WikiTeam dumps update

Hello, thanks for the interest in https://archive.org/details/wiki-archivesorgau . It's not possible to give access to individual items, so if you want to update regularly then you can just create your item, with the same metadata, and we'll add it to the WikiTeam collection at some point. --Nemo 06:26, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

@Nemo bis: Oh cool, no worries, I'll do that. Thanks! And am I correct in thinking that I should just update the one item over time, and not create new ones for each new dump? Sam Wilson 06:52, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
@Nemo bis: Could you please add https://archive.org/details/ArchivesWiki20170823 to the WikiTeam collection? Sam Wilson 10:48, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Transcribing the BHL (Biodiversity Heritage Collection)

I would love the BHL collection to be transcribed. Currently each user of this collection must each transcribe a text if he/she wants to use it. (The best that BHL offers to start you off is OCR which is unbelievably appalling). Can Wikisource come to some arrangement with BHL and get on with this task? MargaretRDonald (talk) 19:47, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

@MargaretRDonald: Is the Biodiversity Heritage Collection this: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org ? Because it looks like those book scans are from the Internet Archive (e.g. this book is this one on IA). And yes, it's certainly possible to add these to Wikisource! There's more information at wikisource:Help:Internet Archive. Please come over the wikisource:Wikisource:Scriptorium with any questions you have, and we'll be very happy to help. Note also that there are a few properties on Wikidata relating to the BHL, such as "BHL bibliography ID (P4327)", so it's possible to create a report of what works are on Wikisource, if you're interested. Sam Wilson 22:40, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, Sam, I'll give it a try MargaretRDonald (talk) 08:27, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
I have now looked at "BHL bibliography ID (P4327)" and it leaves me none the wiser as to how to proceed. Do you have an example (and/or a set of instructions). And most of the texts I am interested in are in Latin.... MargaretRDonald (talk) 08:31, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
@MargaretRDonald: I'd be very happy to step through getting one of these works set up for proofreading. Do you have one particular in mind? If it's latin, then it should go on Latin Wikisource ("est textuum quacumque lingua scriptorum thesaurus, qui aut in "dominio publico" sint aut sub Licentia Liberae Documentationis GNU prolati"). Would you like to learn the process? (It's not hard.) Or shall I set it up ready for proofreading for you? :) Sam Wilson 08:56, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
@Samwilson: I tapped my way through to Robert Brown/s "On the Proteaceae of Jussieu and started in (foolishly)- the pages which had not been started went immediately to the English wikisource despite being in Latin .... So that probably needs to be fixed (pp.49-54)MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:36, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
@Samwilson: With respect to using BHL pages directly, I would prefer to learn the process, if you are happy with that. MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:36, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 2

The second issue of the Timeless newsletter is out.

The news: Themes are coming to Timeless! Your infobox and navbox templates in particular are probably going to look absolutely horrible in the new built-in night mode.

For more information, background, plans and progress updates, please see the full issue on Meta, complete with a ridiculous list of phabricator task links, gratuitous mention of other skins, and me complaining about the current state of MediaWiki skinning in general.

The Community Wishlist Survey

Hi,

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 3

Newsletter • December 2018

Welcome to the third issue of the Timeless newsletter, complete with a somewhat dubious explanation of where I've been all this time.

Somewhat dubious explanation of where I've been all this time:

I suffered a rather bad concussion in October, which knocked me pretty much completely out of commission through November, and I'm still recovering even now. One person = bus factor of one, even though it wasn't actually a bus but a very short flight of stairs.

Updates:

  • Random bugs have been fixed. More bugs have been found. For a full list of horrors, see the workboard.
  • Implementing themes (T131991: the dark/night mode and winter variants of the skin) has proven far more complicated than initially thought, lacking either the extension, or preferably, some core support for this functionality. Thus:
    • I have submitted a Request for Comment proposing to merge Extension:Theme into core - this will enable skins to specify style variants as distinct options for users to select in their preferences by letting the skin specify the styles separately for each, a much neater way of implementing this than some of the existing hacks.
    • Jack Phoenix has already submitted a patch to do this. We simply need the buy-in and consensus to merge it, and to resolve whatever issues may arise from this wider review.

Comments on the RfC (MediaWiki wiki RfC page, task) or bugs, or further reports, are always appreciated.

Until next time, hopefully with no further injuries,

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 4

Newsletter • April 2019

Welcome to the fourth issue of the Timeless newsletter, with a cat! Or maybe not.

Un chat qui miaule???

It's true! The angry cat, a fundamental part of Timeless, has resulted in confusion and bug reports all across the projects and phabricator. And now it shall be immortalised forever in the new, shiny Timeless logo.

Updates:

After putting off the project for three months because I got hit in the head with a flight of stairs, and then putting off the project for another two months while working out what the status of the grant was, I have now put off the project even more in order to focus on my other project for a bit. So progress lately has been a bit whims-based as a result:

Radar:

  • The French Wiktionary voted to set Timeless as their default skin, with results possibly as you might expect: I ran away and hid, and the WMF said no. A bit of discussion later and we largely agreed that all else aside, this is a bit of a branding issue, but we love the enthusiasm! Also the bug reports that inevitably come out of such a discussion. I'm still working on properly going through those.
  • Theme support is still stuck in limbo, but now we have another skinning RfC. tl;dr, we wanna replace the entire skinning system, and Skizzerz'll write a prototype later.

I will be fully resuming work on Timeless next week, or maybe the week after, depending on what madness (or illness) comes out of the Hackathon in Prague. Please come talk to me there to discuss strategy!

CC-BY 3.0 (AU)

Hi, Sam.

  1. I found and downloaded an image in ALA with a CC-BY 3.0 (AU) licence. When I came to upload it to commons, I could not list this licence and provide a link. I am hoping this can be fixed as currently I am in breach of the licence conditions.
  2. It would be great if when uploading a file the option ALA might be given (just as there is an option to upload Flickr images (from anyone) provided the licence is correct.

Cheers MargaretRDonald (talk) 18:05, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

  • @MargaretRDonald: I'm afraid I'm not familiar with ALA; what is it? To fix the file's copyright statement you should be able to edit the file's page and add the commons:Template:Cc-by-3.0-au template in place of the generic one. Not all templates are available in the pre-populated list in UploadWizard, but you can always click "Another reason not mentioned above" and then you can enter whatever copyright template you want. —Sam Wilson 22:38, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Sam. I'll have a go. (ALA is the Atlas of Living Australia).MargaretRDonald (talk) 22:47, 9 July 2019 (UTC) Done. Thanks very much, Sam. MargaretRDonald (talk) 22:52, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 5

Newsletter • August 2019

Welcome to the fifth and final issue of the Timeless newsletter!

Progress was made. True story.

I am happy to announce that after about a year, this delightful project in which absolutely nothing has gone according to plan is coming to a close. Or at least, the grant-funded portion is. Which means we will now be resuming our regular schedule of random whims-based development, you probably won't notice any difference whatsoever unless you use MonoBook, and there's a report.

What's new from the past two months:

A lot less than we'd hoped, frankly. We:

We also wound up with:

  • Patches resulting in RelatedArticles working in MonoBook, and FlaggedRevisions showing up in Minerva, unless someone actually managed to turn that off as well. (Blame T181242.) It's possible we went a little overboard with the whole 'let's close all the tasks!' sprint.
  • An unfortunate repeated discovery that themes (the Night/Winter variants I keep insisting will happen at some point) are still pretty far off on the horizon. Um.
  • Possibly a quite a few more bugs coming your way. This month, and especially the past week, have been a bit of a mess, development-wise. While hopefully none of the worse issues make it to production, please keep the reports coming for whatever you do find and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can. Y'all've been amazing about this, and it's really appreciated.

And I guess that's that. I'm really bad at reporting, and this is a report. For the purposes of the grant, this was a requirement, but do you want me to keep trying to send these out?

Community Wishlist Survey 2020

Hello!

You are getting this message because you've previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey, in either the Wikisource or Wiktionary categories. I wanted to let you know that this year's survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until November 11. Unlike previous years, we are only accepting proposals for non-Wikipedia content projects with no dedicated teams (i.e., Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews). You can learn more on the survey page.

You can vote on proposals from November 20 to December 2. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won't send out a separate reminder to you about that. We look forward to your participation. Thank you! IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:52, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

I think you asked a question about a suggestion I recently submitted, but I don't know how to flag my reply to your attention. Now I can't get even get back to that place to find the correct link.

unknown bands category

thanks for informing me about moving my idea for a new category to the Archive. To me it wasn't obvious the request for input was about tech only.

I do hope that my idea can get forward within the Wiki environment... of course the most important facts and artists come first. But to simply forget (deny) any other artist is a bit harsh and commercial thinking.

dear Sam Wilson,

Instead of simply killing ideas, by way of archiving, you COULD have put this idea in a 'Wikipedia content discussion' page.

Fact is that you didn't. What would you think if ppl did this to you? How do you think I now feel about you, or your wikipedia surveys?

I hope, pray and wish there will be alternatives for wikipedia, facebook and other big headed high-horse sites.

All I want is less attention to the already overloaded top artists, and more to lesser known. A more level playing field.

Can you understand this, and maybe share your views?

Bas — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Basvossen (talk) 23:18, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Bas, I'm sorry you felt that I was killing your idea by declining it. That wasn't my intention at all: the issue is that it's not an idea that's suitable for the Wishlist Survey, not that it's a bad idea! Wishlist items are all about small areas of software development that will improve things for wiki contributors. Your idea of finding a home for content relating to less well-known bands is not something that we can work on. You might perhaps be interested in Wikispore, a project which is partly aiming to tackle this question of where to put content that doesn't fit on the current Wikimedia projects; maybe you could discuss there the addition of a "music spore"? Search not in this category - Commons User script review

Hi Sam, it works like a charm and could be a named tool for many helpers because of its game changing ease of use. 5 Thumbs up. There is one issue that I would like to mention. This is that it works fine the very first time, but after moving a lot of files downward the renewed search still shows a lot of false positives. Cached serverside it seems. I'm not sure what to do about it on my side, except waiting for a few days and do a final check later. I tried to purge the maincat and the subcats, and tried to clear my browser cache. Both to no effect. This issue is of more weight when very many files and cats are involved. What's your advice? I could wait and revisit if it is a known issue, but would prefer to finish the job the same day. Is there a trick, workaround or scripted solution? Thank you. - One could for example do a new test here. I find lots of limbo items this way. Peli (talk) 08:33, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

@Pelikana: Yes, I think it is just a caching issue, and so there's not much to be done other than wait. Has it resolved in the last day or so? I agree that it's pretty annoying to not be able to keep working and have things update as you go! And thank you for alerting me to this technique; I'm also finding things to categorize. Sam Wilson 00:41, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Hi Sam, yes it resolved. Since I'm aware of the issue now, I just work from one main tab with max 500 files shown and keep this tab open till all items are reviewed, which is shown in my viewer by the links being tinted a bit darker. So really there is no issue for me anymore with this. The first day I tried to frequently reload inbetween and got confused a bit by the false positives. The test above is done now and gave a clear result within a few mins after finishing. Peli (talk) 01:12, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
@Pelikana: Oh great, that sounds workable then. :-) Sam Wilson 05:27, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Wishathon March 2024 : Adding statement on mobile devices

Hello,

I am reaching out to you because you added the "Wikidata: Adding Statements on Mobile Devices" section on the Wishathon March 2024 page. I am interested in this project, but I am unsure where to begin. Specifically:

  • What is the current version of Wikibase that now being used in Wikidata? (We would likely start working from that specific codebase.)
  • Is the functionality of adding statements already available on MobileFrontend? The page said "Adding statements already works on MobileFrontend", but as I tried to access a random item on m.wikidata.org using my phone, I was still unable to add new statements. (Although I could edit the label and description, I couldn't find the button to add/modify statements.)
  • Will we be granted access to a development server for testing purposes?

Thank you. Rtnf (talk) 09:52, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

@Rtnf: Hi! Thanks for looking at this wish! I'm not 100% across all the details of it yet, but to answer your questions: Wikidata (and all Wikimedia projects) are deployed in a weekly 'train', and you should always work from the latest master branch in Git. I think the comment about MobileFrontend is actually reversed: it works without MobileFrontend, but MF is the default view on mobile. There's more useful information and history in phab:T330820. And lastly, for testing purposes there are a few options: usually, work will be reviewed and merged by other developers, and then be available on the Beta Cluster immediately for testing and the production sites following the next train, or you can make use of patchdemo to look at patches before they're merged. Discussion is happening on the #wmhack Telegram group and on the relevant tasks on Phabricator. I assume you've already found How to become a MediaWiki hacker? Sam Wilson 04:35, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T362758

One thing I noticed is it doesn’t work when I’m on template pages. I copy some over from from the English Wikipedia to Simple but then I have to go back to English and go to wikidata and add the new template link. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 08:16, 17 April 2024 (UTC)

@PotsdamLamb: Oh good point, it doesn't work for any templates anywhere does it!? :( It's because it's only working for content namespaces and Template isn't one of them. I'll add it as an additional (Category is already handled). Sam Wilson 08:26, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks! It’s a great tool especially since I do some X-wiki vandalism work I can be on a page and use what it may link as a possible vandal with other information I am seeing. There was one other issue I had posted about on someone page which is that when you click on the new item through the interface it brings up a nice interface and enough to fill in to make it worthy. But if nothing comes (which has happened) I have to go to WD and do a basic create of an object. Typically only templates but I do a lot of work in a special category on my home wiki I work out of. It would be nice to have uniformity. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 08:38, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
@PotsdamLamb: I've made a patch for Template NS. And as for creating a new item when there's no search results, that's phab:T361834 and the work for that is done and will be deployed soon. Sam Wilson 10:52, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. I also subscribed to the task you mention. I appreciate it. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 10:55, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
It also doesn’t work in mobile. I never tried it until just now. It won’t pop up but that could be due to the “newest and greatest” cellphones and built in settings. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 11:00, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
@PotsdamLamb: Templates should now be working! :) Can you test and let me know? And yeah, it doesn't work at the moment on mobile; is that important to you? I could maybe look into sorting it out, but I think at the moment it's a low priority. Sam Wilson 02:01, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
I do use my mobile a lot because I am on the move and at SEWP we get a lot of articles not linked to their object. I can try templates later today when I’m at a computer. Thanks for the notification and I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 07:31, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Hi there. Hope your day is going well. So it does show, however, it needs to search only in wikidata items that have template. I did one test and it brought up everything, except for anything that begins with "Template:." I think perhaps, it should also be restricted to only search for items that start with "Template" as all templates start with that. For example, see Q20365900. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 21:33, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Issue So I just noticed that it is now not pulling up datalinks and instead taking me directly to create a new item. Example: Gill (Punjabi Clan) when clicking on the shortcut should pop up results, but it does not. When I do a search I do find the item for it at Q5561912. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 21:46, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Also, I am wondering, if the item is already linked, can we eliminate the pop-up that says "This article is already linked to an item?" Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 22:17, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Good point about restricting it to templates only; that's going to happen at some point, see phab:T360187. And when you say it's not pulling up datalinks do you mean there are no search results? I can't test your example because it's now linked! :) But are you seeing the same on e.g. s:Author:Paul Myron Wentworth Linebarger? And good idea about not showing it if it's already linked; I'll make a task for that (or maybe it's part of phab:T362591). Sam Wilson 00:29, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
I cannot send you a screen shot on here, so give me a few to put it somewhere so you can see it. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 00:33, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
Check your email as I do not want the link public. Thanks, and be well! - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 00:38, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
