A barnstar for you!

edit

This barnstar is given to you for your help with the 2011 fundraiser translation.

Hi! I just want to thank you and give you this barnstar for your help with the translation of the 2011 fundraiser! The fundraiser was the best we ever had, both in terms of the amount we collected and in terms of number of translations. We couldn't have done either one without the help we got from you and other translators. If you are interested, we made a report, which has some statistics about the translations.

And: I have one more request, and that is that you take this survey. You may have got an e-mail about it, and if you did, please ignore this. But if you didn't it would be great if you would take this survey too, so we can learn to improve the translation experience.

Again, thanks for your help with translations – you're awesome! Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 14:28, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Indigenous Languages

edit

Good day, I have stumble on your Small Languages Outreach Wikiproject. A group of contributors has discussed the creation of an international thematic organization for small languages. I began the stub for that project there: User:Amqui/Wikimedia Indigenous Languages. Chapters' involvement in this organization will be a key thing, so that's why I suggest we join our efforts and merge your project to this organization. I'd like to hear your ideas and suggestions on the project, and please forward the information to anybody who could be interested. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 02:02, 26 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wonderful. Although I'm not sure which languages you consider as indigenous. The current definition in Wikipedia says indigenous languages must be minorities in there original home, which means Estonian is not considered as such (but Võro should be); Finnish and Swedish are not, but all the Lapp languages, Karelian, Meä etc are; amongst Finno-Ugric languages, everything should be considered except Hungarian, Finnish and Estonian. Naturally, there is a big difference between having a state of your own and having none (or just a provincial autonomy). --Oop (talk) 19:43, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Wikimedia Indigenous Languages is mainly a platform for cooperation, so I wish we don't stick too much on definitions, we had to choose a name, and none are perfect as always. That being said, you're right that our focus is on "smaller" languages, or those under-represented on Wikimedia projects, the fact that a language has a State of its own or not, or that it's spread out between different countries, doesn't matter at all. If you have further question, don't hesitate to contact me or come on the Talk page on Wikimedia Indigenous Languages. Amqui (talk) 21:09, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thematic organization might be interesting. I must admit I do not actually know what it might feel to try to run a Wikipedia in a language that has no serious formal support at all (hey, we have an army! we can send either one tank or both! we also have a governmental language policy expert who thinks that having dialects is close to treason, I've even written a pretty sarcastic poem about him), but I know the problems of small language or cultural communities, so I'd be very much interested in hearing the experiences from "the other side". (Coming from a culture that has always been sure it has a monopoly on being small, it takes some time to understand that for most languages and cultures, you're big.) I'll take a look to it. --Oop (talk) 23:01, 1 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Good, I invite you to join the mailing list if you are interested in participating in the discussions: languages@lists.wikimedia.org. Amqui (talk) 21:46, 2 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

English/Estonian translations

edit

Dear Oop, I am contacting you to introduce myself. My name is Jessica Robell and I have recently joined the Wikimedia Foundation as a part of the fundraising team. My work will be focused to a large extent around translations. I am very interested in finding engaged Wikipedians, such as yourself, who would be interested in contributing with their time to translate shorter text from English to Estonian. I know that you have been an active translator for the fundraising campaign previous years and I would be most grateful to get your support also this year. To begin with, we have for example recently put up a 'Thank you letter' from the Wikimedia Foundation's ED Sue Gardner for translation, using the translation extension. You can find the letter here:https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=page-Fundraising%2FTranslation%2FThank+you+email+20131202&filter=&language=et&action=translate

Furthermore, in addition to using the translation extension, my aim is to develop a few personal contacts to whom I can reach out with potential questions regarding a particular word choice etc. As an engaged Wikipedia translator, I would be very interested in hearing your view on this.

Thank you very much for your support. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards, Jessica Robell Global Fundraising Coordinator Jrobell (talk) 11:51, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review

edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Update on FoP in Estonia

edit

Hello. I just visited Wikimedia Eesti's article on FoP, and since you updated it to reflect the ongoing renewed attempt to introduce FoP, how's the status of the FoP introduction attempt? I added Estonia at Freedom of Panorama#In progress FoP introduction moves. Regards, JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 09:02, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Well, our first attempt years ago got to the according commission in the parlament and fizzed out there in a somewhat amusing way that could provide material for a nice satirical short novel. Obviously, rational arguments are all fine and dandy on Wikipedia but not in politics.
This time, WMEE tried to use the initiative of the Ministry of Justice to make some amendments to the copyright law, as they occasionally do in connection to taking over various EU directives. We made a proposal for FoP and the ministry quickly shelved it, backtracking on a couple initially intended changes.
Basically, nobody wants to touch anything in the law they don't really have to because pretty much nobody knows all the nuances very well and they aren't sure any seemingly simple change won't stir up a storm in their teacup. Which prognosis could be, in fact, basically correct, because anyone knowing very little about copyright can get excited beyond rationality (as happened last time), and that, in turn, would become politically unpleasant, and political unpleasantry tends to rain down on the officials in the ministry. In Estonia, FoP has never been politically desirable for anyone, as it furthers no big business interests and brings no popular votes.
Thusly, without any political support, I don't really see it coming in my lifetime (in the next 50 years max). There are some more optimistic people in WMEE but their optimism hasn't convinced me yet. But as an outside expert now, I have agreed to assist i any way they need in the futile, utterly hopeless fight in the bleak wasteland that is copyright politics. --Oop (talk) 09:25, 15 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
*Sigh* unfortunate, indeed. FoP movements do seem to be harder to fight these recent years. Kosovo was the last successful country to introduce FoP after they aligned their law to EU standards in 2023, removing non-commercial restrictions. That was without a single FoP movement, though, and fuelled by Kosovo's desire to become an EU member someday.
Even now, South African Wikimedians are facing challenges from their President himself, who sent the "Copyright Amendment Bill" to the Court for ultimate verdict, claiming the bill may be unconstitutional and may violate treaties with the authors' societies in the U.S. and elsewhere (though much of the opposition is to the fair use clause which was also supported by Wikimedia ZA).
We here in the Philippines are facing the challenge of the lack of attention to the bills with FoP clauses, in part due to heavy political tension here now. Most of the stakeholders here are supporting other bills that only focus on site-blocking provision (more details at Pilipinas Panorama Community/Freedom of Panorama/Progress). In my point of view, Wikimedia Commons may be safe from being site-blocked since Commons routinely deletes images showing recent artworks and buildings from our country. It is English Wikipedia that may not sit well with some architects here (enwiki being the most-accessed Wikimedia site here), though site-blocking would only work if there's an actual complaint from the infringed party. Whether a hypothetical complaint from a Filipino architect vs. enwiki, still remains to be seen though. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 12:05, 15 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
