Harassment workshop

edit

Greetings! You are receiving this message because, at some point in the past, you have participated in a discussion around the topic of harassment. The Support and Safety team is holding a series of consultations gathering feedback on the best potential solutions to the problem. The next stage is a workshop where we hope to narrow the focus to individual actionable ideas and explore how to bring some of these ideas to life.

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review

edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:46, 31 May 2016 (UTC) (Opt-out instructions)Reply

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

edit

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the Months of African Cinema last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000. About 9 in-person events were also organised for the edit-a-thon in different parts of the world.

The contest is organized by a Wikimedia project called The AfroCine Project, which is dedicated to improving the coverage of the history, works, people, places, and events, that are associated with the cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.

If you would love to join this exciting event, please list your username as a participant on the English Wikipedia contest page. If you would love to lead this contest for your country or community, please list your name in the coordinators' page here. The rapid grants team would be accepting proposals throughout October and November, in case you'd need funds to run local edit-a-thons or some other activities related to this event. Upon listing your name on the coordinators' page, you'd be contacted to talk about the resources you'd need to run the event in your community. You can also contact me directly for any clarifications.

Finally, We also need volunteers to handle some aspects of the AfroCine project. These aspects include:

  1. Community Liaison: This role essentially involves closely engaging with local communities to support their activities within the scope of Afrocine.
  2. Communications: This involves the communications aspects of the project. Sharing relevant information on mailing lists and social media would be the responsibility of this person.
  3. MAC Jury: This role involves joining the jury of Months of African Cinema contest. We need as many people as we can get 🙂.
  4. Tools: Going forward, we would need relevant tools to better track the metrics and also analyse the general impact of these events. We are calling for Wikimedia volunteers who can navigate wikimedia tools that can be useful for the project.

If you would love to help with any of these roles, or some other roles that have not been mentioned, please contact me directly or on: samoye_ hotmail.com

If you have further questions, complaints, suggestions, etc., please reach out to me personally or right here or the project talkpages.

Thank you!--Jamie Tubers (talk) 17:10, 30 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Possible topics include Community Board seats, Interim Global Council, Strategy prioritization follow-up events, Branding, Universal Code of Conduct, Grant strategy, and WMF CEO search. That is a lot of things, which are most important to cover in our upcoming SWAN meeting?

Inquiry on the Wikimedia projects the Wikimedia South Africa focuses on

edit

Hello Bobbyshabangu,

My name is Uzoma Ozurumba; we have met before during the WikiIndaba conference 2018 and 2019. Please, I am collecting data on different Wikimedia projects, e.g. (Swati Wikipedia, Afrikaans Wiktionary, Wikidata etc.) that Wikimedia African affiliates are focusing on in their activities. So, I will like to know the ones Wikimedia South Africa is focusing on. I checked for this info from your chapter's website, and I could only see that you have projects that focus on adding content in African language Wikipedia, but it did not specify. Hence I have reached out to you for this information. Thank you, and stay safe! UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 14:50, 24 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Do you know Setswana ?

edit

Hello I'm currently doing translations @[translatewiki.org ] for Setswana Wikipedia but there are some translations I'm not sure of and I want to confirm with other users who understands Setswana , so this is why I'm asking. Thanks Rebel Agent (talk) 05:52, 26 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad that there's finally someone giving love to the Setswana Wikipedia. Although it's not my mother tongue but I do know Setswana. Let me know how I can be of assistance. Bobbyshabangu (talk) 06:33, 26 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Bobbyshabangu Thank you, now I only need a little help but I will let you know when I need more help. Even though Setswana is my mother tongue there are some translations I'm not sure of, do you know the translation of Media (multimedia) in Setswana ?

Hi Bobby is it still possible to come with a proposal for a contribution to the conference? I know time is thru, but i am just about to start on a new job teaching and am pretty tight in ym time. We just had an admin-conference at swwiki and there is a point which may also concern other African language versions. We have a major challenge how to handle quality and bad edits coming in waves whenever somebody runs an editathon. So that would be a topic I could contribute. Cheers - Ingo Kipala (talk) 18:12, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dear Ingo @Kipala, yes of course, kindly submit your proporsal here before 7 October. Kindly note that scholarships for attending the conference are now closed, however you are welcome to attend if you have other means of funding your flight and hotel stay. Question regarding translation

edit

Hi Bobbyshabangu, Discott advised me to ask you. I hope you can help me with something, I know WLM is not organised in South Africa but I hope you can help me with this question. For the Wiki Loves Monuments banner I miss a translation of "Learn more" in Northern Sotho (nso) and Tswana (tn). If this text is not logic in your language, use then instead a translation of "More information". Can you provide me a translation in Northern Sotho (nso) and Tswana (tn)? Thanks! Romaine (talk) 17:17, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi there Romaine, I don't quiet get what you are asking of me. However "Learn more" in Northern Sotho (nso) is "Ithute ka botlalo" and in Tswana(tn) is "Ho ithutha ho feta mo". Bobbyshabangu (talk) 17:57, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Bobbyshabangu, Exactly this! :-) When Wiki Loves Monuments is live, there is a banner with two lines of text. The 1st line was translated into Northern Sotho and Tswana, but the second line they forgot. I don't know who originally translated it. Now you provided me a translation for both, the banner is now fully translated in both languages. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 18:08, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad I could help. Bobbyshabangu (talk) 18:59, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Word limit on Wikimedia Foundation elections/2024/Candidates/Bobby Shabangu

edit

Please be aware that there is a word limit of 1000 words for all your answers in total. You used so far 1223 words according to my counting tool in Libre Office Writer.

The word limit exists to limit the effort for our translators who will translate your text into several languages so that people who do not understant English can vote for you. Der-Wir-Ing ("DWI") talk 09:30, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Optional question for Board Election candidacy

edit

A mistake in the candidate application was brought to the attention of the Election Committee, accidentally duplicating an optional question and omitting an additional optional question. The Election Committee decided that candidates may still answer the additional question, and will waive the word count limit in the case of answering this additional question. You may fill out your answer on your candidacy page. The deadline to answer the optional question is 23:59 UTC on 2 June. Please let me know if you have any questions. l'élection du conseil d'administration de la Wikimedia Foundation 2024

edit

"Bonjour,

Shayi ngolu (talk) 08:17, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Shayi ngolu thanks for that question. Firstly if there's anyone who cares about the preservation of small and vulnerable languages and emerging communities it's myself. I have conducted many workshops in South Africa to increase small languages and supported emerging communities like Botswana and Namibia. I strongly believe that we need someone from the global South to sit on the board, someone who knows what being IP blocked feels like, someone who knows how it feels like to edit Wikipedia with very limited resources. Someone who has experience in governance and i have experience in all of these areas.
The global south and Africa in particular is one of the fastest growing regions in the movement but the Universal code of Conduct and friendly space policy provides a general approach for the protection of newbies. I believe that we need to be intentional with protecting new users to encourage user retention and , this is the first thing I’ll address if I get elected to the board.
As the movement grows, communications has proven to be a challenge. Wikimedia L and Meta is not really effective in communicating with the community en mass. We rely on Telegram and WhatsApp for instant messaging which have their issues, I believe we need to have our own instant messaging platform for Wikimedians. This can be integrated to Meta.

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees

edit

Hi Bobbyshabangu,

I see intolerance and the influence of pressure groups as a big problem, at least in German Wikipedia. Especially in political, philosophical or religious articles, sources and opinions are ignored, or even rejected with sarcasm or edit wars, which are not in line with that, what influencial Wikipedia authors consider as "mainstream" in society.

What would you do in view of promoting a climate, dicsussion and editorial behaviour which promotes openess and tolerance also towards minority opinions?

Best regards!
Johannes https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Jwollbold Jwollbold (talk) 13:20, 17 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Jwollbold this is not a problem confined to the German Wikipedia only. It's actually a world wide problem. I really think that there needs to be a concerted effort from WMF to periodically run campaigns that reminds users of the key values of Wikipedia such as the 5 Pillars of Wikipedia focusing on neutral point of view and verifiability. Really, writing articles without bias, representing all views fairly is actually what makes Wikipedia trustworthy. And I personally have many examples of this. And we are only left with a few hours before voting close. Please don't forget to spread the word. In Poland we were only given 3 mins to share why Wikimedians must vote for us but you might be interested in some of the reasons that I never got to share below:
- I believe it matters to have someone a Global South voice in the movement governance - I have first hand experience of being unable to edit Wikipedia let alone access the website because data continues to be expensive in Africa and I believe should actually be free.
- I’m passionate about the preservation of small, vulnerable languages and emerging communities and I know challenges that comes with editing small languages and emerging communities.
- The Friendly Space Policy and the Universal Code of Conduct provides general protection for newbies, I believe we need to be intentional about protecting new users. I know that the Global South especially the African Continent is the youngest and fastest growing regions in the movement, and this is one of the first thing I will address when elected to the board
-AI and the Wikimedia Ecosystem - Large Language Models (LLMs) integration into Wikimedia projects should not be a detriment to indigenous knowledge and small language projects. If I’m elected to the board, this is an issue I shall raise on the board. I believe WMF should draft a clear policy on how AI will be adopted into Wikipedia project. Bobbyshabangu (talk) 14:15, 17 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Bobbyshabangu,
thank you for your extensive answer. It was very convincing for me, also what you say about the preservation of small, vulnerable languages and emerging communities. Thank you that, living in South Africa, you have a view on the whole fascinating, but underrepresented continent. I myself have strong personal connections to Nigeria, to a center for music, dance and culture. I voted for you at the first position and wish you good success!
