware of many of these, but just to add the links as a record: Resources:

Examples:

There are doubtless more, but I thought I'd include these here. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 04:43, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

A highly valuable open source tool for collaborative scheduling of a virtual conference was developed for the open publishing fest. The full code and implementation is at this github link. It would be far more efficient and effective to use this system compared to organising only on-wiki. I am certain the devs (Julien Taquet, Yannis Barlas, Boris Budini & Kevin Muñoz) could be asked to assist in setting it up for Wiki Week. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 04:47, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Committment

edit

We need people to commit to working on this event.

Wikispore Day July 19

edit

You're welcome to join us at Wikispore Day on Sunday July 19, it starts at 1pm Eastern / 17:00 UTC, and it will run for about 2 hours. You can RSVP on that page and possibly give a lightning talk on any Wikispore-adjacent topic. Sunday July 26 All-Affiliates Reconvening on Wiki Week planning

edit

All Wikimedia affiliates and interested organizers are invited to join a meeting on Sunday July 26 to reconvene on the "Wiki Week" concept and find the best dates and structure to meet the current circumstances, since early August is probably not realistic at this point.

Meeting time and platform, we can also add a more Asia-friendly time similar to All-Affiliates Brand Meeting if there is demand:

19:00 UTC participants

edit

Anyone with an affiliation or who has any interest in conference-organizing is welcome to join

Sunday evening for Europe/Africa; Sunday afternoon for North and South America

LEARNING from others

edit

Today, July 22 and tomorrow I'm in an online unconference. It's been the best online conference I've attended in part because all the roles have been worked out and choreographed so well. I like that the code of conduct is always available (and it's link is posted before every session). There are multiple facilitators for each session, and there are always at least 2 people "in the background" who are monitoring technical issues. We were zoombombed today and it lasted no more than about 10-15 seconds, because the crew was on top of things and expelled the intruders. More than that, like at a real conference, there was an information desk that was always populated by at least 2 people and a waiting lounge for those who didn't want to attend the talks. One thing I did not care for in this conference was its schedule: a 75 minute session, 30 minute break, 60 minute session, 30 minute break and a final 60 minute session. That's too much and I found it exhausting. I hope that's taken into consideration. - Kosboot (talk) 22:24, 22 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

sounds great. good points, but could you name the conference, add link to documentation and/or be able to find out more details on resources and organizing part? Zblace (talk) 06:27, 24 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
It was the Teaching With Primary Sources Unconference: http://rbms.info/tpscollective/events-and-opportunities/tps-unconference-2020/. The one problem I witnessed was zoombombing, but I think that could have easily been averted by having a list of registrants and comparing it to who gets into the Zoom. - Kosboot (talk) 23:20, 24 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Day of Wiki on or near January 15

edit

Based on discussions for the 2020 Wiknic (scheduled for August 16), I had an idea for Wiki 20. Why not have an entire day devoted to online Wikimedian presentations from around the world. Start with user groups in the Far East (Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific islanders) who can make up to hour-long presentations (informal), say checking in at noon their time, and go west around the globe, allowing affiliates/user groups from around the world to check in at noon their times for an hour or less (or much less) until you reach Hawaii/Alaska 24 hours later, creating one-continuous online "Day of Wiki." Of course it's a gimmick, but I think it's a gimmick that will allow many "under-the-radar" groups a chance to assert themselves and show they are part of a much larger worldwide community. - Kosboot (talk) 13:20, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Suggested topics before, during and post Wikipedia anniversary

edit

Here are my suggestions:

  • January 8-10 weekend - Storytelling on first five or fifteen years of Wikimedia projects (including local editions), first five or fifteen years of face to face and meetups, live chats, 15 Wikimanias
  • January 11-14 - What affiliates, local volunteers plan to do on the Wikipedia anniversary, continuation of discussion left from the January 8-10 weekend, storytelling about what happened in the Wikimedia movement from 2015-2021.
  • January 15 - Wikipedia Day Picnic or Dinner, looking back to 2001-2005. Wikimedians Achievement / Recognition / Awards day.
  • January 16-17 - Virtual Wikimedia Conference: Regular presentations, online editathons, meetups.
  • January 18-22 - Virtual unconference, Wikimedia strategy implementation topics
  • January 23-24 - New users e-learning, Virtual Lightning Talks, tech tools presentation.

Feel free to alter them in any way. I hope it will be an inclusive event from Wikimedia dinosaurs, geeks to newbies and curious passer-bys. --Exec8 (talk) 05:34, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Is this still being organised? Compared to wikiconference North America and Wikidata 8th birthday, it is harder to see who's hosting the various sessions. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 00:32, 17 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Asia-Pacific anchor event for Jan 16 or 17

edit

I propose that we designate an Asia-Pacific anchor event for one or a couple of hours on the first weekend, either one Saturday Jan 16 or Sunday Jan 17. This could be a model for other regional and thematic events, and might be informed by WikiConference North America 2020 and other covid-era convenings--Pharos (talk) 16:23, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Pharos:, Looking to hear more about it soon. Rajeeb (talk) 15:54, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
