Not necessarily

Not necessarily but I mostly want to have a discussion on what the actual state is and how it should be treated. More of a clarification of the global lock because of the changing circumstances on how Stewards approach the matter. I put a message on the global ban talk page and received no responses. I assumed that area would be more direct and to the point. Does that make sense? :) Ottava Rima (talk) 03:09, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I didn't notice your comment, but I see it now. At the moment a global lock will be given to abusive usernames, users who are vandalising and/or spamming crosswiki or are abusing multiple accounts crosswiki. And that means in most cases long-term vandals. I don't think this way of handling global locks has been changed by the years. Regards, Trijnstel 21:45, 6 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, in the specific case, Proab was blocked for incivility related problems. I don't know if they want to just treat it as a global ban or how. I just find it a question that might want to be addressed at some point. Ottava Rima (talk) 03:48, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Imo it's not wrong to ask for a second opinion after an almost two year long global lock, but I think he would've been locked now too. Trijnstel 16:27, 9 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Reversion on Gwen Gale RFC

I consider this an inappropriate use of rollback, and thus I have reverted you. If you wish to revert my change please justify your reversion. Eraserhead1 (talk) 23:20, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I thought it's obvious. Nemo, a local administrator (just like me), closed the RfD. Then you're not supposed to "just" re-open it. Trijnstel (talk) 14:31, 21 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Spam accounts on mw

Hi, Trijnstel. I'm a bit late as you just removed CU rights (sorry for that), but you might want to check also this account (perhaps you already did it). Its spam pattern is similar with this. Thank you.” Teles (T @ L C S) 10:01, 22 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Teles. No problem at all. I performed a CheckUser and Logodesignbuzz and Thongkaka27 are   Unrelated. I did locally block Thongkaka26 however as a sock of Thongkaka27 and I blocked the underlying IP address on mediawikiwiki for a week too. Logodesignbuzz didn't use any more accounts. Hi

I have been a long member of Wiki in general, exactly is since 2008. I have been contribute mainly in Vietnamese Wikipedia and Vietnamese Wiktionary and currently a sysop in vi Wiktionary. I just started to contribute in English Wikipedia for few months then i entangled myself into many blocks due to accusation of insulting people. Part of it is the natural of culture's conflict. Like i said many times to them, in my culture what i said will not considered as insult. I have never vandal once since i joined Wikipedia. [1]. As you can see, after many years of contributing in Vi Wikipedia and Wiktionary, i have never been blocked before. That says something about me. I want no trouble nor do i wish to cause trouble. My wish is just the same as most people here that it is i'm trying my best to make Wiki as best as possible. It all started when i went to English Wikipedia and culture conflict started. They have blocked me permanently now and this is their reason "You have been blocked indefinitely from editing post your refusal to admit the initial mistake and statement that you shall continue the same line of arguments as before than changing the same". I would call this dictator? They tried to force me to live by their culture, this is not wiki for. Wiki is not just for English users, it's for ALL people in the world with all CULTURES! Isn't it? I think i have been abused. Hope you can help me fight for justice. If you have time, you're welcome to read all the discussions and arguments related to my blocks. I have nothing to hide, it's all there. I'm clearly being provoked by countless of sysops (obviously they are all friends to each other and tried to protect each other). As you can see a bunch of sysops have nothing to do with me but went to my talk page and provoked me and made up excuses to blocked me. Plus for 3 times they blocked me for about 1 or 2 weeks. I think you should review them too. It's not even fair, they just simply tried to shut my mouth since they can't argue with me. Hope i have found a correct person to ask for help. Watcher list

Hi Trijnstel, you recently added me to the Watcher user list. It worked at first, but now when I try to use it I get a "Sorry, you're not on the access list" message. Can you check that I'm still properly registered please?
Also, you suggested that I should get a SUL account. I've got one mostly working now, but it won't recognise my MediaWiki account - the password must be different (I'm not sure how because I don't think I've ever used it). I've left a message at the MediaWiki Support Desk, but no one has responded. I'm not sure if it's the right place though. Can you advise?
Thanks, Bazonka (talk) 19:39, 26 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Comment My apologies for the delay. A response will follow soon. Trijnstel (talk) 22:52, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi Bazonka. Here are the answers to your questions:
1) You're still on this list with all people who have access to the watcher user list. So it should work...
2) Your account "Bazonka" is unified, except for mediawikiwiki. This is most likely because you're not that person. You should ask a renaming (usurpation as it's called) of the local bureaucrats of mediawikiwiki: mw:Project:Requests#Requests for renames. If you need help with that, feel free to ask of course. Good luck!
Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 23:09, 9 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've cracked it. I was logging in as "bazonka", whereas it was only recognizing "Bazonka". For some reason it kept changing the B into a b, but I've managed to get past it now. Thanks for the advice with Mediawiki - I'll raise it with the bureacrats. Bazonka (talk) 17:07, 10 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Answering

Hi, I understand you think I was ignoring what happened, but for sure I was ashamed about that; bringing it to my personal life, when something bad or tragic happens, I try not to think about it for some time and after give a solution, avoiding deciding fastly. It might be a different way to deal with problems, okay, I made a mistake and take charge of it. Earlier, I apologized in IRC, however as it's difficult to remember you were there, I need to apologize to you now, a true sorry. PS: This is a copy I sent to Snowolf, you wanted to know the same thing. --Luckas msg 15:59, 9 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Apologies accepted. :-) And indeed, I did think you didn't care about it all and ignored us. Now I understand why you did it and it's completely understandable. Please don't worry about it anymore. As I said, anyone can make mistakes (I made some huge mistakes myself too; both as an admin on the Dutch Wikipedia and as a steward), but as a long as you learn from them it's not a big deal. Take care and good luck from now on! Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 23:09, 9 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Misbruikfilters

Super!

Mvg,

Tim, Timboliu (talk) 18:25, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hoi Tim/Timboliu. Trijnsteltalk 18:35, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sysop (administrator) request on Ido.wiki

Hello, Trijnstel,

I've created this page on Ido wiki for others to manifest their approval or not concerning my request to be a sysop there. Is it the kind of page needed, in this case? Best regards, Joao Xavier (talk) 22:42, 12 May 2012 (UTC) (sorry if my English is not so good).Reply

Hi Joao Xavier. Thanks for providing me this information! I added the link to SRP - see here. Please make sure the other editors of io.wikipedia see your RfA and are able to vote (i.e. post it in the local village pump). Your request is on hold for a week, until 19 May. Good luck in advance. शंतनू is most unwanted person

Hello, Trijnstel,

How come you have given continuation for admin rights to शंतनू on mr@wikisource. He has given wrong information to you. He is most unwanted person and lot many members are shouting against his working on Marathi community. Please look in to the matter. Thanks

Neetin kadu (talk) 08:59, 14 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Neetin kadu. Could you please provide some evidence of what you're saying? I gave the admin rights to शंतनू for another six months as he started a local discussion on mr.wikisource - he didn't receive supports nor opposes, but as it was there for a week now I assumed it was okay. I'm willing to listen to you and to revoke the rights, but not without some evidence of course... Thanks in advance for your understanding. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 10:10, 14 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I was unable to locate any complaints either on his extension request or his talk page. I also notice that you're not active on mrwikisource, unless I'm mistaken, the circumstances leave me a bit puzzled. I would suggest that discussing the matter with the user himself would be an appropriate measure, or pointing us to where the matter has already been discussed. I have also notified the user that concerns have been raised regarding the extension so that he can fully comment here should s/he wish to do so. Snowolf How can I help? 15:51, 14 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Snowolf

What Neetin Kadu says is correct. शंतनू is a controversial member on Marathi community. As mr@source did not have village pump all the discussions are happening on mr.wikipedia village pump and where there are lot many members have issues against him. One reason is probably he has no experience of wiki community and roles and rules and trying to do experiments for self learning. Check his editing experience on all Wikipedia community at the time he has given first admin ship one can easily understand. -Hari.hari (talk) 02:55, 15 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

If that's the case - several discussions on the village pump of mrwiki (mr:विकिपीडिया:चावडी/प्रगती) - then could you please provide us a few links to them? Trijnsteltalk 20:45, 16 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Delete?

What's the deal, Trijnstel?

I look for information on a topic, not finding anything, I create an account and add a stub. When I go back to add some information I found, I find that the article is deleted. When I ask why on the discussion page, the discussion page is deleted and so is my account?

How is this supposed to encourage community contributions? I would have to describe my first interaction with the wikipedia community as: "Hostile". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Christopherprice (talk) 21:45, 18 May 2012‎

I suggest you to take a look at your user talk before complaining. I quote Savh: "This is not Wikipedia, please see Meta:About. Wikipedia is here." Trijnsteltalk 22:02, 18 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Update: I really hope to get some feedback. Perhaps I owe you an apology about my account deletion as it may have just been part of the username change process (It seems that my request to change my username to ChristopherPrice was completed).

Aventicum (talk) 20:42, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Graag gedaan. Trijnsteltalk 20:51, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey Trijnstel. I just performed the block and answered you there. Again, thanks for your help with spambots ! :-) -- Quentinv57 (talk) 05:19, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
For your info, I've blocked it on strategy.wiki and requested local blocks on old.wikisource and species.wiki. According to the various logs, he tried to spam there as well. I'm not 100% sure the pl.wiki account is also related, by the way. Cheers, Mathonius (talk) 06:42, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I checked him on the last three wikis (strategywiki, specieswiki and sourceswiki), but I absolutely have no idea how we can stop him. Too many different dynamic IPs and other information which differs. He can't be locked and I can't globally block an IP or range sadly. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 12:10, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I found both because of IRC global lock requests of Special:CentralAuth/Carolynross09 (openwavecomp.com) and Special:CentralAuth/Jhonreymobescart (goldsgear.com). Template:Offtopic

Hello Trijnstel! I saw you've reverted this my edit, actually I was convinced that that change was good for everyone. I removed the signature because that is the only template here on meta that includes already it (on mediawiki for example the signature isn't included on the template), so I did it in order to standardize it with the other ones too. Furthermore, for me for instance it's not so useful the signature preset seeing that I'm used to pressing this button   by now so that 2 signatures are shown (maybe for you it is, since you don't use that template so often -being a sysop-). If there's no problem, I think the signature may be removed. Regards, :) --Frigotoni ...i'm here; 13:43, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well, actually, I *do* use this template very often. It doesn't matter if I'm an admin or not; I just inform people of a page of them I deleted. And this is not the only template on meta which contains an automatic signature. The template {{spam}} has this too. I like the automatic signature as it's quick and easy. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 13:51, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ok, no problem :). As if I had not said anything. Thanks anyway. --Frigotoni ...i'm here; 14:08, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Amazon IP blocks

Hi Trijnstel! I've been using my Amazon Kindle Fire to use Dab Solver to edit. Even when I'm logged in to my account, I've been getting occasional errors saying the IP address has been blocked. The IP addresses are not always the same. How can I continue to edit on the Kindle Fire without getting this error? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 04:25, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Could you please leave me a {{talkback}} message on en.wikipedia when you reply? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 04:28, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ask for global IP block exemption at Steward requests/Global permissions if it says "Your IP address has been blocked on all wikis."--Jasper Deng (talk) 04:50, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi GoingBatty. Several large ranges of the Amazon Web Services are globally blocked for infinity since July 2010 because of cross-wiki trojan/spam attacks. Unfortunately I can't unblock those ranges, but I have another solution. Could you please post the exact block message you get/got on this page, my user talk page? Therefore I can validate it and give you a global IP exempt if it's correct. After that you can continue editing. Thanks for your understanding. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 12:41, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the quick response. Last night was the first time I received the errors. I'll have to do some testing when I'm logged in (and not logged in) to duplicate the issue, and then hope I can copy & paste from the Kindle Fire. I'm also reading your edit notice, so I'll first check the Fire's browser's proxy setting.
While I definitely appreciate any exemptions you would make just for me, I hope that we could take steps to ensure that Wikipedia would not be "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit (unless you're using a Kindle Fire)". I'm concerned that many people, especially IPs making their first edits, won't understand all the steps necessary to request an exemption and just give up. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 14:52, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
I understand your concerns, but due to the large amount of spam we receive every day we have to block ranges (+some legit users). Trijnsteltalk 14:59, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Luckily, I was unable to duplicate the issue yesterday. When I wasn't logged in, my edits were saved under a Comcast IP. When I was logged in, I didn't get the error. Hopefully it was a one time issue - in which case I apologize for overreacting. If I get the errors again, I will let you know. Thanks for your kind explanations, and happy editing! Can I ask you a question?

Before reading it, I'm sorry if I have an inappropriateness of expressions. I'm not english speaker, Please understand me.

I am only active user in one inactive wiki. If I want to have a temporary mop(for maintenance, etc), I can do steward request. But, I confused, local crat exists. He is just inactive in it, active in another wiki. However, because I'm only active user, election discuss is impossible. What can I do? I have possible that I can request steward requesting? Otherwise, I request temporary permisson to local crat? --Sotiale (Talk·Contribs) 01:38, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sotiale. It doesn't matter that you don't perfectly speak English - I understand you. :) I assume you're talking about the Korean Wikisource (ko.wikisource), right? That project has five admins and one bureaucrat. I advice you to make a local announcement of your request for admin rights on the local village pump or request for adminship page. After you did that, please add your request to Steward requests/Permissions#Administrator access. It usually lasts a week before we decide if we grant the rights or not. After that week we can give you the admin rights if the bureaucrat isn't active. If you still have any questions left, feel free to ask them of course. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 18:52, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your considerate reply :) Korean Wikisource can request for adminship (because of at least 3 active users exist). I already run for adminship discussion. local crat on the Korean Wikisource is long inactive (His final activity is 2007), I will do steward request.. :) That is Korean Wikiquote, 1 crat and 2 admins exist. Korean Wikiquote has 3 active editing users(1 month, including my edit). But, other 2 users edit count is 9, and rarely connects it. I already made a local announcement on the local village pump. "Please leave the message if you see it. If any users and administrator do not exist here, I will request temporary adminship." I assume that I cannot run for permanent adminship discussion, because there is no users. Although I make a local request, anyone will not see it. my thinking is right? --Sotiale (Talk·Contribs) 07:08, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yup, you're right. But you can get admin rights for a longer period, let's say a year. Please provide a link to your local request on SRP btw. Trijnsteltalk 09:56, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
You mean such case that anybody cannot discuss about adminship (because any users don't exist)? longer period a local announcement(for example, 1 year announcement but anyone didn't discuss) is possible getting admin flag? and Wikisource discussion started July 13. as far as I know, request condition is at least 1 week. Before then, request is impossible. right? therefore, I will request July 20 :) I'm so sorry to ask you many questions. I concern that It's like annoying things... --Sotiale (Talk·Contribs) 10:36, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh no, you don't have to wait a year to get the rights. I mean you can *get* the rights for a year. So please request it on 20 July. :) Trijnsteltalk 10:45, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I understand :) I will request about result of adminship discussion in wikisource July 20. Because I made Wikiquote local announcement July 17, I will request about temporary adminship of wikiquote July 24. Thank so much.. :) Have a good time! --Sotiale (Talk·Contribs) 10:53, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ghybu. If there is a local consensus, you could post a request on the Stewards' noticeboard or ask any individual steward or global sysop for their help. Could you please tell me if that consensus exists? This change applies to all users of cbkwiki, so we need to know if other active users agree with it. Admin abuse in Armenian wiki

  Resolved.

Hello Trijnstel, my account in the Armenian wiki has been locked for a year. I think that the lock is not fair and an admin has abused its powers. Before that I was blocked only for three days. Tell me where I can challenge their blockage. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 188.115.249.187 (talk) 21:32, 17 July 2012‎

You should contact the local admin who blocked you. No reply? - contact other admins. Then the arbcom and as a last solution you may file an RFC. Trijnsteltalk 22:34, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
I asked this question on the forum (Village pump), because there is no arbitration committee armenian wiki. But I'm more interested in RFS, can you clarify a little bit what it is?--46.241.198.255 09:03, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Before I explain everything, may I first ask what your user name is and who blocked you on the Armenian Wikipedia? Trijnsteltalk 09:56, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, my user name is David1992.--178.78.174.110 15:04, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yesterday your account (hy:User:David1992) was blocked for another year shortly after the 1-year-block expired. The block reason in itself was quite long and contains stuff like "active in an edit war, non-constructive behaviour and ignoring warnings". I pointed the admin who blocked you (Xelgen) to this topic. Trijnsteltalk 15:17, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
No Trijnstel, I was not previosly blocked for 1 year.--46.241.231.85 17:11, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, no, you're right. I'm sorry. I didn't notice the unblock log entry. Trijnsteltalk 17:20, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Second block was a mistake, and it was corrected (unblocked) by admin a year ago.--46.241.231.85 17:24, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
I simply want that the question of my long blocking was discussed and that other users could express their opinion on this issue. Тhere isn't an arbitration committee, admin removed my discussions from the forum, I can not dispute the lock any where except my talk page.--46.241.231.85 17:22, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
As it became clear for me after the discussion at the forum, many participants did not support the actions of that admin.--46.241.231.85 17:57, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
He was also been involved in some conflicts with other users before.--46.241.231.85 17:59, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

The situation is being misrepresented by the blocked user. The main point of contention is not about the validity of the block, but its length. The admin who blocked this user is in good standing on hywikipedia, both as an admin and as a wikicitizen. This user, on the other hand, has been involved in a number of repeated questionable actions before, and suffice it to say that a quarter of the discussions on his talk page are warnings from admins. In short - there is no outstanding situation here, and the length of block issue can be fully resolved within the local community. ― Teak (talk) 04:54, 19 July 2012 (UTC) (one of the longest admins on the project)Reply

Good. I'll mark this request as resolved then. Trijnsteltalk 20:35, 19 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Blocking 176.31.0.0/16

Hello there,

Your IP address has been blocked on all wikis. The block was made by Trijnstel (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy: please email stewards@wikimedia.org if you're affected by this block.

   Start of block: 18:27, 31 July 2012
   Expiry of block: 18:27, 31 July 2013

You can contact Trijnstel to discuss the block. You cannot use the "E-mail this user" feature unless a valid e-mail address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it. Your current IP address is 176.31.26.4. Please include all above details in any queries you make.

It seems there is a second block:

Editing from 176.31.0.0/16 has been blocked (disabled) by Zzuuzz for the following reason(s):

Because my provider is assigning IP addresses at random, it would be nice if you could unblock 176.31.26.0/24 or just my user. Thank you! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by MrScoville (talk) 13:58, 18 August 2012‎

Hi MrScoville. As you were using a hotspot which was globally blocked by me, you weren't able to edit. I gave you a global-ipblock-exempt, so that problem should now be solved. You provided a second block though and that one is on the English Wikipedia. You should disable the proxy (changing the settings to "no proxy" should immediately lift the block, see also No open proxies) and/or request a local ip-block-exempt on the specific projects. Here you can see a list of all projects were this IP/range is blocked at the moment (fawiki, dewiki, nlwiki, enwiki and ruwiki at the moment). Good luck with it! Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 14:08, 18 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Multiple abuses and defamation by French Wikipedia administrator

Hello Trijnstel,

I wish to inform you about this message here, as well as this. I will appreciate your comments. My user account on the French WP is Yoav1D3. Best regards, 81.218.206.83 15:16, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

If I understand it correctly admins Ludo29 (+OS) and JPS68 are misbehaving? Please start a RFC, but you should know we aren't a global arbcom. Trijnsteltalk 15:34, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes this is the point, but the attitude of Ludo29 is secondary as it involves only a judgement on a technical point, the validity of the 3RR that I affixed on the two pages in which were an edit war, although I consider that his view point on the matter is unbalanced and his accusation that I was involved myself in the edit war is baseless, I would'nt bother you neither initiate an RFC for that. As for JPS68 the matter is different, this administrator made very serious accusations of bias in several occasions against contributors engaged in editing articles about the israeli-palestinian conflict. Theses accusations were often accompanied by offensive remarks and, in one specific case, beside a false accusation, with a hurtful words game on the "Crystal Night". Therefore, following your advice and as I intended to do I will start in the coming days, probably next week, a RFC in which I will detail solely all theses accusations of pro-israeli bias and offensive remarks made by French WP's administrator JPS68. Thank you for your reply and your attention. Best regards, Yoav 81.218.206.83 23:00, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I should note that, as pointed out in the last comment of the first section you linked, that stewards can do almost nothing unless the French Wikipedia community itself agrees on administrator abuse. I realize that this is a very contentious subject and people get very stressed over it, and that the comment in your last diff is somewhat escalating of the issue, but unless the local community agrees that the admin should be desysopped, Meta can do very little to help your cause.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:23, 22 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hello again. This is to inform you that I had decided to postpone my RFC in order to give a chance to dialogue with JPS68 as I've been asked by Creasy (diff) and request him, on his talk page, to substantiate his allegations. Meanwhile a new RAA involving this administrator has been filled out concerning the same issue and contributors than the previous one which brought me here. Therefore, I will wait till the resolution of this RAA before I'll contact him. i will keep you updated. Best regards, Yoav,81.218.206.83 11:43, 30 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Dear anonymous user. The block you mentioned, was given by user Bastique (a former steward). He globally blocked several ranges in July 2010; nine in total. All for infinity and all for the same reason: "Cross-wiki spam: Amazon Web Services - Service has been used for trojan/spam attacks - Little or no good edits - Please email info@wikimedia.org if you are affected by this block". I do have access to OTRS, but not to info@wikimedia.org if I'm not mistaken. I think it will be best to email to the email address given and ask them for help. It's not a good idea to unblock these for now. Thanks for your understanding. If you have any further questions, please ask. Trijnsteltalk 12:49, 6 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Question!

I expect that you give me a lot of help, as before.. :) Although I want to take a rest, I'm forced to work... :(

Ko-wikinews have implemented Global Bot policy(local bot policy page, including some English explanation). But I find kowikinews is not global bot approval wiki(Wikisets). As far as I know, Stewards can change Wikisets without bugzilla request. I think.. perhaps stewards need kowikinews consensus, right? If you need consensus for accept request, I will notify community and bring consensus 10 days later. Sotiale (talk) 07:39, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

+inquiring further: I saw three accounts are locked (이창영, 억울하당께, DangsumM: reason; long-term abuse). These accounts are surely evil puppets(they attacked one user for groundless condemnation), but these just attacked kowiki, not multiple wikis. It is best lock(my private opinion), but I don't know account lock criteria. Sotiale (talk) 11:29, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

+inquiring more further(Oh, my.. it is my rudeness, because of many question. sorry): You and billinghurst suggest me about GR, But I cannot fully understand why GR right suggested. I translated GR for Korean(Global rollback/ko), but my opinion, I didn't meet GR criteria. I think, GR works are.. monitor many wikis and report vandal, etc.. But No I has ever done that. I'm confused. Sotiale (talk) 11:55, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

+fourth question(....) : If ko-wikinews elect new admin exempt me, a problem is raised? I presume stewards don't grant right, Because ko-wikinews is small and can be managed by GS.

I'm sorry, I leave many questions.. Sotiale (talk) 12:13, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sotiale. Yeah, lots of questions, so you get lots of answers too. :)
  1. Yes, we can change wikisets, but before we are allowed to do so we indeed need consensus. So please organize a local vote or ask the opinion of the community of kowikinews on a different way. If you have this consensus, please mention it on Talk:Global sysops/wiki set and a steward will take care of it.
  2. I didn't know they were locked, but as you mentioned it now... I guess Shizhao has a good reason to lock them. I don't know.
  3. But you can start doing that. :) You would be perfect candidate as you speak Korean, a language not many SWMT volunteers speak.
  4. What do you mean? Every project can have admins; no matter if they're a GS wiki or not. In fact, almost all ko projects are a GS wiki.
Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 21:44, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
  1. Thanks! I notified community :)
  2. Then evil puppet (for example, blocked more 2 wikis and his puppet account) can be locked?
  3. On the one hand Korean-mother tongue users are few.. :P (Because Korean portal sites have good knowledge search system and service, perhaps many Korean are not interested in Wikimedia wikis and don't feel the necessity. irony!)
  4. Aha, I misunderstand something. Thanks! ;)
Sotiale (talk) 09:06, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
What do you mean with this: "Then evil puppet (for example, blocked more 2 wikis and his puppet account) can be locked?" If you want to know more about the locking criteria, you can go to the page Global locks. Usually we only lock vandalism-only accounts and long-term sockpuppeteers. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 13:51, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I mean that sockpuppeteer exist and He have attacked since 2010. He was blocked at more 2 wikis and has more 60+ puppet account. And I apologize for my boring questions and my awful English ability. Sotiale (talk) 14:21, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh? He has more sockpuppets? Who is he then? No problem though. We understand eachother. :) Trijnsteltalk 14:25, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
He just used puppet account for community dispute and his accomplishment of intention. But he is not multiple wiki sockpuppeteer, just attacked kowiki since 2010. kowiki community have suffered from his behavior and finally decided consensus. It is that anyone see his pattern, directly do block request. I couldn't report it until now because He is not multiple wiki sockpuppeteer. I want to fix number.. 60+ => 120+.. What can I do? He can be locked? Sotiale (talk) 14:39, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I think they can be locked, but please report them on Steward requests/Global and refer to the first three locks. Trijnsteltalk 14:54, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, I will report them. Thanks a lot! :) Sotiale (talk) 09:22, 19 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re: Wikinger

Hi Trijnstel. I guess that Wikinger will use whatever means are available to get on someone's nerves a little. Right now, about the only thing he can do is use open proxies, since one of the ISPs he is using is still globlly blocked, and the other one (unblocked) is keeping an eye on him.

I do not see a clear connection between a custom block message and blocking open proxies. There are wikis that block them as routine activity (see e.g. here) immediately after recognising these to be open proxies, regardless of possible vandal activity. One thing is that such vandals actually help us ( = admins, stewards, etc.) locate and seal these points of entry :) so, since blocking OPs is part of the routine activity, I do not see much grounds for custom treatment of such IPs. Wojciech Pędzich Talk 13:18, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wpedzich! Thanks for your comprehensive response; I was just wondering if you wanted to know this information and if you wished to do something with it. But for now I'll keep blocking the open proxies I'll see coming by and hopefully Wikinger will stop some day. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 13:27, 1 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

RE: CheckUser request page?

Hi Octahedron80. I was wondering, is there a special page to requests CUs at this wiki? I wanted to add yours to m:Steward requests/Checkuser/Introduction, but then noticed it didn't exist here. I added instead w:th:วิกิพีเดีย:การตรวจสอบผู้ใช้, but I don't think that's the right page and as I don't speak Thai it's hard for me to follow...

On Thai Wikipedia, we don't have specific page for CU appealing; we make use of administrators' noticeboard because our users are not eager to know who might be sockpuppets. Instead, we have more activities about reporting vandalism and checkusers automatically work at the point to co-operate with administrators. Moreover, we also have embassy page for non-Thai speakers. So you can link to either the noticeboard or the embassy page. (I recommended the latter choice.)
Thanks for the help! I added the embassy page to it, see here. Trijnsteltalk 21:02, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Berechtigungsfehler

-Barras talk 22:45, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Danke für die schnelle Auskunft. Heute klappt das Editieren wieder problemlos. Gruß --Kolja21 (talk) 09:01, 6 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Richero crosswiki/cluster spam

Originating from Italy, using 2.34.0.0÷2.38.0.0 Vodafone network, creates pages since 2006 see http://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Speciale:Registri&page=Marian_Richero

At the moment the pattern consists in registering a new sockpuppet with feminine name, then uploading some photos on commons.wiki and then trying to create any sort of variation with name and (radio) or (deejay) appended to the title, since many wikies have protected the page for multiple recreation of deleted material. Usually deletion tags are spotted and removed. See en.wiki, es.wiki, fr.wiki... etc.

On it.wiki a specific abuse filter (87) has repeatedly blocked the page re-creation. I strongly recommend other targeted wikies to setup similar heuristic filters to avoid further inconveniences. Also Vito has dealt with this spammer in the past.

Ciao, --M/ (talk) 18:09, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi M7. That's a real long-term vandal... Since you now mentioned the full name, I see he tried it on nl-wiki too: nl:Marian Richero. I'll add this title and "MARIAN RICHERO" to our cascade-protected page of forbidden page (names). Thanks for the other information too! If I notice new pages, I'll immediately inform you. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 18:51, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your interest on this subject. Do you know if there is something to avoid problem also on commons.wiki? (see nearly half of my deletion requests there) --M/ (talk) 21:12, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think the abuse filter of it-wiki could work. I copied it to commons, though without the block option (#99, it only logs). Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 21:50, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank for your import on commons.wiki. May I suggest you to edit the filter, since the it.wiki version is targeting the creation of a biography and it would not trigger if various conditions are unsatisfied, to better spot uploaded images, since they're only used for the described pattern and are usually copyright violations and/or published in blogs.
(action == 'upload') & (article_namespace == 6) & (lcase(new_wikitext) contains "marian richero")
Thanks a lot, --M/ (talk) 22:19, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I could do that, but it's not possible to check wiki-text while uploading, see bugzilla:19565. So it wouldn't make any difference. Trijnsteltalk 22:27, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, then... Just remove the second "& block", since external links and the like were never added to those image descriptions on commons and broaden the range to include 2.34.0.0/8 . To avoid false positives against all occurrences of "Marian", substitute the last group with a single test against name+surname. --M/ (talk) 22:35, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Done for the range, but I think the external links etc are still useful here. And I saw in your deleted contributions that almost all uploads had the name "Marian" in it, but "Richero" was never mentioned. Therefore I think it's good to just search on Marian. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 14:44, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Please note that if you do not remove the second "&" block condition, the filter will not be triggered if the edits are similar to those seen in the past. --M/ (talk) 17:47, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Permanent adminship

Hello and thanks for being on my pa.wiki talk page reminding me the expiration. As being the only active admin and much experienced one on the wiki, I need permanent adminship. The community is not so big to elect one. Should I request on meta for permanent adminship? Please prefer replying here. --tari buttar [talk] 01:29, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

As far as I know, permanent adminship isn't possible without local community consensus, although you can probably be given another (longer) temporary period.--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:32, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think there are two or more admins (totally inactive for years) with permanent adminship who were given the access permanently even when they're the only contributors. --tari buttar [talk] 10:15, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
A few years ago permanent adminship was given very easy. Now we prefer not to give that unless there is an active community, because there is no global inactivity policy yet. You can get longer admin access though (think of 6 months or 1 year), just like Jasper Deng said. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 10:26, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Guglani, can't you accept and say, "I'll learn"? Why remain sticking to "I've done everything perfectly which not need any improvement"? Be a good editor dear. I think, the details in which I helped/guided you is rare that you didn't appreciated making a single improvement. I don't wanna make the page large by repeating the same. You and some more (including me) were made admins just because the wiki didn't had one but it doesn't mean that we don't need to learn bcz we are admins. I always helped, and want, you to be a good editor which a user must be prior an admin. Sorry if I said something disappointing. --tari buttar [talk] 02:48, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
TariButtar, is this how you behave towards other colleague admins? I can ask you the same thing: "can't you accept and say, "I'll learn" [...] be a good editor dear." The page protection thing (pa:User talk:TariButtar#Page protection) is a good example. I see you stopped protecting pages, but you haven't removed the protection from the pages either (pa:Special:Log/protect). Besides, your comment that you're willing to unprotect *only* when Vituzzu will help fighting vandalism seems rather strange to me ("But if you wish, I can unprotect them but please you'll help us fighting vandalism."). Try to collaborate a bit... Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 12:09, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I accept that they both have faults but we are human too. Guglani's faults are much more in comparison to TariButtar's. Although I still need to learn alot, I would like to say Guglani also needs to learn, all his problems were clearly pointed out on his talk page by TariButtar and yet Guglani still refused to do anything about it, please keep watch on our community portal and see how Guglani is trying to censor all that oppose him. --Zarienah (talk) 13:54, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Block

Hi Trijnstel, I saw you do blocking, there is a user at pa.wp that is constantly warring and performed over 48 reverts at here. He has been given many warnings from various users (in talk page). The admin at pa.wiki is inactive and this unconstructive member is now pushing the limit on warring. User:Zarienah has admitted in the community portal that she understood why she would be blocked (see), therefore she is not liable to a block as she has agnowlaged she was wrong, when Babanwalia simply keeps moving the templates to his nonsense word despite the fact that only two people support it. It would be high time that a block is issued before further damage is to be caused. If you also see his talk page he had attitude and wanted me to call the steward. On another note I would like for an admin to be placed in pa.wp, I think it is also time for a proper admin to come into the wiki as I am seeing that the problems in the wiki are always being reported to the stewards while we need a worthwhile admin to help our Wikipedia. VibhasKS (talk) 07:02, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't think a block is needed, if Trijnstel (or any other steward authority) could just notify Babanwalia that what he is doing is wrong, he won't listen to me VibhasKS or anybody else except if they have authority, If Trijnstel could only warn him, he will stop only when a authority warns him so please don't block anyone, everyone there is extremely valuable and blocking the members is not needed. Also know that I warred equally as Babanwalia so I would deserve a block too. But it is simply not needed on that small orphan wiki. --Zarienah (talk) 08:59, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

What was a reason to remove me from admin group?

--Chorobek (talk) 15:11, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Chorobek. My sincere apologies. I removed the temporary rights because I saw that they expired and I must've missed your request and Shizhao apparantly thought that you had gotten permanent rights in May I guess. Anyway I now gave you admin rights for 1 year. Hopefully everything's okay now. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 15:27, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Everything is OK. Kind regards, Chorobek (talk) 01:51, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Open Proxy Block

Hi, Trijnstel! I need to use an open proxy in my country to get through some Fire Wall to access Wikipedia better. Would you please give me an IP block exemption? Thanks. And here's the details:

You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia.

Editing from your IP address (74.125.184.16) has been blocked (disabled) on all Wikimedia wikis until 18:46, 11 October 2013 by Trijnstel (meta.wikimedia.org) for the following reason:

Open proxy

This block began on 18:46, 11 October 2012

You can contact Trijnstel to discuss the block and you may make unblock requests or file appeals at meta:Steward requests/Global. Your current IP address is 74.125.184.16. Please include all above details in any queries you make. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Eareast (talk) 19:05, 21 November 2012‎

Oops, I totally forgot to reply on this one. Is a global-ipblock-exempt still needed or can you work without it? Trijnsteltalk 15:20, 7 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Help

Hello, please help me there. Sincerely. --H.b.sh (talk) 22:36, 22 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi H.b.sh. The Persian Wikipedia has its own oversighters (see Oversight policy#Persian Wikipedia). You should contact them via email. Trijnsteltalk 23:05, 22 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
sorry but see again my talk page. Sincerely. --H.b.sh (talk) 23:23, 22 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

IP block exempt request

Hello, I come from China and as you know, the Chinese government has blockes access to zh.wikisource, so I have to use an open proxy to visit that site. I would like to edit some pages there, but was told that the IP 173.254.221.125 was blocked on all wikis. So I would like to apply for an IP block exempt. Thank you. Hvn0413 (talk) 04:04, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Dear Hvn0413. According to SUL and Central Auth you don't have a SUL-account, so I can't give you a global-ipblock-exempt. I can -however- give you a local ipblock-exempt on the wikis where you need it. Can you confirm on zhwikisource that you want an ipblock-exempt? Then I'll give you one locally. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 19:53, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I confirm I need an IP block exempt on zh.wikisource. Thank you. Hvn0413 (talk) 05:43, 1 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please confirm it on on your user talk page on zh.wikisource and post the link to that edit here. Thanks. Trijnsteltalk 19:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Here it is. Kind regards, Hvn0413 (talk) 02:17, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re: Global unblock

Hi. Sorry for that, although I wonder how Wikinger got hold of an IP belonging to that range... I hope no permanent (or lasting) damage was done. Wojciech Pędzich Talk 21:31, 4 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wpedzich. According to our open proxy expert RonaldB the IP 84.25.68.107 is a webproxy and that falls within the range. There were at least two people who couldn't edit because of the block (ticket:2012120310012749 and a private email send to me). In any case the problem is solved now. Thanks for the reply! Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 21:57, 4 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

IPv6 range blocked

Hi, we are seeing our entire ISP's IPv6 space blocked: "Trijnstel blocked 2A02:AF8:0:0:0:0:0:0/32 from 16:39, 23 November 2012 to 16:39, 23 November 2013; the reason given was: Open proxy or zombie (more info)" - this is all IPv6 space allocated to AS29550. Could you provide more details about why the whole range has been listed? Thanks Cdp (talk) 10:32, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Because there were webproxies within that range. And do you have a global account? As Cdp is non-SUL... Regards, Trijnsteltalk 22:13, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi, thanks for the reply (sorry I dont have a global account at the moment (username taken elsewhere)). If we can find out what range the proxies are within, we can provide a more specific range to cover the proxies rather than blocking the entire ISP space just because of one or two proxies? Cdp (talk) 09:42, 6 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, yes, that's possible, but IPv6 webproxies are mostly highly dynamic and that's why we block complete ranges. But if you have a SUL account I can give you a global-ipblock-exempt so that you're still able to edit. It's better though to use the original IP instead of working via webproxies. Toolserver/watcher

Hi - if you have time could you look at my request here please - I see you've dealt with a number of these in the past. My request has been up a week, but seems to have been overlooked. Thanks.Optimist on the run (talk) 23:45, 11 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Done, see here. Apologies for the delay; most admins don't patrol this page sadly that's why I handle a lot of them. Trijnsteltalk 21:31, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Questions about Oversight

Hi! As a non-English Wikipedia steward, would you mind confirming a few things for me? I just want to make sure I'm saying the right things at w:en:Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Arbcom, confidentiality, and oversight/Straw poll.

  1. Are the the only two ways to get oversighters appointed a) through a community vote where there is no less than 70% support, or b) through ArbCom? Will the stewards appoint under any other circumstances?
  2. As I understand it, there are only a few circumstances in which oversight may be involuntarily removed: a) with ArbCom's say-so, b) inactivity, c) violation of the m:Privacy policy, d) the Board's say-so, e) a community vote, f) proven misuse of the Oversight extension, g) compromised account. Stewards cannot remove oversight for any violation of admin or English Wikipedia policies, or for any additional responsibilities that the English Wikipedia may have added to the Oversight role, like the above RFC proposes. Is this correct?

Thanks! --Rschen7754 13:33, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rschen7754. I had to look it up in the Oversight policy to ensure that I won't tell any lies to you. ;) Hope this helps:
  1. Yes. As you can see on Oversight policy#Access: a) arbcom or b) after a local request with 70/80% support and 25-30 support votes. We're very strict in granting access.
  2. Yes, but the rules are less clear here. Oversight policy#Removal of access: a) inactivity, b) abuse (which is quite broad), c) arbcom, d) local vote or e) WMF staff.
But note that we only remove it when it's clear that there is no trust anymore, thus only after a vote, arbcom decision or advice of the staff. Trijnsteltalk 21:49, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks! Just as a follow-up, in order for oversight to be emergency removed by a steward, there would need to be a violation of Meta's policies, not the English Wikipedia's - is that correct? --Rschen7754 21:57, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, yes, but the Oversight policy and the wmf:Privacy policy are both global policies, not meta ones. en:Wikipedia:Oversight is based on the global ones and maybe some local stuff are added to it, but in principle every oversighter should first act based on the rules mentioned on the global policies and second on the local policy. For example, en:Wikipedia:Oversight#Policy has a fifth valid reason to oversight stuff which the global one doesn't have. So both I'd say. Trijnsteltalk 22:09, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
But supposing that the English Wikipedia tacked on a responsibility completely unrelated to the oversight function to the oversighter position and then an oversighter broke one of the associated rules, the stewards would not remove the flags on an emergency basis, correct? --Rschen7754 22:13, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Correct, but when that would happen, they probably would lose admin rights based on an arbcom decision or local vote, but we won't decide ourselves, no. ;) And you should know that we *never* remove rights as an emergency action, *only* (and that happened just once or twice or so, for example on hiwiki this year when we removed all extra rights overthere) when there is something seriously wrong; though not on a large wiki as enwp as there is an active community. Trijnsteltalk 22:30, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, that answers my question. Thanks! --Rschen7754 22:34, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
