Fundraising Committee

edit

Hi there! Thanks for volunteering to sit on the Fundraising committee. The work of the committee will be really valuable to making this year's annual giving campaign really effective. I've posted an overview to Fundraising 2010, and would love your thoughts on the talk page. I'm also going to try to set up an IRC meeting soon, and hope you'll join for that. Keep an eye Fundraising 2010/Committee for a couple of proposed times! Thanks again... Philippe (WMF) 18:26, 3 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Meeting

edit

Hi all,

I'd like to have a meeting on IRC this week to discuss the 2010-2011 annual appeal/fundraiser. This will be an "anyone is welcome" type meeting, open to the broad community. During this, Zack Exley and I will take you through our inital thoughts about the fundraiser and its organization, and ask you to join us in a discussion about the (massive) role of volunteers and chapters in this year's fundraiser.

Because of the vagaries of time zones, scheduling live meetings is hard. So, we'll have a couple of potential times, and we'll log and post the meeting for anyone who wasn't able to make it.

The meetings will be held Thursday, 12 August at 23:00 UTC (16:00 PDT) and Friday, 13 August at 16:30 UTC (09:30 PDT) in the #wikimedia-fundraising channel on the freenode network on IRC (irc://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-fundraising). You can access this using freenode's webclient, which is available at http://webchat.freenode.net/ or by using your favorite IRC client.

Hope to see you there! Philippe (WMF) 20:40, 10 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your RfA

edit

Hi there!

I just closed your RfA as not successful as it fails 1) the contact criteria menioned by Kylu on the RfA and 2) the supporting percentage is below 75% which is the required percentage to pass a RfA. I think it might be more useful for you to request temporary adminrights for the duration of the fundraiser. Thanks for understanding. -Barras 21:20, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi there again. I've granted you the admin right per the temp RfA. It will be removed on 31 January 2011. -Barras 09:30, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Kaldari, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List_of_administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

editing the interface on enwiktionary

edit

Hi. You made a recent change to [[en:wikt:mediawiki:Common.js]]. Your request for the global editinterface permission was so you could "edit Mediawiki namespace pages" on "smaller wikis". Enwikt has planty of active admins who could have made the change. I (personally; I'm not writing this as a representative of an enwikt consensus or anything) would appreciate your posting future edits to be made at [[en:wikt:WT:GP]] instead of making them (unless they're urgent) — or at least posting to the GP a notice that you had made the edits. CentralNotice/Calendar

edit

hello, I've disabled this Pune Hackathon banner because it's not on the calendar. Per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines, please ask whoever told you to create it to add it to the calendar. Nobody's fault and nothing worth any drama here, and I'm not against this banner, but people must be given the opportunity to comment it at least for a day or so; or, given that we might be late, at least some hours. Thanks, Nemo 11:28, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

If the banner is country-specific, it makes sense to send a small note to the community mailing list (in this case, the India mailing list) so that proposed centralnotice banners can be discussed on wiki. As of now, the presence of another brand ("GNUnify") alongside Wikimedia Hackathon makes me uncomfortable. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 11:32, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Automatic Transliteration for Hakka

Hi Kaldari,

I had transliterated all these Chinese characters into Romanized Hakka. It was a big effort but was completed eventually. An application was subsequently made here. However since 19 October 2013, no one has been assigned the task of compiling it. Do you know who is in charge of assigning the bugzilla programming staff?

I fear that the request could be delayed or totally forgotten for years. Could you help contact the person(s) in charge ? please. This is very important for us on Hakka Wikipedia. --Hakka (talk) 12:46, 2 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. As we used to consider messages with a language suffix other than "/zh-*" unnecessary and had those batch deleted, I have moved the page (and a few others) and removed the suffix also in the hope of users with other uselangs can at least see English. Could you kindly check if the way it is right now also works for you? Thanks. Jimmy Xu (talk) 22:25, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

They (especially some /ja and /pt-br ones) were getting stale and nobody seems to remember to update them. So at one time we went ahead to just purge them. I can understand the sidebar should at least have English, however for other parts I don't see the need for maintaining every languages locally (also since most messages have betawiki translations already). Jimmy Xu (talk) 00:49, 10 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please disregard, found out that doing this will break the display on uselang=zh. I have reverted the move and will leave this for now. Jimmy Xu (talk) 06:04, 10 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Emoji false positives with Tamil and some other Indic languages

edit

As per my email, I have added your emoji filter here as Special:AbuseFilter/110. I am getting false positives with Tamil and Bhutan character sets and I would appreciate if you would be able to provide some advice to me about how to modify the filter to allow such characters. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:50, 18 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Billinghurst: Is that because they are pasting in text from another (non-Unicode) character encoding or because they are legitimately wanting to use those Unicode characters? If it's the first, we may need to disable the global filter on those wikis and use a local one instead that gives a better warning message specific to pasting in text. If it's the second, maybe we should exempt more characters or disable the filter entirely on those wikis. Kaldari (talk) 18:03, 20 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Swwiki - discussion on article creation limitation

edit

Hi Kaldari, I appreciate very much your feedback on https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T44894. I can read it but I can for some reason not log in and contribute. I asked durng teh last days several people (Nemo bis, SJ, Geg) to copy my comments there but nobody reacted.

I would like to bring to the attention of the phabricator group that we do in fact have a huge degree of consensus amongst our active editors. At the moment statistics [2] show 15 "active editors" (+5 edits) for last month; this however comes down to 8 who are Swahili speakers (maybe plus 1??); 2 accounts have been removed meanwhile as (identical) spammer, 4 have definitely no swahili knwoledge (Small Wiki Monitoring Team, wikimedia steward on countervandalism mision, some specialized interest renaming / moving topical articles, editing photo files - FOR WHICH WE ARE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL!), and 1 account doing a number of small corrections where I am not sure if he/she has language knowledge. Our 8 (9?) "+5 monthly edits" Swahili speakers - and thus able to participate in community discussions!- consist of 5 users=admins who have been developing this wikipedia for several years, plus 3-4 others. Of these "others" 2 (or3) have never reacted to any community discussion so far.

I see on https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Limits_to_configuration_changes that you have considered discussions on enwiki with 500 participants (cf 30,789 active editors in August), on dewiki with 47 participants (cf 5,756 active editors in August), on ptwiki with 63 participants (cf 1532 active editors in August). Are these not puny percentages compared to swwiki?? If you held the others to our standard you would have to request tens of thousands (enwiki), thousands (dewiki) or at least hundreds (ptwiki) in order to talk about consensus. So I do find it demeaning if some of the phabricator participants criticised that "only 6" participated on our May decision.

Amongst our steady 5 I expect Oliver to come up as soon as he is back online. I wrote to ALL THE OTHERS but by experience am doubtful about reaction. I think we do have a problem that all of you (and I am grateful that you do that job!) come from large wikipedias and just cannot imagine how a small wikipedia works. Of course the absolute number of spam and problematic entries is small (compared to other wikis). But if you try to manage this with just 4-5 people who are not daily and sometimes not even weekly present - there is a BIG problem. If anybody is interested in small wikis - I have done some statistics on African language wikipedias but do not want to bore you now [3], [4]. Kipala (talk) 18:38, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

I assume it's because this is my first time on MetaWiki and was making a second edit in a short time. Please remove my proposal headed "Tell prospective users what Wikipedia is not for" from the "Editing" section of the wishlist survey, as it seems this is not a proposal that requires any development - the necessary facility already exists. Use of import of navpop.css in global.css doesn't behave for popups.js in global.js

edit

Hi Kaldari. I am here to be a polite PITA, especially as I saw that you did the last edit to enWP's navpop.css. And I will explain this backwards ...

When I have a local copy of navpop.css in my global.css I find that I have no issue working xwiki to utilise enWP's popups.js. Style works beautifully.

BUT when I try to import navpop.css using @import ... to the same file it imports fine, though the styling is dodgy for the background box and it is not framed nor has the background behind the popup text, it has a long list and it is transparent. I am next to clueless with styles, and cannot out figure what is wrong, nor how to give you a better diagnosis.

Can you help? Or suggest to me the place to flag this for help. It is an impediment to assist users to set up their global.js/css pages to work easily. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 06:27, 22 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Billinghurst: I imagine it is a problem with the loading order. The imported styles and the local styles at MediaWiki:Gadget-navpop.css conflict, so load order will have a significant effect on what you actually end up seeing. I imagine if MediaWiki:Gadget-navpop.css is changed to import from English Wikipedia, it will solve the problem. Thus I have proposed this at MediaWiki talk:Gadget-navpop.css. Kaldari (talk) 22:20, 23 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
The order is probably the issue, however, I am seeing problems when I do the double import of js/css [5] so it seems that the import of the css lags the display by navpops always, ie. style added to in global.css works, import of style from enWP through global.css fails for me, so I am not sure how that order differs or that it relates to the local mediawiki: file. I had previously tried direct import at enWS in common.js/.css files and had the same issue, so to me it is something about how @import and popups.js interact.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:49, 24 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 1

edit

Newsletter • July 2018

Welcome to the first issue of the Timeless newsletter! This issue is being sent or forwarded to everyone who has at some point expressed an interest in the project, give or take, as well as a couple of other potentially relevant pages, so if you would like to continue (or start) receiving this newsletter directly, please sign up for further updates on the meta page.

The news:

The Timeless grant has been selected for funding, and the project is now underway!

While I've had a somewhat slow start working on the project for health reasons, I'm pleased to announce that everything described in the proposal is now either happening, or on its way to happening.

Current progress:

  • The project now has a hub on Meta to serve as a directory for the various related pages, workboards, and local discussions and help pages. It's probably incomplete, especially with regards to specific language projects that might have local pages for Timeless, so if you know of others, please add them!
  • Outreach: I've been talking to various people and groups directly about skinning, desktop/mobile interfaces, project management, specific component support, and other things, and have begun to compile a very shoddy list of skinning problems and random issues on mw.org based on this. Some of this may inform the direction of this project, or possibly this project will result in building a more proper list that can then be used for other things. We shall see.
  • Some development - task triage, code review, bug fixing, and various rabbit holes involving ...overflows.

General plan for the future:

  • Triage the rest of the workboard.
  • Catch up with all the talkpages and other bug reports that have been left various other places that are not the project workboard
  • Do all the bug fixes/features/other things!
  • Some proposals aimed at Commons and Wikisource in particular (maybe, we'll see)

Essentially, the grant as written shall be carried out. This was the plan, and remains the plan. Timelines remain fuzzy, but while there have been some initial delays, I don't particularly expect the timeline for project as a whole to change a whole lot.

Also, for anyone at Wikimania right now: I am also at Wikimania. Come talk to me in person!

Thank you all for your interest and support thus far!

The Community Wishlist Survey

edit

Hi,

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Notice of review of adminship

edit

Hello Kaldari. In accordance with Meta:Administrators/Removal and because you have made fewer than ten logged administrator actions over the past six months, your adminship is under review at Meta:Administrators/Removal/October 2018. If you would like to retain your adminship, please sign there before December 31, 2024. Kind regards, Matiia (talk) 02:13, 2 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Central notice adminship

edit

Hi! For security reasons, the Foundation decided to remove the rights related to Central Notice adminship from regular Meta admins, so that only the special group "central notice administrators" still has them. Since you made CN-related actions in the last 12 months, WMF requested us Meta bureaucrats to add you to do this group, in order not to disturb your workflow. The announcement can be found here. Best regards --MF-W 10:43, 17 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Community Wishlist Survey 2020

edit

Hello!

You are getting this message because you've previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey, in either the Wikisource or Wiktionary categories. I wanted to let you know that this year's survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until November 11. Unlike previous years, we are only accepting proposals for non-Wikipedia content projects with no dedicated teams (i.e., Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews). You can learn more on the survey page.

You can vote on proposals from November 20 to December 2. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won't send out a separate reminder to you about that. We look forward to your participation. Thank you! IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:52, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

OSTP response

edit

Thank you for your response to the OSTP consultation on open access! I noticed it's the only one mentioning "free license", although there are some which use less precise (or more abused) terms like "open <something> license" or even the dreaded "a Creative Commons license". Your thoughts on a Drafts namespace and maybe PageTriage for scowiki?

edit

Hey Ryan! I hope you have been well. Have you talked to MJL about how to get a Drafts namespace on scowiki? Also do the installation instructions at mw:Extension:PageTriage#Installation end up with a content or non-content namespace per the Technical requirements? Thanks again! (ref; invite) Please talk to MJL about this first, because e.g. "Drafts" isn't a Scots word (but "Preliminary" is.) James Salsman (talk) 14:57, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@James Salsman and MJL: I would be happy to set up a Drafts/Preliminary namespace if there is consensus for it on the Scots Wikipedia. As far as using PageTriage, you should know that it only handles deletion nominations correctly if the wiki has a deletion nomination process that is essentially identical to English Wikipedia's. Otherwise it will probably be buggy. Kaldari (talk) 15:46, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Update: "Preliminary" is not an appropriate name. Although it appears in the Dictionary of the Scots Language with eight supporting citations, it does not occur in any authentic Scots corpus. I remain strongly in favor of a Draft namespace. Native Scots speakers have suggested "Jottin" and "Scroll". Mercat Cross discussion (scowiki's village pump.) James Salsman (talk) 21:38, 4 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@James Salsman: OK, just let me know when a consensus has been reached. Kaldari (talk) 02:14, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I regret to inform you that, in accordance with Meta:Administrators/Removal and as a result of making less than 10 edits in the last 6 months, administrator rights have been removed from your account. The relevant part of the policy reads: "Users who have made fewer than ten edits in the six months immediately prior to the designated removal date (April 1 or October 1) are desysopped without notice."
