Over the last weeks and months, we – Cornelius Kibelka, Nicole Ebber, Vira Motorko (our Visiting Wikimedian from Wikimedia Ukraine), our Movement Strategy Track facilitators Bhavesh Patel and Luís Manuel Pinto, as well as WMDE’s Cooperation & Development experts Nikki Zeuner & Julia Kirchner – have developed three different tracks for the Wikimedia Conference.

Further details will be added. Everyone is welcome to provide feedback, ideas and input! This page was last updated on 9/05/2018.

Three programmatic tracks

edit

Movement Strategy

edit

Movement Strategy: In November 2017, phase 2 of the Wikimedia Movement Strategy Process will start. Its main goal will be to answer the question "How do we implement the strategic direction", which means identifying the roles and resources needed for execution, and the activities it involves. In order to ensure participation from the organized part of the movement in this next phase, we will again host a three-day track on movement strategy. This track will be designed together with the Wikimedia Foundation.

Movement Partnerships

edit

Wikimedia organizations and groups have a wide variety of experiences and knowledge in working with partners to achieve our mission. Based on the conversation at the last Wikimedia Conference, Wikimania, and regional Wikimedia conferences, we aim to continue to offer a space for conversations, experience sharing and learning around partnerships within and outside the Wikimedia movement. This track will be designed together with the Wikimedia Foundation’s Global Reach & Partnerships team, WMDE’s Partnerships & Development team and the volunteer “Partnerships group”.

Capacity Building & Learning

edit

The Wikimedia Conference is one of the main spaces for learning and sharing among Wikimedia affiliates. Again, we will host a track with sessions that are designed according to the participants’ needs, wishes and experiences. This track will be designed in close consultation with WMF’s Learning & Evaluation team, and will complement the pre-conference Learning Days.

Be prepared!

edit

As in the previous years, it will be again a quite interactive event and all participants are asked to prepare intensively for the announced topics and sessions. All entities and their representatives are requested to thoroughly discuss the conference topics and sessions internally before they start their journey to Berlin.

Reading the session outline is necessary for active participation. Of course, participation does not end after the conference: There will be documentation, reporting back to your home organisations, evaluation and follow-up tasks to be done. Furthermore, we will provide additional reading material in advance (and will notify you about this).

Track #1: Movement Strategy

CONTEXT

edit
  • The opening of the conference will be together with all WMCON participants and – after the official welcome notes and the logistics briefing – will explain the strategy development process and what we hope to achieve during the conference. Then people split up and go to the track that they are most interested in contributing to and learning from. At several points in the program, all participants will be coming back together for plenary sessions, inspiration and exchange.
  • Like last year, the movement strategy track will take a participatory approach. It will be a “journey” with each session building on the next session towards a conclusion.
  • The partnerships track and capacity building track offer a buffet approach, where you can pick and choose what you would like to try. The movement strategy track is more like a dining experience which you stay with from beginning to end.
  • Last year the track explored the strategic direction of the movement. End of 2017, the majority of movement organizations have endorsed the strategic direction to become the essential infrastructure in the ecosystem for free knowledge, with focus on the two concepts of knowledge as a service and knowledge equity.

CONTENT

edit

1 – The Big Picture.

  • Starting together with an overview of the whole conference and each track.
  • Status of the movement strategy process now and where it is going in the next two years;
  • Clarity about the aims and process of the movement strategy track, and what will happen with all the input/discussions generated during 3 days.

2 – The Possibilities.

  • How do we contextualize and apply the direction? How can we implement it in our own organizations, groups or communities, and align our strategies, goals and programs?
  • Imagine how the strategy could change your work in the next 3 years? What could you be doing more of, less of, new? What are the opportunities?

3 – The Challenges.

  • What are the concrete areas where change is needed? Discussing what blocks us from moving forward.
  • What are the challenges we need to resolve around roles, resources and responsibilities, in order to move forward? Discussing the challenges we need to address to be fit for purpose.

4 – The Way Forward.

  • How do we address these challenges and move towards our opportunities and the strategic direction? Suggesting practical actions to address our challenges and move towards our possibilities and the Strategic Direction.
  • What are the processes and decisions needed? Categorizing the actions into larger thematic areas.

5 – Preparing To Work.

  • Present the model for working groups (those groups will work on recommendations to tackle each of the identified themes and propose a process for their implementation) and form temporary working groups. Introducing the Working Group approach to the thematic areas.
  • Defining the aims and outputs of each Working Group.

6 – Thematic Inputs & Conversation.

  • Coming together to hear presentations on some of the work done already that we could build on in the Working Groups.
  • Discussing the presentations in parallel smaller groups.

7 – Getting To Work (7a + 7b)

  • Choosing a Working Group.
  • Developing a detailed proposal for each Working Group – who, what, how, when, etc.

8 – Wrapping Up.

  • Coming together to hear from all the tracks.
  • Closing together and…

We also hope that we will have fun, learn together, continue growing the community of relationships, and walk away feeling inspired to our commitment to collectively become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and to welcome anyone who shares our vision.
